after reading several novels in which the love interest is basically inhumanly hot and ripped i would just like to say god bless alix e harrow for writing a romance with a guy who is described as looking like a decrepit scarecrow in need of a haircut

The Best Books I Read in 2024
Tumblr media
It’s the most magical time of the yearwhen I look back at my favourite works of fiction! I got a lot of reading in in 2024, in part due to a cunning scheme in which I made sure to always have an ebook on my phone, slowly yet successfully training myself to dip into a novel instead of tripping down into a Twitter hole (not that I’m on Twitter anymore; and not that it’s even called Twitter…) every time I had the urge to Scroll and look at Content. As always, I’ve enjoyed an eclectic mix of vibes and genres: on this list we’ve got a range from whimsical to harrowing, we’ve got high fantasy, contemporary rom-coms, modern gothic, and some fun hybrids including horror-romance and fantasy-mystery. More adult/general fiction than YA, you’ll notice, as I continue to explore the world outside my thesis niche—but I’ve always got room for a couple.
Without further ado and without making this post any longer than it already is, let’s begin! Let me know if you also read any of these, and what you thought, and of course feel free to tell me all about your own favourite reads of 2024!

How selfish, how fundamentally silly, that he should start wanting to live right when he ought to die.

Holiday Book Haul✨ This is everything I got. This will be my last haul for a while. I have a lot of physical books to read now. And once I read them all I want to sell some that I didn’t like, or give them away, maybe donate them. There’s a library near me, but I’ve never donated before so I’m going to sus that out for my own knowledge.

Books of 2024: STARLING HOUSE by Alix E. Harrow.
Still in my Haunted House Era™, finished this one this afternoon, had a great time!! Harrow somehow always puts Just Enough of my personal catnip in her books, and I've really enjoyed everything of hers I've read so far (WITCHES, JANUARY, and now this, which was decidedly more modern--I'm a fan!).
Like with THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES, I really enjoyed the sibling dynamics in STARLING HOUSE. Opal and Jasper were delightful, and the ONLY valid Miscommunication Plot Point is one-upping each other on [SPOILER REDACTED]--wholesome, perfect, no notes. I loved how sharp and vicious Opal was, and I loved how insufferable Arthur was, and I loved Jasper (who, me? having a soft spot for clever kind teenage boys?? whaaaat), and Bev, and the hellcat, and THE HOUSE!!! The House was great, I'm making so many NaNo prep notes over here.
I also enjoyed the parallels between Eleanor and Opal and how cyclic violence was emphasized through the circular framing. AND it was fun piecing together the whole manuscript's structure--definitely a break from, say, VanderMeer, or Le Guin, but I liked the footnotes and the offset fonts and figuring out who was telling which stories and Why It Was Framed Like That. Good book! Good time!! Do recommend!

Starting my 4th book in just as many days. A blind recommendation from a friend. I did read the blurb at some point, but I have no memory of it. No idea what the genre is, just blindly trusting my friend. Gonna be an adventure

List of Books I Read While Working Nights At an Acute Mental Health Hospital That Weirded Out My Coworkers When I Explained the Plot
Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson- lesbians and cannibalism
The Entire Locked Tomb Series by Tamsy Muir: lesbian necromancers in space with no reliable narrators
Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix- not really weird but explaining the meta final girls plot was hard and I fumbled it I think
Starling House by Alex E. Harrow: it's family trauma and cycles The Book
Blackwater by Michael McDowell: Evil Mermaid Except You're Definitely Rooting For Her
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix: it's what it sounds like except even cooler imo
My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix (I was on a kick, okay?): what it sounds like except they should have been lesbianing it up at the end and they weren't and that was disappointing but the rest of the book 10/10
Swamplandia! by Karen Russel: wow these siblings tore my heart out i love them but also WOOF look at a TW/CW list before you read it
The Whitehall Manor Books by L.V. Pires: First book, LOVED. Cursed family? LOVED. The other two books? Eh. Honestly, don't bother

Really looking forward to reading these! My partner is a high fantasy reader so I'll probably end up knowing the stories for these second hand if my partner gets to them before me. That's not a problem though, I'll forget the story 72 hrs anyway and I won't feel guilty about not reading them immediately lol.
