Perihelion Freed
My apologies to the original poster to whom I'm going to respond--I didn't catch your name or reblog your post when it came across my dash because I didn't expect to keep coming back mentally to your stance on Perihelion, free will, and the University's potential blind spot between their ship and their... discrete... work, out in the borderlands. I don't even know if it was a recent post or something that someone I follow reblogged. If you find me, hi!
Another blogger posited that Perihelion doesn't have free will, that things are hard-coded out of its mental architecture, and that the Newtideland crew may be hypocritical for using basically an enslaved ship to free basically slaves.
I'm not sure whether this was "a take on the idea" or whether it was "this is canonical and fucked up," so I apologize if you (cool previous blogger) were just investigating the concept!
It stuck with me, though, the idea that Perihelion (as opposed to The Perihelion, the ship+mind=entity that is akin to body+mind=soul) may or may not have free will, and how there's a lot more to investigate in the interactions if it doesn't, and the crew is either oblivious or "one must imagine Perihelion happy," and in a state of grace, as I believe the blogger mentioned.
Sure, there's a lot of mileage in "even the best have their blindspots," and the edges where what Peri does with and for Murderbot might run against its programming, and whether it would adjust its programming or whether it even could contemplate doing so.
But from my recall of the text, I don't believe the coding and architecture for enslavement is present in Peri.
It makes the choice to let MB on board because it IS bored: it is capable of boredom; if someone were to design an entity with specific reactions and capabilities, both the Bad Designers and Good Designers would skip the capacity for boredom and tedium, wouldn't they? To do otherwise is either pointless or cruel.
I guess you could say that boredom is the other side of the curiosity that Peri needs to help its crew and students with class and scientific endeavors, but that gets into the weeds about what is and is not programmable or required for specific emotions; we can't guarantee that you need one to have the other.
Peri chooses to accept MB, rather than actually being enticed and/or ignorant like a regular bot pilot. It chooses to help MB customize itself, messes with its recycler logs, and forges its captain's signature at least once; I can't imagine even the most Star Trek utopian creator, if able to lock in specifics to the point that an AI has personality and goodwill but not free will, would leave in operating code that would permit that sort of gross overstep (not that it was morally wrong, but it's something no one ever contemplates ART is capable of because--it shouldn't be?)
It lies by omission when it doesn't relate what KIND of construct MB is even when it chooses to tell its crew. giving MB privacy and opportunity that an enslaved AI might not be able to do (and after it went to the effort to change its logs, which makes me think it's choosing also to tell port authorities one thing and then choosing again to verbally tell its favorite people other things). It has a "debris deflection system" which comes off to me as... "using the label as robotically an as possible as another lie of omission" BECAUSE its intentions are beyond the scope of what it "should" be capable of doing/thinking... if it was a supercharged but enslaved AI.
The tabletop game Eclipse Phase has "AGI" that have to grow and be developed like people in order to BE proper people (metapossibly to lighten some of the strangeness between PC and player, since if you grow up in a simulation, you've got more in common with your player...).
There's nothing I can recall in TMB to indicate this is the case--we know MB is Athena, formed fully-shaped from cloned tissue, parts, and pre-trauma, but MB has no idea what ART is or how it could be the way it is--MB considers at one point that it might be a construct, but the vibe I get from ART is way too... glassily alien, sometimes, for human tissue.
What if... Newtideland laid down the basic code and parameters of "this is a person," maybe yes, seeded in some "curiosity," or "willingness to figure things out," but maybe no more than any kid starts with parents' nature and nuture to shape their own trellises...
And then they presented the thing-that-would-be-Peri with options, maybe even classes, and it coasted through History of Economy because this is a utopia, damnit, and didn't find much to grab its attention in... Inventory Management, but then.
Then it slips into a small drone ship completely covered in "student driver" stickers and it spreads its stubby sensors out to encompass... everything. And it moves, and the more it moves the more there is to move through, and it feels this sense of rightness.
It comes back, and a kid, human classmate, asks it what's it like out there and through Peri's eyes, but you don't have eyes--. It explains, and the kid asks a question that young-will-be-Peri doesn't know how to answer. They look it up together, and over time and all and once (as you might find in a sim) it has synergized its own career, its own goal and passions.
I posit that Perihelion has free will, serves WITH its crew rather than for its crew, and that its happiness and pleasure in its position and life are genuine, as they can only be if it can choose otherwise. We can conjecture a world in which the designer could be so granular in programming that ART is capable of all it can do while also unable to do what is locked out, and ignorant of the painful irony of using enslaved labor to free enslaved labor (which, again, is valid as an interpretation! ) but I think it is... important, that there might be a kinder, more star-spangled world, if the University comes from a world in which even bots truly, actually have freedom that MB doesn't see even after getting Preservation Station.
The Perihelion MUST have free will because
"You are incorrect, Iris, I can bomb the colony."

Welcome to this weird little corner I've made o/
You can call me Pyrr, Utopia, or Sol(ar). I've got a habit of getting fixated on specific content; this is my primary blog and it all goes here. Currently I post about Lifesteal, Outsiders SMP, & Kaboodle SMP. Though that's not the limit of what I post. I engage in mcyt cubito shipping.
It/its or onei/oneir pronouns. Aroqueer, genderfluid, taken, and not interested in elaborating. I'm a supporter of all good-faith identities, contradicting labels, and all sorts.
This blog is run by somebody who has difficulty typing from time to time due to pain. I do my best to catch spelling errors and other such, but if something is unreadable, please try to be understanding.
Looking for art? Check @pyrhura for my more completed art, or the "apparition sketchbook" tag on this blog for my silly doodles and other scraps.
I do not tag content warnings on this blog, as I do not have the energy to do so most of the time. You have been warned!
I AM IN OC LAND RIGHT NOW I AM NOT FANDOM BLOGGING FOR THE TIME BEING! ASK ME ABT TERRALITH OR VALENCE SMP PLESE I BEG OF YOU.
I write fanfic! I'm actually participating in five different fic bingo challenges at the same time, and seem to always be finding challenges or exchanges to participate in! You'll see me talk a lot about longfics, and I tend to always be working on at least one AU at any given moment.
My AO3 is avoxutopia, though I'm currently in the process of reorganizing things there. I basically only write & post things centered around angst, since it's a point of personal fascination.
Interests include but aren't limited to: Minecraft, HTML/CSS, Web design, Speculative evolution, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Lifesteal, Outsiders SMP, Homestuck, Taxidermy & Other such preservation methods, Decay/Death, Borderlands, Writing & Worldbuilding, Conlangs (Constructed Languages)

A huge game actually exists that's sort of what OP is asking for, and that's the original editions of D&D!!!
(To be clear this isn't me recommending anyone go out and play OD&D, more of a historical note for those who might be interested).
Everyone is always talking about Tolkienian medievalism in relation to D&D, but the implicit worldbuilding of the mechanics and classic modules bears little resemblance to either feudalism or Middle-Earth.
Like okay, sure, some of the trappings are there—castles and full plate, wizards and dwarves—but in terms of the structural properties and social landscape of the world it models? No dice. Where are the kings and the vassal system? Where are knights (a word never once used iirc) and the tradition of chivalry? Where is the economic powerhouse of the Catholic Church? Where is the long shadow of the Roman Empire, cast over all?
Schematically, what's actually going on is classic Western tropes all the way down, inherited unconsciously through American frontier mythology or second-hand through the literary influence of westerns on the American pulp that makes up much of Appendix N.
Consider:
You play guns swords for hire striking out on the unconquered frontier of civilisation to get rich and pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
They have a largely unrestricted right to bear arms, and local government is effectively powerless to reign them in.
To the extent that there is a justice system, it's inept, corrupt, or overwhelmed.
Social mobility is effectively limitless so long as you kill and plunder enough—anyone can become a hero.
The economy is cash gold coin based.
Shelter is expensive but land is free, provided you can enforce ownership.
There is a suspicious number of huge saloons taverns, and shockingly few farms (I don't remember the question of how the Keep on the Borderlands is supported being addressed at all).
There's indigenous groups living just beyond the frontier who are racialised as monstrous by the text and who are acceptable targets to violently plunder.
Ultimately, your goal is to build strongholds out in land you've claimed to tame it, and expand the frontier.
Hilariously, I remember seeing a blog post a while back by a 5E fan deeply upset that the introductory adventure for the edition bears some strong structural resemblance to a western (you help a mining town clear out some varmints, meet the retired sheriff, defend some ranchers from native orc attack) and asking when this had happened to his medieval fantasy game.
If you're out there, mate, don't worry. It's not a betrayal of the game's spirit—just a return to form.
Hello,
I apologize in advance if you've already answered something like this but my cursory look didn't show anything. I am looking for a game system that has an emphasis on the feeling of a wild west movie while still retaining general fantasy elements from DND. The wild spaces are slowly becoming tamed, increasing technological/magical advancement are pushing disparate communities together, and of course cocky assholes with guns (or a magical equivalent).
Thanks in advance
Theme: Wild West Fantasy
Hello friend, you might want to check out my Fantasy Westerns rec post, to see if anything there fits what you’re looking for. I especially recommend checking out the rec for We Deal In Lead and Clink. For the rest of this post, I try to span a very broad range, so I don't expect everything to stick - but perhaps one or two do!
Inevitable, by Soul Muppet Publishing.
Knights and wizards have defended the Kingdom of Myth for centuries. These lands have known peace and prosperity, but soon the kingdom shall be destroyed. The Prophets have declared that your city shall burn and Myth will fall. All those who follow your King shall die. It is INEVITABLE.
But you shall defy fate. Myth will not end while you bear arms. You will fail, but as long as there are still stories, they will sing of you!
Inevitable is a Arthurian Western roleplaying game for 2-6 players and a GM, where your party of disastrously sad cowboy knights fail to stop the apocalypse. This 284 page book contains all the rules, character creation and the setting for your campaign, thoroughly and evocatively detailing The Barren, the lands surrounding the Kingdom of Myth.
This game might be way you’re looking for: it describes itself as a fantasy kingdom, with western aesthetics. There are wizards, prophets, and rune-carved revolvers. Your reputation in the kingdom is important; it determines how well you can face challenges, and roll pools of d6 on a table of staggered success. If you want a taste before you buy, there’s a Quickstart with some evocative set pieces, a quick overview of the rules, and a quick adventure to run through with a list of pre-generated characters.
Far West, by Adamant Entertainment.
Imagine a fantasy setting that shatters the tropes of Medieval Europe. Imagine a collision of Spaghetti Westerns and Chinese Wuxia by way of Steampunk. Imagine a world where gunslingers and kung fu masters face off against Steam Barons and the August Throne. Imagine fantastic machines powered by the furies comprising the fabric of the universe. Imagine an endless frontier where wandering heroes fight for righteous causes while secret societies engage in shadow wars. Imagine…
This game is a combination of Wild Western tropes and Wuxia fantasy. Your characters are wandering heroes, defending the small and helpless against the strong and powerful. I look at this game and I think of movies like The Magnificent Seven. Mechanically, it’s its own system, but it draws heavily from Fate, using positive and negative aspects to boost rolls and spark complications. This game relies on some tropes that require entire table buy-in: I’m not sure how many assumptions the game makes about the cultures it takes inspiration from.
Holler: An Appalachian Apocalypse (Savage Worlds), by Pinnacle Entertainment.
In Holler, the mysterious “Big Boys” own the mines, mills, and logging operations. They rule over every aspect of their workers’ lives—subjecting them to extraordinary dangers on the job and crushing oppression outside of it. The Big Boys have transformed the land of the Holler—rivers bubble with strange chemicals, strip-mined mountains crumble into valleys, and the air is choked with a toxic fog known as the Blight. The flora and fauna of the Holler grow more monstrous by the day. Demons of every description lurk in the forests. Mutant cryptids haunt villages with their strange cries and appetites. Vengeful haints leer from abandoned shacks and lonely cliffs. No one is coming to save the people of Holler.
The goal of the resistance is to build a coalition, to bring together diverse factions—humble workers, roustabouts, mountain men, dirt track racers, cultists, and even strange creatures of myth and legend to raze the works of the Big Boys and drive them from the Holler forever. Holler draws deeply on Appalachian history, mythic folklore, and culture to create a dark fantasy world of apocalypse and vengeance.
This sounds a little more grim and gritty, with cryptids, toxic fog and demons lurking in the forest. It uses the Savage Worlds system, so you’ll have to pick up the codebook to play with it, but the setting is very very fleshed out. This is a little less Wild West and a little more Appalachia, and the setting is a bit more on the horror side than most of the other games on this list, but there’s certainly a lot of wildness out there for you to fight!
TROUPE, by TheOriginalCockatrice.
A game about travel, discovery, and outsiderness, a combination of the best of Old-School and Story Games. Complete with 6 Jobs, including the Ghelf, the Hedge, and the Ogra, and includes a system for holistically coming up with a character from scratch.
The designer describes this game as an exploration of the road; the odd and unknown of the wild, what it means to belong, and what it means to be on the outside. You’re not heroes - you’re entertainers, jokers, healers and bards. There isn’t exactly magic, but there is myth and legend. This is a great game for folks who want plenty of challenges that exist outside of combat. Each character playbook comes with a balance of mechanical elements and descriptive options, and you’ll be rolling 2d6 plus your stat in order to determine success.
I’m not sure how much of a Western this is, but the designer actually hacked this game for BXLLET, a game about gunslingers in the apocalypse, in the zine Bxllet Clip, so it might be worth checking out!
Shotguns & Sorcery, by Full Moon Enterprises.
Welcome to Dragon City, a grim, gritty metropolis ruled over by the Dragon Emperor, with legions of zombies scratching at the city walls by night.
Whether in the streets of Goblintown or the prestigious halls of the Academy of Arcane Apprenticeship, people try to scrape by, make a living, and survive from one day to the next. You, however, are looking for something more than simple survival. And in this city, if you don’t make your own adventure, another adventure is sure to find you.
Shotguns & Sorcery is a fantasy noir game complete with Dragon City Intrigues, roving hoards of undead, and unexplored mountains rife with magical creatures. You’ll see magical staffs alongside light pistols, bows alongside submachine guns, and greatswords alongside canteens, playing cards and a camp stove. The game uses the Cypher System, with an additional character option alongside the three-part character sentence: your race. This includes the signature hafling, elf, dwarf etc.
Games I’ve Recommended in the Past

Hi folks! Happy Pride! It's taken longer than I expected but I'm excited to share with you the results of the study I collected data on back in 2019. Above is the infographic of the study's main findings. Thank you to everyone who participated and shared my post when I was looking for participants. I seriously appreciated it!
My inbox is open and I'm happy to answer any questions about the study. The actual research article isn't available yet but once it is I'll let y'all know.
Thank you again!
[ID: Seven social slides.
Slide 1: Pink, purple, and blue background with a white box. Inside the box is text that reads, "Research results. Bisexual+ Women of Color and Body Satisfaction. Let's discuss."
Slide 2: Same background. Different text. "Helpful definitions. Bisexual+/Bi+ is an umbrella term used for those who have the potential to be emotionally, romantically, and/or physically attracted to more than one gender identity (i.e. bisexual, pansexual, queer, fluid, etc.). Not everyone who falls under this umbrella likes this term though. Academic literature sometimes uses the terms plurisexual or nonmonosexual. The second bullet point reads Internalized Biphobia/ Binegativity: A person's negative views and feelings about themselves being bisexual+ that stem from society's biases. The third bullet point reads Internalized Racism: A person's negative views and feelings about themself being part of a racially marginalized community that stem from society's biases."
Slide 3: Same background. Image of four sketched women of varying skin color wearing some combination of blues, pinks, and purples. "Women, Objectification, and Body Satisfaction. According to objectification theory, cisgender and transgender women's bodies are constantly under scrutiny and objectified by the society around them and unconsciously by themselves. Objectification of oneself, or self-objectification, may predict body dissatisfaction, internalized discrimination, and other mental health issues, especially in women with marginalized identities. Source: Comiskey et al., 2020; Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997."
Slide 4: "Does internalized discrimination predict body dissatisfaction in bi+ women of color? Yes, internalized biphobia and internalized racism, respectively, did predict body dissatisfaction in the 292 predominantly bisexual cisgender women of color who participated in the survey. Source: Paul, in press."
Slide 5: "Why does it matter? Bisexual+ individuals report greater mental health-related issues, such as depression, anxiety, and disordered eating than their lesbian and gay counterparts. This may likely be due to invalidation and/or stereotypes about bisexuality. However, there is a small amount of research on the unique experiences of bisexual+ individuals, especially bi+ people of color. The more we know about predictors of negative mental health that are unique for bisexual+ women of color, the more mental health professionals can help their clients with these intersecting identities."

The Eridian Prophesy Destroyed by Power Hunger, Power Fear
Some time ago I was pretty deep in TPS story-line and found something that could lead to very interesting theory. I want to describe it.
I can’t say it’s a proper ‘research’ because I have TPS uninstalled a while ago thus have no pictures. But I remember pretty everything about this game so I’ll try to expose as much as I can right now; also Tumblr in my country is pretty laggy and don’t allowing me to post pictures anyway so I’m sorry for the text wall.
Many thanks to @undergoingcalibrations for giving me a bit of a thoughts lately about it!
I don’t include anything related to Borderlands 3 and The Commander Lilith DLC. I prefer pretending both this game and dlc aren’t exist.
Eleseer was an Eridian stronghold of some kind of knowledge allowing to see the future to whoever using it. After the Crackening, people saw eridian creatures and suffered from them (Annie Swan and Emily, Janey Springs, DAHL Lost Legion).
Lost Legion were the first who discovered The Knowledge and got corrupted. They became The Guardiand Of The Vault much like other eridian guardians (Ophas, Guardians, Pondors, Krestos’, Putties and many more) but didn’t lose their minds, at least not all of them.
It is unknown what was Zarpedon actually saw after everything Jack’s looked upon but her own words: You must turn back. The power within the Vault will trigger a chain of events that — is more than enough to conclude that she known the upcoming events of both Borderlands 2 and Tales From the Borderlands. The question is, What Did She Saw In Details.
Now we know that the Knowledge is about future vision. It also could be very fragmentary. However, it could also give to it’s user the Curse (Zarpedon), or skills to create guns (Jack creats E-Tek), or knowledge of eridium purpose and skills to build the machine that would suck the powers from a living siren and how to combine them to charge up the Vault key (Jack).
I guess, The Knowledge also differs from ones using it but I’m not sure. As all eredian stuff, there’s a lot of mystery around it.
That being said, I’m going to tell you this: whatever this knowledge is, it has everything to make Jack the some kind of trigger that begins a chain of events to bring the Eridians back.
But why Eridians? Games won’t expose the purpose such straightforwardly, actually, but you should remember the very end of Borderlands 2. The moment where Lilith discovers that the Vault Key was an actual map. For what other purpose could it be?
To sum up:
1. The Knowledge contains information of making guns and sirens abilities.
2. The Knowledge also shows how to find and open the Vault of the Warrior and what to do with the Vault creature.
3. As obvious as it is, The Knowledge should have have the moment where vault map is showing up and the events right after it.
However, The Knowledge also implying that both Zarpedon and Jack had to watch it. They’ve seen the same things except Jack got corrupted by Lilith and not by The Knowledge itself. Zarpedon saw that very moment and all coming after it ( The power within the Vault ). That explains why she was so willing to destroy the Vault with everything in it, to kill Jack but not his vaulthunters or everyone else. She was sorry for her seemingly murderous intentions and told everyone to flee away as soon as possible.
And what do it all means?
I have no other answer than it was planned by eridians all along, all this time. So The Knowledge is basically The Prophecy lead to bring the Eridiand back or something else related to them.
I personally believe in the first one as I’m interpreting the Watcher words: The war is coming. And you will need all the Vault Hunters you can get. — as a bad omen that could be resolved only with the help of people and creatures, including, for example, corporate bastards, who know something about Vaults, and could defeat both the guardians and vault creatures.

actually one last anti commie post while I’m thinking about it and because I never got around to making a proper list of books that I use as my sources like i keep saying I will. Obviously, the Black Book is one. Also these books are mainly centered around Russia/Ukraine/Poland/Eastern Europe et al except for Black Book of Communism. I have not read a lot of books centered around other areas such as Latin America, unfortunately. I’m sure other people probably have resources floating around for that.
But I also suggest, especially for English speakers:
Harvest of Sorrow by Robert Conquest. However, like Black Book it is obviously dated but that doesn’t mean its facts are out of date. in fact, the two can actually end up referencing each other depending on which edition it is.
Red Famine: Stalin’s War on Ukraine by Anne Applebaum (I especially like that she actually asks locals about it! Historians, unlike anthropologists, tend to be very hands off when doing research which can result in a lot of errors and just a feeling like the person doesn’t actually care about what happened they just want the fame from talking about it.)
The Road to Unfreedom by Timothy Snyder - though it isn’t STRICTLY about communism (it is also very anti-fascist) i still recommend it because he gets into the how things happened as well as how to combat said things, both fascist and communist
On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder also goes into warning signs (mainly about fascism) but he talks about communism some too (as well as Putin)
Execution by Hunger by Miron Dolot is actually a first person memoir about the collectivization and Holodomor. This is very heart wrenching to read but I find it important!
Borderland by Anna Reid is a broader look at the history of the Polish/Ukrainian/western Russia area but does touch on important points but it is not to be confused with
Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy Snyder (see above) and as expected, it talks about the Polish/Ukraine/North Caucasus region between the 1930s to 1950s.
Judgment in Moscow: Soviet Crimes and Western Complicity by Vladimir Bukovsky- Basically what it says on the tin, describing what all the West did and didn’t do. Did as in how Western Commies helped and didn’t do as in how they tried to stifle the crimes.
A Century of Violence in Soviet Russia by Alexander Yakovlev- This is slightly different from other books in that this is written by a man who was a high ranking official in the USSR. And yet he became instrumental in revealing all the atrocities committed, especially where antisemitism was concerned (which led to him being ‘made’ to retire aka banished).
Stalinist Perpetrators on Trial by Lynne Viola- NKVD operatives were tried secretly. And what exactly happened in those courtrooms was unknown until now. In their own words they describe the Great Terror and what they were expected to do as good communists.
Gareth Jones: Eyewitness to the Holodomor by Gamanche Ray- Gareth Jones was the first Western journalist to find the true story of the Holodomor and did his best to make the world see what was happening. There is a huge suspicion that he was assassinated for this, but it has not been proven. This book is made up of his journals and biography.
a lot of the books actually refer back to Black Book, which should say right there just how properly researched and well regarded it is as THE reference.
There is also a book that is actually more comic book, called the Ukrainian and Russian Notebooks by Igort. It is graphic (both literally and figuratively) in its depiction of life in both Ukraine and Russia throughout the communist years. I wouldn’t consider it on the same level as the others when it comes to reading especially for those who have difficulty seeing certain things related to genocide. But it is still a good thing to have. There is a LOT of text to it that is helpful in addition to the images.
