Diabetic Steve who is at a Dairy Queen with Robin after he went with her to an all girl punk band that’s she’s been wanting to see for years. Steve had been feeling weird all day but he didn’t want to bail at the last second because he knew that Robin would just cancel everything to take care of Steve.
(Steve would do the same for her).
Steve plops down into a booth while Robin goes to order them food. He pulls out his pod and winces when he sees his glucose level.
64 and going down. Not a good sign.
Just to be sure he pricks his finger and holy shit, he’s actually at 43. It’s at that moment, when Steve is wiping his finger with the alcohol wipe, that his phone decides to loudly beep to alert him that, “hey you’re crashing pretty hard and fast— take care of it soon!!”
Steve is rifling through his bag while Robin is already trying to rush their orders.
“Shit,” Steve mumbles to himself. “I’m out of fucking juice.”
His hands start to shake and Robin begins to freak out. Steve is always so in control of his diabetes, she’s never seen him like this. So, Robin does what any other person would do and grabs the largest blizzard she has ever seen on the online orders tray and runs over to her best friend.
“Here! Have this, I’m going to try to get you some apple juice!”
Steve just nods his head and slowly spoons some of it into his mouth.
“This tastes like shit, by the way.”
“You’re welcome, dingus. Now shut up and eat.”
The worker behind the counter comes over and starts talking to Robin after she sits in front of Steve. Steve can’t really make anything out right now since he’s trying to focus on making his hands work. But, he thinks he hears the mention of calling 911 and an ambulance.
Time passes a little slower after that. Steve somehow manages to get down enough of the ice cream that he is slowly rising again.
57 after he pricked. Thank god.
It’s at that moment that Eddie Munson, lead singer of Corroded Coffin, walks in. He went to his best friend’s, Chrissy’s, show and needed a pick-me-up after helping her lug all of her equipment back into their vehicle.
He goes over to the online orders tray and it’s empty. He doesn’t really mind waiting. He walks over to the counter and sees that the worker is extremely frantic as she sorts some shit out.
“Hey,” he starts, his fingers tapping the fake granite counter top. “Just checking, I’m here to pick up an order for Edmundo and it’s not on the tray. Do you know when it will be ready?” He flashes an awkward smile and the worker just points to the table behind him.
“We’re working on it. Your nightmare of a blizzard was needed for something else. Give us five minutes.”
Eddie nods and slowly turned around, where he sees the most gorgeous man eating his blizzard. Reluctantly, he might add. The man has on a light pink t-shirt and brown corduroy pants, thick lensed glasses sliding down his nose. The woman across from him was clad in funky colors and had a dirty blonde bob. She was talking extremely fast and gesturing with her hands a bunch.
Chrissy would love her.
He walked over and tapped the man on the shoulder.
“How’s my blizzard?”
He slowly looks up and Eddie is met with honey brown eyes and beauty marks for days. A straight nose and an angular jawline. Jesus Christ.
The woman looks like she’s about to say something, but the guy beats her to it. “It tastes like if a unicorn threw up in my mouth, but it prevented me from passing out. So… thanks.” He smiles. “I’m Steve.”
Eddie needs to become Steve’s husband immediately.
“And I’m in love.” He pauses and then sees the look of glee on Steve’s face. “EDDIE. My name is Eddie.”
“It’s nice to meet you Eddie. Are you free tomorrow?”

You may notice I frequently comment on the assumptions people make about animal facilities based on their branding. Frequently, people assume accredited facilities are inherently better for animals than unaccredited facilities, or assume sanctuaries are inherently more moral / better at caring for their animals than zoos.
I want to show you an example of why I am always, always skeptical of these assumptions.
If you’re in the California area, you might have heard about Hank the Tank - who is actually a Henrietta, btw - the 500 pound nuisance bear from Lake Tahoe who broke into 21 homes in search of food. She was recently captured by wildlife officials and moved to a sanctuary in Colorado. The Wild Animal Sanctuary has three main facilities, two in Colorado and one in TX. To give you some context, it’s the biggest carnivore sanctuary in the country - they advertise somewhere between 300-500 animals, mostly large carnivores, between their properties. It’s where most of the Tiger King cats went. It’s PETA’s preferred placement for confiscated exotic animals. So, obviously, it’s got to be great, right? Except… take a look at what they posted about Henrietta’s arrival.
Tumblr media
Here’s their post about Henrietta’s arrival at the Refuge, the large facility in Colorado that isn’t open to the public. Let’s take a closer look at that food trough…
Tumblr media
What do we see here? An entire rotisserie chicken that is either blackened or highly seasoned, and a whole ham. Maybe a second chicken underneath the pile, I can’t quite tell. The sanctuary gets the majority of their bear food donated from groceries stores once it’s past the sell-by date, so we know those are older meats and they’re full of a ton of salt. Then, for fruit and veg, there’s a cantaloupe, mango, corn, avocado, grapes, and apples. Maybe a pepper or two, it’s hard to tell. That’s a lot of sugar and not a lot of fiber or roughage.
But… on top of it and to the right… are those Twizzlers?
Yes.
The sanctuary confirmed on Facebook that they fed this recently rescued obese bear what looks like almost an entire pack of Twizzlers.
Tumblr media
I don’t know of any world in which it’s appropriate to feed candy to a bear. Maybe a piece or two as a really high value reinforcer for hard behaviors (that isn’t relevant here, it’s openly against this sanctuary’s ethos to do any husbandry or medical training). An entire pack of Twizzlers is just appalling. But it’s not uncommon for this facility! I have a book written about their operations and animal care (that I bought at their gift shop this spring) which openly discusses how the bears get fed bread, doughnuts, marshmallows, and all sorts of incredibly unhealthy food that comes in with the grocery donations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But hey, this is apparently fine for the bears, according to the sanctuary’s founder. He was quoted in that same book as saying “Bears are the only animal I know of that can eat insane amounts of sugar and it never hurts them. It does not hurt their organs. They do not get clogged arteries. They do not have high blood pressure. In the wild they eat all these sweet berries in the fall, and they convert sugar to fat… so the more sugar they get the better… we would all love to have a system like that!”
Now while it’s true that bears have physiological adaptations that modulate their insulin production and sensitivity in ways that appear to prevent them from from developing diabetes, that does’t mean it’s healthy for them to regularly eat processed carbohydrates, sugar, and general junk food. And remember - Henrietta gained her fame because of how incredibly overweight she already is, and because she was seeking out human food, According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, a healthy weight for a normal adult black bear is between 100-300 pounds. So, obviously, the best thing to do is… continue to feed her candy.
Then, later on in the book, it details how they have to bribe a camel to sit tight for a regular medical examination (since they don’t train for medical behaviors) by letting him drink a can of Mountain Dew each time.
Tumblr media
If a zoo was known publicly to be feeding their animals Mountain Dew or a couple Twizzlers - even just once, on a rare occasion - they’d be eviscerated in the media and by public opinion. But feeding out inappropriate junk food appears to be a pretty common practice at this place, and it just goes unscrutinized because everyone assumes sanctuaries are inherently better for animals.
So, long story short, never make assumptions about the quality of a facility based on it’s branding or accreditation. (TWAS is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries). If you have concerns about the ethics or practices of a facility, always try to put your preconceptions aside, go and see for yourself, and think critically about what you see and what you’re told.

Sorry to drop a hella irl-political question on your mostly webcomic blog, but have you/any of the OSP gang heard of/been participating in the week-long strike for palestine that's been (presumably) all over tumblr/the internet?
For some background info: Following the attack on Oct. 7th by the hamas militant group (a terrorist org. Or resistance group, depending who you ask), the state of israel (which is practically a mass colonial settlement on Palestinian land since '48) has taken the attack as an excuse to indiscriminately bomb the homes of thousands if not millions of homes while forcebly displacing almost all of the ~2.3 million people crammed in the gaza strip with no escape.
'Israel' has also tightened it's blockade on the strip of land such that a growing majority of people there are experiencing catastrophic starvation, disease from sewage-infested drinking water (as water aid is too scarce). Soon even deaths by preventable causes such as diabetes will occur since insulin pens for children have been blocked from entering by israel, who controls gaza's borders, water, power, food supplies, and shoreline. Civilians in Gaza are very frequently and indiscriminately killed often in places they were told were safe zones to evacuate to. It's agreed upon by both experts and laymen worldwide that what is happening (and has BEEN happening before Oct.7th) is nothing short of genocide.
In the occupied Palestinian west bank, where there is no hamas whatsoever to use as an excuse, Palestinians are still arrested without a fair trial for years, abused, prevented from using certain roads, shot, and often straight-up have their houses stolen by armed or military-backed israeli settlers (many of whom have no ancestral connection to the land at all) in a system often compared to or outright stated to be apartheid.
Very recently, a journalist in Gaza by the name of Bisan Owda called for a strike from January 21st to January 28th. The conditions of the strike can be paraphrased as:
Cease all unnecessary purchases or payments, avoid generating ad revenue when possible
Do not go to work or school if you can possibly avoid it
Pay for things only in cash if you must
Use social media exclusively to flood the internet with palestinian voices and resources about the ongoing genocide against the palestinian people
Attend protests if you can
Be visible.
It's the 26th now, but joining late would be far better than to not join at all and stay silent.
I figured I'd ask since since OSP has covered various topics about history and/or politics and we're kinda watching some awful history unfolding, the kind of history where neutrality doesn't really work and a side needs to be taken.
Opinions? (Sorry if I'm coming across as condescending! I just really want my favorite blogs to be aware and take a stance rather than being silent hhhghf)
Okay, here's my answer.
OSP has been supporting calls for a ceasefire for months, and we were fundraising in direct support of it via Doctors Without Borders all through November and December. Total, we raised over $30,000. If we include the UNICEF fundraiser we ran on the Spider-Man streams, the total is over $40,000.
During our charity livestreams, we have made our positions clear – we support a ceasefire, Israel is perpetuating settler-colonialist violence and has been for decades, Hamas is a terrorist organization that endangers Israelis and Palestinians alike, the innocent people of both Palestine and Israel deserve safety and peace. We concluded that the best thing we could do under the circumstances was empower those who are in a real position to actually help by providing funding for their work. We believe this is significantly more beneficial than adding Another Angry Internet Post to the pile of insular outrage on Internet Land. Fundraising for the organizations with boots on the ground feels like it does a lot more good than being loud online for the benefit of other online people.
This is not the first time I've heard reference to the strike, but it is the first time I've seen the parameters of the strike laid out, which to me indicates that it wasn't spread as widely or effectively as it could've been.
I understand and appreciate why you sent this ask, but your premise worries me. I know this may surprise and startle us denizens of the internet, but being extremely loud on the internet is not the only or the most effective form of activism, and people not being extremely loud on the internet with every account they have is not the same thing as silent complicity in war crimes, and people acting like those two things are the same thing has been unbelievably frustrating to watch.
If we act like everything is a binary moral choice between "scream your loudest, most angry opinions online every time you feel angry about them" and "not doing that is literally the same thing as participating in genocide", we are creating a very strong pressure to flood the internet with our angriest, most unformed thoughts, lest we be branded as complicit in war crimes. Social media sites live and die on engagement, hence why twitter has rapidly trended towards doomscrolling and encouraging inflammatory clickbait - angry shouty people are traffic and traffic is money. The cynical part of me is utterly unsurprised that social media encourages the idea that the only true form of activism is being loud on social media.
It sounds like you had the feeling that sending me this ask was weird and a boundary overstep, and you were correct. My platform is not world-changing or in any way politically powerful beyond our ability to create charity fundraisers for causes we believe in, and we are doing what we can to help in the tiny ways that we can from halfway across the world, from a position of absolutely zero political weight beyond emailing our representatives. You are just asking me to also shout about it online loudly enough that I measure up to an artificial loudness metric, because my existing shouting was not already loud or omnipresent enough.
You are not entitled to know every thought in my head or every action I take in my life. I am not online to perform outrage and live up to an arbitrary moral standard of Shouting Enough. I am especially not online on my fantasy webcomic blog to do those things. Please understand that what you see of me is what I choose to share, and I am under no obligation, moral or otherwise, to share more.

oral hygiene practices
maintaining healthy teeth and gums is crucial for many reasons:
prevents tooth decay and gum disease. regular brushing and flossing remove plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease if not properly managed.
maintains fresh breath. poor oral hygiene can cause bad breath (halitosis). brushing your teeth, and tongue, and using mouthwash can help keep your breath fresh.
reduces the risk of systemic diseases. there is a strong link between oral health and overall health. poor oral hygiene can contribute to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections.
saves money. preventive care is often less expensive than treating dental problems. regular check-ups and cleanings can help catch issues early before they become more serious and costly.
so, let's look at some key practices to help maintain your smile.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ brush your teeth twice a day. use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. brush for at least two minutes, making sure to clean all surfaces of your teeth.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ floss daily. flossing helps remove plaque and food particles between your teeth and under the gumline where your toothbrush can’t reach.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ use mouthwash. an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash can help reduce plaque, prevent cavities, and freshen your breath.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ maintain a healthy diet. limit sugary foods and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay. eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can support overall oral health.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ stay hydrated. drinking plenty of water, especially fluoridated tap water, helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ avoid tobacco products. smoking and chewing tobacco can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ replace your toothbrush regularly. change it over every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ visit your dentist regularly. regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are essential for maintaining oral health and catching any issues early.
i know that i am only reinforcing what your dentist is already telling you - but my purpose is to provide easy information and further reading resources that may teach you something new. by incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy.
unfortunately, i know many people who ignore simple health facts (for a multitude of reasons). but this is not the way! looking after your health and your body is so important!

When it comes to health, food plays an important role. A balanced diet is essential for overall well-being and can help prevent or reduce the risk of developing certain diseases. Eating a variety of healthy foods can help provide your body with the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients it needs to stay strong and healthy. For instance, people who eat plenty of fruits and vegetables are less likely to develop heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer. On the other hand, unhealthy diets high in processed foods and sugar can increase your risk for these conditions. It’s important to choose nutritious foods that you enjoy and that will help keep you feeling your best.

When Swiss cardiologist Thomas F. Lüscher attended an international symposium in Turin, Italy, last summer, he encountered an unusual “attendee:” Suzanne, Chat GPT’s medical “assistant.” Suzanne’s developers were eager to demonstrate to the specialists how well their medical chatbot worked, and they asked the cardiologists to test her.
An Italian cardiology professor told the chatbot about the case of a 27-year-old patient who was taken to his clinic in unstable condition. The patient had a massive fever and drastically increased inflammation markers. Without hesitation, Suzanne diagnosed adult-onset Still’s disease. “I almost fell off my chair because she was right,” Lüscher remembers. “This is a very rare autoinflammatory disease that even seasoned cardiologists don’t always consider.”
Lüscher — director of research, education and development and consultant cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital Trust and Imperial College London and director of the Center for Molecular Cardiology at the University of Zürich, Switzerland — is convinced that artificial intelligence is making cardiovascular medicine more accurate and effective. “AI is not only the future, but it is already here,” he says. “AI and machine learning are particularly accurate in image analysis, and imaging plays an outsize role in cardiology. AI is able to see what we don’t see. That’s impressive.”
At the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, for instance, his team relies on AI to calculate the volume of heart chambers in MRIs, an indication of heart health. “If you calculate this manually, you need about half an hour,” Lüscher says. “AI does it in a second.”
AI-Assisted Medicine
Few patients are aware of how significantly AI is already determining their health care. The Washington Post tracks the start of the boom of artificial intelligence in health care to 2018. That’s when the Food and Drug Administration approved the IDx-DR, the first independent AI-based diagnostic tool, which is used to screen for diabetic retinopathy. Today, according to the Post, the FDA has approved nearly 700 artificial intelligence and machine learning-enabled medical devices.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is considered the worldwide leader in implementing AI for cardiovascular care, not least because it can train its algorithms with the (anonymized) data of more than seven million electrocardiograms (ECG). “Every time a patient undergoes an ECG, various algorithms that are based on AI show us on the screen which diagnoses to consider and which further tests are recommended,” says Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, director of the Mayo Clinic’s Cardiovascular Health Clinic. “The AI takes into account all the factors known about the patient, whether his potassium is high, etc. For example, we have an AI-based program that calculates the biological age of a person. If the person in front of me is [calculated to have a biological age] 10 years older than his birth age, I can probe further. Are there stressors that burden him?”
Examples where AI makes a sizable difference at the Mayo Clinic include screening ECGs to detect specific heart diseases, such as ventricular dysfunction or atrial fibrillation, earlier and more reliably than the human eye. These conditions are best treated early, but without AI, the symptoms are largely invisible in ECGs until later, when they have already progressed further...
Antioniades’ team at the University of Oxford’s Radcliffe Department of Medicine analyzed data from over 250,000 patients who underwent cardiac CT scans in eight British hospitals. “Eighty-two percent of the patients who presented with chest pain had CT scans that came back as completely normal and were sent home because doctors saw no indication for a heart disease,” Antioniades says. “Yet two-thirds of them had an increased risk to suffer a heart attack within the next 10 years.” In a world-first pilot, his team developed an AI tool that detects inflammatory changes in the fatty tissues surrounding the arteries. These changes are not visible to the human eye. But after training on thousands of CT scans, AI learned to detect them and predict the risk of heart attacks. “We had a phase where specialists read the scans and we compared their diagnosis with the AI’s,” Antioniades explains. “AI was always right.” These results led to doctors changing the treatment plans for hundreds of patients. “The key is that we can treat the inflammatory changes early and prevent heart attacks,” according to Antioniades.
The British National Health Service (NHS) has approved the AI tool, and it is now used in five public hospitals. “We hope that it will soon be used everywhere because it can help prevent thousands of heart attacks every year,” Antioniades says. A startup at Oxford University offers a service that enables other clinics to send their CT scans in for analysis with Oxford’s AI tool.
Similarly, physician-scientists at the Smidt Heart Institute and the Division of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles use AI to analyze echograms. They created an algorithm that can effectively identify and distinguish between two life-threatening heart conditions that are easy to overlook: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and cardiac amyloidosis. “These two heart conditions are challenging for even expert cardiologists to accurately identify, and so patients often go on for years to decades before receiving a correct diagnosis,” David Ouyang, cardiologist at the Smidt Heart Institute, said in a press release. “This is a machine-beats-man situation. AI makes the sonographer work faster and more efficiently, and it doesn’t change the patient experience. It’s a triple win.”
Current Issues with AI Medicine
However, using artificial intelligence in clinical settings has disadvantages, too. “Suzanne has no empathy,” Lüscher says about his experience with Chat GPT. “Her responses have to be verified by a doctor. She even says that after every diagnosis, and has to, for legal reasons.”
Also, an algorithm is only as accurate as the information with which it was trained. Lüscher and his team cured an AI tool of a massive deficit: Women’s risk for heart attacks wasn’t reliably evaluated because the AI had mainly been fed with data from male patients. “For women, heart attacks are more often fatal than for men,” Lüscher says. “Women also usually come to the clinic later. All these factors have implications.” Therefore, his team developed a more realistic AI prognosis that improves the treatment of female patients. “We adapted it with machine learning and it now works for women and men,” Lüscher explains. “You have to make sure the cohorts are large enough and have been evaluated independently so that the algorithms work for different groups of patients and in different countries.” His team made the improved algorithm available online so other hospitals can use it too...
[Lopez-Jimenez at the Mayo Clinic] tells his colleagues and patients that the reliability of AI tools currently lies at 75 to 93 percent, depending on the specific diagnosis. “Compare that with a mammogram that detects breast tumors with an accuracy of 85 percent,” Lopez-Jimenez says. “But because it’s AI, people expect 100 percent. That simply does not exist in medicine.”
And of course, another challenge is that few people have the resources and good fortune to become patients at the world’s most renowned clinics with state-of-the-art technology.
What Comes Next
“One of my main goals is to make this technology available to millions,” Lopez-Jimenez says. He mentions that Mayo is trying out high-tech stethoscopes to interpret heart signals with AI. “The idea is that a doctor in the Global South can use it to diagnose cardiac insufficiency,” Lopez-Jimenez explains. “It is already being tested in Nigeria, the country with the highest rate of genetic cardiac insufficiency in Africa. The results are impressively accurate.”
The Mayo Clinic is also working with doctors in Brazil to diagnose Chagas disease with the help of AI reliably and early. “New technology is always more expensive at the beginning,” Lopez-Jimenez cautions, “but in a few years, AI will be everywhere and it will make diagnostics cheaper and more accurate.”
And the Children’s National Hospital in Washington developed a portable AI device that is currently being tested to screen children in Uganda for rheumatic heart disease, which kills about 400,000 people a year worldwide. The new tool reportedly has an accuracy of 90 percent.
Both Lopez-Jimenez and Lüscher are confident that AI tools will continue to improve. “One advantage is that a computer can analyze images at 6 a.m. just as systematically as after midnight,” Lüscher points out. “A computer doesn’t get tired or have a bad day, whereas sometimes radiologists overlook significant symptoms. AI learns something and never forgets it.”

Note:
Okay, so I'm definitely not saying that everything with AI medicine will go right, and there won't be any major issues. That's definitely not the case (the article talks about some of those issues). But regulation around medicines is generally pretty tight, and
And if it goes right, this could be HUGE for disabled people, chronically ill people, and people with any of the unfortunately many marginalizations that make doctors less likely to listen.
This could shave years off of the time it takes people to get the right diagnosis. It could get answers for so many people struggling with unknown diseases and chronic illness. If we compensate correctly, it could significantly reduce the role of bias in medicine. It could also make testing so much faster.
(There's a bunch of other articles about all of the ways that AI diagnoses are proving more sensitive and more accurate than doctors. This really is the sort of thing that AI is actually good at - data evaluation and science, not art and writing.)
This decade really is, for many different reasons, the beginning of the next revolution in medicine. Luckily, medicine is mostly pretty well-regulated - and of course that means very long testing phases. I think we'll begin to really see the fruits of this revolution in the next 10 to 15 years.

Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is essential for overall health and well-being, especially for individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the condition. Consuming a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-dense foods can help regulate blood sugar levels and promote optimal health. Some of the best foods to eat to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels include:
1. Non-starchy vegetables: Vegetables such as leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, and zucchini are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They have a minimal impact on blood sugar levels and can help promote satiety.
2. Whole grains: Whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, oats, and whole wheat contain fiber, which slows down the absorption of glucose and helps prevent spikes in blood sugar levels. They also provide essential nutrients and energy.
3. Legumes: Beans, lentils, and chickpeas are rich in fiber and protein, which can help stabilize blood sugar levels and promote fullness. They are also a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
4. Lean protein: Sources of lean protein, such as poultry, fish, tofu, and legumes, can help regulate blood sugar levels and support muscle health. Protein-rich foods can help slow down the digestion of carbohydrates and prevent rapid spikes in blood sugar.
5. Healthy fats: Foods high in healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, can help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation. Including healthy fats in your diet can help maintain steady blood sugar levels and support overall health.
6. Berries: Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are low in sugar and high in fiber and antioxidants. They can be a nutritious and delicious option to satisfy sweet cravings without causing significant spikes in blood sugar levels.
7. Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium, and it contains probiotics that can support gut health. Choosing plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt can help maintain stable blood sugar levels while providing essential nutrients.
Overall, focusing on a balanced diet that includes a variety of whole, nutrient-dense foods can help support healthy blood sugar levels and overall well-being. It's also important to monitor portion sizes, limit added sugars and refined carbohydrates, and stay hydrated to maintain optimal blood sugar control.

EVERYONE DO A 4 DAY FAST (or more)
I recently finished my longest full fast (84hours), and it was the best decision I've made, so I want to tell you a bit about how it went and what I've noticed since finishing it.
I had binged the night before I started, so the next morning I wasnt hungry, and didn't feel like eating until late afternoon. I drank a lot of water (~3.5L throughout the day) to prevent hunger, and went to bed early so I couldn't eat. I got a bit hungry around lunch time on the second day, but after that I can honestly say I didn't feel hungry for the rest of my fast. I was surprised, I'll admit I'm one of those people with a bottomless stomach, and I'm terrible at knowing when I've had enough. It's amazing how quickly my body adapted from visibly shaking from sugar cravings to looking at or smelling foods and feeling absolutely nothing. After the second day I had normal energy and was able to do the odd workout and keep going for walks. I was thinking clearly and productive. The only issues I had were a) finding something to do to fill the time and b) the intense nausea I would get at night time from taking my vitamins without food. This was only an issue if I took longer than usual to fall asleep, so exercising before bed helped. I didn't feel hungry when I ended my fast- I am diabetic, and my blood sugar level dropped and wouldn't have risen unless I ate. I was worried eating anything would kind of 'open the floodgates' and I'd binge again, but actually this didn't happen. I went to my dining hall the next morning because I was a bit peckish, had a piece of bacon and half a hash brown, and then threw out the rest of my food because my body told me it had had enough.
Since ending my fast, I don't have sugar cravings: going cold Turkey really worked for me. I eat semi-regular meals, but I'm never really "hungry", so I don't worry about binging. I'm also fine with throwing food away: I think letting my body know what real emptiness feels like helped it learn when I've had enough, and fasting in general just killed any personal connection to food that made me feel bad about not finishing it. I lost about 4kg in my fast, which honestly isn't my record, but I've kept it off since with pretty normal eating habits (2 to 3 meals/ day with no snacks). Personally, I love that now my body physically revolts when it doesn't want food, and when it does, it doesn't demand it.
Moral of the story: do a fast. I would've loved to do a week, but just do however long you can and know it will help. The first 2-3 days will be the hardest, so remove all temptations and see how you feel from there, and you will be surprised at how easy it is. If you have any questions or want any advice you can comment/ message me and I'll help. I know fasting isn't new but I just feel so completely satisfied with my experience and want to help my disordered babies out <3

Today's (8/1/2024) Episode: Aging Up Is Hard To Do
After Noemi joined Luigi in adulthood, the pair struggled to settle into their new, older, stage of life.
Luigi had been busy after aging up, first grieving and then trying to make Noemi’s birthday perfect. When the vain sim finally checked his mirror, he was horrified by how OLD he looked. Wrinkles and bags under his eyes…!? The self-absorbed sim hated the marks time had left on his face.
It didn’t help his outlook that his eczema and anemia seemed to be getting worse, despite religiously sticking to his tried-and-true maintenance routines. He’d also begun to struggle with excessive thirst. None of it made it easy to meet his own high standards. Luigi was officially in a funk!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for Noemi, she had finally set a date to start the job that Skye’s birth and her health issues had postponed, but it was messing with her head.
She worried that her social struggles would prevent her from making a good impression on her bosses and new peers. On top of that, her inability to exercise the way she wanted to since Skye’s birth due to her surgeries had left her carrying a lot more leftover baby weight than she liked.
The idea of facing her new co-workers and clients when she feeling far from her “best” kicked her anxiety into high gear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Luigi admitted his unhappiness with his new, older look and recent ill health it prompted his fiancée to admit to her own concerns.
Noemi suggested that, since Luigi was feeling under the weather, they start trying to tackle things with a visit to their doctors.
Hopefully, his primary care provider could help him figure out what to do to get his chronic conditions back under control and Dr. Valasquez could help her brainstorm ways to manage her anxiety.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadly, the outcome of Luigi’s healthcare appointment only worsened his outlook.
His symptoms and answers to questions about his general dietary habits quickly prompted the doctor to order a panel of bloodwork. This revealed that Luigi’s recent fatigue and dry skin weren’t the worsening of his long-standing medical issues, but a sign that he needed to overhaul his lifestyle once again to deal with a new chronic condition: diabetes.
To keep his blood sugar in a healthy range Luigi would now need to avoid many of his favorite breakfast foods and mixology recipes. He hung up the phone in shock, his natural cheerfulness unable to find any bright side to the grim news. Why did these things keep happening to him!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Noemi didn’t fare much better. Her therapist wasn’t able to suggest anything she didn’t already know, leaving her no better off than before.
Grabbing a late dinner after putting Skye to bed the couple compared notes and tried to brainstorm. Luigi’s first idea came as he remembered how empowering it had felt for him and his cousins to curate their “new looks” after moving in together. Maybe, he told Noemi, they couldn’t change what was at the heart of their problems, but with a little “fashion magic” they could cover over them a bit. She agreed it was worth a try.
When he went on to bitterly joke: “At least my seldom sleepy trait keeps me mostly awake and alert. If only there was a satisfaction potion of chronic-illness-be-gone!” a lightbulb went off in Noemi’s brain. No satisfaction reward would help him, but there was definitely one for her weight concerns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Luigi saw the “Insta Lean” potion pop out of his fiancées inventory he placed a hand on her arm to stop her from chugging it down.
“What?” she asked him “It’s a perfectly safe one time reset. Now that I can exercise again, I’ll easily maintain a weight that makes me happy. Come to think of it, exercising more would be good for both of us. Didn’t the doctor say a regular fitness routine would help you manage your sugar levels?”
“Yes, he did” Luigi replied, “and that’s a great idea. If you’re spending points, do you have enough to pick up Seldom Sleepy too?” At her nod he smiled and continued. “Grab that, and we can burn the midnight oil together, going for late night jogs on the beach and early morning swims!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gesturing back at the potion his face got serious as he continued: “I just wanted you to know, before you drink that, that you are beautiful and loved just the way you are. If your new bosses or your bathroom mirror don’t appreciate you, I hope you realize how much I do.”
Noemi leaned across the table and kissed him softly. “I love you too. However much your love completes me though, I want to go into my new job feeling on top of the world. This expensive little cocktail will boost my confidence in the office Monday morning, when I’ll need all the help I can get!” With that, she tipped the glass back, letting the magical concoction slide down her throat with a cool tingle.
With their “fixer upper” plans in place the pair looked forward to a fashion makeover to highlight their new, more mature, and soon sleeker bodies!

6 Most Common Cat Health Problems - Tumblr
Tumblr media
Cats are good at self-care, but even your finicky feline can't prevent some of the more common cat diseases and health issues. To help you care for kitty, here's a brief outline of six of the most common cat health problems.
Common Cat Health Problem:
Vomiting: Vomiting is a very common cat health problem, with causes ranging from eating something poisonous or inedible (like string, or wool), to infection, urinary tract disease, or diabetes. Symptoms are usually obvious and include drooling and abdominal heaving. Vomiting can quickly leave your cat dehydrated, so if the kitty continues vomiting or acts ill, call your vet right away. Since it is hard for a pet owner to tell the difference between vomiting and regurgitation, collect a sample of your cat's vomit and take it with you to the vet.
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Diseases (FLUTD)
About 10% of cats brought to the vet have feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), which is actually a group of feline diseases with multiple causes.
Female and male cats can get FLUTD, and it often occurs in cats that are overweight, unfit, or who eat dry food. Stress, a multi-cat household, and sudden changes can all raise a cat's risk of FLUTD, and treatment depends on the type of FLUTD your cat has. FLUTD symptoms include:
Straining to urinate
Bloody urine
Urinating in unusual places
Crying when urinating
Licking around the urinary area (often because of pain)
Depression
Dehydration
Lack of appetite
Vomiting
It's always an emergency if your cat can't urinate. Call your vet immediately if you suspect your cat has a urinary tract problem.
Fleas: Fleas are a very common external feline health problem, but they can be treated easily. Signs your cat has fleas include: Flea dirt on their skin (they look like tiny black dots) Constant scratching Frequent licking Red or irritated skin Hair loss Skin infections or hot spots. Fleas can live for more than a year, and your pet risks anemia if the problem becomes serious, so make sure to treat your cat's flea problem and prevent future infestations. Talk to your vet about which flea control would be best for your cat. Treatments include oral medication, powders, foams, and topical medication.
Tapeworms: One of the most common feline health problems inside your cat, tapeworms, live in your kitty's small intestine, sometimes growing as long as two feet. Symptoms of a tapeworm infection can be subtle, but may include vomiting and weight loss. The easiest way to tell if your cat has tapeworms is to look at its feces and around its anus. If you see small white worms, or what look like grains of rice or sesame seeds, your cat likely has tapeworms. Treatment options include injection or oral medication, but because cats almost always get tapeworms as a result of swallowing a flea, make sure to handle any flea problems your cat has before tackling tapeworms.
Diarrhea: Many things can cause diarrhea in cats, including hairballs, eating spoiled food, allergies, infection, liver disease, cancer, and more. Diarrhea symptoms include loose, watery, or liquid stool. Depending on its cause, Diarrhea can last a day, a week, or even months. If your cat has diarrhea, offer your pet plenty of fresh, clean water to prevent dehydration, then remove the kitty's food for no more than 12-24 hours. Take your cat to the vet if he or she still has diarrhea after a day, or immediately if you notice vomiting, dark, or bloody stools, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, or if your cat is straining to defecate.
Eye Problems: Eye problems in cats can be caused by a number of things, including cataracts, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, trauma, viruses, inflammation, and retinal disease. A few symptoms that may mean your cat has eye problems include watery eyes, tear-stained fur, cloudiness, red or white eyelid linings, goo in the corners of the eye, squinting, pawing at the eye, or a visible third eyelid. Unless you know what's causing your cat's eye problems, there isn't much you can do other than wipe away any gunk with a damp cotton ball. After that, call your vet.
Conclusion Understanding these common cat health problems can help you stay proactive and ensure your feline friend gets the care they deserve. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, and a clean, stress-free environment are essential for preventing many of these issues. If you notice any unusual symptoms, don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian. Remember, early intervention can make a significant difference in your cat's health and happiness. For more tips

Carb Counting for Type 2 Diabetics: How Many Carbs Should You Eat?
Managing your carbs is a crucial part of living with type 2 diabetes. It helps keep your blood sugar levels steady and can improve your overall health. So, how many carbs should you actually eat each day? Let's break it down.
Understanding Carbs: What Are They?
Carbs, or carbohydrates, are one of the three main types of nutrients. They’re the body's primary source of energy. When you eat carbs, your body turns them into sugar (glucose). This sugar enters your bloodstream and fuels your cells. But for someone with type 2 diabetes, controlling this sugar level is essential to prevent high blood sugar.
Daily Carb Needs: A Good Starting Point
When it comes to daily carb intake, it’s not one-size-fits-all. Most experts recommend that people with type 2 diabetes aim for about 45% to 60% of their daily calories from carbs. For example, if you eat 2,000 calories a day, that means you should aim for about 225 to 300 grams of carbs. However, many do better on a lower range, around 130-150 grams, especially if they’re watching their blood sugar.
Quality Over Quantity: Choosing the Right Carbs
Not all carbs are created equal. Focus on high-quality, nutrient-dense foods. Here are some tips:
Whole Grains: Think brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread. They’re packed with fiber and keep you feeling full longer.
Fruits and Vegetables: They provide essential vitamins and minerals. Choose fresh or frozen options over canned ones with added sugar.
Legumes: Beans, lentils, and peas are great sources of protein and fiber. They can help control your blood sugar levels.
Monitoring Your Blood Sugar: The Key to Success
After meals, check your blood sugar levels to see how different foods affect you. This can help you find the right balance of carbs that works for your body. Keeping a food journal might also help you track what you eat and how it impacts your sugar levels.
Meal Planning: Making It Work for You
Planning your meals around your carb intake can make a world of difference. Try to spread your carbs evenly throughout the day. This means not loading up on carbs in one meal and having none in another. Balanced meals help keep your energy levels steady and glucose levels in check.
Listen to Your Body: It Knows Best
Don’t forget to pay attention to your body. Everyone's experience with carbs is different. What works for one person might not work for another. If you feel sluggish or have high blood sugar, it could be a sign to adjust your carb intake or the types of carbs you’re eating.
Final Thoughts: Finding Your Balance
Managing carbs is critical for those with type 2 diabetes. It might take some trial and error to find what works for you, and that’s perfectly okay. Keep in mind the general guidelines, focus on quality carbs, and monitor your body’s response. With time, you’ll discover your unique balance that keeps you feeling your best.

Would just like to say that this storm in SoCal is the perfect example of incompetence.
Not from the community though.
It has now been 11 (eleven) days without snow plows. San Bernardino County is offering shelter and food at the local high school and other places but the people (including me and my family !) can't even get there because the roads aren't plowed.
The National Guard is supposedly up here but we haven't seen or heard any sign of them.
We've had one grocery store a town over have the entire roof collapse from the weight of the snow.
As a total, my area has gotten over 9 (NINE) feet of snow in just under two weeks.
Gas leaks have begun everywhere because the pipes are shifting from the snow. Two houses that I know of have burned (basically exploded) from gas leaking and the fire department can't get there in time, because the roads haven't been plowed.
The community has turned to help each other though, offering to shovel snow off of decks and roofs to prevent collapse, offering extra food, water, firewood, medicine, pet food. We can't get down the mountain because the roads haven't been plowed and those who are able to find a way down can't get back up.
People need medicine, food, water, heat. We had a diabetic just around the corner who ran a high fever and thankfully made it to the local hospital in time. An emergency CAT plow had to come, but it still took a long time for it to get through the snow. 911 is useless at the moment, they are two to three (2-3) days behind emergency requests. If you're in trouble, you're on your own.
In the meantime, the news is showing lovely helicopter footage of the pretty snow covered mountains (I'm tired of hearing helicopters overhead every 15 min) and San Bernardino County is patting themselves on the back during press conferences saying how good of a job people are doing to help with relief. They have done NOTHING. And the sheriff (who doesn't have jurisdiction over this issue) is trying to deny the hospital helicopter from taking off and landing up in the mountains because there "is too much air travel so it would be dangerous to have this helicopter in the air" but all of the news helicopters doing nothing are perfectly fine. That helicopter has saved lots of lives so far and is the only way down the mountain for those in desperate medical need.
There have been unprecedented avalanches in nearby mountain communities. Forest falls, just below Big Bear, has no water. An avalanche took their water tower out.
The mountain communities need plows. Yes, food and water and shelter are nice in theory, but get us PLOWS. If people can get down the mountain and around town to help others, that would be the best way to get through this.
My family has enough food and heat, thankfully. But we only planned for 2 weeks when we heard of the storm. It's been 11 (ELEVEN) days. The only news we've heard of a plow coming is within 1-2 weeks at minimum. We might run out of dog food, cat food, firewood. And what about other people who didn't stock up or didn't have the money to stock up? What about short time rental users who excepted to be up here for a few days and are stranded without supplies?
Get the mountain communities plows.

What popular food/ingredient(s) do you despise with your entire being? Mine is alliums (minus garlic, love that stuff) and nuts (in my defense I am mildly allergic)
Common? None, really. I didn't like Natto, but that's an acquired taste even in Japan where it's something of a staple. Also don't like Foie Gras, but again, that's Rich People Food and also uncommon.
What I DO despise with my whole being is people's attitudes toward food and ingredients.
Food is incredibly subjective, and that's not accounting for things like allergies, diabetes, sensory issues, eating disorders, and a bazillion other things that affect what one can or cannot eat. What we like to eat or can eat doesn't often come down to conscious choice; we either do or don't like something, can or can't afford it, or can or can't consume it. I will defend 'picky' eaters with my life, and people who like to say others are fat bc they're lazy and eat 'junk food' all the time are really exposing their complete lack of understanding things like the socioeconomic factors that prevent people from eating 'well' (Google 'Food Desert', and be apalled that places like this exist. In major population centers in the US). If you work two jobs just to keep the lights on and your family housed, and your partner also works, where are you gonna get the time and energy to cook three meals a day? Or even do meal prep? Throw kids into the mix and that puts cooking 'healthy' food even further out of reach. But people like to act as if spending four bucks on an 8oz box of chickpea rotini pasta because they're on the 'keto diet' makes them morally superior to everyone else, and healthier. In reality they're probably just a snob who's abusing a medical diet designed for diabetics to try and induce a metabolic state that is DANGEROUS to a non-diabetic, or they're significantly misguided, at best.
I could go on, God could I ever go on, but shit like THAT is what I despise with my whole being. You can hate alliums all you want, that's perfectly fine. I'll even support vegans and those paleo folks, because what they put in their bodies is their choice. But when they act like anyone else is a morally bankrupt degenerate, it makes me want to bite and kill.

👀Must Know: Nutrition Tips and Tricks 🥗🍽️
📌 Today, we're into must-know nutrition tips and tricks. Good nutrition is the base of a healthy life! Let's get into how you can make the most of your diet. ⬇️
1️⃣ Tip 1: Include Whole Foods
Whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are full of nutrients. Unprocessed foods give you the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs to function correctly. Eating whole foods reduces your intake of added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. Whole foods are naturally lower in calories and higher in fiber, which helps you maintain a healthy weight and digestive health.
2️⃣ Tip 2: Understand Macronutrients
Balance your macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Carbs give you energy, proteins support muscle repair and growth, healthy fats support hormone production and brain health. Aim for a balanced plate at every meal. Carbs should come from whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Choose lean proteins like chicken, fish, beans, and legumes. Incorporate healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and avocados. This balance gives you sustained energy and overall health.
3️⃣ Tip 3: Incorporate Micronutrients
Micronutrients like vitamins and minerals are important for many bodily functions. Make sure you have a diverse diet to get a variety of micronutrients. Leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and colorful fruits are excellent sources. Vitamin C from citrus fruits supports the immune system, calcium from dairy products strengthens bones, and iron from spinach and lentils prevents anemia. A varied diet covers all your nutritional bases.
4️⃣ Tip 4: Hydrate
Stay hydrated! Water is for digestion, nutrient absorption, and toxin elimination. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day. You can also include herbal teas and water-rich fruits like watermelon and cucumber. Hydration is good for skin, weight management, and physical performance. Carry a water bottle with you and stay hydrated throughout the day. Listen to your body and drink when you're thirsty.
5️⃣ Tip 5: Fiber is Your Best Friend
Fiber is for digestion, weight management, and chronic disease prevention. Incorporate soluble and insoluble fiber from oats, beans, fruits, and veggies. Soluble fiber from oats and beans helps control blood sugar and lower cholesterol. Insoluble fiber from whole grains and veggies helps with bowel regularity. A fiber-rich diet is good for your gut microbiome.
6️⃣ Tip 6: Limit Processed Foods
Processed foods contain unhealthy fats, sugars, and sodium, which can lead to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Opt for whole, natural foods whenever possible. Cooking at home allows you to control the ingredients and avoid additives. Read food labels to make informed choices. Reducing processed food intake means better long-term health outcomes.
7️⃣ Tip 7: Eat Mindfully
Be mindful by paying attention to your hunger and fullness cues; eat slowly and savor each bite. This helps with digestion and prevents overeating. Mindful eating enables you to enjoy your food more and recognize true hunger vs emotional eating. It helps you make healthier food choices and the eating experience. Put away distractions and focus on your meal.
8️⃣ Tip 8: Plan and Prep
Meal planning and prepping help you eat balanced. Set aside time each week to plan your meals, grocery shop, and prep ingredients. This saves time and ensures you have healthy options available. Planning reduces the temptation to grab unhealthy convenience foods. Batch cooking and storing meals make busy days easier and consistent healthy eating. Make a grocery list to avoid impulse buys.
➡️ These tips will make a big impact. Remember, consistency is key. Small changes add up over time.

Simple cardio activities that raise the heart rate include: jogging. cycling. running. brisk walking. swimming. playing tennis. doing aerobics. It is best for a person to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of strength training per week.

Restoration of normal blood flow in atherosclerotic arteries ... - NCBI
Blood flow is a key regulator of atherosclerosis. Disturbed blood flow promotes atherosclerotic plaque development, whereas normal blood flow protects against plaque development. We hypothesized that normal blood flow is also therapeutic, if it were able to be restored within atherosclerotic arteries. Apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE−/−) mice were initially instrumented with a blood flow-modifying cuff to induce plaque development and then five weeks later the cuff was removed to allow restoration of normal blood flow.

Lifestyle Changes for Lower Extremity Arterial Disease
Exercising Regularly. Regular exercise improves the health of your arteries in several ways. First, it lowers bad cholesterol and boosts good cholesterol, which can reduce plaque buildup in arteries. It also increases the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that helps dilate the arteries and improve blood pressure in the cells that line the arteries, enhancing circulation. Exercise helps control the symptoms of diabetes, high blood pressure, and even stress, which can worsen high blood pressure—one of the leading causes, along with plaque buildup, of lower extremity arterial disease.
Some other ways to improve circulation include:
Cardiovascular exercise
Activities like jogging, cycling, running, brisk walking, swimming, playing tennis, and aerobics can help raise your heart rate and improve circulation.
Stretching
Stretching before and after exercise can help boost circulation.
Hydration
Drinking enough water throughout the day can increase oxygen levels in your blood, which can lead to better circulation. Experts recommend drinking 8–12 glasses of water per day.
Diet
Eating certain foods, like cayenne pepper, pomegranate, onions, cinnamon, garlic, fatty fish, beets, turmeric, leafy greens, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and berries, can help increase blood flow and circulation.
