Ha, nice. #boycottwalmart is trending on Twitter because they’re pulling signs promoting violent video games, but still selling guns.

I was at Walmart last week, getting a last-minute fishing license for my nephew. While waiting around the sporting goods section as all the information was entered into the computer, I couldn’t help but stare at the guns, which were in vertical display cases on either side of the counter. Most of them were around two hundred to four hundred dollars, with a couple cheaper ones... including one that was a pale fuchsia color, for some reason.

In Florida, there aren’t any requirements for normal citizens to buy firearms, aside from being at least twenty-one years old. So long as you’re of age and can pass a background check (which basically anyone who’s a legal citizen and not a felon can pass), you can go in, sign up for the background check, and a couple days later return and buy your guns. There’s apparently no limit on the number of guns you can buy at once, which is... kind of a scary prospect.

Even if you aren’t of age or can’t pass the background check, the security in that particular Walmart is pretty lax. Just fifteen feet from the sporting goods counter is the automotive counter, set back in its own little alcove and with doors leading to the outside. It’s pretty easy to imagine someone driving right up to the automotive department doors, smashing the rifle display cases, and making a getaway in around a minute.

This probably wouldn’t ever happen, since stealing a gun from a pawn shop would be significantly safer... but even that isn’t a very likely scenario, even if someone wants a gun in order to commit a crime. Why? Because in Florida, there’s no legal requirement to register your ownership of a firearm, be it a rifle or a handgun. There are obviously records of the serial numbers of all guns sold and who bought them, but since registration isn’t required, you’re free to resell the gun... and people do. At my favorite flea market, there are occasionally guys with “gun show” tables set up, where they just sell firearms to whoever they want, no background check necessary.

I’m rambling about things unrelated to Walmart at this point, but I wanted to share what the situation is like where I live. The idea that Walmart will pull promotional signs for a violent video game in response to a shooting while still selling actual guns in the same store (about 120 feet away, in my local store) is pretty ridiculous, to the point of sounding like satire.

Instead of holding Wal-Mart only accountable for taking violent video games - rather than guns - off their shelves, how about we hold them accountable for not paying their employees a living wage, too? 

Since so many Walmart employees are on food stamps, Walmart cashes in on welfare program cash and keeps wages low.

So, not only are they pocketing cash that should go to living expenses for employees, but Walmart is also pocketing food stamp cash. They’re getting rewarded for the suffering of their employees.

Walmart Apologizes for Tweet Calling Sen. Hawley Sore Loser

Walmart apologized Wednesday for a tweet that called Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley a sore loser for contesting President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.

The now deleted tweet, “Go ahead. Get your 2 hour debate. #soreloser," was mistakenly sent by a member of Walmart's social media team who meant to publish it on their personal account, the company said.

The hashtag #BoycottWalmart began to trend on Twitter shortly after it appeared on the company’s official Twitter account.

The tweet was a response to Hawley's announcement that he plans to raise objections next week when Congress meets to affirm Biden’s victory. The objections won’t alter the election results, but it could delay the certification of Biden’s win.

“We have removed the post and have no intention of commenting on the subject of certifying the electoral college," Walmart said in a prepared statement. “We apologize to Senator Hawley for this error and any confusion about our position.”
