I do not think the healing church in itself was a highly patriarchal institution or whatever (i just do not think that if it was. Most of its high ranking members we know of wouldve been women) but i do think it did somewhat trace a line between the types of women. Aside from the obvious class thing (there are the healing church members and the low ignorant masses), they did definitively did distinguish between those who were worthy to access to the secret knowledge (the clergy and choir members) and those who weren't and whose most important job would have been to be a lab rat and receptacle (blood saints)

there’s something so harrowing about the jar innards being mob enemies.

in most of Fromsoft games there is always that one all-female group that was either maimed or killed for a greater purpose, but Elden Ring shrine maiden is the first time they are connected to an existing, NAMED character we know AND we are aware of the full process of their suffering AND we still literally have to perpetuate it just to get through a game level.

Fire Keepers are mostly NPCs, they could be harmed but it’s not required. That one ending in DS3 where you literally not only kill her but step on her head to get what you want? I never do that ending. It already makes me feel awful.

The Blood Saints (Adella, Adeline, even Arianna & Iosefka), same thing. They could be fought, but you could also leave them alone, and they are still NPCs more than active hostile enemies. The Ookami warriors… let’s be real how many players actually know they are human girls being sacrificed and eaten by the Mist Nobles to perpetuate their cycle of immortality? It’s a subtle form of horror that would fly over most players’ head if they are not paying attention.

But the shrine maidens? Just the fact that they were connected to the most important character in the game makes them stand out from others before them. Yet they are not NPCs. We can’t talk to any of them. They are actively hostile enemies we can’t even reliably run past. I don’t even feel this horrible fighting pregnant Yharnam.

Idk, if I go into another play through I think i’ll just skip the DLC gaols entirely. Especially the Lamenter one. They scream and cry in it my god.

Adeline was totally the daughter of a light house keeper in the fishing hamlet and spent her free time as a child exploring ship wrecks and tide pools.

One of my main takes on adeline is still that she is more in control of whats happening to her than the context would make you think. I hate all portrayals of her as naive (dont get me started on that) i think that she very much is being manipulated by the church in many ways but all her decisions were her own. She lacks agency but she is still in control of her fate somewhat. I think the research hall experimented on many that were not consenting/did not know what was being done to them, but i don't think she was one of them. Not necessarily because shes a blood saint, if anything i think that did not matter that much wrt who was chosen for the experiments, but just because she made that choice of her own will. Now the arguing point is more of a philosophical one i guess aka how much of it is her own choice if part of why she decided to do it was because the church instilled into her the idea that she is worth nothing as a human being. So she has been biased but her hand was not forced exactly. I'm always saying it but my favorite thing about her is how clearly stubborn she is and i think that plays into it. But back to what i was saying, i think she has a relatively clear idea of everything around her and i dont think she is blind to the church's practices. She has utmost faith in them but i don't think shes unaware of what they do. I think she has some kind of like... knowledge that is beyond what youd assume her to have, it's mostly just A Take, the only way in which i see this reflected in her dialogues is the fact she knows exactly what she needs to ascend and that gives her that feeling of like... Knowing more than what would seem normal for someone in her position, i think especially in the nightmare with ascension nearing she is getting a sense of what precise steps she needs to take to get where she wants to be. I don't know if what I'm typing makes any sense it's really late. I think in the nightmare she has access to inherent knowledge about the mechanics of this world that she doesnt necessarily Understand, she just Knows. It's something she would not be able to explain but she feels.

"Bloodborne is primarily about violence towards women" no it isn't, there are just toxic pseudofeminists bending any piece of media to their purposes so they can feel like they are insulting other fans from moral high-ground and are contributing something valid. Bloodborne is "primarily" about hubris of mankind and messing with the things not meant for humans, a question whether evolving the foolish and cruel humanity is even worth it if to do so you have to do even more foolish and cruel things and also lose this humanity altogether. Blood Saints weren't "groomed", it is a localization liberty and in the original it says they received special treatment (medical procedure), they very well could be volunteers. Adeline is fascinated with the sea horrors no less than Micolash himself, do you want to deny her the madwoman agency? Rom being just an innocent victim of male (Willem) experiments is just a popular headcanon, again, madwoman agency. Gascoigne might not have killed Viola, and if he did that had fuckshit to do with her being his wife specifically.
