thinking about how i wish there was a post about brushing your teeth that didn't have at least a touch of ableism in it and then realising hey wait, i can write that post.
so if you're a cripple like me who can't be shamed or bullied into it because no amount of patronising condescension can make you able bodied, here's my tips.
- dental tooth picks. you can get the kind that have floss at one end and a sharp pick at the other. get some and keep them beside your bed. if you don't have/can't get a bin for beside your bed, use a bag or a cup to put the dirty ones in.
- a simple salt water rinse can help with a lot of dental pain. sip, do very, very gentle swishes with it. you can keep water and salt and empty paper cups beside your bed. just make sure to keep the spit cup and the water cup seperate like artists have to do with paint water.
- if you struggle with gripping a tooth brush and can't afford an adapted one, you can try using a damp flannel with some toothpaste on it.
- if you have money, you can also buy disposable tooth brushes. you can get ones you put on a finger to wipe round or search for chewable ones if you struggle with using your arms or your hands.
- if youre able to get out of bed, as always, if you can do a task sitting down, do it sitting down. investing in a shower stool you can move to the sink can help, or even just a cheap camping chair or anything that let's you sit if your bathroom has room for it.
fellow cripples feel free to chime in with any other suggestions.
and to all my cripples with "bad" teeth, missing teeth, dentures or plates, i love you. to all my cripples who are bedbound, who can't do things for themselves, who have to rely on care, who can't access care, who don't live somewhere accessible to be independent, i love you too. your disability does not make you inferior. your pain does not make you easier to control. your worth is not determined by how healthy you are or what parts of your body you have the ability to care for are.

truly wild how driving really does become like piloting a mech after a while. like it sounds so car-bro-y but the car genuinely does become like an extension of your body. your muscles are simply making the correct micro-movements to perfectly manouvre a giant piece of machinery through a constantly moving maze while your brain is busy singing karaoke. you can physically feel when a gap is too small for your car-sona to fit through, like a cat putting its whiskers into a crevice. your brain is suddenly able to do on-the-fly s=d/t calculations in a milisecond and tell you exactly how quickly you need to move to avoid an oncoming vehicle while turning across the road. why does driving unlock the unused 89% of my brain

Solid advice, but I disagree with this part:
choose a story that you can legibly draw at your current artistic skill level. if you can only draw stick figures, that's fine, but you probably shouldn't make an action webcomic about kaiju battles.
Drawing a regularly updates webcomic is one of the best ways to improve. Choose your story by what interests you enough to keep going, no matter whether you realistically can draw it or not. Once your art improves (and it will) you can always go back and redraw the first pages if you want, but often times seeing the art improve is fun for the audience.
I do agree that you will have to take your art into consideration, but only in the sense it’s better to choose a style that’s fun and/or easy for you to do.
Web comics take so much work, and are nor always very rewarding to make. You need to be able to fall in love with your story, so imo, it’s best to just go with your wild passion project. The skill will catch up. Picking a side project you’re not all that into will very easily turn into a job you aren’t getting paid for.
I'm sorry if you got asked this a lot, but do you have any advice for drawing a webcomic? I have a script for a story already, draw a lot on pen and paper, and am thinking of investing in a tablet to get started, but I'm not sure what a good program to draw/add text to would be. Do you just use Procreate?
i use firealpaca bc it's free and i'm used to it, but lots of people use procreate and do fine. i don't think choice of program is super important, all of the major ones presumably have tutorials on youtube and the thing that really matters is that you have a basic grasp of the tools you're using.

I know we are all used to hear bad news from the USA or UK when it comes to trans rights but this time Germany wants to play in the same league.
Our idiots at home ministry came up with the fucking idea to start a register for all transgender and nonbinary people which would mean every person working at some public position could always at any given time see your assigned gender at birth, your deadname, your address and who knows what else.
We had been there in the past. Hitler Germany called it the "Travestite Law" back then. Our politicians didn't learn.
We all know this is unacceptable.
Please, if you are German, sign it. If you are not, spread it wide and far.
This had been stopped once a few years ago. It needs to be stopped again.

One of the most personal, saddest things about living in America is the summertime.
There is 0 reason for American adults not to have a summer break. I can only say this with a full throat so loud, but other countries have policies and laws that give adults summertime.
It is not a joke to say France is kind of shutdown for August. There are over a dozen countries that have enough mandatory, legally required leave available to take an entire month off, or more. PLUS mandatory PAID holidays.
It's Brazil and Russia (ooh scary BRIC countries outgrowing the US and coming for us). India AND China give up to 2 weeks mandatory vacation leave, plus sick leave on top.
It's Afghanistan (20 days). It's Angola (22). It's Argentina(25) and Armenia (25) and Australia (20). It's Cambodia (technically unlimited; you can eventually get 15 or 17 days per month vacation).
That us on top of mandatory PAID public holidays. Cambodia can somehow manage 27 mandatory paid holidays plus upwards of 18 vacation days per year and going up from there, and we in the US can't even manage mandatory paid holidays.
We don't even get paid on Christmas and Memorial Day. And even trying to convince some people, let alone politicians, that everyone should get paid on Christmas is unfair to compare to pulling teeth.
Please. Please. I want to have a better life. I want you to have a better life.
I want you to not miss Summer Break. Because France and Cambodia don't.
#I’m in Finland#currently on my month long summer vacation#based on my work experience I also get one week of in fall and another in spring#all paid#we also get vacation money which i think is like half of your salary on top of the usual#not getting anything is wild

Respond positively to this pro-trans schools policy for Wales
From my local WhatsApp group:
The Welsh Government are doing a consultation on its pro-trans schools policy. UK Gender Critical activists are upset and are trying to brigade it to push it in an anti-trans direction. Please fill out the consultation to try to reinforce the pro-trans stance. https://www.gov.wales/rights-respect-equality-anti-bullying-guidance
The deadline is 31 July 2025.
NB: Please only respond if you live in Wales! If you don't but want to help, please boost this and share it on other social networks. Thank you. ✨

One aspect of it is probably the level of fame too. While Gaiman was certainly popular, he was nowhere near the level of mainstream appeal HP still has. Even today, years after the last book was published, there’s a whole shelf of just HP books and merch at my local bookstore. Gaiman usually had a few volumes of Norse Mythology or Good Omens stacked in the scifi/fantasy shelves. HP is so fucking huge, even people who don’t care about fantasy know it. How do you kill a beast of that size?
It's impressive how Neil Gaiman vanished from the internet. Wish Rowling would do the same.
#also i think with hp the product has a bigger brand regocnition than the author#while for gaiman its the opposite
