Am I oversexualizing TED?
As a member of the executive board of my university's TEDx club, I've been having an issue recently. If you don't know the TED hierarchy, here are the basics: TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is the company that runs the events in which qualified speakers give TED Talks. TED, as an organization, oversees TEDx, a massive group of smaller independent organizations that are typically branded either by the location they reside in (TEDxPortland, TEDxMidAtlantic, TEDxAustin) or the university/college they're a club in (TEDxUniversityofNevada, TEDxOxford, TEDxBardCollege). The big difference is that the city/region ones are (presumably) better-held-together because it's a bunch of serious adults running them as opposed to a bunch of college students. We absolutely make due and we put on amazing events, but we're just a different chain of command internally. Here's where my problem comes in:
We, like all other TEDx groups out there (3000 TEDx shows are put on each year) report to the main TED organization. They designate all of the rules and regulations (they have an entire section about the kerning the font of your individual logo is allowed to have, like they make 100% sure you fit the brand for your licensed events) that we have to follow in order to be licensed. The club president always refers to the main organization as "Big TED", which I find fun, but it wasn't my first idea. I always want to refer to it as "Daddy TED". This is my immediate gut instinct. I don't want to slip up in front of the rest of the board (or, god forbid, the club body or event audience), but it's just so natural! It makes sense.
Like, which of the following sentences makes more sense?
A) Why is Big TED being so strict about the font we have to use?
B) Why is Daddy TED being so strict about the font we have to use?
See?! See what I deal with absolutely all the time?! It just flows better.

Walking into a yarn shop like it's an art museum. Admiring all the colorways and textures of the various skeins. Nodding my head at the tasteful displays of handmade items by the local knitting/crochet group to demonstrate the different yarn brands. Talking to the owner to learn more about the local fiber art scene and learning about different dyers, and crafters in the area that I would have never found on the internet. Buying one too many skeins to continue my pursuit of creating beautiful things to bring joy into mine and others lives. My way of paying homage to this wonderland of fibrous beauty.
Fucking glorious.
