Inktober 52 2023 - Week 36 - 'Childhood'

Now this will be very niche but who remembers EYT (or Electronic young Telegraph)? A childhood enjoyment of mine and I tried to recreate it here with characters I made around that age (mewn and Bonzo the dog) along with things I was interested in (naturally wolves, dragons and bats as well as Jazz jack rabbit, Bucky O hare and the Trapdoor).

When I was young the Telegraph newspaper used to come with a kids newspaper (focusing on news stories and cartoons trips aimed at kids) and later on they launched a monthly computer program which had a verity of games and edutainment features. It was actually a lot of fun with quite a bit of heart put into it. It came on floppy disk then PC CD ROM and I have an old PC I'm hoping to get running again in order to document this almost lost series as a relic of the 90's.

Mr Bonzo and Nigel Dickerson. 1990s and 2020s version. I love the fact that The Magnus Protocol has an external based on Mr Blobby; there’s always been something unsettling about him.

This was a nostalgic piece to do as I ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole looking up Noel Edmonds House Party. Re-listened to TMP episode 10 again for this, and it was set in a dungeon as opposed to a fancy house, so the hunt for House Party set references wasn’t really needed. 😅 Oh well. I hope I managed to capture the difference 30 years can make.

Big questions and takeaways I have after MAGP 12:

I ship Sam x Happiness, which is a shame because that's one ship that's definitely not going to be canon

Sam has a high EQ and is doing nothing to dissuade my impression that he's super empathetic and has few qualms about using that to manipulate and get what he wants. Example:

Alice: gets jealous and digs in about Celia Sam: deflects by bringing up her helping him with his Magnus Institute mystery*rinse and repeat*

Did Sam and Alice break up because Alice is simultaneously too possessive and also unwilling to admit/talk about it? I'm pretty firmly on the "Sam broke up with Alice and tried to do it in the gentlest 'We're better off as friends' way possible" camp and Alice is sooo not over him

Cases are definitely not randomly assigned. This was clear with Sam and The Magnus Institute case(s), but it's clearly not just a "Sam's a special boy" instance, as it does not seem like a coincidence that Gwen got the Bonzo case

*If* cases are not randomly assigned, then who is in control? Lena? Freddy? JMJ? All of the above?

Bonzo has TWO LAYERS OF TEETH his first teeth are not soft and his second teeth are not blunt

The level of coverup involved in Bonzo-related murders has got to be STAGGERING (hehe). Mr. Bonzo TORE through that stag party and the bartender but left most of them alive. He was not being discreet. It's astounding that the most the media has to say about it is "Mr. Bonzo was spotted at the scene of five murders" when he's out there merrily cavorting with his prey like a cat playing with a mouse before killing it. Not to mention whoever was involved in placing the lunchbox and CD

Gwen's post-case conversation would have been WAY different if it had been Sam rather than Alice who came across her first, but I'm not sure if it would have been because Gwen doesn't know Sam enough yet to show her vulnerable side or if it's because Sam would have taken her seriously from the start

To that previous point... Sorry y'all, Alice (intentionally) fumbled this one. Gwen tried opening up to her and it was like the moment Alice saw it happening she went "Nuh-uh absolutely not, not getting involved in whatever's got you shook up, do not want to fall down the spooky rabbit hole" and shut Gwen down with joke after joke. Gwen attempted to communicate and Alice shut her out, and I think it's unlikely Gwen tries again until things are waaaay past the point of no return (unless Sam intervenes). I interpret this as Alice knowing there is something Very Wrong and really now wanting to dig deeper/get involved, but I'm not opposed to the theory that Alice knows more than she's revealing. I am still holding out for some Sam-Gwen conspiracy buddy investigations though.

Anyway, my jaw was on the floor for most of the case... and so was Baz's.

so i just saw a reply on a tmagp post that referred to bonzo as the kool-aid man and if you aren't from the uk i need to show you the actual real children's mascot we have that bonzo is actually based on:

this horrible fucker is named mr blobby and used to appear on a saturday night variety show called noel's house on bbc one. he topped the uk single's chart during christmas of 1993 with his song, which was literally just called "mr blobby" and he also has a failed theme park attraction to his name. he's horrible and i hate him. he has a child, canonically in the blobby lore, called baby blobby, who he has with his canon wife mrs blobby. mr blobby fucks. this was going to be a fun little "btw this is who bonzo is a parody of" post but now i'm on a rabbit hole. i hate this pink motherfucker. here's the article on his failed theme park and a video of him harassing jack whitehall on big fat quiz of the 90s a few years ago.

there are so many photos where Jimmy looks totally wasted. same goes for Bonzo and there are a handful of Jonsey… but Robert, no matter his mental state, some how manages to look fucking fabulous. which is cool, but like other than maybe him getting flipped on his head, I can’t think of pics where he looks “drunk.” He looks high off his ass a lot but like idk, was he just not as into the drinking as the rest of them? I realized something, we completely forgot about Bonzo Bunny in the Poppy Playtime and Godzilla crossover

Unlike Bigger Bodies, smaller toys actually run the least chance of becoming Titans which includes Bunzo. That doesn't mean there aren't consequences to the kaiju cells. Instead of becoming monsters, small toys act similar to radars for Titans.

They can sense and identify them way faster than any advanced radar ever made. Bunzo Bunny has the highest detection range out of all the toys. He works in Monarch alongside Poppy and is very happy with his new job.

Bunzo's detection served as a major life savior in evacuation efforts should a monster approach a populated area. Some people in Monarch call him the 'Rescue Rabbit' thanks to how many tragedies he help prevented. There's a recent discussion going around about small toys being assigned to field/rescue workers in the organization as partners.

i was putting this in tags but then I got too enthusiastic.

I honestly would love to see it be about Gwen. Imagine Gwen finally getting to talk to Sam and mentioning Bonzo. Sam and Gwen go too far down the rabbit hole and it kind of takes over their lives. Alice feels left out and gets sick of Sam trying to low-key manipulate her into helping Gwen, and after many pointed barbs finally going "Why in the world do you want to help *her*?" Which causes Sam to lose it and respond with something so personal and perfectly crafted to cut Alice to ribbons and dig at that weak spot, to the point that there's no going back. You *know* Sam could stick the knife in and twist hard if he were pushed (metaphorically, I hope), and it would ruin them both.

I wonder what the final straw is going to be between alice and sam. a flippant remark or too-sharp dig from alice? another step back or half-hearted appeasement from sam? differences in beliefs, in motivations, in coping mechanisms? a monstrous entity, or a coworker?

how will they finally fall apart? what will be the final strike that drives a wedge between them that neither of them can overcome?
