Multitudes, Norman Lewis, 1946, Art Institute of Chicago: American Art
Among avant-garde painters in New York in the 1940s, Norman Lewis took a unique stance toward the possibility of addressing social concerns through abstraction. The only black artist active in the New York School, he pushed the limits of non-representational art by incorporating forms evocative of the energy of American cities. In Multitudes, Lewis brought together aspects of Abstract Expressionism’s two dominant languages—gestural mark making and Color Field painting—by layering tight and rapid calligraphy atop a soft ground of pulsating color. Although the work avoids overt representation, the title alludes to the United States’ struggles and potential after World War II. With reference to lines from Walt Whitman’s 1892 poem “Song of Myself,” Lewis commented on his own time and the productive complications his socially engaged abstraction brought to American painting at this moment: “Do I contradict myself? / Very well then I contradict myself, / (I am large, I contain multitudes.).” Kate S. Bill Hodges Gallery is pleased to present three booths in this year’s Hamptons Virtual Art Fair, September 2 to September 7. Our largest booth is previewed here and is titled, “African American Artists. It features 22 works by important African American artists including Sam Gilliam, Mickalene Thomas, Adam Pendleton and Lorna Simpson. To be in the presence of the King 
is to eternally see
Revelation is the illumination
every cornea dreams
every iris receives
every pupil needs…truth Corny as it may seem
the cornea feeds on Light 
chews on it with optic nerve ivories
then digests it in the intellectual belly that births dreams To be without Light is to not eat
and without Light no one can see
So, here we are hungry and blind and confused in identity
Standing in line to get fitted for glasses
as if the cure is in the good we heap
See, they don’t wear glasses in heaven…

20/20 world vision is inferior
to divine revelation for eternity step into Light
