Willard: I know recent events make it look like I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t blame you for wondering if I know how to take care of Ginger. But my family has been chicken farmers for generations. I know what chickens need to be happy. I just…well. I think you probably already know what happened. In a few days, I think we’ll be able to hit the nearest town and grab some supplies in a few days. I should be able to get what we need from there. And…I’m not forcing her to stay with me. If she wants to leave, she’s welcome to do so at any time. I’m not gonna make the same mistake twice. At least…I hope I won’t.  I know that nothing can make up for the way I treated her and the others in the past. I only hope that she gives me a chance to make things right for the future.

Ginger: No fences, no dogs, no threats of death if I can’t lay eggs, no keeping me trapped in the same place, no coal bin, no Mrs. Tweedy…honestly, if not for the…incident…this wouldn’t be so bad. I’ve never seen this much before in my life. Willard’s been showing me all sorts of new things. Like these bugs called “bees” that apparently drink from flowers and make this thing called honey. And he keeps talking about this town thing. I think I’ve been there once for a what humans call a “fair” and it looked a lot like a human farm to me. So, that’s something to look forward to, I guess. And Willard…without his wife here, he seems like he’s trying. He seems…I hesitate to call him “nice”, but he’s been a lot more tolerable. That’s more than I ever hoped for.

I’m pretty sure that Mrs Tweedy becomes omega awkward when she actually gets compliments. And as she hates looking embarassed, she just ignores it like nothing happened. I guess this strip happens during their first years together

willard has a hard day and fluffles curls up on the sofa next to him and they comfort each other. she likes a good scratch behind the ear just like bonzo and fido, and willard’s love for canines knows no bounds.

bonzo and fido have been his companions in the worst parts of his life, but they’re also aggressive and territorial guard dogs, not lap dogs. visiting wallace’s and sharing a quiet moment with a sweet dog like fluffles does wonders to heal willard’s mood.

i think when gromit starts to find them piled on the couch or napping in a sunbeam, it changes his perspective on willard. even after the initial strong distrust dissolves, he’s still protective of his own by default, but seeing fluffles not only enjoy but seek out the quiet company of willard helps to smooth things over.
