Here’s my take on the whole audio books vs. reading:

Oral tradition of storytelling predates written ones by millennias, and honestly, which one you like is just a personal preference.

The actual difference is

when listening, you have no idea how to write characters’ names

when reading, you have no idea how to pronounce characters’ names

Sonadow Fic Rec

Okay, before you jump down to the masterpieces listed below, I just wanted to state this:

These authors have given this phenomenal content for free, baked with time and effort. I have never once ignored this, hence why I try and comment on each and every one of these fics. However, my energy and ability to be verbose differs day to day. Some of these fics I have not given proper comments for, despite this, I will be on it the moment I can be. In the time being, (once I am able to find my comments on each of these fics) I will be sharing my adoration for them further in other posts (and most likely link back to this one).

With that being said, please, PLEASE take your time to check each of these fics out. If they're not your cup of tea? Valid! But hands down I have never dedicated myself to making a fic rec like this until now. But I MUST share and spread these works, they are much too dear to me not to, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

Gotta say, my favorite scene in all of the Artemis Fowl series has gotta be the thumb scene in TEC. Not only does it give a great example of Holly’s principle of “do no harm unless needed” and how rigidly she sticks to it, but it’s also freakin’ hilarious from my perspective.

Like. Holly. This is an evil businessman who has killed one of your friends and plans on killing the other. He has the stolen technology of your secret People. He is all around an asshole, completely unconscious, and your own fairy tech means he won’t feel a thing.

I know some people are hesitant to try a new show if they won't have someone to talk to about it, so it seems like the obvious way to solve that, plus help people find new shows and vice versa? I don't actually know how book clubs work.

If I DO end up doing a rewatch of Torchwood it will be a fun game of "how much of what I consider to be canon has just purely been from reading fanfic these past 7 years, some of the audio dramas and audio books, and the same 4 episodes every time I rehyperfixate?"

Just finished the first Animorphs book!! Pretty good, holds up. Definitely feels more like an episode 1 than a complete story, but that's uh. What it is. Classic pulperback sci fi. The audiobook was way too good and my library has. Scattered copies in audio, so I've got to look into where I'm getting access to more without breaking the bank.

The Percy Jackson books were really written in conversation with Animorphs, eh? Percy's "The best thing for you is to make yourself believe this is fiction" vs Jake's "I pray that someone will believe me" opening narrations, Percy's being dragged away from the home he lives to go on adventures vs Jake's home being invaded by his enemy before the story even began. Fantasy vs sci fi, obviously. Wonder if anyone in the target demo had the opportunity to pick up on that. Do kids read the scholastic pulperbacks of yesteryear, or are they pushed hard into new releases? Well Riordan's books would have been coming right off the bumper of Applegate's, so maybe it's more likely than all that.

(I read both number 1s for the first time this summer, not back to back but recently.)
