I have finished Vanitas! I'm very proud of how this turned out, especially for it being so long since I gave watercolors a serious go. Copic Bleedproof White is amazing for touching up areas and going over again, I highly recommend it. This is a mixed media piece, I used glitter gel pen on the frame details so they sparkle under light, as well as added some shimmer/interference watercolors in some other areas such as his jewelry, hair, tie, and the butterflies. The pink one shimmers pink on one angle and blue on another.

Some good old fashioned multimedia! Watercolor, a bit of acrylic and bleedproof white, and markers for the lineart.
I'm amazed--I haven't done watercolor in at least a year, and somehow it still turned out good??

Been following you for while and after seeing a couple of your WIP it made me wonder... What exactly ia your process? And the step by step strategy you follow every time you draw.
And if you use any kind of reference, if you don't mind me asking of course
Ooh fun.
So to start, I still consider myself in a big learning phase. I stopped drawing for a decade and have spent the last 4 years relearning a lot. I only started water color coming up on 2 years ago. So take anything I say with a big grain of salt.
One big thing I've been working on is the process, having drafts, etc.
Using a recent painting I can illustrate my ideal method for illustrations (my landscapes skip numbers 4 and 5).
1) research, I use Pinterest a lot, as well as stock photos and posing apps. References are super important to me and I rarely start drawing without them.
2) thumbnails, this is relatively new but things turn out so much better when I do I rough sketch or two (or more)
3) sketch layer in blue pencil
4) round two in purple pencil (below is half way done with step 4) so you can see the two colors
5) round three in light brown ink
6) watercolor painting
(the yellow is masking fluid) that was removed later)
7) second ink layer, and highlights
For supplies I like (I'm not rich, and feel I can say most of this can be acquired on a modest budget, especially over timing and taking advantage of sales)
🌼Pilot Color Eno mechanical pencils in light blue and purple
🌼Factis Black erasers
🌼Stilman and Birn Beta sketchbooks, Baohong paper and in a pinch masters touch paper from Hobby Lobby when I need something super affordable
🌼Windsor Newton professional or Daniel Smith watercolors, pricey but last a long time. (Buy them on sale a few at a time, I have 5 ml tubes and haven't replaced one yet in almost two years). You don't need a lot, I started with about a dozen and that was plenty to start with.
🌼Washi Tape
🌼Princeton Velvet Touch Brushes (rounds in size 2, 4, 6, 8 and a large brush for washes is a great start, you need tons of specialty brushes)
🌼Dr. Martin's Bleedproof White
🌼Sakura Micron Pens (I main use brown, light brown and black in 005 and 01 size)
I don't believe in hoarding art knowledge so please ask any questions. If you're just starting I advise getting at least quality student grade materials, reddit and other sites are great for finding affordable supply recommendations.
If you're interested in watercolor there are a lot of great tutorials out there, I started with a free landscape class from thewritingdesk on Instagram!

I got a new marker sketchbook, the new ohuhu bleedproof one (do recommend) and in every drawing I made in it so far, I tested a marker technique that was new to me. This one, a flat layer of colour with the lighting and shading colours on top of it. Quite roughly. I really like it. It fits the subject. I started this because I wanted to draw this character’s scars in detail, I hadn’t done so in a long time. The roughness of the colouring fits the rough, aged, scarred look of the character.
I’ve never really known how to draw the scar on his neck, because it’s a scar that isn’t supposed to be able to exist in the real world, so I don’t have a clear reference. I always imagined it as like a burn scar, but I find those difficult to draw.

Painting With Pixels vs Paper: Your Color Art Tip Of The Day
I’ve chosen the word “paper”. One best practice tip for coloring on paper is to ensure you’re using the right kind of paper for your medium. If you’re using colored pencils, a heavier, coarser paper is ideal as it can hold the pigment better and allow for easier blending. However, if you’re using markers, a smooth, bleedproof paper is the way to go. It’s also important to remember to start…

Colourbox
You will need:
paper
colouring media - pencils, pens, inks, watercolours, etc.
access to a list of colour names (art supply site, Freetone, a palette maker tool, etc. just for some inspiration)
Do:
Create a grid with a square for each letter of your first name, or your whole name, if you're inclined.
Choose a colouring media of whatever type you like, and for each square in your grid, colour it with a colour that starts with the same letter as that letter of your name. For example: Lemon, Orange, Naples Yellow, Indanthrone Blue, Tangerine, Alizarin Crimson.
Notes:
If you're going to use watercolour paints as your colouring media, make sure you use watercolour paper as your substrate. Make sure to use bleedproof or marker paper for markers.
You don't have to arrange your squares in a square grid, you can do whatever shape you like, or no shape at all.
Do this any size you like. A large one would make for an interesting bit of wall decor. Might make for a nice gift too.
You could also use this as a way to decorate a journal or scrapbook cover.
Don't put the letters in the box, just colour the boxes.

Today’s #sktchy face: Mahan #drawingfaces #copicmarkers #sketchbooktesting
I taught a class on using alcohol markers yesterday and pulled out a Derwent Graphik bleedproof sketchbook I’ve had on my shelf for years during the class to test some markers on. The paper seemed to work better than a lot of the other paper samples I had available in terms of not leaving any stripes when filling large spaces. Students were curious so I promised to test it further with a…
