Daily Instrument — Bodhrán
The Bodhran is an Irish membranophone. The bodhran is resemblant of a tambourine, it has a (traditionally wooden) circular frame with a membrane (traditionally goatskin) stretched over it. Bodhrans typically have a foot long diameter, and its frame is 3–8+ inches deep. The instrument is played 3 different ways: fluttering their hand with a tipper, playing with only one side of a tipper, and playing by hand.

More bodhrán. From this angle, you can see how the drummer is using their non-dominant hand to control the drum's pitch.

ya’ll I’m bummed out.
I’d like to know if there are any bodhrán players out there that deal with dyspraxia and/or fine motor skill issues (I am a disabled player). Any advice at all on how to grip the tipper (wether heavy or light weight seems to make no difference to my issue, I struggle with all the ones I have so far). My playing has gotten so much more fluent - but my grip is weak, even with pencils and pens. Whether fast songs or slow and gentle, I cannot maintain control of my tipper enough not to cause sloppiness that makes me skip beats. It gets to where I wanna cry lol
I’ve been practicing for 6 years (not as regularly as I should until the last 2 years) and there is just, so far, no way I can figure around my grip issue. I’m a lone player too, so it just hurts extra worse that I don’t know anyone to reach out to about these specific issues to due with my disability. I’ve used rubber bands to create a ‘stickier’ grip, even tied my fingers themselces with rubber bands to secure them to my tipper lmaooo
No success :(

Tumblr is a crucial part of my writing and research process when writing historical fiction, because several of my mutuals are deeply committed pedants and every time I see them yelling relentlessly about a book's mistakes I make notes on what not to do.
I am, however, terrified of being subjected to the Tumblr Pedants™ myself, even more so if they are my friends, and so this instills in me a terrified perfectionism, although I'm aware I will still definitely miss things. But hey, at least I'll make different mistakes. Enrichment for the pedant community.

hear me out-- ride the dragon chapter 3, the foibles of the queen of westeros, her secret wife, their two babies, and their menagerie of teenage children all trying to somehow pretend they aren't one family
oh not to tease but it's already fully plotted

the fact that i'm like this about performances / playing in public (i.e. utterly shameless) is partly why i get sooo annoyed when people treat "anxiety" as though it's always social anxiety. no i will sing a solo in a pub full of strangers and/or colleagues absolutely no problem, i'll just also have 2am panic attacks about the inevitable mortality of everyone i love until i set off my acid reflux so much i convince myself i'm having a heart attack. i have anxiety! but also put me on stage, who gives a fuck, not me

#holy shit i wanna learn more about the bodhrán now that is the coolest instrument i LOVE the sounds
That YouTuber recently posted a two-part documentary about the bodhrán on his channel (each half about half an hour). Traditional bodhráns are made with goat skin, and the second half of the documentary talks about that, so it might not be appropriate viewing for all people (but you can find it if you click through and watch the above on YouTube.
I just watched the second half the other day; it turns out that the bodhrán became wildly popular in Ireland after it was used in the sound design in the tragic play, Sive, by John B. Keane, in 1959, which coincided with the Folk Revival period in music.
youtube
Recently, VoicePlay did a ridiculously theatrical rendition of "Drunken Sailor,"* where their vocal percussionist, Layne Stein, did a moderately impressive reproduction of the sound of the bodhrán (pronounced like "Baron," kinda-sorta).
And that got me a) hungry for the sound of the real thing, and b) wondering how most vocal percussionists (in a cappella bands, at least, not beatboxers who are making careers as solo artists) focus on making the sounds associated with the drum kits used in rock and jazz, and not other drum colors from other cultures.
BTW, as far as folk anthropologists can tell, the bodhrán is not an "ancient Pagan Ritual Instrument, sacred to the druids," but a repurposed household serving tray you'd give to the kids to bang on when they wanted to go out mumming around Christmastime. And it's gained cultural importance among the Irish diaspora, especially in the last hundred years.
Anyway, have a little sample of some fun drumming.
*Since it's a song in the Public Domain, and there's no one composer, or known original performer, I don't think calling it a "cover" is accurate. The song belongs as much to Geoff Castellucci and the others in the band as it does to any of the other 8 billion humans on Earth. That's what folk music is all about.
