Most disliked popular books??
Cuz I gotta be messy lol
I love being messy on this app 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Most disliked 🤔🤔 idk if these are popular books, but I'll never read a single word from these books/authors because fuck em 🤣 and ik you aint ask for all this but here ya go 💀
1. Uglies by Scott Westerfield. The main character was SO annoying. And inconsistent asf. I can handle annoying, I can't handle inconsistent. Like it completely turned me off of anything he'll ever write.
2. Lightlark by Alex Aster. The book itself was a smash up of every better YA book to come about, which, whatever ppl can write what they want. But the author? Trash. All up and down tiktok, she makes it seem like she got popular because of her writing. When her family is Uber rich and paid to publish the book, and is paying to produce the movie version. It's an entire no from me. Like be honest about it. Plus the main character made a lot of dumbass moves that had nothing to do with the main concept. Im convinced it was AI tbh.
3. Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K Hamilton. Its an old vampire series, though I think she's still writing books 🤔 started in the 90s. I was with the series up until...book 7. The series followed a really cool necromancer who got into urban fantasy shenanigans, she wasn't oversexed. A little self insert (no shame in the game for that) In fact, she had a lot of hangups about sex, much to the annoyance of the guys who were interested in her. And it was very much a mature series dealing with relationships that I appreciated. But im huge on consent. And in book 7, she does a lot of shady shit to like..."force" the main character to completely abandon all her hangups and blames it on a version of mating bullshit and a mix of magic. Im like naw, fuck that. You can't cheat your way to changing a character and she fn lost me. Im never reading that shit again.
4. Twisted Love by Ana Huang. That shit was boooooring. And 200 pages too long. (I think it was like 440 pages altogether). Enemies to lovers is always hit and miss for me chuz its never really enemies. They're juss two ppl who bicker a lot until they have sex. Fine. Whatever. But gawdt this was boring. Maybe I'm juss not into the bad boy being an asshole in order to win someone's affections 🤔 like...he's gotta have something to redeem him. All the twists were obvious asf, the sex wasn't even that great. Turned me off the author completely.
5. Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas. See number 4 lol. 200 pages too long, the main characters had 0 chemistry. The main character served entirely no purpose. And there was shit that came up at the end that was never introduced and yet became a major plot point. Idk how they can turn enemies to lovers and fake dating into a terrible time, but they did 😪 never reading anything from that author again 💀
I could go on, fr. I'm picky dammit 🤣🤣🤣

What types of books do you read? I'm curious!
Mainly low fantasy/ usually with strong romance subplots. My favourite is some sort of connection to folklore/mythos which stays quite grounded. Horror/suspense is my other love, as well as gothic, creepy stuff that sticks in your subconscious like old gum.

4. Favorite science fiction book(s)
Ooooh i think my Favorite piece of sci fi is actually a novella but i feel like no one is likely to ask the 'favorite novella' question so I'll list it here anyway: Silently And Very Fast by Catherynne Valente, which is available to read online in full from Clarkesworld. It's weird, it's emotional, it's a little sad, it blurs the lines about what it means to be human/a person: and that is my favorite combination of things.
Similarly, the Murderbot Diaries series as a whole is high up there for me, for their combination of fun romp, meaning of being a person, and closed-off character learning to open up.
Actual novel-books. I feel like if I read it now I would probably go "hm" about some parts that I'm sure have not aged so well but Snow Crash was formative to me as a young teen as well as to the direction science fiction itself as a genre, so i'm giving it a spot on the list.
And lastly, even Douglas Adams agreed that he was not really writing sci fi but just using a sci fi setting as a backdrop, but I can't discount my years of enjoyment from Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy either. Some runners-up (runner up's???? idk): I really enjoy the Vorkosigan Saga books though the later ones sort of decline in quality i think. But the first ones following Miles as a main character, The Warrior's Apprentice and The Vor Game, especially were a bright ray of sunshine when i was drudging through "classic" sci fi novels in 2017. Loved the Imperial Radch books because we have found again an example of my favorite trope: an AI/robot sort of entity becoming A Person (im just a sucker for nonhumanity themes). I also did really like Ninefox Gambit and The Three-Body Problem for hard sci fi, but liked the following books in their respective trilogies less. Also not a 'book' but the multimedia sort of webcomic 17776 is another story i love. ok i have to cut myself off or i'll go on forever
21. The book(s) on your school reading list you actually enjoyed
I think the book I had the most fun reading in class was in 4th grade when we did The Westing Game. It was a little mystery story and it was one of the few times I didn't just read the whole thing ahead and we'd really talk about what we thoguht was gonna happen next, whodonnit, motives, etc. And at the end my class (which was actually only like 7 people because it was the advanced reading class) all dressed up as a different character and brought in props for them and other classes came in and could talk to us and read little synopses and try to guess who did the murder themselves. Except since there were more than 7 characters we also had to make a bunch of dummys of the missing characters to sit in those chairs and afterwards the lifeless yet life-size plushie of Sydelle Pulaski lived in my basement for like. 8 years. no idea what happened to her... sorry Sydelle!
36. Your absolute most favorite character(s) from any book you've ever read.
ooouurrghhhh... this is so hard but i think just due to how immediately and profoundly i imprinted on her, and how the archtype of her character played out similarly in subsequent books and every time it ruined me like an earthquake, i have to go with Rachel from Animorphs. she's angry! she's violent! she's afraid of what that means she might become! so she lets herself become a tool for the war so she doesn't have to dwell on the question because if she does, it might break her, and they can't afford that so she shuts away those fears into a little box. uhg every time i reread the series i get 1000 emotions about her all over again.

#2 for the book worm ask game!
(ask game)
2. Favorite fantasy book(s).
(Eeeeexcellent, I do love fantasy books. Though how I'm gonna narrow it to only a few I've got no idea. Okay. I'm going to remove the very obvious choices like Lord of the Rings (though it is one of my faves)).
---
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monstrous Regiment. I love the entire Discworld series (especially The Witches) but I've also got a huge soft spot in my heart for Terry Pratchett's take on 'a girl dresses like a boy to go to war' (and thinks of everything except some spare socks in- erm... the right place). Along with Polly, the squad consists of a vampire, a troll, an Igor, a religious fanatic and two very, very close "friends" (and yes, the official summary put the friends in quotes too). And everyone has their own secret.
I love basically everything about this book and I can't tell you guys any of it because it would spoil all the fun.
The Goblin Emperor. This one's a story filled with light. Maia the half goblin son of the elven Emperor was never supposed to take the throne (or to ever even be at court. because racism). And then everyone ahead of him dies in a single "accident" and suddenly he's the new Emperor. Maia is a good person, and a kind one, and despite everything that gets thrown at him he keeps hold of that understanding of right and wrong and refuses to bend.
(I have to mention that the language of the writing is kinda hard to get into in the beginning, and the characters's have very complicated and long names, but once you get into it it really did enhance the story for me).
Good Omens. An Angel and a Demon try to stop the apocalypse and instead lose the Antichrist. I've loved that book for like a decade now and if I don't put it on a list of my faves that list would be a lie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The King of Attolia. Third in The Queen's Thief series and my favorite one out of all of them. I've always enjoyed Outsider POV in fics. And here is a book that just... proves why. We've got Eugenides and Irene, the Thief and the Queen, and we know them from the two previous books. And adore them. But the story isn't from their POV, it's from the POV of Costis, a Queen's guard who's suddenly gotten assigned to the King. The useless, weak, undeserving king that as far as Costis is concerned doesn't deserve to even kiss the Queen's boots. And it's hilarious to read the story from the eyes of someone who knows so much less than us. And so satisfying, as he begins to understand.
(I recommend the whole series and am personally glad to have read them in the published order but Megan Whalen Turner has stated that she wrote them in a way that allows you to jump in at any point you want).
The Raven Tower. The story is from the viewpoint of a sentient, omniscient rock whose name is Strength and Patience of the Hill and it is the GREATEST THING EVER. The gods are real and must be very careful with their words, because if they speak a lie the reality will alter to make that lie the truth but if the lie is bigger than the power of the god... well. Inspired by Hamlet.
(the book also has a trans man as the main character; the other main character? The sentient rock is the narrator but the largest part of the story focuses on Eolo).
A Natural History of Dragons. The first book from The Memoirs of Lady Trent (and honestly it would probably be more honest to say that every single book from this series fits the category of fave but I'm putting up the first here because this isn't a series where you should skip ahead). The book focuses on the life of Isabella as narrated by her older self. This is the story how a Scirland lady bucked all tradition and became a world renowned expert on the Natural History of Dragons.
(this series has a piece of my heart and always will).
---
(and finally, here's some more of my favorite fantasy books that I also adore and would totally ramble about but I got tired of typing).

Book ask #4
4. What book/series/author do you think has most heavily informed who you are today?
I’ve had a few different authors whose works really sunk in my heart and soul and moral code. However, by far my most explicit guide (like quoting it in my head when dealing with something) has been Lois McMaster Bujold.
I first read her Vorkosigan saga starting when I was fifteen and just kept learning from Miles’ mistakes and Cordelia’s aphorisms and Ekaterin's realizations. It all really stuck with me - I kept rereading a lot of the books through college. But it's been a bit since I reread any of the early series books, I should do that again.
I've mostly been reading her World of Five Gods books for the past few years. Those are also spectacular, but I'm not sure if I've reached the same level of incorporating the text into my psyche that I did with the Vorkosigan books. I still think about how to convince someone to do something in terms of "raising the pressure vs lowering the wall" (Miles convincing Nikki to come out of the bathroom and go to school in Komarr). Raising the pressure on someone who already feels pressured rarely helps. Offering something that makes taking action a little easier can be much more helpful.
So cheers to Lois McMaster Bujold and the Vorkosigan Saga. Those books rewired my brain at exactly the right time and I'm still grateful.

yes he did in fact lick her 😭 their scenes together are so intimate without being explicit at the same time and it's so good

1, 12 and 19 for the book ask meme?
1. book you've reread the most times?
I think it's probably The Liar by Stephen Fry or Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I do quite a lot of re-reading!
12. did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
I did, what a nerd /o\ I loved (and still love) Lord of the Flies, and I really enjoyed both The Crucible and Hamlet.
19. most disliked popular books?
I really didn't like Wuthering Heights, and The Secret History was one of those books that should have been perfect for me on paper, but I just didn't enjoy it at all. Another one which should have worked for me but really didn't was Birdsong - having read more of his books I've had to accept that Sebastian Faulks and I simply Do Not Get Along.
thanks for the asks! <3

Bookworm asks!
Favorite science fiction book(s).
I could ramble on about this one, but I'll try to restrain myself...
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy gets an honorable mention. After an unfortunate reading assignment in 5th grade that was a bunch of dark, dystopian sci-fi short stories, I'd developed a distaste for the genre. In my last year of high school a friend set out to convince me that there is whimsy to be found in science fiction, and this was the book that did the trick
So in that light, the kind of sci-fi stories I wish I'd read in 5th grade include: Sal & Gabi Break the Universe and Fortunately the Milk (is it sci-fi or is it fanstasy or is it both? I don't care)
That takes us to the sci-fi that crosses the line into fantasy. I love this sub-genre. Often it involves people having special powers that kind of lean into fantasy. Books like Liar City. Series like the Harmony books from Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Jayne Castle. And The Extraordinaries series by TJ Klune. These are close to my heart because much of my own original fic tends to fall into this category, and seeing these works get love encourages me. (And maybe your recent White Collar wing-fic falls into this category, dear asker?)
The other sci-fi that has captured my reading heart recently has been stories about robots/clones/constructs who navigate what it means to be autonomous while still functioning as a member of a human or animal society. These include the Monk & Robot stories by Becky Chambers, the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, and The Wild Robot by Peter Brown -- I've read just the first book in that series so far. Also Defekt by Nino Cipri delighted me with characters that seemed be clones or otherwise manufactured.
Thanks so much for the fun ask!
And if anyone has other book recs that fit into these categories I love, let me know!
