Bullet Mission

I would describe my style of rpg development as Somewhat Self Indulgent.

Ultimately I'm making the game for the reader, but I'm also really bad at resisting the temptation to throw in references and bits of personal experience and stuff that's maybe meaningful only to me.

Anyways, Black Lagoon (and the concept of the gundrama in general) slammed into me at the same time I was starting to realize that I liked pulp, and I haven't done anything with it in the fifteen years since then, so here's a TTRPG where I just kind of let loose and made something edgy and cringe.

You're a mercenary in a Pacific Ocean full of wrecked ships and mutants trying to pick bits of an angel out of the fathomless deep so that a church can end the world.

You don't roll dice to pass checks, you spend bullets. And after a spend, you get some back with a reload. When you don't have the bullets to spend---or you choose not to spend them---you fail the check and things get worse.

Fortunately, you can always conjure up a bunch of bullets if you want to. All you have to do is take a step down the road to your bad ending.

First and foremost I'm a polytheistic Satanist (I'm mainly a devotee to Satan, Lucifer, Apollo, Ares, and Thanatos. Although Lucifer is the main deity who shows up in my work, I worship and work with all five. I'm fairly new to polytheism but not unfamiliar to it. I've been slowly learning over the last...10 years or so, but only after deconstructing my faith and leaving the christian church did I finally follow the call and jumped into learning about and worshiping Satan and Lucifer, and most recently Apollo, Ares, and Thanatos. In my personal life, I'm a huge fan of the band Ghost, I discovered them in the fall of '23 during a really hard time in my life and they really me. After seeing Ghost live on 9/11/23 (barricade baybee), I don't think I can ever live without them 😭 Outside of Ghost, I listen to a lot of music (mainly hard rock & metal), pretty much as long as I'm by myself I'm listening to something. Some current favorite artists/groups are: Chappell Roan, Princess Liv, Drag Talk, Chanter, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, MCR, Metallica, Slayer, Mötley Crüe, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Danzig, Billy Idol, Mary Goore, Twin Temple, Repugnant, Lucifer, Behemoth, Judas Priest, Amon Amarth, Rammstein, Slipknot, and Iron Maiden. I'm also a big film/movie fan, but lately I've gotten into the old horror/suspense universe, especially The Universal Studios Classic Monsters films and some Alfred Hitchcock (mainly Psycho and Vertigo). I'm not the biggest horror fan but Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Wolf Man, and The Creature From The Black Lagoon are all great. I enjoy some of the cheesier Universal Studios horror films as well, they can be a lot of fun. But overall I love watching film, especially older films from the 50s and 60s (The Great Escape and The Magnificent Seven are probably my all time favorite movies). Despite chronic stomach problems and medications that decrease my appetetite, I love Dutch Bros and good BBQ food (or any good food in general). Dutch Bros is one of my biggest weaknesses, I travel over an hour at least once a month to get it. I'm a big BBQ fan, especially ribs 🤤 But overall I love food and trying out new fun spots to eat. I have a bit of a thing for roleplay/asmr audios on youtube, I find them so relaxing and comforting, even if the audio isn't intended for my gender 😤 I listen to a lot of BeforeKnightFalls, Redacted Audio, DadeAudio, Velvet Voice Audios, WhispurrAudio, Nomads Tales, YuuriVoice, Aussie Ben, and BearBoss Audios. At the end of the day, I'm just a boring (but occasionally chaotic) disabled 30 year old stoner. I can be deathly shy when meeting new people, but I would love to make friends with other theistic Satanists & polytheists, or anyone who is part of the Ghost fandom or enjoys anything I've listed above!

Exactly, Del Toro didn't call his movie The Creature Of The Black Lagoon nor claimed it'll be so much better or that it's for the first time the Real Story. He named it The Shape of Water, with original characters, even if it's based on the classic.

Even with Pinocchio he didn't make Geppetto an evil father or the fairy a twist villain or try to subvert everything about it. He respected the characters and gave the story a different dimension, and while it's darker it's not edgier.

Guillermo del Toro is someone you can trust on both sides of the public domain line. He can lift up the original without gutting and destroying the point of the story or bastardizing the characters. He can also recognize when an opposing story has more potential than an outright adaptation, and so invents a new background and new characters to illustrate it rather than obliterating the story that inspired him.

That's the key word I think a lot of the adapting/bastardizing writers are missing in their vocabulary.

Inspiration.

Dracula and other classic gothic literature have inspired tons of new works. Some that are outright spectacular! Some are so close a loving mimic to the originals that they might pass as an adaptation themselves, ala Nosferatu. But others do go absolutely hog wild with their own cast and backdrop, though the skeleton of the story format remains the same.

And that is where the folks who stuff the Count's carcass with their personal fantasy roleplay go so wrong.

Either they've deemed past poor adaptations good enough fodder or they just really like the easy cheat of waving a famous public domain name around as a hook for the audience, but they simply refuse to just let their OCs be OCs.

Dracula inspires you? Dracula's adaptations and spinoffs inspire you? Great! But if they're inspiring you to make a story in which none of the characters, the plot points, or, you know, anything from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula has even a scrap of reference beyond 'there's vampires and we kept the names' then do not call that an adaptation! Do not call it a spinoff!

Make! Your! Own! Shit! Stop trying to peddle your version as some enlightened and Subversive (a word that should be taken away entirely from these guys) take that is almost always ten steps backward compared to the shockingly progressive elements Stoker planted in the book! In 1897!

Anyway.

We would have to wait and see if this applies to other sinner (fallen human) characters in Helluva Boss or Hazbin Hotel, but it could give fans some ideas for art or roleplay

The client appearing at the beginning of Season 2 Episode 5 was a camp counselor murdered by one of his coworkers. He remembered where he was when he died (on a boat in a lake) and how he died (drowning), noticed that there were holes drilled into the boat before dying and knew he had told the other camp counselors that he couldn't swim

Looking at his design, we can tell the client's appearance is based on aquatic themes: his hair has become kelp, his fingers (and possibly toes) have become webbed, his teeth are more shark-like and he has a "lava lamp" effect on his stomach (like Bee-lzabub in S2 Ep 8)

It would make sense to give him fish-like features, if he died in water (especially if the writers were making a joke about him "sleeping with the fishes" now). However, his skin and eyes are more like a deep-sea fish's than the kind you would see in a freshwater lake. At the same time though, he could've been given "creepier" features because his corpse sank to the bottom of the lake (which would explain the kelp hair) or because the lake's water was dark and murky (consider the Creature of the Black Lagoon)

But we still have the question of why his stomach is a blue lava lamp. A friend of mine noticed this first, but she theorized that the color and bubbles in the lamp are meant to symbolize water. This could also reflect how (specifically) the client died: by accidentally swallowing water as he tried (and failed) to swim

This could tell us that a sinner's demonic form references how they died. We could apply this to the "X" on Alastor's forehead and Vaggie's missing eye (also marked with an x), Loopty's teeth being piano keys (because a piano crushed him to death). If Martha were to appear in a later episode, her left eye might be missing (because Moxxie shot her through the head, blowing-out her eyeball)

But as much as this makes sense, there are many sinners whose forms don't match their method of death (if we know it) or clearly show how they died. For example, Mayberry's demonic form was very basic: her skin turned pink and her head sprouted horns. Lyle's form was red skin, horns and green swirling eyes. Angel Dust is a fluffy white and pink spider, Husker is a cat with red feathery wings and Vox has a television for a head

We also have the fan theory that a sinner's form is a reference to what they did in life. For example, Angel Dust, Arackniss, Molly and Henroin are all spider-like because they were all members of the same mafia crime family (spinning "webs of intrigue", as it were). Husker might look like a cat because like a stray "alley cat", he spent many nights in an alley (because he was either thrown-out of a bar or lost all his money gambling, since he's an alcoholic gambler). Vox might've been a famous television host or network producer, just as Alastor might've been a famous radio host

Picaresque Roman

I'm a fan of the Japanese ttrpg design scene. My first non-DnD game was Golden Sky Stories, and I really click with the prevalence of d6s and oneshot-oriented play.

However, my ability to speak/read Japanese is so immensely bad that it changed the trajectory of my life, so I generally have to keep my fingers crossed and hope for translations of the systems I'm excited about.

Hence, when Picaresque Roman came out in English, I scooped up a copy as fast as I could.

Picaresque Roman: A Requiem For Rogues is a competitive pvp tabletop rpg. Probably the closest equivalent to it is werewolf/mafia, but it's not that exactly.

The broad premise is that you're criminals in a hidden city and you're working together in an uneasy truce to take down a big juicy target. All of you are ultimately in it for yourselves, and one of you is a traitor---however there's no mechanic that lets you kill other characters.

Instead, you can gather information (everyone has info cards, which include things like their traitor status), forge truces (or force truces), and shake down each other (or the target) for cash or victory points.

It's a full-fledged rpg, with classes and skills and an action economy, but everything happens in little vignettes. You pick an action, you roll or talk, and that's your turn for the cycle.

It's tightly designed enough that you could play Picaresque Roman without any roleplaying at all and it would still be fun, or you could put a bit of flourish on every action you take and play out quick scenes when you make a truce or rob your target.

I think this might be one of those games where all it really needs is a box and a board and it'd cruise right past people's hesitation around roleplaying and become as popular as Gloomhaven. As is, I think it's a *good* rpg for introducing other people to rpgs, especially if they already vibe with gangster dramas, Guy Ritchie movies, the Yakuza series, or stuff like Black Lagoon or Akudama Drive.
