The Last Island: Discovery, Defiance, & The Most Elusive Tribe On Earth by Adam Goodheart
4/5⭐
This is a nonfiction book that delves into the history of the Adaman Islands and North Sentinel Island while following the story of a historian -- Adam Goodheart -- who traveled there to do research. The Adaman Islands are a remote archipelago in the Indian Ocean, currently under the control of India. They are home to some of the most isolated indigenous peoples in the world including the Jarawa, the Onge, and the Sentinelese with the Sentinelese perhaps being the most isolated tribe in the world. That we know of.
This has somehow managed to be one of the most hopeful and depressing books I've ever read in my life. It reads more like a novel than a textbook which is a plus for me, and it's definitely more of a book about perseverance than anything else. It's a story about how the indigenous peoples of the Adamans managed to survive despite colonists' best efforts to erase them from the earth. Like all history, there are parts of the book that are incredibly disturbing and depressing to read. Frankly, if those parts don't enrage you then.......You should probably find someone to talk to about that.
The way historians before Goodheart have written about the Adamanese and the Sentinelese is disgusting. Some of it was fascinating until it finally sinks in that these are people who are considered subhuman by their oppressors. And that's not okay. Like to suggest that they are ancestors of a lost species of human is an interesting hypothesis. That doesn't make them beneath anyone else, though. Reading this I couldn't help but think that anthropology is a really fucked up field of science. You're literally treating humans and their various cultures as science experiments. Like what the fuck?
It made me feel a bit guilty for how much I loved this book, I'm not gonna lie. Cause like these are people's lives and cultures. They aren't artifacts or play things. They're human beings that are entitled to their privacy which has been encroached upon by people like Goodheart who are so eager to shove them under a microscope. Tribal reserves have been transformed into human zoos.
That being said, I would definitely recommend this to anyone with an interest in history or foreign cultures. There are parts of it that are difficult to read but that's just how history is. It's not pretty. It's appropriate for ages twelve and up.

Tapping the "your support and solidarity and care for Jews and Romani people and BIPOC should be more powerful than your hatred of nazis" sign so fucking hard rn.
Bcs u should support Jews and Romani people and BIPOC more than u hate nazis and some of u it is very clear that u couldn't give a shite about Jews and romani or BIPOC. You hate nazis but you've forgotten nazis aren't just generalised bigots or bad people and they have an ideology which targets "undesirables" and people who ate racially seen as inferior or less than. Only part of combating white supremacy and fascism is hating nazis and a lot of it is helping communities effected by white supremacy and fascism and listening to and understanding us.

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

While this information may technically be new, government infiltration is not. As mentioned in the video, COINTELPRO is a perfect historical example of the insidious downfall of so many leftist grassroots organizations, and guess what? We've made posts about COINTELPRO in the past!
This information isn't made to scare you though, but to empower us all to come together even stronger, even smarter, even more diligently. We owe it to ourselves, to our communities, and to our predecessors to do at least that much. As working class citizens, we must protect one another. Do not get distracted by the divisions those in power wish to ensue.
Confused on where to start? Even if you don't apply as a volunteer, @bfpnola is a safe space for all youth activists to ask questions and receive free resources! Here’s what you need to get started:

The Black Empress of China (throwback)
Tumblr media
Today I want to do a throwback to a 2019 piece I did of Empress Li from the Chinese Jin Dynasty (266-420 AD). Chroniclers described her as "tall and black", characteristics for which the Emperor's concubines mocked her. Nonetheless, she would proceed to give birth to the Emperor Xiao Wu (r. 373-396 AD). It's anyone's guess where Empress Li came from, but I like to think it was somewhere in eastern Africa, especially since they tend to have taller stature than either Indian or Asian Negrito people in addition to being dark-skinned.

Aníbal Quijano's essay "Coloniality and Modernity/Rationality" is a short and interesting read if you're interested in the way colonialism shapes subjectivity, knowledge-production and epistemology more broadly ❤️

PoC is not synonymous with Black.
Read that again.
PoC is not synonymous with Black.
So please stop using it that way. Black is not a dirty word, and it's not bad to say. So say it!! I'm tired of y'all saying PoC when you mean Black. I AM BLACK!! CALL ME THAT!! Not PoC. Not African American.
