So a quick note from the editor of Rare Dye...
Having a chronic illness is an unexpected and winding road of a journey. New symptoms seem to pop up all the time, with no explanation and no immediate relief. For the past three months, I've been dealing with symptoms that came out of nowhere. I'm just now finally getting back on track. Whew! This means hopefully an uptick in posting and commentary.
Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program with pretty pictures and stuff. Just wanted to leave space for anyone dealing with chronic illness and or disability. Letting you know that you are seen and believed and a part of Rare Dye is having your needs and concerns in mind. 💕

ur art is crunchy /pos !!! how do you have the confidence to use stuff that isnt pencil and cant rlly be erased if mistakes are made?
Tumblr media
make more mistakes
ACTUAL ANSWER BELOW because it got too long. oops lol
anyway. i wrote “DO IT ON PURPOSE” because when it comes to doing a whole drawing with ONLY a pen- you gotta force your brain get creative- at least practice. in other words- work with what you have. it’s basically like solving a problem every few seconds-
because sometimes my hand eye coordination glitches for a split second. or maybe my hand shook or maybe the line is actually shit looking. but instead of scrapping the thing entirely i gotta to try and make it work. ok so if my line looks like crap here maybe i can make it a Part of the drawing by making everything look messier. OR maybe i can even just. hide it!! by coloring a thicker line along it too!!
you can actually HIDE a LOT of mistakes with a pen without erasing anything. and sometimes the mistakes are part of the art- like when i see the most beautiful art online and i see an uncolored pixel. what matters is your final output not the things you cant change now or mean nothing in the big picture
honestly going from sketch to lines and rendering with a pen is about weight control (like with a pencil- sketching yk) and not beating yourself up. in order to gain the “confidence” you gotta absolutely ANNIHILATE the need for 200% perfection. because theres beauty in a mess.
anyway so. when you get the basic stuff down like “in order to to make less mistakes with pen stuff- make sure youre used to what youre drawing already!!!” or “draw/doodle stupid shit with your pen and make it (pen) a PART of you and not some scary beast (pen)
i think it all stems down to forgiving yourself and just having fun. having fun is always my motto. if you ever go “oh no i made a mistake!!!” imagine me yelling “WHO CAAARRESSS!!!!!!!! (#love #positive)” in your EAR

Curious to know what the big deal is with Fourth Wing and I have notes:
So, Fourth Wing takes place in a world where humans bond with dragons and can telepathically communicate with each other. The plot focuses on a young woman from a noble household who bonds with a rare golden dragon (who has time travel abilities) and an annoying overprotective male dragonrider who is just looking out for her wellbeing. Also, mated dragons have an effect on their riders who will also feel compelled to develop feelings for each other. One of the characters turns out to be a traitor and other political stuff going on in the background.
...
This is Dragons of Pern.
This is just the first book of the Dragons of Pern series, but set in a HTTYD riders of berk school with a tone and vibe on par with The Hunger Games.

It might be because of my COVID booster shot, the fact that I got up early today to go to Quest, or some undiagnosed c. diff (which is the reason I went to Quest), but oh man I am tired af today. I want to play some video games but I'm also freaking wiped out. 😩
I did manage to go for a Pokémon GO walk, so it's not like I didn't do anything today, but it feels kind of bad to not have the energy to do edits tonight. I might just curl up into bed with my Switch or DS after dinner...

i got such a bad migraine someone pls remind me to come back to this when i can form a good thought™ and word it properly but. dc officials have to have SOME level of awareness of the constent mistreatment of talia's character to reduce her to a punchline or antagonist again and again... like, we see it in worlds finest, gotham knights, whatever recent that features her — you cant tell me that it isnt just intentionally decided again and again to continue writing her like this despite being aware of the problematic qualities of it. they have enough awareness in the fandom to bring up uwu batfam moments and make little gags and schticks in multiple pieces of media but they just coincidentally dont see people being rightfully upset at how dc continues to portray her?? bullshit. its as if theyre constantly trying to pretend she wasnt disgustingly retconned and she was just always like this because then they dont have to admit their own continue history of racism and misogyny.
theres still so many batfam focused ppl that will willingly choose again and again to either ignore or excuse their raciam and misogyny. they know they can get away with it and avoid accountability so they continue to do so. theres no reason she had to be brought up and mentioned for a shitty joke — the only reason it was *talia* was because they HAVE to be aware of the reputation they gave her and it was the essiest, most laziest writing chance they had to make a joke thatll just end up posted on twitter without context. theyre aware of the backlash and outcry but all press is good press and they know theres enough people in the comic fandom to defend them so they can avoid actually acknowledging why shes written this shittily in the first place (again, its from raciam and misogyny. literally thats it.)
in fact!!!! they didnt have to have a joke point blank. let the fucking moment sit or better yet — write an actual decent story that does anything. isnt that the point of creating something? to actually say and mean something instead of just filling the comic with shit thatll age badly in a month, much less be iconic for years to come.
they think theyre making a jokey comic that's a fun adventure but instead all they continue to do is make a joke of once beloved characters and reduce them as two dimensional flat mockeries of themselves. its to the point where the only things that are still so iconic about them is their own fucking names — which even that is dwindling rapidly due to their inability to write sincerity or anything meaningful. everything has to constantly end on a punchline or joke so it can be dismissed easier instead of having to take credibility for their shallow, halfassed characterization thats used to cater to their flat writing — which just gets ignored anyways in the favour of pretty art

I used to be smart but now I’ve been declining due to my autoimmune condition and my head is wicked foggy as a result which is nbd bc it’s a relief. Like I’m grateful I’m pretty bc I surely ain’t quite so smart but it rlly does take a lot of pressure off.
i know this isn't very feminist of me and whatnot but am i the only one who would rather be pretty than smart? for me I've accepted the fact that i'm a little stupid but i still chase after being attractive and the validation would be nice

Just wanted to say this for all my non marginalized friends.
Part of the issues that I see from ppl outside of a marginalized community is that those who aren’t apart of a specific community assume things.
STOP ASSUMING THINGS!!!!!
In my opinion, if you have a genuine curiosity and want to learn, ask me questions!!! I’ll try and answer to the best of my ability.

*may contain vague Seven Days In June Spoilers*
I woke up early this morning to finish SDIJ. I also had that instant feeling that it would become something that I hold close to my heart.
Eva’s struggles with her invisible illness are ones that I also have. The rain. The pain meds that numb you. The envy of abled-bodied people and the freeness of how they live life without every step, every movement, every breath being threatened by debilitating pain.
I was talking to a friend who had read the book prior to me who is also black. And we were just basking in the blackness of the novel. From the dialogue, to the inside jokes, to the clothes, and hair. Just the existence of two black main leads being unapologetically Black.
One of my fav things that we talked about was that this wasn’t a book about black pain. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of pain within those pages. BUT the entire arcs of these characters is learning how to live with and embrace their joy along with their pain. That’s what makes this so important to me.
Too often black media is depictions of slavery, addiction, gang violence, etc. Which have their own space. But it’s past time for black media to be filled with joy. We’re not just a people filled sadness and tragedy. We have so much love to share, and embrace.
It’s time we make room for our joy along with our pain. Give them both the attention they deserve without letting one outshine the other. Because without the other, they have no meaning.
just started reading "seven days in june" and im only a few pages in and i can already tell this book will mean a lot to me
i mean we have a Black female lead with a chronic illness and this quote just hit me:
"And her disability was invisible - she wasn't missing a limb or in a full-body cast. Her level of suffering seemed impossible for others to fathom." like COME ON
