seems to be an influx of "feminist" men getting outed for sexual assault lately and a part of me really wants to analyze how supposedly progressive intellectuals are Extremely quick to judge people who "pick sides". the other part of me thinks they should kill themselves 👍

I've hit a bit of a reading slump, on top of receiving my delayed-for-two-months salary, so I'm about to go book shopping in a few days.
Has anyone got any book recs for me? :D

The Inferno: A Story of Terror and Survival in Chile
For those interested in the topic of my blog, this is one of the most powerful primary source memoirs on the experience of leftist women political prisoners under Pinochet's Junta.
Another book which might be easier to find online is Luz Arce and Pinochet's Chile: Testimony in the Aftermath of State Violence
Tumblr media
As a member of Salvador Allende’s Personal Guards (GAP), Luz Arce worked with leaders of the Socialist Party during the Popular Unity Government from 1971 to 1973. In the months following the coup, Arce served as a militant with others from the Left who opposed the military junta led by Augusto Pinochet, which controlled the country from 1973 to 1990. Along with thousands of others in Chile, Arce was detained and tortured by Chile’s military intelligence service, the DINA, in their attempt to eliminate alternative voices and ideologies in the country. Arce’s testimonial offers the harrowing story of the abuse she suffered and witnessed as a survivor of detention camps, such as the infamous Villa Grimaldi.
Despite the torments she endured and moral compromises she made, she concludes her memoirs on an optimistic note on the possibility of love-
Tumblr media
While some judge Luz Arce harshly for her surrenders, her political exiling has allowed her to speak with total frankness about the tactics of the Junta regime. And the ways its methods of psychological torture specifically targeted the revolutionary women who threatened it. Capitalist patriarchy needed to bring the militant women who threatened it down to a state of complete helplessness in order to preserve its hegemony. In the latin machismo ideology, women's sexuality seen as inherently yielding and submissive was exploited as the weak link in the fierce defiance of Marxist women. Women like Luz Arce who served both in Allende's Socialist Presidential Guard, and the MIR underground after the coup. In the political prison the class and gender conflict between misogynist patriarchy and Marxist-Feminist revolution reached its sharpest heights. This is the gendered violence that all capitalist patriarchy is built on in its rawest most brutal form. Directly concentrated on the women who threatened to overthrow it.
Tumblr media
But at times Luz was able to exploit the dialectical tension between being a helpless object of the male gaze, and a dangerous Marxist militant to secure a respite. Taking advantage of guards' rumors that she had special martial arts training in Cuba, she was able to defend herself even in the showers.

Book tumblr?
Is there such thing as book tumblr? Like ik booktok, booktube, bookstagram, etc, but is there a tumblr version? Bc my tumblr is mainly fandom stuff(toh, pjo, etc), and a bunch of chaos, but I need book recs, places to totally not find free ebooks, places to rant about good books, etc, so does anyone know how to find that side of tumblr?

If you’re a a film/book/art reviewer and all of your reviews are negative I don’t respect your opinion. Right off the bat you either don’t love the medium or you’re not making it clear what you actually like, so why would I trust your opinion about what not to enjoy?

Poemathon - Challenge to Read Poetry 📚
This year, I launched my Read More Books by Reading Short books challenge to help me and others go through their TBRs and fulfill their dream of reading 50 - 100 books in one year. I held a March Tic Tac Toe Readathon partly to work towards that goal. I'm happy to announce that for April, I will host Poemathon, a readathon to encourage reading books in verse form. April is National Poetry Month, crrated by the Academy of American Poets. You can join this challenge on Storygraph. The objective is to read at least five books in verse form, such as anthologies of poetry and novels in verse form. The Storygraph page lists books to choose and allows you to add books if you join. Learn more about my TBR and book recs by watching the announcement video.

“You must understand that all of us are in the same boat which, at times, can find itself in calm seas and at others in rough ones. Maybe you'll tell me that yours has only seen rough seas. But know this... that a boat inured in rough seas comes out stronger than one anchored in port. The latter, in the heaven it enjoys, becomes more susceptible to rot...” ― Anton Sammut, Memories of Recurrent Echoes
