'Wool waulking is a traditional Scottish process of finishing and strengthening newly woven woolen fabrics. It is a significant social and cultural activity, often carried out by women in the Highlands of Scotland. The Gaelic songs that are sung during waulking have a distinctive rhythmic pattern that aids in synchronising the work.'

The aromantics (rightfully) complaining about the overstateration of modern love songs should check out Celtic folk. Every song I thought was about love was actually about the Jacobite rebellion

Today’s compilation:
The World of BBC TV Themes 1989 Easy Listening / Pop / Modern Classical / New Age / Celtic Folk
The common throughline among most of this slate of 80s themes from BBC TV shows is that they're easy listening tunes. But 80s easy listening can come in multiple forms, and basically what we have here are easy listening songs that are of a modern classical type and easy listening songs that are primarily made with a bunch of keyboard presets.
Now, I'm definitely more partial to that keyboard stuff. I really dig a lot of those synthwave and vaporwave songs that revive those 80s and early 90s keyboard sounds. But there's certainly a line between what ultimately makes a good 80s keyboard song and a bad one, because *a lot,* if not most of it, does tend to feel really cheesy, empty, and dated. Not everyone out there was making the Twin Peaks theme or Jan Hammer's "Crockett's Theme" for Miami Vice back then, y'know. A lot of it's actually turned out to be just lame, disposable crap.
But there's one song on here that has that good, synthy heft to it, and unsurprisingly, it's by the queen of new age music herself, Enya. Apparently there was a 1987 docuseries about the history and growth of Celtic culture throughout Europe called The Celts, and its self-titled song was used as the opening theme for it. It has this sweet, nostalgia-inducing, whimsical lead melody to it and the song could probably also serve well as the theme to some mid-90s medieval RPG too.
The rest of this, though, wasn't very good. And this title, The World of BBC TV Themes, with its cool cover that has pieces of a globe emerging out of a TV on it, could probably lead you to believe that this album might have some world music quality to it. And within the first five or so songs, that appears to be the case, but the BBC seems to run out of that kind of material pretty quickly. So, a little bit of deception there, I guess.
I've also never heard any of these songs before in my life, or seen these TV shows from which they're derived. But if you grew up with these programs, I imagine your glasses would be a lot more rose-tinted than mine for these songs. I'm just evaluating the music itself here, but others might get some sentimental value out of it, which is something I'm not equipped for.
