Let me just say it, jkr is brilliant at writing friendships and individual characters but absolute shit at writing romance. None of the main ships were well written, the side ones were much better, though probably because we don't have enough info for them to be ruined
Ships I like :
Bill and Fleur - 💯💯💯 second best ship in the books imo
Molly and Arthur - for some reason the fandom hates this ship. U need to be a solid team to pull off a family of 7 kids ( especially with 6 boys). They also clearly love each other, they even call each other cute nicknames. What's not to like?
Dumbledore and Grindelwald - this is going to bring me hate, but they're my fav couple in the whole series. I don't need a couple to be morally good to appreciate the pairing. Probably the only well written one because they're both fleshed out as characters. Their relationship only makes them more complex and interesting than they already are.
Ships I dislike :
Harry and Ginny - The protagonist's love story was a disappointment. Ginny could have been such an interesting character, instead she was made into the boring 'perfect girl tm' just to become Harry's 'ideal partner'. She's basically made into a female version of james without his flaws being called out. Harry's 'chest monster' was cringe asf, sounded like something tht could hv been picked out of Twilight 😂😂
Ron and Hermione - i like the idea of them, but i don't think it was executed well. That bird attack practically made its appeal non existent for me ( i love Hermione but wtf)
James and Lily - we know a lot about James's character but very little about lily despite the fact that they're both dead before the series starts. James hexing Snape behind Lily's back doesn't set a good precedent, seeing as they get married the very next yr. Lily almost smiling at Snape's underpants being exposed is never addressed when Harry's being critical about james. To me it honestly feels lyk shipping james with a ghost as we know nothing substantial about lily.
PS: I also really appreciate the fact that Sirius was never paired up with anyone. He was far too broken and rebellious and traumatized. He had different priorities and I m so glad his character wasn't forced into one. Single characters for the win, they're such a rarity in fiction

I just have a lot of Bill feels, okay?
It was a cold winter day in the Burrow. 9-year-old Charlie Weasley was sitting on the living room carpet, in front of the fireplace, watching his baby sister flail around joyfully with her toys and watching over her, making sure she doesn’t go off the carpet or near the fireplace.
It was nearing Christmas time, and that was when Charlie’s older brother, Bill, was meant to come home. He’d been in Hogwarts since September, and despite the many letters exchanged between him and the rest of the family, Charlie couldn’t take being away from his brother for so long.
His father, Arthur, came downstairs dressed in travel robes. Charlie looked up from Ginny’s sweet round face to look at his dad.
“Are you going to pick up Bill?” He asked hopefully.
Arthur smiled at him. “Yes, I am. I’m going to pick him up from the train station right now.”
Charlie’s heart skipped a beat. “Finally! I missed him so much! Can I come with you?”
Arthur knelt beside him. “No, sweetheart. Mummy needs you here. Who will watch over Ginny?”
Charlie’s excitement deflated. He’d forgotten, but he had an important responsibility now. He looked back at Ginny and muttered, “Do you promise you’ll bring him home?”
Arthur gently ruffled his hair. “Promise.”
About thirty minutes later, the door opened and Arthur walked in, with Bill right by his side. His cheeks were flushed from the cold, and his hair had gotten longer, but he was smiling. The moment Charlie saw him, he jumped off the couch and ran towards his brother.
“Bill!” He called out in joy.
Bill dropped everything— his trunk, his bag, his father’s hand— and wrapped Charlie in his arms. “Charlie! I’ve missed you!”
Charlie buried himself in his big brother’s embrace, hugging him tightly. “I missed you too,” he said, his voice muffled by Bill’s jumper. “So much!”
The two brothers were still hugging when Arthur ushered them inside so that he could close the door, and they were still hugging when everyone else came up to greet Bill. And when Bill turned to hug his other siblings, his hand stayed firmly on Charlie’s shoulder.
He only let go when he stepped forward to pick Ginny up from the carpet and hold her in his arms. Once his hand left Charlie’s shoulder, Charlie felt like something was being physically torn out of him. He hadn’t realised before how badly he needed the warmth and comfort of his brother’s touch. He watched as Bill cradled Ginny in his arms and spoke to her in a gentle, loving voice, telling her how cute she was and how much he’d missed her.
Charlie couldn’t help the song of jealousy that coursed through him. He loved seeing Bill with their younger siblings like that, but a part of him desperately wanted his brother’s full, undivided attention.
That evening, after dinner, Bill placed his school trunk on the floor of his and Charlie’s bedroom. He felt strange, as if he was a guest in his own home. But that feeling dissipated as soon as Charlie walked in, and was replaced by concern.
Charlie looked sad and hesitant. He sat down on his bed and watched Bill with his big blue eyes.
He put down the book he was taking out of his trunk and sat down on Charlie’s bed, next to him. “Hey, what’s the matter?”
Charlie hesitated. He wasn’t looking Bill in the eyes, instead focusing on his fingers, which were fiddling with the hem of his jumper.
“It’s just… I missed you so much,” he said quietly. “I feel so happy you’re finally home. But… When you held Ginny, I couldn’t help but feel jealous.”
Bill bit back his gasp of surprise. That wouldn’t help either of them. Instead, he reached over and placed a hand on Charlie’s shoulder. “There’s no need for jealousy. I missed you too, and I love you so, so much. You know that, right?”
Charlie nodded slowly. “Yeah, I know that. But it’s just… I don’t know. I kinda want your attention all to myself. I know it’s silly, but I can’t help it.”
“It isn’t silly,” said Bill firmly. He then hesitated, trying to find the right words. “I understand why you feel like that. You’ve missed me. You’ve had to do everything I’ve done for the past eleven years.” He paused. “Actually, I’ve only been a big brother since you were born, so it’s actually nine years. But that’s still a lot.”
Charlie finally looked up at him and nodded. “Yeah, exactly. I’ve had to do everything myself, and… it’s been really hard.” He took a deep breath. “It’s just… I’ve missed having you around, teaching me things, protecting me. And now that you’re back, I guess I just don’t want to share your attention. It probably sounds childish, but…”
“It does sound childish,” said Bill, “but Charlie, you are a child. Everything is ‘childish’, it’s not a bad thing. You only get one chance at childhood, Char. You’re gonna be a grown-up for the rest of your life. You can never be a child again. So… don’t rush it. Let yourself be a child. Let others do the work for you while you can.”
Charlie stared at him while he spoke, feeling a mixture of acceptance and disappointment.
“I guess… I guess you’re right. But it still feels hard, sometimes. I want to be strong and independent, like you.”
Bill couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped his throat, but his voice was quiet. “I’m not strong, Charlie. Not at all. I need to pretend to be strong, but I’m not. And… It's not fun to pretend. It hurts. You shouldn’t aspire to be like me at all, it’s really exhausting. Let yourself be you. You’re perfect just the way you are, and let no one take that away from you.”
Charlie’s heart squeezed at Bill’s words. He’d always looked up to his brother, seeing him as strong and fearless, and it was a shock to heat him admit that he was pretending.
“But… you always seem so in control, like you can handle anything,” he said softly. “I thought… I thought you were invincible.”
Bill shook his head. “No one is invincible. Not even me. Especially not me. I crack, and I break, and I cry, just like anyone else. The difference is that I don’t have an index brother to go to, so I need to be my own support. I have to be strong, or else…” He hesitated. “Well, I’m not sure what would happen if I let myself fall apart. And I don’t want to find out.”
Charlie’s eyes widened. “You… can’t go to anyone? Not even Mum and Dad?”
“Mum and Dad… Well… they don’t really understand,” he said softly. “They expect me to be strong, to be perfect, to be successful, to be a good example. That’s what I need to be for them, and for you. I’m sort of… stuck in the middle, I suppose.”
Charlie felt a pang of guilt. He hadn’t realised how much pressure Bill was under. And now, he was adding to it by being jealous.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled. “I didn’t know you were feeling like that. I just… I want your attention sometimes, that’s all.”
Bill scooped Charlie into his arms and held him close. “Don’t be sorry, Char. I love doing this. I love being your older brother. I love spending time with you and the others. I love you. And if that means I need to be strong and endure pain, so be it.”
Charlie melted into Bill’s embrace, feeling his brother’s strong, supportive arms around him. He buried his face in Bill’s chest, savouring the feeling of safety and love that came with being held by his big brother.
That night, Charlie slept soundly. Bill had spent the evening tucking in each of his siblings, speaking to them gently. Once they’d all fallen asleep, he was laying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling and listening to Charlie’s soft snores in the bed next to his. Charlie’s words were echoing in Bill’s mind; ‘I missed you so much! I missed you so much! I missed you so much!’
He himself was happy at Hogwarts. It was his first opportunity to be his own person, not just a son and brother. But now, knowing the effect his absence had on his family, he started wondering whether he’d made the right choice going to Hogwarts.
He tried to distract himself by glancing out the window at the falling snow. What would he not give to be a flake of snow; to be free-falling, landing softly on a mat of grass until the weather warmed and washed him away. He felt scared and desperate and so incredibly alone. He wanted to cry, to call out that he needed a big brother, but he couldn’t. He was the big brother, and no one else could do his job for him.
Don’t cry, he mentally scolded himself. You can cry when you get back to Hogwarts.
The thought of Hogwarts caused a new wave of concern to wash over him. How could he go back to school, knowing how much pain it caused his family?
But did he truly have a choice? If he didn’t learn to control his magic, it would consume him, and he would become an Obscurus. If he let that happen, his siblings, his parents, his whole family would be in danger. In danger from him. He couldn’t afford that. Not to mention, being an Obscurus sounded absolutely terrifying.
Finally, Charlie started waking up, providing Bill with a welcomed distraction.
That’s what his life had become; surviving solely off of distractions, moving from one to the other with the occasional breakdown. He filled his life with as much occupation as possible; he took all the extra classes he could in school, and made sure to excel in all of them. He volunteered to be a Prefect, and then Head Boy, and spent all his free time roaming the halls and helping other students. At home, he occupied himself by caring for his siblings, helping his parents cook and clean, listen to Charlie’s rants about dragons, provide Percy with stimulation as per his needs, keep the twins and their chaos in check while making sure each of them felt seen and heard as their own person, and not two halves of a whole. He helped Ron develop his chess skills, and supported Ginny in her ambition to become a Quidditch player. When he wasn’t doing any of that, he was out in the garden, doing work that didn’t really need to be done. When the time came, he found the most extravagant and time-consuming job he could— Curse-Breaking in the pyramids of Egypt. He enrolled himself in summer courses, and immediately regretted it; Egypt was insanely hot in summer. But he worked, and worked, and worked, and slowly got better. His knowledge of Ancient Runes was faster than most, and he threw himself into work and studies as much as he could.
When none of that helped, he turned to books. Reading had become his escape from reality. When he ran out of wizard books to read, he turned to Muggle books, reading about their fantasy and their religion and their history and philosophy and animals and their insane takes on magic. It was books that made him feel like, perhaps, he wasn’t completely alone.
Until Fleur came.
He and his mother went to support Harry during the third task of the Triwizard Tournament, and there, in the contestants’ room, he saw the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Her beauty quite literally took his breath away, but he did not permit himself to look at her. Her kept his gaze away from anything that wasn’t her eyes, knowing and imagining that she was probably used to being objectified, to being stared at by strange men. He did not wish to make her uncomfortable.
But then she came to him. She walked up to him, after the Tournament’s disastrous end, and asked him for help finding a job in England. He immediately recommended Gringotts, and so they ended up working together during the war. She was the one who had asked him out, innocently requesting that he’d show her some nice cafes in the area. It was only afterwards, when she smiled and said “it was a nice date, I’d love to meet up again soon” that he realised it had been a date all along. He went home feeling overjoyed.
Their relationship developed slowly, starting off with casual coffee dates and short lessons in English requested by Fleur. The lessons were very slow and somewhat frustrating to them both, as Bill did not speak a word of French. When there was a word he needed to translate for her, he’d just flail about with precise descriptions of it until she understood. She was truly brilliant, far better than what anyone had given her credit for.
Gradually, they began to open up to each other. Over a bottle of fine French wine, Fleur had spilled her heart out to Bill over that night in the labyrinth. He listened in silence until she requested input, and then he comforted her and gave advice until she told him to stop.
Next time, Bill brought Firewhiskey, and he told Fleur everything. About how he lived in numbness for longer than he could remember, how he’d had to make do with distractions for his entire life. How he had no one to go to for help and support.
That night, Fleur took his hand and said, “You can always come to me.”
That night, Bill realised he was in love.

This final chapter is so beautiful 😍 I am in love with how all of the kids find love I cannot believe that tttc is over KISMET Is done!
Thank you for writing such a beautiful trilogy @breaniebree THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART ❤️
Tumblr media
THE FINAL CHAPTER IS HERE!
Chapter 41 -- The One With the Final Epilogue
Well, this is it!  THE FINAL LAST EPILOGUE AND LAST CHAPTER of my world of Kismet.  It started back in 2018 with some random Marauder snippets that I put aside to write about Sirius and Remus raising Harry which turned from a 25 chapter story idea to 360 chapters of A Second Chance and led me to write a prequel with my original Marauder snippets in The First Time Around.  It ended with Third Times the Charm.
As I always say, I write this story for myself first and this is the final chapter of what I wanted to write and how I wanted to end my world of Kismet.  I’m very excited to share it with you and I hope you’re excited to read it.  I hope those of you who have been reading this story have been enjoying it even half as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it and that you like the ending as much as I do.  And for those of you who don’t, I thank you for reading as long as you have and hope you find a story some day that pleases you more.  There are a lot of amazing writers in the world and I hope someone gives you the ending you want.
As for me I am very proud of my final scene and of this trilogy.
THANK YOU!
I would like to firstly thank @thedistantdusk, who even though only was my Beta from chapters 200-360 of ASC and for all of The First Time Around, her patience and guidance were greatly appreciated.  Thank you to SilverStarwolfe who was my first Beta from about chapter 120-190 before life got in the way and she had to stop, her patience and guidance was also greatly appreciated.  Thank you to @seriouslysam8 who was an amazing sounding board and helped me work out the kinks in the final idea of Sirius and Zee and helped me come up with the story titles for The First Time Around and Third Times the Charm.  I really appreciate all of the help she gave me and hope one day she might even read it too.  LOL.  Thank you to @ellieoryan7447 for being such an amazing reader who went out of her way to attempt to make character art all about my characters.  It’s surreal to me that people even want to do that and is more appreciated than I can possibly put into words.  And lastly, thank you to @celtics534 for putting up with my random asks about reading over scenes, giving great writing advice, and not being afraid to tell me when something is crap and how to fix it.  You’re more appreciated than you know.  PS — Sorry for bothering the crap out of you with final reviews of this last chapter LOL.
Thank you to everyone who has been reading from the beginning, to those jumped in somewhere in the middle, and to anyone new who stumbled across this world when the final story was ending.  THANK YOU!
Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to follow me in this story-writing journey for the last six years.  It means so much to me.
I have no plans of writing anything else in the near future, as I do very much need a break, but who knows what the future will bring.  These epilogues, while being very much a conclusion, still leave lots of holes for me to jump back in if I ever want to (old and next generation).  It leaves the world of Kismet open to me in the future while still showing you that that there was a happily ever after for these characters (which is very much deserved).
Thank you again for all of the continuous support and love I have received.
Please remember to drop a review — I love to read to them.
THANK YOU!
Love always, 😘

Bisexual Harry Potter who flirts with every single Weasley sibling just to piss of Ron.
“Y’know Ron? I love your sister and all, but I hope you know Bill was my bi awakening. I’d totally go there”
Fred and George flirting back shamelessly.
Percy pretends to be annoyed, but secretly enjoys watching Ron squirm. He stage-kisses Harry one afternoon when Ron was being particularly annoying.
Fleur laughing as Bill jokingly proposes to Harry at every family gathering
Charlie and Harry talking about adopting dragons together and calling them “our kids”
Harry and Ginny, who actually *are* dating, being obnoxiously lovey-dovey when Ron’s around.
Molly and Arthur going along with it and calling Harry their Seven Time Son-in-Law.
Molly knits Harry his own set of sweaters that are identical to those of her other children.
Harry comes downstairs wearing a different one every morning.
“YOU CANT HAVE ALL MY SIBLINGS HARRY!”

I’d love if you ever expanded your thoughts on the way JKR writes romance, because it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while. One thing that’s very interesting to me is that jealousy is used as a driving force for both of the main romantic storylines in HP. It’s more obvious with Ron/Hermione (the Yule Ball, basically everything that happens between them in book 6, the locket horcrux stuff) but also plays a big role in Harry/Ginny. Harry’s jealousy of her relationship with Dean is what makes him realize he’s into her, and moments where he’s pining for Ginny tend to focus on that jealousy more than an actual appreciation of Ginny’s personality. The most important part of writing a convincing romance is making readers believe that these characters actually care about each other and want to spend time together, and it feels like maybe what you describe as JKR’s obsession with pining made her lose sight of that. What do you think?
We've also got jealousy as a motif in Harry/Cho and Severus/Lily. It is absolutely a trope she uses, a lot.
When I was trying to get my head around how JKR writes romance, the main thing that made it click for me was realizing that, to her - romance is inherently threatening. And/or embarrassing, overpowering, animalistic, dangerous. (thanks to @the-phoenix-heart for that line.)
Really, the Harry Potter books are kind of a romance-free zone. It is incredibly unusual to see a romantic couple, acting like a couple, on the page. We spend a lot of time with Arthur and Molly, and while they’re both pretty fleshed out as characters, we get almost nothing of their couple dynamic (and what we do get doesn’t seem all that positive…) The blocking tends to physically separate them - Molly isn’t at the World Cup or Harry’s hearing, Arthur is working overtime when Harry is at the Burrow, etc. This is a pattern: her romantic couples, of which there are not many, have a way of being in different rooms, on different side quests, one of them is mind-controlled, one of them is unconscious, it cuts to black right before Harry kisses Cho, and right after he kisses Ginny.
Ron/Hermione takes place mostly outside of Harry’s perspective, and Harry/Ginny takes place mostly out of *the reader's* perspective. It’s a lot of narration, a lot of “Harry could not help himself talking to Ginny, laughing with her, walking back from practice with her” and “[Harry] was supposedly finishing his Herbology homework but in reality reliving a particularly happy hour he had spent down by the lake with Ginny at lunchtime.” Like, I don’t know. I might have liked to see those scenes play out.
Bill/Fleur is probably her most successful couple (I mean, who doesn't like Bill and Fleur?) But even they almost never interact with each other. They talk about their relationship to other people, other people talk about them, but like… I’m just going to go through a rundown of every single time we see Bill and Fleur interact:
“’E is always so thoughtful,” purred Fleur adoringly, stroking Bill’s nose. Ginny mimed vomiting into her cereal behind Fleur. Harry choked over his cornflakes.
(Romance = embarrassing)
What if [Ron and Hermione] became like Bill and Fleur, and it became excruciatingly embarrassing to be in their presence, so that he was shut out for good?
(Romance = embarassing, threatening)
Most [of the people at Dumbledore’s funeral] Harry did not recognize, but a few he did, including (...) Bill supported by Fleur and followed by Fred and George
(put a pin in this one, I’m going to come back to it)
“Bah,” said Fleur [in Harry’s body], checking herself in the microwave door, “Bill, don’t look at me — I’m ’ideous.”
(I actually think this is kind of cute in context, but unfortunately JKR is being uncharitable to her hyper-femme characters again, and making a joke about woman-in-male-body, which unfortunately makes it less cute in the grand scheme of things)
“I’m taking Fleur on a thestral,” said Bill. “She’s not that fond of brooms.” Fleur walked over to stand beside him, giving him a soppy, slavish look that Harry hoped with all his heart would never appear on his face again.
(Romance = embarrassing)
“We saw [Mad-Eye die]” said Bill; Fleur nodded, tear tracks glittering on her cheeks...
(Not sure if this counts as them interacting, but they are at least next to each other)
“No,” said Bill at once, “I’ll do it, I’ll come.” “Where are you going?” said Tonks and Fleur together. “Mad-Eye’s body,” said Lupin. “We need to recover it.”
(this one doesn’t even frame them as a couple, since the teams have split into Bill and Lupin and Tonks and Fleur.)
“We can’t tell you what we’re doing,” said Harry flatly. “You’re in the Order, Bill, you know Dumbledore left us a mission. We’re not supposed to talk about it to anyone else.” Fleur made an impatient noise, but Bill did not look at her.”
(... does this imply that Fleur isn’t in the Order? Anyway, they’re married at this point, and kinda disagreeing a la Molly and Arthur)
[Griphook] continued to request trays of food in his room, like the still frail Ollivander, until Bill (following an angry outburst from Fleur) went upstairs to tell him that the arrangement could not continue.
(Another conflict, but hey, at least it sounds like they resolved it. We hear about their daughter Victoire in the epilogue, but this is the last time we see Bill and Fleur together.)
But, okay. Not putting romance in the Harry Potter books is a perfectly fine creative choice. JKR can absolutely decide she just wants to give other things more emotional weight. What clarified this for me was the Fantastic Beasts films and her adult literature (particularly the Cormoran Strike books.) In those, JKR is wanting to write romance. And yet....
In Fantastic Beasts, she can write the awkward getting-to-know-you pre-romance stuff, but the second Jacob and Queenie are actually a couple - he loses his memory, then he’s brainwashed, she’s with Grindelwald, they’re different plot lines that never intersect… and then they just get married at the end of Secrets of Dumbledore. So it’s not even a slow-burn, will-they-won’t-they thing. Tina and Newt get the same treatment, except their pre-romance getting-to-know-you beats are so subtle that a lot of people missed them completely. Then Tina's angry at Newt for a very silly misunderstanding… then in a separate plotline… and is only in the third film for two minutes at the end. People compare the structure of these films to Indiana Jones, but in those movies the love interest is actually hanging out with Indy the whole time. In the Cormoran Strike books, the romantic leads do spend time together, but they’ve also been doing a pining, bad timing, will they/won’t they back-and-forth thing for seven books. And they’re long books.
So okay. What’s going on. Why is this.
JK Rowling has been very public about the trauma she has from abusive relationships and sexual assault, and I’m afraid I do have to bring that up in a conversation about why she treats romance so negatively. More specifically - if I had to guess - I think she finds male attraction towards women threatening. (I’m sure we all remember Harry’s chest monster.)  I think she feels a little icky writing it, which is why when she does do it… it feels perfunctory, generic, repetitive, and also not the sort of thing that would come from a teenage boy. (Like when has a 14-year-old boy ever thought a girl was pretty because she had nice teeth. That’s such a straight girl compliment.) BUT, when she writes about the attractiveness of guys - it gets more specific, more nuanced, more interesting, and also a lot less uncomfortable. J.K. Rowling likes guys! She’s allowed.
But of course, she also tends to write male viewpoint characters, and I think this is why a lot of her guys (and Harry specifically) kinda read as queer to a lot of people. We’re told Harry is distracted by/attracted to Cho Chang… but is he though? Compared to the way “pretty boy” Cedric, or “sleek haired” Draco get under his skin?
I want to take a look at her adult romantic leads for a second. Because in Fantastic Beasts, she really did pull out all the stops to make Newt and Jacob as non-threatening as humanly possible. Newt is a gentle, pacifist, Doctor Dolittle-type conservationist who barely seems interested in women at all, and Jacob… is a Muggle baker. She pairs Newt with Tina, tough as nails American star auror. Jacob is with Queenie, who is constantly literally reading his mind. Which is an ability we’ve only seen with the most powerful wizards. These guys are not a threat to these ladies. In Queenie’s case, the power balance is tipped so insanely far in her direction that I’m a little bit worried for Jacob (and she does in fact, bewitch him into doing stuff.) I think JKR wrote her couples this way so any romance she wrote with them would also feel safe… and sadly I don’t think it worked. The most fleshed out couple dynamic we get is Dumbledore/Grindelwald, who have a coffee date and a duel in the third movie. But - that’s the one movie where she doesn’t have sole screenwriting credit, they’re exes, and they're also both GUYS, so she doesn’t have to worry about any kind of male/female power imbalance gunk, or put herself in the headspace of a guy being attracted to women.
Now I do want to talk about Cormoran Strike. Of all her non-threatening male love interests, this is the one who seems to work best for her. She’s stuck with him the longest, and it actually seems possible that we might get an actual romantic scene with him in the next book.
Here’s my theory. I think that when JKR was writing Goblet of Fire, and it came time to introduce the real Mad-Eye Moody - imprisoned in the bottom of his own trunk, weak, down a leg and an eye -  something clicked. Because that is someone who is both entirely masculine, and entirely safe, and that makes him the perfect romantic figure. And I absolutely think she grabbed that archetype when it came to writing Cormoran Strike.
Basically, this character just is Mad-Eye Moody, only 15(ish) years younger, and non-magical. Strike is an ex-military cop who now freelances. He’s older than his love interest, he’s been around the block a few times. He’s gruff, but careful and kind, world-weary and grizzled, extremely capable, principled, tough, and just sort of hyper aware of what’s going on around him. He is also a bigger guy with some access weight who is not “conventionally attractive” - and for JKR this is a feature, not a bug. If your female character is into someone who is not *~*~handsome~*~* that means they’re cool, deep, not like other girls. Viktor Krum is not conventionally attractive, and (after the werewolf attack) neither is Bill. In fact “he now bore a distinct resemblance to Mad-Eye Moody.” JKR likes Mad-Eye Moody.
And you better believe that Cormoran Strike has a broken nose and a missing leg, just like Mad-Eye Moody. Strike’s prosthetic leg comes up a *lot.* I think it’s telling that the loving interaction we see between Bill and Fleur is her physically supporting him at Dumbledore's funeral post werewolf attack, and the loving little wrist squeeze we get between Lucius and Narcissa is right before Lucius hands his wand over. Basically, JKR likes someone who is sexy and capable and has a lot of presence, but who you get to take care of, and who… can’t chase you. Doesn’t pose a threat. That's the fantasy.

in defence of ginny weasley (ft fleur delacour)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
never thought i would feel strongly enough about this topic to comment on it, but the ginny bashing in this fandom is just insane so i thought why the hell not. ginny seems to get hate for everything under the sun from being being a mary sue who can do no wrong in anyone’s eyes (meaning she’s boring and uninteresting as a character) to being a nasty bully responsible for hurting those around her (??? and they’re both completely contradictory statements btw). when the latter is brought up, ginny’s “terrible” mistreatment of fleur is always front and centre. ‘she’s nasty, she’s cruel, she is a jealous bully etc!’ and i just feel like we should put on our thinking caps and actually take a step back for a fucking second. people may disagree with me, but i think ginny’s reaction to fleur was totally understandable — and reminder, she is a TEENAGE girl, (not to mention both mrs weasley and hermione held fleur in the same regard but no one seems to focus on that side of things).
now in the books, we do see ginny mocking fleur, calling her ‘phlegm’ behind her back, imitating her gait and elegance, expressing her annoyance at her newfound presence in their lives.
let’s look at why she might have reacted that way. first of all, in general, we see that the w are a very humble and welcoming family; they don’t have much but what they do have, they are more than willing to share with others. their financial circumstance plays a massive role in how the characters in the wea clan react and interact with others (as seen with their refusal to accept money from harry etc). their sense of pride in that regard is also quite prevalent. we see that when harry first goes to the burrow, ron is slightly embarrassed by his home, painfully aware of the way many people in the wizarding community view/judge them. when harry goes on to say it’s best place he’s ever seen, we immediately see how touched ron is. ginny is the same in that sense — embarrassed that she has second hand robes & books etc, but at the same time she, like ron, is fiercely protective of what they do have, and what they as a family stand for. they are also very protective of people they love inside and outside of the family (see, ron with ginny, mrs weasleys with all of them etc).
this is relevant because one of the reasons ginny and in turn mrs weasley, have a problem with fleur is the way she talks to them. despite them inviting her into their home, fleur makes her distaste clear even if it is in small ways. she says it’s boring at their house as there’s nothing to do, she often talks disparagingly about how things are done in the weasley household, she loudly mocks celestina warbeck (who mrs weasley loves to play at christmas time) and insults her, she speaks badly about tonks several times etc. her words and mannerisms are also viewed by some (ginny etc) as very pretentious and arrogant — also rather posh, a sign of her family’s wealth (which might have been a sore spot for ginny also).
now don’t get me wrong. i love fleur as a character. i think she’s really cool, charming and brave, and i wish we got to see more of her honestly!! i think she makes a lovely contrast to the other younger characters, and i think she undergoes some nice character development in the books we do see her in. it’s also very clear to me, that when she acts the way she does, it is never out of malice or cruelty— it comes from a place of openness and honesty — which often comes across as quite blunt. it’s a cultural disconnect in many ways; when she inadvertently insults people throughout the books, i think it’s pretty obvious she isn’t trying to hurt anyone’s feelings. but i also think it’s obvious how this attitude might annoy those around her.
calling ginny is a big bad bully for disliking fleur (in the beginning), when her behaviour towards the weasley family would make anyone a bit frustrated, is a bit far. not to mention, her individual treatment of ginny is understandably annoying - ginny complains that fleur is very condescending when speaking to her (‘you’d think i were about three!’).
there’s also the fact that ginny is bill’s little sister. he is her favourite brother (as seen from the way she respects him and his opinions, looks up to him - she wanted to go to hogwarts ever since bill went!). ginny having a reaction to her brother’s new girlfriend is very normal - he’s her big brother! all his attention is now on his new girlfriend - who ginny finds to be full of herself, patronising & annoying. part of her may also be worried that fleur will end up breaking his heart in the end — because she’s protective of her brother.
add the fact that her brother and old crush and basically every man ever is drawn to her because of her godly beauty (as a part veela), her and bill’s wont to shower each other in public displays of affection (who wants to see their brother doing this!?) and the fact that ginny always gotten along with tonks (the person her and molly had in mind for bill’s future partner) has always treated her kindly and as an equal, and therefore would much prefer as a sister-in-law — it’s not that surprising that ginny feels the way she does towards fleur.
nevertheless, do i think this is something ginny would grow out of? yes, of course. we already see changes in their relationship in the final book. besides, a lot of this stuff is surface level, as ginny and fleur don’t know all that much about each other — i think fleur’s love for bill (especially shown in the hospital wing after he’s been attacked by greyback) definitely changes the way ginny regards her. i also like to think that they grew closer as they got older, as with age comes maturity, and with maturity comes understanding. i also feel that fleur was someone who really stepped up when it came to supporting the weasleys after fred’s death, something that ginny would have appreciated. i see them having a nice relationship later in life.
ANYWAY, this was an exceedingly long rant for which i apologise but i have often seen people talk about how nasty ginny is to fleur, and i think it’s so unfair to not look at the context which leads to her being a little frustrated at her future sister in law. plus, she is allowed to dislike someone who she does not get along with and who she finds unpleasant to be around. we all have people like that in our lives but god forbid ginny does…not to mention, ginny is never openly rude to her EVER, and she’s allowed to voice her frustrations to her friends/family. the fact people call her an outright bully for this is just insane.
people on here will defend so many other dubious characters but the second a teenage character with good intentions makes a mistake / doesn’t act perfectly (i.e ron, ginny), they are suddenly the epitome of evil in human form, i mean get a grip, honestly. also one last quick thing(!!!), i do note some people blame jkr for writing her female characters this way, as we’ve seen the way she seems to frown upon conventional/typical displays of femininity (lavender and parvati being seen as ‘silly’ girls with frivolous thoughts, cho chang as overly emotional - despite having a very rational reaction to the death of her boyfriend, fleur as overly feminine and therefore less serious/intelligent). her heroines are women who often conceal or discard these more feminine traits — and i will say that despite loving these characters very much, i do think some more nuance here, could have been very beneficial to the story, and to the message being sent to young female/female identifying readers. there is strength in femininity, and rejecting feminine traits does not make you more or less a person.
okay, rant over. if you actually got to the end, bless you, if not — well, that’s totally fair (lol). also please don’t kill me in the comment section if you disagree. this is just my two cents. ok that’s all.

The Weasley Family Spouses - Which Weasley is the hottest?
(bill x fleur, percy x oliver, fred x angelina, george x lee, ron x hermione, ginny x harry)
the six weasley spouses were asked to rate all the weasley siblings from most attractive to least. here are the responses:
Fleur
#1 bill - hubby!!! so respectful and sweet and loving, but also so fiery! that hair really gets her going... she had thought his scars were hot even before greyback happened, and he is no less attractive now!
#2 percy - a gentleman, treats her with respect. learnt french to properly communicate with her! he said he'd always wanted to learn another language and when he heard bill was marrying a french girl, it was the perfect opportunity to learn. what a shame that he's gay.
#3 charlie - also respectful. asks interesting questions and always willing to talk. not bad-looking.
#4 fred and george - also respectful. too caught up in themselves to really give her time.
#5 ron and ginny - no.
Oliver
#1 percy - he is the BEST. he is intelligent i mean sure he is academically smart but he's also just intrinsically smart and really thoughtful and caring and sweet and— (cut off before he could go into a full blown rant)
#2 charlie - attractive, great at quidditch. he had a crush on charlie when he was young.
#3 bill and ginny - also attractive and great at quidditch. they overwhelm him a bit.
#4 ron - he doesn't know the kid very well but he must be cool since harry likes him, right?
#5 fred and george - ANNOYING. (he is biased because the twins don't treat percy well)
Angelina
#1 fred - well, obviously. but tell him she put george on top just to fuck with him.
#2 ginny - she's not gay, but...
#3 george - physically attractive, too similar but also too different from fred for her to give him a proper number. either way, he is gay, so.
#4 bill - very cool, nice long hair. she wants to convince fred to grow out his hair too.
#5 ron, percy, and charlie - all physically attractive in their own ways. she doesn't know them well enough to comment further.
Lee
#1 george - very very cute. nice fluffy red hair and pretty hazel eyes. just... very cute.
#2 bill - cool as hell.
#3 charlie and ginny - also cool as hell, just a bit less.
#4 percy - he needs to loosen up a bit. he might know just the thing to get percy to do that, but he's not single.
#5 ron - a bit cool actually, but he's always preferred his men more muscly than tall.
#6 fred - a gremlin.
Hermione
(the only contestant who protested at first, but was eventually persuaded)
#1 ron - very thoughtful and caring, he's brave and loyal and so wonderfully smart and cute! and he can cook!!!
#2 ginny - again, she's not gay, but...
#3 everyone else - more like brothers to her than anything. she does appreciate percy's smarts and the twins' charms, but they're just not ron.
Harry
#1 ginny - she's cool, she's hot, she's wonderfully fiery and he could spend all day mooning after her.
#2 ron - ron's his best mate so he has a moral obligation to put him high on the least. (but he IS very sweet and caring and, well, if hermione broke up with him...)
#3 bill - he isn't gay, but...
#4 fred and george - very fun to be around.
#5 percy - he's a nerd but also there's something endearing about him.
#6 charlie - physically very attractive. refused to comment further.

Geranium sanguineum (crane's-bill geranium)
Even on a cloudy day this crane's-bill geranium is a beautiful flower. But as the sun sinks slowly in the west, it backlights the geraniums and something magical happens.

i don't think the hp next gen fandom talks enough about how percy's kids would be treated differently just because they're his.
like, the kids don't know why. neither do their cousins. they're just used to weird looks from their aunt and uncles and grandparents. they're used to fewer photos of their father and more jokes thrown in his direction. they're used to traits they share with percy being seen as a negative.
and maybe it's subtle. maybe their presents at christmas and birthdays aren't as personalized as the presents their cousins get, and maybe they don't notice at first because their parents always try to give them presents they'll definitely love. maybe at family get-togethers, every cousin has one of their favorite sweets made but percy's kids were never asked. but they don't notice this, either, because percy makes a big deal of them baking their favorites together when they get home.
no matter the way you look at it, with percy and audrey or percy and oliver, with percy in gryffindor or slytherin, his kids would've been treated differently by their family.
