they say hope can save us, heal us but if all this hope has been a hoax all along  is living for a hoax living at all? like icarus  clinging onto the wax on his arms  as he sinks  to the bottom of the ocean would you say he survived the fall?

So many months later and the confession scene is still all I think about. I can’t get over just how human they are in that moment.

Even though Aziraphale has chosen Heaven for the meantime, everything about the conversation between him and Crowley was a human misunderstanding. The idea of Crowley saying all this for the first time, but Aziraphale being blinded by this sudden opportunity, meaning that he so fundamentally misunderstands every word.

Aziraphale is so distracted by the idea that has been planted in his brain, that he can’t hear what Crowley is saying loud and clear.

Meanwhile poor Crowley just tore out his very human beating heart and waved it in front of Aziraphale, only for it to be horribly trodden on because Aziraphale has misunderstood Crowley’s confession as a rejection. Not a rejection of heaven, but a rejection of him.

Aziraphale doesn’t want Crowley to be an angel again, he just wants him to be safe and with him.

Crowley doesn’t want Aziraphale to be anything except beside him.

And goddamn, isn’t that just so very human.

Things I’m relearning

Melons. I’m slowly rediscovering what it means to live in a land of eternal summer. The fruits are sweet because they haven’t been driven thousands of kilometres, local because it’s never not hot.

Listlessness. You have to fight the heat to come back to life. You have to be able to feel anything at all to think and be human. It makes the breaks from it all so, so sweet. It’s why I’ve always loved the rain. For a moment, the clouds block out the heat.

Space. Space means very different things here. Space is mouldable, flexible, movable. It warps and bends, it stretches. Sometimes there is none. Your idea of space must stretch to maintain some sanity. How close is that car? Can you squeeze through that crowd of people? Is that biker going the wrong way? Is there anyone for miles and miles down this highway? Is this city ever truly empty? Space changes.

After Sunday's storm my power was out for 24 hours and the internet was out for 48, so I've been holed up, trying to preserve the last of the cool air, entertaining myself with an old USB drive of downloaded one-season-wonder TV shows on a borrowed laptop with a really good battery (and a generous neighbor with a portable charger who made it last an extra day).

I had to have something to keep myself from fixating on that one H.P. Lovecraft story.
