re: jc protecting wwx, I think the order of things is very pointed there. One day jc loved wwx enough to beg his mother not to whip him and distract the Wens, but the consequences were so bad (understandable but not excusable) he blinbly joined the cycle of violence - this time not only as a passive onlooker like in the xuanwu cave but as the enforcer, a.k.a. whipping/restraining wwx himself and leading the siege onto his shixiong. I just pity wwx, who suffered twice over...

Yeah, there’s definitely an element of that. I think JC and WWX come very close to being direct opposites in regards to how they face the fact that Their Actions Have Consequences; WWX suffers terribly because he tries to do good! He quite literally loses everything! And he still is entirely convinced that it was worth it. To him the consequences mean nothing in the face of the fact that someone lived who would have died if he hadn’t stepped in. Yeah, he lost everything, but hey, Sizhui and WN are alive (...sort of) and happy; that makes it all worthwhile to him. Meanwhile JC did one good thing and suffered for it, and even though the biggest consequence to his actions was undone within like. a week, he decides that doing good is not worth it. Better that everyone around him suffers than he does. WWX believes that it doesn’t matter what happens to him if even one person’s situation improves because of his actions; JC would let everyone who loves and trusts him die before he chose to face the consequences of helping them (and in fact he kind of does; while JYL’s death wasn’t his fault it still wouldn’t have happened if he’d done the right thing from the start, and of course everything that happened to WWX was heavily influenced by JC pretty much throwing him under the bus so that he wouldn’t have to argue with JGS). And of course in the end the story rewards them in the way their actions deserve. WWX, who wanted to do good and helped everyone he could, finds that that kindness has won him lifelong friends and a family who loves him. JC, who embraced the immediate rewards that cruelty gave him and threw aside anyone who might bring any trouble to him, finds himself alone and bitter because no one loves, likes, or trusts the man whose reputation is one of boundless cruelty and who betrayed his only brother for short-term gain (and that version of events will almost certainly start making the rounds post-canon, as WWX’s reputation rises and JC’s presumably continues to sink now that all evidence suggests that he’s actively interfering in the running of Lanling; helping his nephew or no, the sects will not take kindly to that, especially the ones who were hoping to benefit from Lanling having a weak and inexperienced leader!).
