Bob Thompson (1937 – 1966) Untitled (Seated Yellow Figure) Oil on Canvas Board 14 x 10 in. Bob Thompson was born in Louisville, Kentucky and went to the University of Louisville, where he studied under German expressionist painter, UlfertWilke. In 1958 he moved to New York City and, after receiving a Whitney Foundation Fellowship in 1961, he married then moved to Europe, seeking inspiration from the European Old Masters. During these years hedeveloped an addiction to heroin and, in the end, lost the battle, concluding an eight-year career as a painter. Despite Thompson’s relatively short career in art, he produced approximately 1,000 works. Successfully conveying emotion through abstract figures, without having undergone extensive training. The color and figure evoke Goya’s paintings but are also synthesized with his Jazz influences.
