At the risk of being 2024's biggest clown jester, but uhhhhhh... they might have confirmed that we'll be getting the miharu arc in this season? Matoba's voice line in the trailer (which sounds a lot like the one from chapter 92) ended up being different (accurately adapted from chapter 89.5 instead) when that scene aired in this week's episode! 🥳

Okay so I immediately want to disclaim that I DID say an incorrect fact at the end of the episode: the Catholic Church actually updated their guidelines for exorcisms in 1999. And now to say what the episode is about: this week we discussed My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix, a book I put off reading for so long that it became a running joke in our household. And y’all we are so qualified to talk about this book. We are Grady Hendrix fans. We are best friends. And at least fifty percent of us have a psychological fixation on the concepts of exorcisms.
Anyway, the book? Turns out? It's good. We talk about it this episode, along with like a LOT of discussion of exorcisms. The conversation is not carried equally between the two hosts, I’ll admit that. Cyrus in this episode is doing the equivalent of meditating underneath a waterfall (the waterfall is made of facts about exorcisms). Other discussion points include: girl best friends, the inherent horror of no one believing you, and how goddamn hard it is to read a book at the hospital.

List of Books I Read While Working Nights At an Acute Mental Health Hospital That Weirded Out My Coworkers When I Explained the Plot
Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson- lesbians and cannibalism
The Entire Locked Tomb Series by Tamsy Muir: lesbian necromancers in space with no reliable narrators
Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix- not really weird but explaining the meta final girls plot was hard and I fumbled it I think
Starling House by Alex E. Harrow: it's family trauma and cycles The Book
Blackwater by Michael McDowell: Evil Mermaid Except You're Definitely Rooting For Her
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix: it's what it sounds like except even cooler imo
My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix (I was on a kick, okay?): what it sounds like except they should have been lesbianing it up at the end and they weren't and that was disappointing but the rest of the book 10/10
Swamplandia! by Karen Russel: wow these siblings tore my heart out i love them but also WOOF look at a TW/CW list before you read it
The Whitehall Manor Books by L.V. Pires: First book, LOVED. Cursed family? LOVED. The other two books? Eh. Honestly, don't bother

Ok, are yall ready to yap about WTF is going on with Carver!?
I first want to start off by saying I get that what Carver saw in 12x13 was extremely triggering for him, but what I don't understand is this. He goes to Texas, links up with an old fling for 6 weeks according to the time jump & brings her back to Chicago.
He completely avoids Violet & when he does talk to her, he is the one that said they should move forward as friends. Even after finding out about Tori deleting the text message, he was so quick to fall right back in with her, but he wouldn't even give Violet a chance to plead her case.
Carver decided to lie to Tori & go to Violets's party, so why is he acting like the people at 51 are all of a sudden his enemies? I'm so confused, and it doesn't make sense. Clearly, Tori is manipulating him by keeping him liquored up & dragging him out every night to keep him busy & tired. She doesn't allow Carver to sit still long enough because if he does, he'll have time to actually think/process.
What I'm trying to figure out is if Carver is hell bent on this Tori chick because he feels like Violet rejected him or is directly tied to the call from 12x13.... is it both?
I've said this a few times, but I'll say it again. The damage they are doing to Carvers' character development is baffling to me because i don't understand what the outcome of this storyline is supposed to be. Carvers' overall attitude & presence on my screen is starting to irk me because I want to feel bad for the guy but in the same breath it's hard to overlook all the shit we've already went through with him. Atp, i don't even ship Mikarver anymore because I dont want this version of Carver anywhere near Violet.
Why make Jake a series regular if the intent was to just ruin his character. He literally just got in half of the fandoms' good graces in the back half of S11/ early 12 because of this same shit.
I get the theme of the S13 is hauntings & ppl from the past but we're 6 episodes into the season & we have unearthed NO new information about Carver but we have been vividly reminded why we didn't like him in S11.
He bumped heads with Gallo, and now he's snapping at Ritter. He was getting drunk, getting into brawls & getting locked up now he's showing up to damn near every shift hungover. He was snappy with Stella in S11 & though he hasn't been out of line with her yet the fact that she had to get out of the rig when they were supposed to be responding to a call to come find him....
So like what's the wake-up call & when is it coming? Because my tolerance is starting to dwindle & if his behavior continues to spill over into the house & dynamic of Truck 81 further widening the target on Stella Kidds back with Pascal.....
Tumblr media
Idk, am I being too hard on him? Like I said, I feel for the guy, but how much more before we can turn the page? I want the Sam Carver that was there for Gallo & Gibson. The one that showed up for his LT when Shep was outside the loft. The one that told Violet nothing bad was going to happen to him, especially on the dance floor. 🥹

my debut horror novel about gay people and possession horror is out October 1, 2024!
The unofficial description: a priest who is totally 100% not gay at all (he is gay) realizes his "dear friend" who he absolutely does not have a crush on (he has a crush) who happens to be a DILF is probably possessed. meditations on love and faith and grief follow.
The official description:
A psychic priest is thrown headfirst into a battle of faith and love against the forces of Hell when his dearest friend becomes possessed. Father Isaias Flores may not have much, but he has his faith—and his dear friend Hector to keep him anchored when he is mired in self-doubt. But when Hector’s daughter, Violet, comes to Isaias with concerns that her father is acting strangely, Isaias’s doubts only increase, now with no one to keep him steadfast. For Hector seems to be possessed by something darker than even the traumas of the past, and Violet has nowhere else to turn to save her only family. This is a problem that may require divine intervention—the rites of exorcism. Unsure of his place in the church, doubting his gifts from God, and struggling to make sense of his feelings for the man he had thought was only a friend, Isaias isn’t sure if he is strong enough to save anyone’s soul from damnation. For what can one man do against the torments of Hell?
It's going to be Zon exclusive for at least a bit (for KU reasons) but if you're interested, the ebook can be pre-ordered here or added to goodreads here. ARC sign ups are also available for the next few weeks!

I got to meet Grady Hendrix last night!! He was so kind, I told him I'm a horror writer and just finished my MFA, and he was asking about my book and what I write. He also gave a hilarious performance presentation about witches for his new book Witchcraft for Wayward Girls. Highly reccomend going to one of his tour stops if they come near you!

YA Gothic Horror
As some one who likes dark and gothic YA books I thought I would share some of my favorites
Warning, all of these books are dark and have gory themes
Also I’ll post more reviews on #museandreview
1. The May Queen Murders by Sarah Jude
Stay on the roads. Don’t enter the woods. Never go out at night. Those are the rules in Rowan’s Glen, a remote farming community in the Missouri Ozarks where Ivy Templeton’s family has lived for centuries. It’s an old-fashioned way of life, full of superstition and traditions, and sixteen-year-old Ivy loves it. The other kids at school may think the Glen kids are weird, but Ivy doesn’t care—she has her cousin Heather as her best friend. The two girls share everything with each other—or so Ivy thinks. When Heather goes missing after a May Day celebration, Ivy discovers that both her best friend and her beloved hometown are as full of secrets as the woods that surround them.
This book is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. It’s dark, it’s gritty, it’s full of folk lore that small towns and farm communities often have. There’s mystery and side romance between the Ivy and her childhood best friend.
Triggers- Bury your gays, Murder, physical assault, and animal cruelty.
2. What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo
Eleanor Zarrin has been estranged from her wild family for years. When she flees boarding school after a horrifying incident, she goes to the only place she thinks is safe: the home she left behind. But when she gets there, she struggles to fit in with her monstrous relatives, who prowl the woods around the family estate and read fortunes in the guts of birds. Eleanor finds herself desperately trying to hold the family together — in order to save them all, Eleanor must learn to embrace her family of monsters and tame the darkness inside her.
This is a great book that talks about feeling ostracized from your own family and desperately trying to find your place, even in a strange family like that Zarrin’s. Once again another small town horror (are we seeing a pattern lol) where monsters far too familiar roam the woods and your own home.
Triggers- Animal Death, Child Abuse, Death, Grief, Homophobia, Mind Control, Trauma, and Xenophobia
3. The Fairytale Experiment by Amy Hoyer
A high school psychology class volunteers for “The Fairytale Experiment” to test Doctor Arthur Fae’s theory of ‘conscious travel’. Olivia Beaumont and her classmates are consciously teleported to a world of fairytales, where they are all assigned roles of heroes and villains they must play, living out the stories we all grew up with. As their journey progresses, though, they realize this experiment is darker and much more dangerous than they ever could have imagined, and right when they think they understand everything, the game is changed again. Join Olivia, Hunter, Phoebe, Jack, Wendy, and the rest of their class as they navigate the Fairytale Experiment.
I found this book of TikTok in 2020 and oh boy did I enjoy this. It’s filled with familiar fairytales like Beauty and the Beast, Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland just to name a few. We get little backstories to even some of the smallest background characters. There’s body horror and psychological horror throughout the whole book and I really home she writes a second book
Triggers- violent imagery, body horror, physical and emotional abuse, manipulation, gaslighting, captivity and control, disordered eating, and trauma related flashbacks
4. The Good Demon by Jimmy Cajoleas
Clare has been miserable since her exorcism. The preacher that rid her of evil didn’t understand that her demon—simply known as Her—was like a sister to Clare. Now, Clare will do almost anything to get Her back. After a chance encounter with the son of the preacher who exorcised her, Clare goes on an adventure through the dark underbelly of her small Southern town, discovering its deep-seated occult roots. As she searches for Her, she must question the fine lines between good and evil, love and hate, and religion and free will. Vivid and sharp, The Good Demon tells the unusual story of friendship amid dark Gothic horror.
I found this book in a resale store not long after this book came out. (big thanks to my hippy grandma who bought this for me) This is the book who created my love for books FILLED with religious imagery and trauma. Not gonna lie it’s been a minute since I’ve read this book so I can’t say as much as I can on the others.
Triggers- SA, substance abuse, animal cruelty, religious trauma, addiction, demonic possession, violence, slut-shaming, poor representation of other religions, parental neglect, and self deletion
5. My Best Friends Exorcismbt by Grady Hendrix
The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. Abby’s investigation leads her to some startling discoveries—and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?
If you know anything about Grady Hendrix you know this man love a dark book. There’s body horror, theirs 80’s body image issues, and of course being in love with your best friend but never actually admitting it (technically it’s not confirmed but my god is Abby gay for Gretchen)
Triggers (there’s a lot)- Alcohol, Animal death, Assault, Attempted murder, Attempted self deletion, Blood, Cheating, Child abuse, Cults, Demons, Drug abuse, Eating disorders, Vomiting, Gore, Hallucinations, Homophobia, Misogyny, Poisoning, Potential SA, Racist language, Self-harm, Sexism
These book are NOT light or easy reads. They are dark, they are disturbing, and they are gory. If you need read these books, please do your research on what triggers they have (I know I listed them but just in case I missed them) I have gone into books without knowing their triggers and they were very similar to these and because I didn’t know, it was very hard to read and I had to stop (this was for school and EVERYONE in the class had to stop reading it)
Please be safe, please be careful, your mental health comes first

Some day I want to make a write up about the different magic circles we see across DMC, including both the ones for Air Hike and the one that appears in on the floor of Dante's shop in the intro to DMC1. Sure we see him use Devil Arms and stuff in combat, but I think it'd be fun to explore all the other stuff he's learned over the years like wards and sigils and so on.
