It's not everyday you see your name next to @kurtelling and #branfordmarsalis on a website. Just a few blocks from my house, I get to share the stage today with the amazing @todd.burge #bobthompson and @ericgnezda for a national public television show, then worship and study at the feet of two masters from the front row of the theatre. Who knew when I moved to this little town 10 years ago that any of this would be possible? Thank you @peoplesbanktheatre for making this wonderful stuff happen.

We acquired the Bob Thompson papers between 2006 and 2012. These papers richly detail the painter’s dynamic life and career. 

From New York to Paris, London to Ibiza, Thompson and his wife, Carol, were prominent figures in local artistic communities. A scrapbook features photos of the Thompsons and their friends at parties and studios. The scrapbook is currently on view in our exhibition Expanding the Legacy: New Collections on African American Art in our Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery in Washington, DC.

Maceo Mitchell (b. 1942) Persimmon on Yellow, 1999 Pastel on Paper 3 ½ x 3 ¼ in. Maceo Mitchell was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1942. He obtained a BA of Fine Arts from Wayne University in 1966 and received a Master of Arts in Printmaking from the University of Iowa in 1969. He went on to teach at Macomb Community College in 1976, then at various institutions until 1990. He thenbecame an Artist-in-Residence at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a position he held until 2001. During this time he moved through a series of different mediums, from pencil, to watercolor, to pastel, and then eventually to oil paint, as his interest in color and design as primary elements in his work became more pronounced. The painting shown here is among his best still life works. His careful approach to the detailed description of each different shade and the sharp outlines informs the viewer of the artist’s measured examination of the object. Bob Thompson (1937 – 1966) Untitled (Seated Yellow Figure) Oil on Canvas Board 14 x 10 in. Bob Thompson was born in Louisville, Kentucky and went to the University of Louisville, where he studied under German expressionist painter, UlfertWilke. In 1958 he moved to New York City and, after receiving a Whitney Foundation Fellowship in 1961, he married then moved to Europe, seeking inspiration from the European Old Masters. During these years hedeveloped an addiction to heroin and, in the end, lost the battle, concluding an eight-year career as a painter. Despite Thompson’s relatively short career in art, he produced approximately 1,000 works. Successfully conveying emotion through abstract figures, without having undergone extensive training. The color and figure evoke Goya’s paintings but are also synthesized with his Jazz influences.
