reason: he displays almost all symptoms of BPD. first and most obviously, nagi is implied to be his FP, and he is shown splitting and displaying destructive behavior when he feels as if he's been abandoned. He considers nagi his "treasure" and obsesses over him to the point of ignoring anyone else. after he's abandoned by nagi in his eyes he suddenly switches to hating him, seeing him as horrible and having an incredibly black and white perspective. his relationship with nagi is also characterized by fear of abandonment, another symptom, as demonstrated in his reactions as well. later on, he also displays suicidal ideation, wanting to just die because he believes nagi has left him. although his behavior with nagi is a large part of his bpd-coding, that isn't all there is to it - even on his own, before meeting nagi, he lacks a consistent self image until he discovers football, which he tries to make his identity. this shows a lack of a sense of self on his part, as he instead bases it on things around him. he's also associated with chamelions, which can be seen as a nod to how people with bpd may sometimes try to replicate others' personalities to try to fill in for their own lack of understanding of themself.

I think the reason why the morals of the Knives Out duology hit so hard while being so subtle is because they’re so real and so well portrayed, but too often in the fandom I see them misrepresented.

In the first one, you have Marta Cabrera; and I’ve seen everyone boil down the moral of her story to just “kill ‘em with kindness”, but it’s so much more complex than that. It’s not just being kind, it’s aggressive kindness. It’s being kind when everyone else doesn’t want you too. It’s a vengeful kindness; “oh, you want me to be a douchebag and be mean and greedy just like you all would? Fuck you, I’m going to have a heart instead.” I mean, Blanc even outright says this when he confirms that one Hugh Ransom Drysdale was counting on Marta to let Fran die in order for her framing to work, but she doesn’t. She (in spirit) laughs in his face as she attempts to save her life anyway. That’s what Marta’s story is all about; being kind even when the world doesn’t want you to.

And Helen Brand, a lot of people also just simmer her story down to “fuck Elon Musk, go break shit” but again, it’s so much more complicated than that. The real moral of Helen’s story is the contrast of Revenge and Justice. The goody-two-shoes folk of the world would say that Justice for your crimes is better than senseless revenge, and coming from a hyper-religious home I’ve been hit over the head since childhood that vengeance is not the answer. But that’s not true. Calculated vengeance against a “shitheaded” target is justified, and in some cases, commendable. That’s what Helen’s story is about; having the courage to take revenge in a perfectly executed manner, whether she premeditated it or not, and end the injustices against her not by seeking justice, but by seeking perfect revenge. It’s Disruption™️ as dictated by Miles Bron.

The morals mean a lot to me personally because I’ve found both to be true in my life, and they’ve helped me out in some bad situations as well. To see the stories of these incredible women boiled down too simply has frustrated me on occasion. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong. But that’s what I’ve observed to be true in the series. I can’t wait for what the third one has to teach us.
