“I feel it is my moral obligation as a black artist to try to graphically document what I feel socially,” David Hammons said in 1969, one year before he made this haunting double self-portrait which appears in 'Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power,' copublished by D.A.P. and @tate as well as on the cover of 'The Soul of a Nation Reader,' published by @gregoryrmiller Titled “Black First, America Second” (1970), this body print and silkscreen on paper presents one version of the self that “clings to the stars of the national flag,” according to 'Soul of a Nation' originating curators Mark Godfrey and Zoé Whitley, “while the other self appears almost painfully cleaved by its stripes… [It] is an image both timely and resolutely of its time.” #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #davidhammons #blackfirstamericasecond @vampirefriendly @markgodfrey1973 #soulofanationreader #soulofanation @zoe.whitley #blackpower #blackart https://www.instagram.com/p/Co2sldMpjqJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

in, “squabble up,” kendrick acknowledges objects and events (turned visual culture) significant to compton and south central los angeles at large. in the second image, artist, lauren halsey places the original image which kendrick references, against a collaged wall. additionally, we see reference to david hammons 1990 “african american flag.”

In this Harlem barbershop performance, #DavidHammons created his Rock Head series of sculpture. Hammons glued hair swept from a Harlem barbershop floor to boulders found in Harlem - which were then given a haircut by the same barber. Photocopy print of the artist's artwork. Private New York collection; acquired directly from the artist. / via @swanngalleries https://www.instagram.com/p/CeRywY4Nwrr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

@abstractexit ✊🏾 Independence Day wasn’t freedom for all peoples in Amerikkka. The struggle life depicted in the colors black and blue means more to me than the red and white stripes. Black bodies against the beautifully sculpted blue skies. Blue as in the tunes that tell our stories through the Blues that simultaneously brings us joy as we release the pain that in other case can never be tolerated. X’s that mark the places we shun light amidst the dark black places - and atrocities to be remembered and give birth to lyrics such as “Black and Blue” - the trumpet squeals against the raspy vocals of Louis Armstrong’s paving way to the new Blues as artists lyricize “Hip Hop, you da love of my life...” with beats throbbin’ into the new millennium as we’ve all left mother Africa in our past, with thoughts of Fela Kuti, water, for sure, no get enemy. Yet we still strugglin’ to overcome adversity against this black skin. Culturally desired yet still despised in our melanin. Sure, we still got the Blues - the Afro blues, the Africa blues, the color blue that reflects the heavens on our beautiful dark black surfaces. . . . Art piece details: “Tearz (Wu-Tang)” 2019, spray paint, mylar, iridescent film, vinyl, 36”x48” #Tarikushiferaw inspired by #davidhammons “African American Flag” #SupportBlackArt #Amerikkka #WeAintDoneYet https://www.instagram.com/p/CCPT834hFNQ/?igshid=oii8e3qm4g60
