I'm Doing A PhD About Bookstagram, BookTok and BookTube
It is a strange combination. On the one hand, there are the intensive research requirements of tertiary education and academics, the long hours bent over a notebook, a cup of coffee steaming as the clock strikes midnight, and a near feverish drive to learn more, study more, understand more. On the other hand, we have bookish social media, where the environment is a mixture of casual commentary…

Bookish Social Media is a crazy place sometimes, but it’s also amazing and supportive and educational when you find the right people. Click here for more. [context: for my 2nd semester at uni we have to post some of our writing online and we have to pick social media sites to advertise said writing on]
I said I was going to make tumblr posts about my writing and my lecturer's reaction to that was "are you sure your audience is on tumblr?" "who even uses tumblr?"
is my audience on tumblr? where else do people actually read long form content anymore, other than tumblr? what better place is there to pretentiously ramble about my love of media than the hellsite that started it all? is my audience on tumblr?? the day I opened tumblr, it felt like I had found my people. ma'am, respectfully, i know where the mentally ill people are and they're all on tumblr with me. I do not appreciate her hoity toity superiority.

Being a person who uses a lot of social media platforms, I've come to the conclusion that social media is infact ruining our mental healths and is the most toxic place EVER.

Alright, I’m gonna need some books with actual villain love interests. Not the powerful guy who’s on the opposite side of war or an opposing kingdom, or a guy who has a villainous persona to keep the people he loves safe, OR he’s allied/works with the antagonists but he doesn’t believe in the cause and is a good person deep down.
No.
I want a full fledged unhinged villain who loves the protagonist without restraint and won’t change for the sake of love while also having emotional depth.
Kathryn Ann Kingsley does this stupendously.
Her villains are essentially unrelenting forces of nature and are unapologetically malicious. All of them are terrible but have their own scars and love their protagonists with all their shriveled rotted hearts. Kingsley just has a way to make these villains deplorable and likable to the reader imo
Some of them aren’t all bad and have people who rely on them, but they DO NOT CHANGE THEMSELVES in the name of love.
Like I love characters like Rhysand and Warner but I want some villains that are actually villainous

Despite what you see online there are readers who
Can’t afford to buy books
Can’t afford to buy as many books as they want
Have a job (or jobs)
Go to school
Juggle both school and work
Keep that in mind before assuming we’re all rich or wealthy, read all day, are on social media 24/7, and hoard books from impulsive buying

What I've Learnt in My Year of Book Blogging
I’ve been writing bookish things on this blog for over a year now. Honestly, times flies and it feels like it was only last week that I was posting everyday of October (something I will talk about later because wow that wasn’t such a good idea). With a year’s knowledge comes a year’s load of lessons leant so I want to go over a few things with you all. This might be helpful if you’re looking to…

Doppelgänger: A Trip Into the Mirror World by Naomi Klein is an interesting read.
I've never really read political books before (it took me a long time to learn how to manage my anxiety well enough to not break down whenever anything happened in the political news cycle), and I'll be the first to admit that it feels like a glaring fault on my part. I should be more well-informed beyond just what I see on social media.
I ended up picking this book because a podcast I listen to, If Books Could Kill, recommended it. Kinda. Their episode on it is only on their patreon, and I only listened to the teaser they have on Spotify. Or, uh, just the first five minutes of the teaser-- long enough to hear that they mostly recommended it. I turned it off and put the book on hold at the library as soon as I could.
Overall, I really like this book. Klein is a great writer, and she has a way of writing about big ideas that make them not only easy to understand but also compelling. I had no trouble reading this book throughout all of the airport time I had last week while on a trip.
The first half of the book is dedicated to sorting through what the fuck happened during COVID. The way she applies concepts like diagonalism and pipikism really helps to add clarity to what happened then, and how the political shifts still bleed into now. My favorite chapter was one on the ways wellness culture intertwines with the far right. (I have a sibling who works as an RD, and I have already told her that she just needs to read that one chapter.)
However, I think her framing device about doppelgangers and Naomi Wolf doesn't quite work. By the last third of the book, Wolf is all but forgotten, and you can feel Klein struggle to fit the full array of Leftist ideology into the frame world of doubles and doppelgangers. There was a point of time where Klein was framing Israel's oppression of Palestinians as a form of "doubles," and it's just... you can just tell that Klein wanted to talk about this but couldn't really fit this into the doppelganger and Mirror World framework. Maybe this chapter will get revised in later editions, especially since this book came out before the attacks and genocide on Gaza. Right now, it's just a clunky way of looking at colonization, especially with what is happening right now.
Speaking of which, some of the terms she came up with were outright silly. I can withstand the Mirror World stuff, but I draw a line at the Shadow Lands. Like, come on Klein. Don't you hear how silly that is?
Overall, Doppelganger works best as a primer for Leftist politics. If you are uninformed, this is a good place to get caught up in the past 5 years of thought. But Klein's framework doesn't always work, and her various chapters don't quite meld with each other. If you are already the most well-informed person on the planet, then you might be bored by this.
But if you just want a starting point, this book is a great introduction.

ah okay i finally made a substack — link
i've been debating making one for a while. i wasn't going to because i use this tumblr blog to post all of my bookish and academic rambles. however, i feel like it would be a nice space for more long form content — essays, critiques, nerd sci-fi & fantasy deep dives, book recommendations / reviews / in-depth wrap ups, etc.
i might even share some of my favourite academic essays on there (including my dissertation), we'll see!!
i know it's not a platform that many people use, but if you do, i'd love to see you over there (lol) <3

Book Marketers
Tips on how to approach an author:
Know their material! DO NOT approach an author unless you've read at least one piece.
Know the Genre of their work! Figure out how you would best place their work before you message them.
Do not approach an author whose work you don't like or don't respect. You're putting bad fiction on the market and putting yourself out of work! How? Because you need a portfolio to show your potential clients, and if your promoting work that sucks nobody will want your services!
When you're ready to approach an author, give them respect! Have your credentials ready! What are credentials? A website with YOUR fuckin' picture on it. Oh no! I'm not an attractive person! Yeah, you're a book marketer not a model. No one cares what you look like! In fact, its better if your ass-ugly because then people might think your real and not a BOT! Where were we, oh yeah, Testimonials! I don't care if it's your mom and your pet cockatiel! Get somebody to vouch for you! Next, take the best quotes out of the books you promote and slap them on your website.
Always open with a piece you've read, what you liked about it (and when I say liked I mean know the theme if it's literary, how it made you feel if its romance, how you almost shit yourself if its horror or how wet it made you if its erotica. Kidding on that last one. Unless you're the type who can talk about sex in a sterile manner, if you can, you're probably a sociopath and that's ok. Sociopaths are usually really good at their jobs. Just don't scare your clients away.) and recite your favorite quote. I don't care if its cheesy. It just on messenger anyway!
And Lastly, and most Importantly, know your Trade! You need to be able to craft beautiful, poetic emails about what it is you provide that is so so very valuable. Remember, you're dealing with authors which means you're dealing with writers, which means that you're dealing with lovers, which means that you're dealing with dreamers. The good ones are a hard sell because they know what dreams look like! They write them every day!

Fight Club in the Age of Big Tech
Fight Club, written by Chuck Palahniuk, follows an unnamed protagonist who, disillusioned and suffering from insomnia, attends multiple support groups for people with various afflictions. On a business trip he meets Tyler Durden, and together they form Fight Club, which expands and evolves into Project Mayhem, a terrorist organisation based on anarchy and anti-consumerism.
Today, despite the backlash against globalisation and the waning of American power, consumerism still abounds, especially in the digital world. This in China as well as the West — Amazon and Alibaba are two of the largest retail companies in the world, both imperial in their scope and reach. And it is not hard to see echoes of the protagonist’s experience here — our online shopping experiences have removed us from the high street, where we otherwise might have met friends and gone out for coffee; targeted advertising and surveillance capitalism has eroded our privacy and allowed faceless corporations into our homes; and the supremacy of huge corporations has reduced our consumer choices, giving us the illusion of choice (how many times do you go on Amazon looking for a product, and see numerous listings of essentially identical products?).
Big Tech would position itself as the disrupter, upending our previous way of life to liberate us, connect us, and give us greater freedom. Social media was supposed to help oppressed peoples defeat autocracy. But what if Big Tech is now the face of faceless consumer culture? What if that is what we should be liberating ourselves from? In Fight Club, the goal of Project Mayhem was to erase human history so that we could start afresh; the new society would be primal, free of societal controls. What would that mean today? Destroying and erasing the Internet?
And yet it is in the digital world that people find their communities. Fight Club is a novel about the search for identity, finding escape and meaning when we’re alienated in the real world. In the digital space, people can find others like themselves and form bonds. For the most part this is innocuous, enriching, liberating; it can also mean that, like in the novel, people retreat into echo chambers and fall down a pathway to extremism. Like in Fight Club, it can lead people to do things they never thought they were capable of.
Towards the end of the novel, we find out that Tyler Durden was a projection of the protagonist’s self-conscious. In his desperation and disillusionment, the protagonist creates this idealised version of what, on some level, he wants to be. Might we, in creating online personas for the digital space, be experiencing something similar?
