Thoughts on Sirius x Kingsley, if you haven't done them already?

thank you very much for the ask, anon!

i love a bit of blackbolt, and i'm delighted that it seems to be building momentum [as much as a rare pair ever does...] as a pairing in this fandom.

above all, i really like how kingsley's slight periphery to sirius' grief [we can assume he's a similar age to the marauders, because he mentions to lupin that harry looks like james, but he certainly wasn't their friend at school, nor does he seem to have been in the order during the first war] gives him an ability to give sirius some respite from the self-destructive spiral he finds himself in during order of the phoenix. i always really like him giving arthur the copy of the quibbler which claims sirius is stubby boardman, especially because he does it because he thinks sirius will find it funny, and i can also see him telling sirius all the ridiculous ways he's misleading the manhunt for him in an effort to make him smile.

kingsley is also shown to be someone who respects sirius' relationship with harry - and who is slightly skeptical [even if this doesn't result in him actually doing anything to undermine it] of dumbledore’s treatment of harry during his fifth year - which sirius would obviously value.

plus, they’re both hot. always a bonus.

Loving and writing rare pair fics is a struggle because I think that I'm writing just hoping there's someone out there who would like to read about this pair.

saturday ficlet

Dinner had gone well.

Too well.

Kingsley had done everything right--he’d used the proper cutlery for every course of the ten-course meal, he’d kept the conversation flowing smoothly, he’d even held out Sirius’s chair for him when they first sat down.

Harry doesn’t trust it. 

So when Cedric gets up to help Sirius with the dishes, Harry leans over and says, “Minister, I’d like a word.” 

Kingsley simply inclines his head, his expression betraying nothing. “Of course, Mr. Potter-Black.��� 

Harry leads them into the library. He motions for Kingsley to have a seat in an armchair in front of the fire, but then he remains standing. He clasps his hands behind his back.

“What,” he says, “is Sirius’s favorite color?”

Kingsley blinks at him, and then says, “Red.” 

Correct answer, but Kingsley had hesitated for a second. Harry decides to count that against him. “His favorite Quidditch team?”

“He’ll tell you Puddlemere United, but it’s actually the Montrose Magpies.” 

Damn. Kingsley had said that without missing a beat. 

“What makes Sirius happy?”

“His motorbike. Remus, Gideon, and the baby. His brother, whether or not he likes to admit it. Muggle rock bands.” Kingsley’s expression softens. “But what makes him happiest is being your dad.” 

He’s too smooth. It’s time for Harry to pull out the big guns.

“I have your resume,” he says, pulling a thick sheaf of parchment from his pocket and unfolding it. Kingsley finally looks somewhat surprised.

“How did you get that?”

“Uncle Regulus stole it from your office,” Harry says. It was his price for keeping silent about the fact that he’d stumbled upon Uncle Regulus in a cupboard with Bill Weasley at Sirius’s annual solstice party two weeks ago. “Very impressive resume, Minister.”

“Thank you,” Kingsley says.

“I have a question about this part, though.” Harry points to some dates at the bottom of the second page. “1985. You were in charge of finding escaped convict Sirius Black and bringing him to justice.” 

“Ah,” Kingsley says. “Yes. I was.” 

“Bringing him to justice means delivering him to the Dementors for the Kiss, correct?’

“Harry--”

“It does, doesn’t it?”

“It did, yes,” Kingsley says.

“And now you’re dating him.”

“Well, now I know he’s not a mass murderer. That does change things, Harry.” 

It is a fair point, not that Harry wants to admit it.

“Can you cast a Patronus?”

“I can.”

“How are your dueling skills?”

“Even better than Moody’s,” Kingsley says. “And I’m re-certified twice a year.”

That’s good, Harry has to admit. That means that Kingsley has the skills to protect Sirius if necessary.

The door to the library opens, and Cedric and Sirius come in. 

“There you two are,” Sirius says cheerfully, but Cedric looks exasperated.

“Harry, we talked about this,” Cedric says. “Sirius is a grown man. He can make his own decisions about who he dates.” 

Harry glares at him. “I have two words for you, Cedric. Gilderoy. Lockhart.” 

Sirius rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. “Not my proudest moment, that.” 

“Besides, if the Minister is going to propose, I have to make sure he’s worthy of Sirius.”

Sirius’s eyes snap to Kingsley. “Propose?”

Kingsley buries his face in his hands. “How can you possibly know about that?”

“Lucky guess.” Harry grabs Cedric’s hand and drags him out of the library. Neither man notices them leave. “Come on. That’ll keep them distracted for a few hours. Let’s go snog in my room.”

He’s wrong.

Sirius is laughing. Agony and madness wrapped into one terrible sound.
