"The symbol of Binyamin is wolf. It is on his flag. Everyone agrees about that. So take with that what you will."
- I'm not sure there's THAT much to be taken of it on its own, because that's true of multiple tribes. Judah is a lion, Dan is a snake, Naftali is a gazelle, Issachar is a donkey, Joseph is an ox. In the same section where Benjamin is described as a ravenous wolf, they're all described as their animals as well: "Judah is a lion’s whelp", "Dan shall be a serpent by the road, a viper by the path", etc. And likewise, they also had the corresponding animals on their flags (according to Midrash Rabbah, as the flags aren't described in the Torah itself).
Despite that, to my knowledge Binyamin is the only one where it's suggested his animal motif might be literal and not just metaphorical/symbolic. Although it's very cool to imagine them having a whole team of shapeshifters in the family! 😂
I do think that's necessary context here though - on the face if it, Binyamin's association with wolves is not particularly noteworthy. It's interesting to wonder therefore why this particular idea arose around him and only him. Possibly because by the time R' Ephraim was writing in the 12th century, werewolf myths were already a common thing? (See for example medieval werewolf story Bisclavret, written in 12th-century France just like R' Ephraim's commentary was.)
I heard somewhere that there is an opinion that Binyamin was a werewolf. Do you know anything about this?
It's a thing!
It's derived from this phrase in Parshat VaYechi, the last Parsha in Bereishit (Genesis):
בִּנְיָמִין֙ זְאֵ֣ב יִטְרָ֔ף בַּבֹּ֖קֶר יֹ֣אכַל עַ֑ד וְלָעֶ֖רֶב יְחַלֵּ֥ק שָׁלָֽל׃
"Binyamin is a devouring wolf, in the morning he shall consume his foe, and in the evening he divides the spoils." [Bereisht 49:27]
The Tosafist Rabbi Ephraim ben Shimshon said thus:
"Benjamin was a ravenous wolf, who would occasionally maul people -- and when the time came for him to turn into a wolf, as it says, "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf" (Gen. 49:27), if he was with his father he could rely on a physician, and in that merit would not turn into a wolf. Thus it says, "and if he leaves his father he will die" (Gen. 44:22) -- that is to say, if he separates from his father he will turn into a wolf [and attack] people on the way, and anyone who encounters him will kill him."
[translated from Hebrew by Rabbi Natan Slifkin]
According to Rabbeinu Ephraim, Binyamin was a werewolf. When he was at home, he was able to be controlled or cured by a physician under his father. The reason the brothers were so reluctant to part from Binyamin is because he was a werewolf, and without his father he would become uncontrollable.
Werewolfs were creatures discussed by many Jewish figures throughout history. They were a creature accepted in the "mythological canon", so to say.
....
Regardless.....
The symbol of Binyamin is wolf. It is on his flag. Everyone agrees about that. So take with that what you will.
Here's a collection of writings about this from Sefaria, if you'd like to learn more:

« Likud, once Israel’s relatively normal center-right party, is now a hollowed-out vehicle for Netanyahu’s ambitions. Its parliamentary ranks are mostly made up of the prime minister’s toadies. »
— Zack Beauchamp at Vox.
If that comment sounds familiar, it's because that is exactly what has happened to the Republican Party under Trump.
Bibi Netanyahu has been in a leadership position of Likud for most of the past 31 years. Weird Donald has been dominating the GOP for only about 9 years. So Republicans made the GOP an appendage of Trump much more quickly than it took Netanyahu to turn Likud into a Bibi plaything.
Both Bibi and Weird Donald are under indictment. But Trump is not just under indictment, he's also a convicted felon and an adjudicated sex offender. Maybe that's why Trump likes meeting with Bibi so much.

Among many “progressives,” the atrocities produced a profound sense of disorientation. This was because the Palestinians — people whose cause they had promoted as the acme of conscience and enlightenment — turned out to be barbaric savages. Even worse, people the progressives had opposed and stigmatised as the “far-right” because they had regarded the Palestinians as murderous foes turned out to have been correct all along. Worse yet again, some people on their own side actually turned on them for supporting Israel against Hamas. This was a terrible and destabilising shock. That’s because the left is governed by a herd mentality. Their views have to conform to the opinion of similarly “enlightened” people. Anyone who isn’t part of the progressive herd is “right-wing” and wrong about everything. Moreover, since progressives believe that they embody virtue itself, right-wingers aren’t just wrong but evil. Yet the October 7 massacre revealed that the people supported by the progressives were evil. This put progressives in a terrible bind. They couldn’t accept anything that revealed their own narrative to be so morally bankrupt.
British Jewish journalist Melanie Phillips, hitting the mark once again in her latest column, The Terror of the Right. In it, she points out that the Israeli people are united behind Prime Minister Netanyahu's strategy for defeating Hamas, even if they don't agree with him politically. Yet foreign observers, such as the Biden administration, convince themselves that removing Netanyahu will make the Israelis support a Palestinian state. It will not.

Israel used US-made munitions to kill 43 civilians in Gaza: Rights group
The Israeli military killed 43 Palestinians using US-made munitions in two documented air strikes in the blockaded Gaza Strip, Amnesty International said in a report on Tuesday.
“A new investigation by Amnesty International has found US-made Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) were used by the Israeli military in two deadly, unlawful air strikes on homes full of civilians in the occupied Gaza Strip,” the organization said in a post on X.
“The two strikes killed a total of 43 civilians. In both cases, survivors said there had been no warning of an imminent strike,” the watchdog added.
“These strikes were either direct attacks on civilians or civilian objects or indiscriminate attacks. They must be investigated as war crimes,” Amnesty further said.
The organization also called upon the US to stop arms supply to Israel.
“The US must immediately stop transferring arms to Israel that more likely than not will be used to commit or heighten risks of violations of international law,” it concluded in the post.
The organization also published additional details on its website.
"The organization found that these air strikes were either direct attacks on civilians or civilian objects or indiscriminate attacks and is calling for them to be investigated as war crimes," the watchdog said in the statement on its website.
"On 10 October, an air strike on the al-Najjar family home in Deir al-Balah killed 24 people. On 22 October, an air strike on the Abu Mu’eileq family home in the same city killed 19 people. Both homes were south of Wadi Gaza, within the area where, on 13 October, the Israeli military had ordered residents of northern Gaza to relocate to," it added.
Agnes Callamard, the secretary general of Amnesty International, said: “The fact that US-made munitions are being used by Israeli military in unlawful attacks with deadly consequences for civilians should be an urgent wake-up call to the (Joe) Biden administration. The US-made weapons facilitated the mass killings of extended families.”
“Two families have been decimated in these strikes, further proof that the Israeli military is responsible for unlawfully killing and injuring civilians in its bombardment of Gaza," said Callamard, who is a former UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial Summary or Arbitrary Executions.
“In the face of the unprecedented civilian death toll and scale of destruction in Gaza, the US and other governments must immediately stop transferring arms to Israel that more likely than not will be used to commit or heighten risks of violations of international law," she added.
The secretary general also emphasized that "to knowingly assist in violations is contrary to the obligation to ensure respect for international humanitarian law."
"A state that continues to supply arms being used to commit violations may share responsibility for these violations,” she added in criticism of the US for arms transfers to Israel.
The watchdog also said that there were "no legitimate military targets" in the area Israel bombed.
"Amnesty International did not find any indication that there were any military objectives at the sites of the two strikes or that people in the buildings were legitimate military targets, raising concerns that these strikes were direct attacks on civilians," it said.
"In addition, even if the strikes – which Israel has yet to provide any information about – were intended to target military objectives, the use of explosive weapons with wide-area effects in such densely populated areas could make these indiscriminate attacks. As such, these attacks must be investigated as war crimes," Amnesty added.
'Bombs used US-manufactured JDAM kits'
"In both attacks, the bombs used US-manufactured JDAM kits," the watchdog said.
"The photos of the metal fragments from the weapons clearly show the distinctive rivets and harness system that indicate they served as a part of the frame that surrounds the body of the bomb of a JDAM. In addition, the codes stamped on the plates from both sets of recovered scrap, 70P862352, are associated with JDAMs and Boeing, the manufacturer," Amnesty said.
It added that additional codes stamped on the plates "indicate that the JDAM that killed members of the al-Najjar family was manufactured in 2017, while the JDAM that killed members of the Abu Mu’eileq family was manufactured in 2018."
The organization also said that they contacted the Israeli military to inquire about the attacks and have not received a response from it yet.
"Amnesty International sent questions regarding the two attacks to the Israeli military’s spokesperson unit on 21 November. At the time of publication, no response had been received," it concluded.
Israel resumed its military offensive on the Gaza Strip on Friday after the end of a weeklong humanitarian pause with the Palestinian group Hamas.
At least 15,899 Palestinians have been killed and more than 42,000 others injured in relentless air and ground attacks on the enclave since Oct. 7 following a cross-border attack by Hamas.
The Israeli death toll in the Hamas attack stood at 1,200, according to official figures.

New details have been cleared for publication about the murder of 14-year-old Binyamin Ahimeir in the Binyamin Region.
The first to reach the body were Brigadier General Hazi Nehama, who volunteered to search, and Eliyahu Libman, whose son is being held by Hamas.
The two were directed to the area of the body.
Libman recounted finding the body: "This was a particularly cruel murder. An IDF drone saw something unusual and sent us a waypoint. We were close to the area, so we went to search there and unfortunately found the body."
"It was quite close to where he had set out from. The site was extremely disturbing. His head had been smashed with a rock, and three meters away was a knife covered in blood and another rock. His phone was smashed nearby.
This was particularly cruel and horrifying."
This was the young 14-year-old Jewish boy who was out watching sheep when Palestinian terrorist brutally murdered him crushed his head with a large Rock.
He was found today.
We are all grieving deeply from this 😭
