The Patakis Week Day 2!

I’m honestly so proud of this one, I just finished it today so I can post it in time. (I really don’t wanna fall behind like Inktober ☠️)

Following the prompts, here is the scenario:

Arnold and Helga are volunteering at PS 118 for their summer program that is essentially just a glorified baby sitting gig, which is why they’re letting high schoolers do it in the first place. We all know why Helga took the job, and it has nothing to do with kids. So when a young student in her cluster, Daisy May*, becomes overly attached, Helga exploits Daisy’s love of pudding. Arnold has been watching Helga too, and notices that she’s up to her old tricks. “You can’t just sit the kid in a corner with a pudding cup, how is she going to learn?”

“That’s how Bob did it and I turned out fine”

“Okay Helga, just be big enough to clean the mess”

*Fun fact: Daisy May is the name of the love interest in Lil Abner, where Arnold’s pet pig gets his namesake. Daisy May pursues the main character even though he shows no interest. It’s a Helga-ception.(credit to my bf for that)

One thing that I LOVE about Helga is her tenacity to break the rules (law😝) for the sake of her personal mission. Since it’s just a blurb for a picture, I didn’t get too detailed with the plot but I’d like to think that Helga was getting up to something Football related 😏

I wanted her face to look frustrated for being caught out, but also totally elated that Arnold was paying attention to her 😍

Since I’m using my Tumblr as more of an “art diary”, I’d like to include some more info behind what went into this piece:

Much like Inktober, I’m using this challenge to learn more about Procreate, experiment with brushes and figure out what’s “right” for me.

To be frank, it has been a mildly frustrating experience internally because I already know that my weakness is color. Digital painting and traditional are just not the same, they don’t work the same (to me anyway). The interface of Procreate is so different from Photoshop too, finding and remembering to use tools isn’t a simple transition, either. It makes me self conscious of my art, even though I’ve gone to art school, and it throws me off to have to stop and Google stuff. But! I think with this piece, I’m FINALLY in a good groove of how I want my art to look and how to get there.

TLDR; I cry bc the lesson I refuse to learn is that you never stop learning 🙃

PS - skipping Patakis Week Day 3 to put the amount of effort and time that I want to put into Day 4’s prompt, however, I’ll still post something fun! 💜

Mmm... not to harsh on anyone's vibe, ship what you ship, but I can't help but point out a few huge differences between Helga Pataki and Draco Malfoy, just because the idea fascinates me:

As discussed in episodes like Helga on the Couch, Helga acts the way she does because she gets no attention at home. She lives in the shadow of her "perfect" older sister, her parents are caught up in their own personality flaws (her father's ego, her mother's absentmindedness/implied alcoholism). In turn, Helga has no respect for her parents - she calls them by their first names and regularly insults them.

Arnold was the first person to be nice to her, but she's so afraid to be vulnerable her affection comes out as aggression. This aggression spills over into every other relationship she has.

Draco is the opposite. Draco is beloved by his parents. He is the only child in a family that prides itself on carrying on bloodlines. Sure, the ideals Draco was raised with were not good ones, much like with Helga's family, but he was never neglected. And he never disrespected his parents - if anything, he idolized them too much. Narcissa and Lucius both eventually betrayed Voldemort for Draco, too, that didn't come out of nowhere. There's a reason Harry compares Draco to his cousin Dudley when they first meet. Draco is spoiled, and that is the major impetus for all his actions, including against Harry.

Likewise, Harry was the first person to snub Draco rather than the first to notice him. Draco walks around expecting to be respected for his pure-blood status, expecting someone powerful enough to defeat a Dark Lord would of course want to be his friend, and being sorely mistaken, embarrassed, in front of a Weasley no less. He acts from a sense of wounded pride more than a place of neglect

Though both have a fear of being embarassed and vulnerable, where Helga acts because she doesn't want to be more vulnerable than she already is, trying to make up for a major inferiority complex, Draco acts because he has never been vulnerable. Not really. Not until Half-Blood Prince, when he starts to see the reality of the ideals he's been brought up with. He truly believes he is better than everyone else. and anyone who challenges him on this faces his wrath.

Another difference? Draco has lackeys to do the dirty work for him. Or he threatens to get his father involved. Helga? Helga's self-reliant - she will take you down herself Xd

However, there is one big way they are similar that needs to be stated:

Their dads.

Lucius and Big Bob are both sort of blowhards, obsessed with reputation and looking good. Where Bob puts nearly every ounce of his affection into his business, Lucius cultivates his position at the Ministry and on the school board, both unafraid to throw their weight around when they don't get their way. Helga and Draco are both affected by their dads, mirroring their toxic behavior in ways that inadvertently hurt them. But while I think Helga recognizes this on some level, but doesn't know how else to handle things, even sometimes resisting her dad's beliefs and actions, Draco has a total blind spot until late in the series, completely buying his father's ideology. Fanfics may say otherwise, but there is little in-text evidence Draco didn't 100% buy into the idea his family was superior.

So while there are some marked similarities between them, Draco and Helga are not the same character. But the parallels of these two 90s bullies are fascinating nonetheless, especially since both showed potential for change in different ways.

Now the version of Draco that appears in the AVPM series? THAT'S an entirely different story.

Excuse me but WHY are Helga Pataki and Draco Malfoy literally (almost) the same person?!?!

I never watched Hey Arnold growing up, (I don’t think they showed in the UK?) But my goodness let me tell you– when I discovered this character I was screaming!!!! My drarry-filled brain exploded!

So yes. This is headcanon now. Thank you.

Meet a another Spy vs. Spy civilian OC of mine. This is Randolph Xavier Solomon, aka Randy. Besides Phil, Randy is another one of Black Spy and White Spy's neighbors. Randy is actually about the same age as Black, White, and Phil and has known them for years, ever since they (Randy, Black, White, and Phil) were actually still in diapers, most likely around toddlerhood (of course, that's a story I'll be saving for part of my headcanon backstory in the future). Anyhow, Randy is an ugly, trashy construction worker who often puts his neighbors through hell on a regular basis. His callous, destructive, cruel antics have gotten him in trouble with the law on countless occasions. Other than that, he also enjoys roasting his neighbors and is incredibly lazy; on most days he tends to really just sit around and troll his neighbors behind their backs, all while reading inappropriate magazines and chugging down liquor in the process. He may be mean and cruel 99% of the time, but there's that 1% where he could be a generally good person deep down inside. His sadistic, deranged demeanor may be due to how he was raised, but I'll be saving that story for a different day.

The long nose I gave him was inspired by Antonio Prohias' habit of exaggerating the length of a person's nose, such as El Hombre Siniestro and Erizo, prior to him creating the spies. As for the unibrow, that was inspired by that of Helga Pataki, Harold Berman, Big Bob Pataki, Torvald, Stoop Kid, etc, etc, from Hey Arnold. I give credit to Antonio Prohias and Craig Bartlett for the inspiration for the long nose and unibrow, respectively.
