I would have taken your injuries if that were possible, just so you could go on chasing your goals and chasing your ambitions like we did together over the past years. I'm still trying to accept the fact that I had to retire. And Jonas & Wout, I don't think you realise how big of an impact you have on this process. You guys give me so much energy when I see videos from you back on the bike, recovering, getting better, improving and chasing your goals. You are able to realize the most remarkable things together as a team. Side by side. Now I'll be there this summer on the side of the road in France. I will always be on your side.

🎥 A TRUE RENAISSANCE: Our Tour de France 2024 - Inside the Beehive

I must say I have never considered a companion Jonas before! I am looking for a companion for my recently rescued Mathieu. He is very shy and reserved and I fear he has not experienced much enrichment in his life. What are the best companion breeds I should be looking at?

Firstly, congratulations on adopting your new Mathieu! Every Mathieu deserves a loving forever home, especially rescued Mathieus who may never have known one. The ideal companion depends not only on your Mathieu's temperament, but also on exactly which subspecies he is. Here are the top five species of bonded companion that we recommend!

1) A Wout

The classic pick for good reason. The warm-blooded, adaptable Wout is compatible with most subspecies, and tends to have a protective and nuturing personality ideal for a shy rescued Mathieu. Wouts are extremely capable hunters, capable of partnering your Mathieu over most types of terrain. Many Mathieus find their companion Wout enjoys acting as a portable heat lamp, and snuggling into their Wout's soft fur whilst basking may be comforting for a Mathieu left with sensory issues. Diet is largely similar, and the omnivorous Wout will enjoy both live prey and any wet or dry food that your Mathieu is established on.

Best for: All working breeds

Not recommended for: True aquatic Mathieus (whilst Wouts can swim, they do not hunt underwater), desert Mathieus (cooling is often more important than staying warm), fancy Mathieus (most prefer a bonded companion who can alter their display patterns, as opposed to the darkly-furred Wout).

Similar species you might also consider: A Luke or Mads.

2) A Pippo

Larger than a Mathieu, Pippos are persistence hunters who live in large, affectionate family groups. Combined with an warm, patient nature, a Pippo may be ideal for a Mathieu who needs the physical reassurance of a larger companion, and is unsure how to make friends while socialising. Pippos are extremely outgoing, and will soon make themselves and their Mathieu a welcome part of every group at the park! Their dietary range does vary slightly from a Mathieu (it is not recommended to allow your Mathieu to consume large amounts of Nutella) so this may be a factor to consider.

Best for: Working breeds, temperate forest Mathieus.

Not recommended for: Mountain Mathieus (Pippos struggle at altitude or over elevated terrain).

Similar species you might also consider: An Eduardo or Stefan.

3) A Primož

This often overlooked species is ideal for a shy Mathieu who may need a gentle introduction to fun. Whilst a Tadej or a Jasper are the more common choices, their boisterous natures may be overwhelming for a rescued Mathieu who has had little opportunity for joy. The playful Primož combines this with a calmer demeanor, and this may be comforting for a Mathieu who has been raised in chaotic, unenriching conditions. Primožes range into higher altitudes than many Mathieus, however they are equally capable at hunting on flatter terrain. Their display patterns are as responsive as those of any Mathieu, and this familiarity can be helpful if your Mathieu was raised without opportunities to socialise beyond his own species.

Best for: Fancy Mathieus, mountain Mathieus.

Not recommended for: Bog or fen Mathieus (Primožes are fastidious and do not enjoy mud).

Similar species you might also consider: An Egan or Adam.

4) A Jonas

The calming Jonas lives in small, tightly-knit family groups. This makes them ideal choices as a solo bonded companion. For a Mathieu who has been accustomed to considering his nesting spot the only place of safety that he knows, the gentle Jonas may be the perfect companion to help him begin exploring the world. Wild Jonases are rarely encountered in the same habitat as Mathieus, but the two species make surpisingly compatible hunting partners. The more agile, nimbler Jonas will harry and drive the prey from above, directly into the path of the waiting Mathieu. Jonases need to bask as regularly a Mathieu, and it may increase your Mathieu's feelings of confidence as he curls up around his smaller companion under their heat lamp.

Best for: Working breeds, desert Mathieus, true or semi-aquatic Mathieus.

Not recommended for: Fancy Mathieus (the simple display patterns of a Jonas are merely an indicator of how recently he has basked, as compared to the complex social signalling of the fancy Mathieu).

Similar species you might also consider: A Matteo or Ben.

5) A Bini

Once a niche option, the joyful and loving Bini is perfect for a nervous Mathieu, or one who has been deprived of praise and reassurance. With a devoted nature and love of snuggles, a Bini will shower your Mathieu with physical affection. Binis in the wild build elaborate nests and adorn them with small gifts to their mates or bonded companions. This may be a special experience for a mistreated Mathieu who has never experienced such consideration. They vocalise across a range often compared to singing, and most Mathieus will enjoy chirruping along. With an even faster pounce than a Mathieu, a Bini makes a compatible hunting partner, and one who will always prioritise his Mathieu's wellbeing.

Best for: Fancy Mathieus, true aquatic Mathieus (Binis are accomplished underwater hunters), semi-aquatic Mathieus

Not recommended for: Mountain Mathieus.

Similar species you might also consider: An Arnaud or Jonathan.
