Adeline was totally the daughter of a light house keeper in the fishing hamlet and spent her free time as a child exploring ship wrecks and tide pools.
also the fishing hamlet used to have bioluminescent algae befor the population killed or drove them out

I still think Willem was the pope (well, Bloodborne equivalent of such) in early Healing Church times with Laurence as the second highest rank, and Laurence's betrayal was more leaving to continue blood antics and funding of doomed research of madmen scientists when Willem saw it was a mess and distanced like problems of n00bs aren't his business.
But my point is? I know 🅱️loodborne doesn't quite copy reality, but like.. an average catholic pope has the super long super elaborate robes with for ceremonial purposes, and within the place they typically wear something simpler and monotone? So now I am thinking not only middle figure of Surgery Altar depicts Willem (when he still had a beard), but also the simpler robe on that figure WAS his normal outfit! And the absurdly elaborate robe we find him wearing in the game used to be his ceremonial - until he became too much of a slug (nearly literally...) to budge and change. I am picturing that during official events there would be at least two lower rank people to carry the absurdly long blue tails of his clothes to not let them be dragged over the floor, as well.
(I naturally assume Laurence never had the heart to replace Willem so that sort of status was gone.. but imagining him and Emilia to have two sets with different amount of elaboration and formality is kinda fun)

there’s something so harrowing about the jar innards being mob enemies.
in most of Fromsoft games there is always that one all-female group that was either maimed or killed for a greater purpose, but Elden Ring shrine maiden is the first time they are connected to an existing, NAMED character we know AND we are aware of the full process of their suffering AND we still literally have to perpetuate it just to get through a game level.
Fire Keepers are mostly NPCs, they could be harmed but it’s not required. That one ending in DS3 where you literally not only kill her but step on her head to get what you want? I never do that ending. It already makes me feel awful.
The Blood Saints (Adella, Adeline, even Arianna & Iosefka), same thing. They could be fought, but you could also leave them alone, and they are still NPCs more than active hostile enemies. The Ookami warriors… let’s be real how many players actually know they are human girls being sacrificed and eaten by the Mist Nobles to perpetuate their cycle of immortality? It’s a subtle form of horror that would fly over most players’ head if they are not paying attention.
But the shrine maidens? Just the fact that they were connected to the most important character in the game makes them stand out from others before them. Yet they are not NPCs. We can’t talk to any of them. They are actively hostile enemies we can’t even reliably run past. I don’t even feel this horrible fighting pregnant Yharnam.
Idk, if I go into another play through I think i’ll just skip the DLC gaols entirely. Especially the Lamenter one. They scream and cry in it my god.

One of my main takes on adeline is still that she is more in control of whats happening to her than the context would make you think. I hate all portrayals of her as naive (dont get me started on that) i think that she very much is being manipulated by the church in many ways but all her decisions were her own. She lacks agency but she is still in control of her fate somewhat. I think the research hall experimented on many that were not consenting/did not know what was being done to them, but i don't think she was one of them. Not necessarily because shes a blood saint, if anything i think that did not matter that much wrt who was chosen for the experiments, but just because she made that choice of her own will. Now the arguing point is more of a philosophical one i guess aka how much of it is her own choice if part of why she decided to do it was because the church instilled into her the idea that she is worth nothing as a human being. So she has been biased but her hand was not forced exactly. I'm always saying it but my favorite thing about her is how clearly stubborn she is and i think that plays into it. But back to what i was saying, i think she has a relatively clear idea of everything around her and i dont think she is blind to the church's practices. She has utmost faith in them but i don't think shes unaware of what they do. I think she has some kind of like... knowledge that is beyond what youd assume her to have, it's mostly just A Take, the only way in which i see this reflected in her dialogues is the fact she knows exactly what she needs to ascend and that gives her that feeling of like... Knowing more than what would seem normal for someone in her position, i think especially in the nightmare with ascension nearing she is getting a sense of what precise steps she needs to take to get where she wants to be. I don't know if what I'm typing makes any sense it's really late. I think in the nightmare she has access to inherent knowledge about the mechanics of this world that she doesnt necessarily Understand, she just Knows. It's something she would not be able to explain but she feels.

I headcanon that Lady Maria and Laurence have an animosity that goes beyond the typical rivalry that is common between academics with competing theories on the same subject and part of it is cause Maria was one of the earliest and most vocal opponents (or as vocal as Maria would ever be) of use of the Old Blood. Unlike Master Willem's cautioning she straight up tells him the Old Blood is shit and will bring bad consequences (totally drawing from Cainhurst experience here).
She further emphasizes this point by largely refusing to use the Blood to heal in Hunts, largely relying on her skills and is why she's a Master at the Art of Quickening. And lowkey, it's also why her HP is so low compared to other DLC enemies. She had to whether a lot of hits that normally Hunters would heal with the Old Blood and eventually it did have a long-lasting toll on her body. After one pretty bad fight Laurence had walked up to her with a bottle being like "oh wow Maria that's a pretty bad gash you've got there :))))) A shame there's no way to heal that quickly :))))" and was even more annoyed when she refused him even then. Needless to say having a major academic and Hunter snub your work like that, is well a pretty nasty thorn to have on your side.
That is to say, that I don't think Maria was against blood ministration (heck, it's the main thing in Bloodborne). I do think she would be very picky as to where it's sourced from. One of them being from Adeline, and Maria only took it (after much refusal and protest to Adeline being a Blood Saint in the first place) was in a different and worse fight than the aforementioned, it was practically forced onto her by a sobbing Adeline who thought she was going to lose Maria then and there. From then on Maria carried a blood vial of Adeline's blood (at first Adeline would sneak them in, later as the beasts became more dangerous Maria took them willingly) with her on the Hunts.
I also headcanon, with no evidence, that Adeline was Laurence's sister. Surprisingly, this was not a direct point of contention in these colleagues' relationship, but it did cause Laurence to grind his teeth when anyone reminded him of this, or when he'd come home and see Adeline sitting on Maria's lap in their parlor. Laurence, being the first Vicar, was a huge source of Adeline's feelings of inadequency, though she'd never tell him that. She felt she had to measure up in some way, and when she didn't, she felt like nothing. It also compelled her to be a blood Saint, something Maria was strongly against. It was Adeline's insistence that led to Laurence and the Church to ultimately fund Maria's research at the Research Hall, and part of it cause it would distract away from Maria (potentially) being a vocal opponent of the Church and the Hunt.

Perhaps spare a little adeline if youve got the inspiration..? :) Your art is always such a delight for real i will always be a huge fan
I can spare an Adeline ...TWO Adelines, even (also thank you so much!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've never actually drawn her, but here's the closest to her I can get in my head. Adeline is a Blood Saint, who's already started the process of ascension into a bio-radio to hear gods when she meets Maria. She's content being a blood saint but knows it's sort of its own futile self-martyrdom.
Completely blind, she's never without an IV stand or a Maria to lean on. Blindness does not remove her abilities to do tasks, however. She's still a quick draw at setting up and administering and tending to books and records. A great blistering in her brain as a god's echo stretches it apart, the wound always weeps and is always wrapped up and tended to. She's used to it and doesn't really register the pain anymore.
Adeline has never seen Maria but knows how she looks and knows every frown and smirk and placid smile. Quiet but not timid, just waits for a chance to speak and have the thoughts to back up her words. Adeline never really was a fan of gardening but keeps everything Maria leaves her before a hunt.
