I’ve been thinking today about off ramps in long running stories, especially book series.
By that I mean like, places where a person could stop reading and have a satisfying ending even if they’re not yet at the actual ending. (Someone tell me if there’s an established Tvtropes name for this I’m missing.)
Now, a lot of book series will have an off ramp at the end of book 1, because many first books are written without promise of a sequel. Like sure, there might be a sequel hook, but the actual second book is still up to publisher whims in most cases. So you can read All Systems Red or The Thief or A Madness of Angels and have a perfectly satisfying ambiguous-end sci-fi story or middle grade fantasy romp or inverted murder mystery revenge quest without ever picking up book 2. This is definitely an off ramp but it’s not necessarily the interesting or revealing kind because again. Whims of the publisher.
There’s also stories that have an off ramp after every installment. Leverage is famous for this—they had a philosophy of having every season be a satisfying ending, which says a lot both about the writers and about the story they were trying to tell.
But I think the most interesting ramps are the ones where by design or by circumstance, there’s a single off-ramp somewhere in the middle. One spot where unless someone tells you there’s more, you’d never be unsatisfied with leaving halfway through.
Sometimes these will be signaled in some way, where there’s a big timeskip after the off-ramp, or the series changes names or has a spin-off, or the POV changes, or after book 3 the author publishes a short story collection before hopping back in to novels, or the series suddenly jumps from being only novellas to a chunky 120k novel. (The Raksura books, Percy Jackson/HoE, Matthew Swift/Magicals Anonymous, and Murderbot all do one or more of these)
But sometimes off ramps aren’t visible in series order or marketing. Sometimes they’re organic to where a story happens to leave off at the end of an installment.
The queen’s thief has one of these after King Of Attolia. I know this was a satisfying ending because for seven years I thought it was the end. My local library didn’t have A Conspiracy of Kings, so I thought it was a trilogy. And you really can leave it there! KoA ends with Gen back in his element and recognized as king, the main internal threat to Irene neutralized, and peace on the peninsula. The Mede aren’t yet the immediate threat they are in the back half of the series, since up through KoA they’re mainly represented by the magus’s vague warnings and Nahuseresh, whom Irene thinks circles around. There’s no real reason to assume the Mede are a threat within the scope of the series. Now I absolutely prefer getting the whole story, but KoA is a damn solid off-ramp for anyone who feels like exiting there.
And that’s one kind of off ramp where the end you get is pretty similar in tone (mostly happy) to the one you get if you go on to the rest of the series. I’ve also read books where you can off ramp successfully right at the lowest point in the series and get a tragedy out of a series that ultimately ends happy, or leave at a high point and get a happier end than the main one, or exit at an ambiguous point and continue on with ambiguity. The Giver sequels make it pretty clear what happened to Jonas and Gabe at the end of the book. but you don’t have to read them or have that question answered if you want to.
I don’t have a really solid conclusion to draw here except that I think the positioning of off ramps says a lot about authors and stories, and choosing whether or not to take an off ramp says a lot about readers.

characters i‘d love to see as a rocky beach crimes investigator
morton we already know he can do it from tödliche spur, he deals with weird rich people on a day to day basis, there is something there for sure, he‘s classy he‘s sassy, maybe with cotta as backup
kelly we know she‘s an absolute queen & i‘d love to know more about her, bonus points if she‘s investigating with jeffery
onkel titus maybe something involving his past at the circus, his backstory sounds interesting from what we know
cotta but it would have to be outside of his normal police job. maybe he has some time off & somthing happens. something happens and no one at work believes him or maybe something with dirty cops again, would have to heavily feature goodween
monique carrera something in the music & club scene, seems unlikely as she‘s not a „big“ recurring character but i love her & it seems fun
jelena my beloved. we know she has what it takes & she deserves to be the main character, i know he already got a book but would love to see her & skinny interact more i kinda liked their dynamic in toteninsel
lesley always something going on at booksmith, i just like her
allie jamison always some weird shit happening in her life anyway, i think a lot of people really don‘t like her but i do
john william melvin roger „bill“ andrews mainly to investigate whats up with his name, but seriously his job should be enough set up, also dilf
clarissa franklin oh boy what an unpopular opinion but she is an interesting character
honerable mentions:
- august august silly name silly guy main character energy, even though he did kinda piss me of in feuriges auge
- bennington peck fun guy what can i say
- ty cassey canon might have forgotten you but i have not
- brittany another unpopular one ig & i think she‘s in jail but another kinda fun evil girlboss or whatever
- george he‘d be on the list above but already kinda had his moment with reynold but i‘d love to see more

Hello! I think you've talked about how you think that Daniel should have been expedition leader instead of Sam in season 4 due to the military thing. So how would that change things according to you wrt plot, interpersonal dynamics, characters, etc? Would love to know your take on it.
'should have been' is probably a little too strong, since it's mostly because i love him and i want him in my house, but other reasons include:
i want to keep the expedition under civilian command. this is vital to me.
it would be nice to soften Daniel back because the last couple of seasons in SG-1 made him sooo jaded and military-like that i want to remove him from that environment to see what happens
i want a bit of reversal, in that it's now Daniel stepping into a place that used to be Elizabeth's and he's now the interloper who has big shoes to fill (Elizabeth is not there to see it but the audience - i.e. Me - can draw comparisons as a result)
the expedition needs a Daniel, in that he's a good way to expand SGA lore and the Alterans and also as someone who will Not Go Quietly Into The Night in terms of war crimes and harebrained Sheppard-concocted schemes
First Contact and The Lost Tribe have proven that Daniel and Rodney are hilariously brilliant together
i want Daniel's presence to push Teyla's character development by LIGHT-YEARS (like the opposite of dead wife manpain. he is alive and in her space and she wants to cause him pain because he is wrongwrongwrong)
things that are likely going to happen with Daniel in charge:
restructuring of the science department (to Rodney's immense displeasure and secret relief)
the great Daniel and Sheppard enemieship
maybe the resolution of the Michael plot line would've been better idk
we can imagine a great SG1 Team Leader to SGC base commander journey for Sam, as was her right
we may finally get the Sheppard Military Mutiny that I always wanted with Elizabeth (less nuanced because he and Daniel aren't friends, but still determinative)
i just want Daniel to say to Sheppard's face that disobeying orders is not anti-establishment praxis when he's still, you know, wearing a uniform
we would likely get to explore the city more because Daniel's at the helm and he has Priorities
Ronon is the only AR-1 member who (openly) likes him. this is PAIN for Sheppard and plain alien to Rodney (Daniel and Ronon bond over memorializing Sateda)
MORE. ALTERAN. LORE.

Things seem very difficult for you, my old friend. People no longer have time to learn your stories, nor do they stop to listen to someone tell a short one. I think technology will make you extinct, it will leave you forgotten, dusty and corroded forever, until there is not a single generation left who will miss remembering these masters who taught without saying a single word, so much precious information, so much knowledge, smiles and tears would appear without anyone noticing. Before, they would spread throughout the house, you were there everywhere, every year you would multiply, and today it is so rare to see you in homes. You are only on your cell phones or on TV. You are just an ornament gathering dust. Soon you will be the new missing link. If it were not for the young warriors who still resist, you would no longer exist. I am very sad for you, my friend. dear,my old, teacher and friend Book.

My friend and fellow Napoleonic translator Jonas De Neef is having a sale on his books for the holiday season. If you haven’t checked out any of his work by now, this is a great opportunity to grab some excellent Napoleonic primary accounts and support a budding historian.
