When you got back to Republic City you could’ve easily slunk away and buried your head in the sand but you didn’t. You went right to the council and shared with them everything you knew. 1 year later

After the battle you were pardoned by Raiko due to your help taking down Kuvira and so you didn’t serve any jail time. However you didn’t return to Zafou after the battle. Kuvira had done a lot of damage to Republic City, hundreds injured, thousands displaced and so many homes utterly destroyed. So, you decided to do something about it. 

Bolin witnessed the whole thing and saw first hand the stroke of genius ran in Kuvira’s bloodline family. You became lead of the restoration efforts and everyone soon forgot who's sister you were once your intentions became clear. The Beifong’s were a golden support system and Bolin saw even you and Opal were friends again which was nice. Opal had also told him she’d forgiven him and they were friends again but he knew that was all it would be with her. With you however that was a different story. Bolin still liked you. He knew it was stupid, most people would never consider going back to someone who did what you’d done but he couldn’t deny how he felt. Not to mention everything you’d said turned out to be true and he saw the changes you’d made to become a better person. You weren’t the same person as before and neither was he. But that didn’t make telling you any less scary. Bolin finally decided to do it one day after he spent the whole week watching you help refugees get rehabilitated. Bolin shook his head “no more the opposite, Y/n I still like you too and all this time I was unsure if I could trust you but like I just said I know I can now and so I wondered if you’d maybe like to go on a date with me?”. Your face split into an even more surprised expression and Bolin had never seen your eyes so wide before. You spluttered in shock “I’m...of course I would! Sorry i’m just lost for words because I thought I’d royally screwed this up so to hear you say this, I can’t believe how lucky I am”. Bolin blushed, in all his relationships he was usually the one providing all the security and compliments and it was nice to have someone else share that. “Well I feel pretty lucky too, none of my past partners have gone to the amount of effort you have to show me they care. You make me feel wanted and I like that”. You blushed but didn’t look away “I do want you Bolin, so not to sound eager but when are you free for that date because I’d love to take you out and make you feel even more special”. You had a good feeling about this and couldn’t wait to see what your future had in store. 

You always used to fear the future but now, with Bolin back in your life you were ready for it.

"You've made me the happiest man alive," he breathed out ,Gathering you close, he held on you tight, placing kisses atop your head as you melted into his embrace.

For a moment, the air seemed to leave Mako's lungs at your soft admission. His eyes searched your in stunned silence. Slowly, a smile began to spread across his face, eyes crinkling at the corners. "Really?" he breathed, unable to contain his Joy Though just as quickly, concern emerged. "Are you...happy about it?" You nodded, with a shy grin of your own,"Terrified but happy," you confessed. With a joyful laugh, Mako gathered you in his arms and held you close, "My love, this is incredible news," he said. Pulling back just enough to cup your face between his hands, He pressed a tender kiss to yout lips before releasing a shaky breath. "I'm here for you and our little bean every step of the way".

There you sat on the cold metal stairs leaning against its railing, the breeze playing with your hair giving it the same buoyant wave as the sea on which the ship sailed. A sense of calm enveloped you, shielding you from the usual sense of worry that plagues your mind. Your tranquility however was short lived, stolen by the sound of footsteps, you peered through the railings at the shadowy figure. It moved with stealth, making its way to the edge of the ship. You walked towards the figure trying your best to not be noticed, as you got closer, the more familiar the figure seemed. The way they walked, moved, you knew it all too well. 

You cleared your throat intending to get his attention, the figure turned to face you drawing out his swords to his side, his face concealed by a blue mask. You couldn’t help but laugh at his reaction, “Zuko” you said as you crossed arms, “you’re not going to fight me are you?”.

He sighed as he sheathed his sword, you took a step toward him, inspecting his disguise, you ran your fingers across the intricate designs on the surface of the mask he wore.

 “Where did you get this?”, you asked as you pushed the mask up revealing his face

“It was my mothers” Zuko replied, averting his eyes from yours

“Hmm I see... so, should I take the lack of eye contact as a sign of guilt?” you questioned

“Guilt?” Zuko said looking at you with confusion

“Yes Zuko, guilt. Guilt that you were probably sneaking away to do something reckless, the guilt that is very literally causing you to mask yourself.” you chided as you tapped on the mask and continued, “don’t feign stupidity Zuko, we both know you’re not fooling anyone”. 

He sighed, shoulders relaxing, “I need to get him y/n” he said

“The Avatar?”

“He is my only chance at redemption, and I can not… will not let Zhao take it away from me” he declared, “And I know what you think but I-”

“Okay”

“Okay?” he said taken aback
