Hair that had survived the destruction of the temple, the roman legions, the long road to Morocco, that had endured conquest and conversion. Hair of the sands, of sun washed stones, of an horizon she would never see.
The Familiar (Leigh Bardugo)
(Leigh wrote this for her fellow Jews actually. Specifically for us)

how people go about interpreting dr bashir I presume? really frustrates me sometimes ngl especially the “jules bashir died” scene.
like that whole scene is about julian revealing the depth of how deeply his augmentations fractured his sense of identity and who he is - which feeds into the themes of the whole episode surrounding how disability and then by extension disabled people are often viewed as a problem to be solved and because of that are often denied the ability to have fulfilling lives because the able bodied people around them don’t believe that they can.
but… idk, when the fandom talks about it there’s always seems to be a push to read a trans allegory into it that I don’t think is really there? I keep mulling over this post in my mind and when I initially reblogged it I didn’t really want to talk about this because the post is about how stories about racism can be hijacked by white people to be made about their own transness and it felt like as a white person, using that post to complain about ableism would be missing the point. but it really helped me articulate in my mind why the trans reading of this episode feels off to me because the same general principle seems to apply and that is taking a story trying to discuss a specific type of marginalisation and putting a trans reading above it because you can relate more to it personally.
“jules bashir died in that hospital because you couldn't live with the shame of having a son who didn't measure up!” this scene is the culmination of julian expressing his pain about what was done to him as a disabled child by his parents due to how they viewed his disability. but often when I see it being discussed, people aren’t really interested in talking about that. instead supplanting it with a trans reading instead which, in my opinion is an allegory that doesn’t even really work when you think about what’s going on in the broader context of the scene.
julian didn’t stop going by jules because he came to the conclusion on his own that the identity didn’t suit him similar to the way a trans person questions or rejects the gender they were assigned at birth, he stopped going by jules because he felt like the identity attached to that name was taken from him because of what his parents did. it’s not julian affirming who he wants to be it’s grieving over who he can’t be and to me at least, it’s honestly kind of harrowing.
and as an aside: when people read transness into a story about parents who change their child’s body and mind at a very young age without consent, which is literally a narrative projected onto trans people by transphobes to justify the curtailing of trans rights, that also doesn’t sit well with me. I think people latch onto this reading because of the idea of “killing a name” but again in the context of the whole episode the trans reading really doesn’t feel appropriate.
I think it’s okay for people to have trans headcanons about julian of course or literally any character they want to really, but I think saying that specific episode codes him as trans isn’t all that great honestly.

Ugh.
Sometimes I remember that Bad Batch gave us this badass Black woman who was a liberator of ancient wonders and was like Indiana Jones but fucking cooler and witty, charming, and FUN and so so so nice and caring and understanding and she befriended the Bad Batch and gave them a safe place in the galaxy to call home and then made her the love interest of the heavily autistic coded white-washed Maori man and thus made them an interracial couple
AND THEN-
they killed off Tech and then used Phee as an uber driver for s3 and didn't give her any closure or anything for his death.

Helloo Sherlock & Co fandom, this is the only time I'm contributing anything I think lol. I love Joe he's my favorite character and I'll definitely never hear from him again but it's okay I'll keep his spirit alive through the power of not shutting the hell up about him
and uhh I'll put my art I've done under a cut so this post isn't too annoying to scroll past lol

the thing about culture that's difficult for a lot of people it seems to me is that "culture" is not some ontologically coherent Blob where you can sit at the table and someone will serve it to you and you get to just sit there and Receive it. or, it's not something you can dig up and carefully extract unchanged, if you sit carefully enough at your books, and then put on your mantle to admire. i'm a motherfucker whose career is about digging things up from books so i get the appeal, and yet that's not what Culture is, because culture is what you Do. so you already have one. what food do you eat? where do you live? what rituals do you perform? do you take your shoes off when you go inside?
culture is distinct from religion and ethnicity (though obviously it's interrelated with both), and deeply related to the place you live now and its customs and foodways and norms for politeness and hospitality, and what other populations live around you in the place you live now. trying to connect to the mystical immigrant old-country past of your ancestors is unlikely to get you the results you're looking for - culture is something you do every day and i promise you already have one. and you're already doing it. which means that you can also just as easily change the things you do if you don't like them.

I'm mostly seeing and hearing one thing and I can only conclude that people are saying that all the problems and everything that is going wrong is the very fault of an abused woman and a man of color, problems that began way before they became central pieces in the game. I'm not excusing what they do or didn't do, but don't come here and dare say everything is their fault, because it's not.
I hope they cut nettles. I can only imagine what you all will do to her...

The golem is too small - but the children who make him, who hand him to their baby siblings to hold who have shaped him with small hands - they make a friend. From the very first children of exile, little ones yearning for their home - they wished for a friend - these small babies - toddlers with halting steps and little tiny children. And so he is shaped to them - to be held.
From all soils but home, he is reshaped - small hands and prayers and hopes - little wishes along with them - from Shiraz to London to Aksum to those that remain in Yerushaláyim - children add buttons, beads, colours and love - the warmth of small hands no matter what happens.
The Golem wishes he was large, that he could protect them - but he can be with them, all the children who are lost to an endless ancient hate - a hand to hold at the end, perhaps a shield from pain.
He lives in a bright place - filled with paints, with colour and toys and he will protect it always and always - though he is very small, he can protect this place now, this little haven and the little ones who pass through the doors.

Hey if you're a white person (as I am too!) and reading the stuff about End OTW Racism (@end-otw-racism) is making you uncomfortable CONGRATULATIONS THATS THE POINT bipoc have been uncomfortable in fandom for decades and some of yall can't face being uncomfortable for five seconds and still have the gall to have shit like BLM in your descriptions.
Put your money where your mouth is. Be uncomfortable. Actually read what they're talking about and what changes they're proposing instead of jumping right to BuT wHaT aBoUt My DaRk FiC (they want to protect your dark fic and help ensure you're safer from harassment over it!)and ThEy'Re PrO-cEnSoRsHiP (they are explicitly not).
I'm so fucking tired of having my posts and those I reblog on this topic largely ignored on my personal account, but ESPECIALLY I'm furious about how ignored posts on racism in fandom are when I put them on the danmei art sideblogs.
I see racism every single fucking DAY as part of running those accounts. This isn't some nebulous thing happening elsewhere, this is us!
If you don't care, I really need you to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself WHY DONT I CARE?
Because YOU SHOULD FUCKING CARE.
