Also i just wanted to add a little detail even if you already pointed out most of it!

Yeah she looks human and stuff bc she died at one. But the Maria we see as a boss fight is not really « Lady Maria » it’s a NIGHTMARE version of herself! (I never hear the take how that mean she was better than the others??? Like she just didn’t die as a beast)

We don’t get many details and how she passed away and stuff but we know for sure that from her living she:

- throw away her Rakuyo

- stop being a hunter and hunting beasts

- she wasn’t found of bloodblade like the chikage

And what do we have in her boss fight in the dlc?!

- she have her rakuyo back, wearing hunter attire (like pointed out with the different items of her past as a hunter)

- SHE USED FREAKING BLOOD BLADE AND BLOOD PYROMANCY to try to beat us!!

It’s a nightmarish version of her former self, she become beverything she used to hate about herself.

People have already pointed out that Maria out of all of the major dlc bosses that aren't the orphan is the only one who keeps a human form but also like. I do not really think its to highlight her moral superiprity or whatever. The thing about Kos' punishments are that they both mirror the sinner's fates in the real world but also strike psychologically. Laurence, who was a scholar first and foremost, is forced to never remember himself, even after going in contact with his skull, Ludwig, who was characterized by his love of honor (validity of that honor after serving for years as the head of the violent police of a repressive theocracy is to be discussed by fans) is reduced to a mindless monster that crushes everything that crosses his way. Maria doesn't change physically, as she likely died before literally everyone in Yharnam became a blood junkie, BUT she is in her hunter clothes. She still has her discarded rakuyo. She is the perfect image of herself the day she invaded the Fishing Hamlet and slaughtered and experimented upon its residents. Every day, for god knows how many years that have passed since her death in the real world and her death in the nightmare, she has been reminded of what she had done, of what she kept doing with the Research Hall. In some ways, her punishment is worse than Laurence's and Ludwig. Sure. They are humiliating for them, but they aren't exactly fully aware of what was going on. Maria, who remained sane? She was aware of that, for every moment of her (un)life, until we put her down a second time
