Braces.

I had my braces on for 18 months, and they were the best decision of my life. I can breathe better, my jaw and chin look better, my teeth are straighter, and I have no more pain. Facial harmony is everything, and mine was restored by an expert orthodontist and continued use of my retainers. Jaw surgery wasn’t reasonable or necessary, but I can’t even begin to describe the impact that dental whitening, braces, weight loss, and proper dental care work had on my face.

 

Electrolytes and Hydration.

I was severely dehydrated and in need of electrolytes for years and years. I thought that drinking enough water wasn’t as important as people made it seem, but my life changed when I started to do it. Life feels much less stressful now that I’m properly hydrated, and I make sure to toss a little lemon and salt in my water and drink a Gatorade or Liquid IV to get electrolytes.

 

Darker and Longer Hair.

I look better with hair that’s long, dark, and thick. I have alopecia, so I did a number of things to disguise my hair loss growing up, but I wear wigs now that my hair is gone. I was told to wear my hair long, dark, and straight last year, and whenever I do, people tell me that I look otherworldly. Now that I know what to do with my hair and what looks best, I’m a million times more confident about myself.

 

Less Dairy.

I am not lactose intolerant, but I do not need to be eating dairy in excess. I enjoy dairy, so I won’t cut it out of my diet, but I don’t need to be eating it in the amount that I did. I was bloated, always breaking out, and tired all the time, but my low energy dissipated the second I cut my dairy intake. I’m not 100% dairy-free and most likely won’t ever be, but I’m careful with the amount I consume.

 

Korean Contact Lenses.

Americans think that all colored contact lenses are unnatural, and American-made colored contacts are. I use Olens contacts and only use the dark shades, and they’re amazing. I find that having huge, dark, striking eyes helps me get exactly what I want, and I love the way I look when I’m wearing contacts. I use contacts to craft my look and emphasize my eyes, and I never buy or use colors that aren’t brown or black. Wearing dark contacts has reduced my need for so much bright eye makeup; they make me look friendlier, and I look better in photos.

 

Better Quality Makeup.

Investing in higher-quality makeup and actually learning how to apply it was crucial. Buying Hourglass, Pat McGrath, Charlotte Tilbury, MAC, and Nars was sort of essential to my makeup journey, and I look much better now that I’ve invested the time and money into learning about makeup. Dupes just don’t hold up to the real things, and I look better now that I’m spending $45 on one product instead of spending $45 on five different products to try to replicate the look.

 

Urea, Glutamic Acid, and Dry Brushing.

I used to have serious strawberry arms and legs, dry skin, and dark spots from body acne, but all of that has cleared up. Hyaluronic acid and body serums have nothing on this combo, and dry brushing has completely cleared up my rough skin and helped with my stretch marks. If you want skin that’s plump, hydrated, glowing, and looks healthy, then you have to exfoliate your dry and wet skin and start using this trio to care for your body.

 

Better Skincare Products.

I invested a lot in using fancy designer brands, but the things that helped me the most were basic, unscented, and quality. I use Paula’s Choice exfoliant, plenty of SPF 100, retinol, and a variety of Korean and American products. My facial acne is gone, my dark marks are cleared, my skin barrier is healed, my skin looks healthier, and I’m glowing. Drunk Elephant, celebrity skincare brands, and trending products didn’t do it for me; figuring out what I needed and then implementing it into my routine helped.

 

Creating my own aesthetic.

I won’t stop talking about The Blend because it helped me become who I am today. I wanted to create a look that would help me, and so I had to spend months solidifying my image. It took me a year to get to where I am today, but life became easier once I was able to figure out what I should be doing, what I should be saving for or investing in, and what suited me. 𝟏. Hygiene: This key for any glow-up, and it doesn't have to be super extra, just the basics to stay fresh. You should be showering at least once a day, preferably at night (and if you work out in the morning, definitely shower after that). When you're in the shower, PLEASE don’t just use your hands, grab a loofah, sponge, or washcloth, anything! But hands alone? A big no. Shaving is optional, but do it as often as you need. Some girls can get away with a couple times a week, others might need to every day, it’s totally personal. Lastly, exfoliation is your everything. You only need to do it 2-3 times a week, but girl, it’ll give you that smooth skin by scrubbing away all the dead skin cells. Trust, your skin will be glowing!

𝟐. Hair: Keeping up with hair care can be such a struggle sometimes, especially depending on your hair type, but trust me, it’s 100% worth it. I’ve been through a whole hair journey myself, so I get it! There’s a ton I could say, but here’s the tea-- first, you need to know your exact hair type. This will help you figure out how often to wash it and which products will make your hair thrive. It’s all part of getting that soft, long hair faster. Oh, and don’t forget—there are certain hairstyles and cuts that are perfect for your face shape, so do a little research to find what suits you best. You’re already gorgeous, but the right cut will take it to another level! 

𝟑. SkinCare: If you're ready for that glow-up, it’s time to get serious about your skincare! Start with a bomb cleanser, something that matches your skin type (oily, dry, combo, girl... you know the drill). Exfoliate 2-3 times a week to get rid of those dead skin cells, and trust me, your skin will feel brand new. Hydration is everything, so find a moisturizer that leaves you dewy, not greasy. And don’t even think about skipping sunscreen, UV rays are NOT your bestie. Finish off with a glow serum and watch yourself literally shine. Glow up season is officially ON.

deer doesn’t wear much makeup because she doesn’t even really need it. she spent her first paycheck on her trusty brown mascara to elongate her already naturally curled lashes. she also uses whatever champagne colored highlighter she can find and only uses it on her brow bone and nose. in her back pocket she keeps her precious burt’s bees tinted lip balm that is used almost every 5 minutes to keep her lips that perfect berry stained color. other than that she just uses a clear brow gel to keep her eyebrows intact and shaped the way she wants them.

kitty:

kitty LOVESSS a good lip combo, she always keeps her favorite lip liner and lip oil in her purse wherever she goes. kitty keeps her skin bronzed and glowy after applying her flawless base. her eye makeup is also always on point with a sharp wing and whatever cool toned eyeshadow she’s feeling that day. and every 6-8 months she gets eyelash extensions to accentuate her catty eyes.

puppy:

puppy doesn’t wear makeup AT ALL. she complains that she can feel it on her face and eventually just washes it off. the most she’d ever use is a cheap mascara if she’s feeling a little funky (it gets smudged by the end of the day)

bunny:

bunny likes a nice pink, dewy look using only the best quality products. she never uses foundation because she’s scared she’ll break out overnight, so she uses a tinted moisturizer and the smallest amount of concealer under her eyes. just like kitty, she tweezes her eyebrows regularly and uses her favorite eyeshadow palette on the daily along with her annual lash lift. lastly, her cheeks remain flushed and glowy as if she doesn’t turn pink at the drop of a hat already.

i’ve struggled with acne all throughout my teen years and even into my early adult years. i’ve tried and experimented with so many different products and i can’t even count how many different routines i’ve tried. but now, my skin is better than ever and i’ve finally perfected my skincare routine! this is what works for me! everyone’s skin is different, so take my advice with a grain of salt!

let’s begin !!

ᝰ.ᐟ my skin type

oily, combo, acne prone

it’s important that you figure out what your skin type is so that you can research and find products that will work best for you!

different skin types:

oily - skin appears very shiny, especially in the T-zone area (forehead, nose, & chin). very visible pores

dry - skin may feel tight and may appear flaky across your face, especially near your cheeks. you may also notice that your skin has a dull appearance

combo - your T-zone is very oily, but other parts of your face like your cheeks may have dry parts that appear flaky and/or tight

normal - skin doesn’t appear oily/shiny, there isn’t any flakiness or a tight feeling

sensitive - irritation, stinging feeling from products, redness on the skin

ᝰ.ᐟ step one: double cleansing

i started double cleansing about 2 years ago, and it has helped my skin so so so much. it’s helped unclog my pores, make my skin feel smoother & softer, and has helped reduce my acne breakouts! & since i have oilier skin, i’ve noticed that the oiliness has definitely calmed down ever since i started double cleansing!

benefits of double cleansing:

deep cleaning: when you double cleanse, especially with a cleansing balm/oil, you really get down into your pores to help clear any sebum, dirt, grime, and any residue from other products like sunscreen & makeup out of your skin!

acne prevention: since double cleansing helps to deepen your cleanse, it’ll also help reduce the amount of breakouts you have and can even prevent any new breakouts from happening!

better product absorption: with a completely clean slate (your face), your skin will have an easier time absorbing any other skincare products you use on your face!

suitable for all skin-types: double cleansing is safe for any and all skin types so long as you use the right products for your skin!! so make sure you find cleansing balms/oils that work well with your skin, and the same goes for your 2nd cleanser!

how to double cleanse:

choose a cleansing balm or oil! i personally use a cleansing oil (specifically the Anua Heartleaf Pore Cleansing Oil *Mild*) again, choose a cleansing oil/balm that works for your skin type! in the past, i’ve used The Ordinary Squalene Cleanser!

choose a gentle face cleanser! step 2 of double cleansing should be the regular face wash you use! i use the Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam! in the past, i’ve used the Cetaphil cleanser!

apply your cleansing balm/oil on dry skin! when you use these kinds of products on dry skin and you work it into your skin, it allows the oil to bind any makeup, sunscreen, or other dirt/grime together and out of your pores. you really want to work it into your skin, massaging areas where your pores are the most clogged (typically your nose & chine area). you want to work this initial cleanser into your skin for about 3-5 minutes (at least that’s how long i do it). i know that seems like a long time, but trust me when i say you’ll literally see sebaceous filaments and dirt get pulled out of your skin! don’t be afraid to really get in there!

emulsify the cleansing oil! what this means is just rubbing your face with wet hands! i’ll get my hands wet or just splash some water on the face are star rubbing at that cleanser again. you’ll see the cleansing oil turn into a milky white color! emulsifying the oil cleanser just makes it easier for you to completely rinse of that cleanser so that you aren’t leaving an oil residue on your skin and ensuring a thorough cleanse!

go in with your gentle face cleanser! this second cleanse just allows for a clarifying effect to ensure that you get a really good cleanse. think of how you double shampoo: the first wash is to get rid of all the dirt and grime & that second wash is to ensure that your scalp and hair is completely clean!

remember to pat dry your skin! rubbing your face while drying your skin can be pretty harsh on you! the pulling and tugging on your skin could also cause premature wrinkles, so be gentle with your skin!

ᝰ.ᐟ step two: apply toner

toners have a plethora of benefits for you! like balancing your skin’s pH balance, hydration, minimizing the size of pores, and improving your skin’s texture!

the toners i use: Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner & Mediheal Retinol Collagen Lifting Pads

i use the Mediheal toner pads every other night! i typically use it more as a sheet mask!

toner i’ve used in the past: Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner

how to apply toner:

you can really do any method you feel is best! i’ve applied toner by putting it on a cotton pad and rubbing that across my face, but more recently i’ve started applying the toner directly with my hands and just patting it into my skin!

i’ve also seen people use those thinner pads and soak them with their toner and use them as little sheet masks!

ᝰ.ᐟ step three: apply acne treatment(s)

i’ve used so many different acne treatments in the past that i can’t even remember what i’ve used, but i went to see a dermatologist a couple years ago & she prescribed me Tretinoin cream! the strength of it is 0.025% and it has helped my skin TREMENDOUSLY. literally, if i see that i have a breakout, i’ll put my tretinoin on it and as soon as the next morning hits the blemish has reduced greatly! also, on the nights i don’t use the Mediheal toner pads, i use my tretinoin cream!

some info on Tretinoin & Retinol:

both are retinoids! however, as i mentioned earlier i did have my tretinoin prescribed to me, so that just means that tretinoin is a stronger & more potent retinoid while retinol is not. retinol can be purchased over-the-counter, so it’s more accessible to people!

because of tretinoin’s strong potency, it can be harsher on the skin than retinol is! tretinoin is typically used for more severe acne cases, but both tretinoin & retinol have the same goal for the skin!

retinol can be found in a variety of products like creams, serums, moisturizers, and toners! tretinoin is just a topical cream.

tretinoin & retinol should not be used together! this can cause dryness and flaky skin, and if you have more sensitive skin it could really irritate or even damage your skin barrier. (i know this from experience, so please do not make the same mistake i did!!)

even oily skin types need moisture! moisturizers not only help to add moisture to your skin and make you skin feel nice and soft, it also helps to lock in all the products you’ve used!

moisturizing tips:

pat your skin! after i’ve applied moisturizer, i like to use the palms of my hands and tips of my fingers to pat my face to get that moisturizer to really lock it into my skin.

don’t forget your hands & neck! honestly, this applies to toners as well! yes, you want your face to look good too, but don’t neglect your the skin on your neck and hands! your face, neck, and hands will be the first places to show signs of aging!

this is my nighttime routine, and i keep it pretty simple! i’ve tried doing those 7-10 step skincare routines, but i feel like they either didn’t do anything & i just spent a ton of money for nothing or they made my skin worse. again, this is just what works for me! there are days where i’ll treat myself and maybe do a face mask like once every two weeks! sometimes, less is more! oh, and the products i listed as “used in the past” aren’t necessarily just products that didn’t work for me, some of those products i would honestly go back to using and some are products i’d definitely ditch! i can make a full review of all the skincare products i’ve used!

also, just to reiterate, everyone’s different! a simple skincare routine may or may not work for you, and that’s okay! it’s important to do what’s best for you! if you find that including more serums, creams, etc. is more beneficial for your skin, then great! if you’re like me and your skin needs something more simplified, that’s great too! do what works for you!

No one will quite look exactly like him, but I’ve finally concluded, after much deliberation, that he looks a combination of Iwan Rheon (left and top middle) and this random Russian guy I found on Pinterest, Arseniy Popov (bottom middle & right). However, both of them are a bit older than he is, so just 🌈imagine🌈 them aged down a little bit. Also, yes, it’s more than ironic that the guy who plays one of Wyatt’s character inspirations, Ramsy fucking Bolton, is also an Aid face claim. Full circle moment or cosmic horror? You decide.

Why did Roxanne, Erin and Kelsey all switch from the side pony tail to the braid and back pony tail? Roxanne's old Parr wig was one of the best of any production, and to switch out both Erin and Kelsey's wigs when they're different from what Gabriella wore or what they used to wear just feels bizarre

Wig design is basically about trying to take the typical standardized styles and translate them to the individual actors’ faces, hair/skin tones, and textures. (Here’s a great in-depth post Sofia did that goes into more detail about this and talks about Roxanne Couch’s change too). In this case, the mid-ponytails are more flattering on them than the side.

Some styles just work better than others for different facial shapes - some people look better with a high up do, with a low, half pulled back, all down, bangs, whatever. In Roxanne’s case, the side ponytail was a little too harsh; the new wig softens and flatters her face more subtly. Similar reason for Erin Ramirez/Marilyn Caserta/Kelsee Kimmel as well. The old styles weren’t bad on them, and it was nice on Roxanne particularly! But the new styling is a better fit for all of them.

It’s also pretty heavily based on hair texture. The initial side Parr styling was based on a style sometimes worn by Alicia Keys, and the hairstyle is primarily worn by Black women. As such it's based on a range of hair types and textures that we mostly see in (some) Black women: defined, soft, loose curls with a lot of volume. If you're familiar with hair typing, it's going to work best with hair in the type 3 categories (here's a good introductory article with examples). It's a gorgeous style that can look lovely! It was very flattering on Maiya Quansah-Breed and has continued to work well for queens with similar hair styles. But Six has struggled from the start with adapting it to other hair types and textures. Most of the other Six hairstyles are generic enough that they can be adapted to different textures with minimal change to the overall aesthetic. The original Parr not so much, because it really needs that specific combo of qualities for the hairstyle to work. If you have the looseness but don't have the right curl or the volume it looks too flat and asymmetrical, which we saw with Gabriela Carrillo's initial hairstyle; if you go for the curl but go too short or structured it's just not going to flatter as many of the actors and you've lost that really lovely softness, which we've seen with quite a few of the non-Black actors' styles. Many of the Black actors naturally have the hair texture(s) and type(s) that lend itself well to the hairstyle, so they've generally had a lot of success with those. For the Black actors that don't, they've generally A. adapted the hairstyle to work with their natural hair (usually for queens with enough volume that it still translates well, like Viquichele Cross or Danielle Steers), OR B. given them a wig that may not quite match their natural hair texture, but still looks natural and allows for the right texture/structure. (Generally queens in both camps have a type 4 hair texture and which they go for has depended on budget and hair care for the individual actor.) But for the non-Black actors, that's much more difficult. Very few non-Black actors have hair that's even remotely the right texture for this hairstyle: actors like Gabriela Carrillo and Roxanne Couch have some texture but not enough of the curl and volume needed, while actors like Erin Ramirez and Kelsee Kimmel have natural hair textures that are much closer to working but still don't quite work. They could give these actors a wig with a texture different than their own that would be more conducive to the style, but while doing so generally reads as natural on the Black queens, doing so for non-Black queens would often make the wig read as unnatural or even outright inappropriate. The UK has historically gotten around all that by doing the curly side ponytail. It does work fairly well, but it's still not flattering on everyone and the style they go for is visibly unnaturally curled, which isn't inherently bad but doesn't work as well for Parr as it does for some of the other queens (her whole vibe is very low fuss, or as low as it can be given the spectacle that is Six costumes). It's not a bad choice, and like you said Roxanne's was one of the best! But it's not going to work well for everyone, and for Roxanne specifically the switch to a back ponytail is a slightly better fit, and of course they've continued that trend since.

In the US (and NCL) there's been a whole lot of experimentation. The Aragon Tour alone has gone through multiple different hairstyles. Think Gabriela Carrillo's original Aragon Tour side-swept to her loose low side ponytail, compared to Kelsee Kimmel and Erin Ramirez's loose curly updos piled more directly on top of their heads. Over on the Boleyn Tour we've seen Tay Pearlstein with a smaller and more structured side updo, and then Sydney Parra with a looser and relatively longer side ponytail (which is one of my personal favorites, actually!). For Gabi and Sydney they experimented until they got to styles they ultimately were happy with, and now they're standardized to the current back ponytail iteration, but Erin/Kelsee/Tay never quite had that. TL;DR: Back ponytail is both more flattering on most of them + an easier style adaptation for some of the queens whose hair doesn't lend itself as well to the side ponytails.

Also quick note that there’s also nothing saying the alternates’ hairstyles have to be remotely identical to the principals! Six has never really gone for that anyway, beyond the usual standardization. Like I said, they experimented with Gabi's wig (over a longgg period of time) until they got to something they were happy with, but it seems like they just never got to that point with Erin/Kelsee/Tay/etc!
