Friday
(It is ages since I added to my blog so I will try to post some (probably abbreviated) notes to conclude this particular trip.)
Up early and doing the final clearing away of things to enable us to reconnect the van. We had breakfast and as we were packing the toaster and electric jug away under the sink, we discovered a big puddle of water and all the cardboard boxes we use to protect things as we travel were soggy messes. We took everything out and restowed them elsewhere, but we were still not quite sure where the leak was coming from until several days later – a slow leak in the cold water hose that obviously wasn’t cinched up tight enough by the plumber we used in Warragul. We just put an old towel in the cupboard to soak up any further drips as we travelled.
We drove to Bairnsdale where we topped up with cheap(?) fuel and a couple of hours’ worth of shopping, including lunch for the hungry driver and navigator and then drove the lovely road up to Omeo. We love Omeo and have stayed there before and enjoyed it. We loved it even more this time and really need to go back for a more extended stay. A big mob of bikers were camped there but they were relatively quiet overnight and left fairly early (definitely NOT quiet then though – I was concerned that the cliffs may have collapsed on us!) The caravan park is a bit kitch but the birds were friendly and we loved it. We had a good phone catch-up with each of our kids so that was great too.
We were both suffering very badly with hayfeeder. It had been troublesome for several days in Orbost and everyone is saying it is the worst hayfeeder season for many years. I guess that after the fires, all the grasses have had their best opportunity to flourish for a long time so there is a nose-full of pollen absolutely everywhere
Saturday
We drove to Colac Colac via Benambra and Nariel – picturesque, but what a scary road! It was very narrow and pretty rough with lots of mainly small fallen branches to keep us vigilant, but the precipitous edges gave us pause on numerous occasions. We only saw a few other cars – all on our side of the road – but it was very steep and with the caravan on, it was working our car (and its driver) pretty hard. Fortunately, the majority of the road was uphill. It was much more difficult going downhill, riding the overheated brakes so I was constantly shifting down to second and often first gear to slow our 6-tonne passage down the mountain toward Nariel. Despite the challenge of the drive, we enjoyed the scenery and once up on the plateau, the burnt-out forest was largely replaced by open paddocks and idyllic pastoral pursuits.
We got ourselves established in the caravan park but were so wrung out from the drive that we simply enjoyed our Happy Hour in the van and decided to explore the following day.
Sunday
We did very little today. We were still recovering a bit from the challenges of yesterday so spent most of the day in and around the van, getting more organised and catching up on more photos and paperwork.
Monday
We did some washing in the morning, edited more photos and wrote quite a bit. Heather posted quite a lot on Facebook so people could enjoy a bit more of our travels and I walked around the park and explored its birding potential. My hayfeeder was still bad, but I braved the pollen-filled air and saw quite a few birds. The Nariel Creek runs through the park and is quite lovely – very fast-flowing and potentially dangerous, but nobody was swimming anyway.
The park is quite big with extensive green lawns and not many patrons. There were a couple of unpowered areas with workmen enclaves ensconced in biggish groups but few caravans.
After lunch, we drove the 6-7 kilometres into Corryong and I got breathalysed as soon as we arrived. Fortunately, my reading was 0.0 so we were soon on our way again. We parked in town and walked the full length of town on both sides of the main road. Many of the shops were closed, but we went in and explored an old-fashioned emporium and a couple of other establishments, including the Information Centre.
We made a few essential purchases at the supermarket and topped up (and expanded) our range of hayfever meds at the pharmacy, then shared a wonderful icy cold milkshake and sat in the park to drink it.
We cooked another delicious pork roast for dinner and watched a bit more of Justified at night.

Wind power! I love it, some people don’t, but I just think the massive turbines are mesmerising and to think they are creating green power just makes me want to do an air pump! Yes! A rather large wind farm project has been built on Mt Gellibrand in the Western District close to Colac and I just love it! How about you? Love to hear your thoughts about green energy and the like. The Down and Dirty of C Section Recovery.
I had a C-section for the birth of my third child. My two previous births had been vaginal, so I had no idea what to expect. I’d heard stories from friends about how the recovery was tough but nothing could have prepared me for what was to come for a c section recovery after surgery.
Be Prepared For Your C Section Recovery
1. Getting out of bed will hurt like hell.
“Can I get a little help here”
All new Mom’s want to leap into action as soon as they hear their new sweet pea crying. But just try and jump up out of the bed(no, don’t do that) It’s going to hurt. Even if by some medical miracle you’re able to sit up unaided, you’re going to be unsteady on your feet. While you’re in the hospital you’ll have the help of the medical staff and at the push of a button your bed will magically prop you up. But reality hits when you get home and all of a sudden you’re stranded on your own bed like a turtle and you need pee desperately. (Takes out cell and texts Baby Daddy…. “I need help”). “Your doctor will prescribe you pain meds, which you should take,” says Alyssa Quimby, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Southern California to Self magazine. “That’s what they’re there for.” Once you’re home, experiment with rolling onto one side, using pillows or ask your partner to lend a hand when you want to get out of bed.
2. Going potty is petrifying and painful.
“Oh please no, don’t make me pee”
It’s a good job you’ve had nine months to practice your breathing, now is when you’ll actually put it to use. Going to the bathroom after my C-section was probably one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. First, there’s the catheter removal, which is actually not that bad, but it is a little scary. Then there’s the hunched over shuffle to the toilet, then you slowly maneuver yourself onto the pot. You’ll probably feel like you really need to pee badly, but nothing will come out. You’re going to sit there for ages as the nurse hovers outside the door asking how you’re getting on. When finally, after what seems like an eternity, things start to trickle and holy-moly it stings. Dr. Quimby says “It’s totally normal to be irritated and should clear up in a few days”.
As for pooping, nothing is just going to come right out nice and easy. You’re going to have to put a little effort into it. Not only can it feel like you’re going to pop a few stitches, you may not even be able to go.There are a few reasons as to why this happens. Angela Jones, M.D., of AskDrAngela.com says “Pregnancy hormones tend to slow everything down digestive-wise and things don’t just miraculously return to normal immediately after delivery, so if you were having issues with constipation during pregnancy, they are not likely to resolve spontaneously once your baby is delivered.” Also, the pain meds you’ve taken will slow everything down. Taking a little walk will help to get things moving again. Colace is your new best friend.
3. Nursing is awkward AF
“Ummm where am I supposed to put put this baby? I’ve been sliced open exactly where she wants lay.”
“It can be difficult to situate your newborn in a position that you can maintain for upwards of 20 minutes comfortably when you have an incision on your lower abdomen,” Quimby says. “I encourage my patients to play around with different positions. Many find the football hold, where you literally tuck your baby in along your forearm up to your breast like, yup, a football, to be the most comfortable post C-section,” she says. Don’t be afraid to ask your hospital’s lactation consultant for help, that’s what they’re there for. A breastfeeding pillow is great for positioning baby.
4. You’ll have an itch that you can’t scratch
“Somebody please tie my hands down”
Your incision site is going to be itchy. Even after you start to heal you’ll be fighting the urge to have a good scratch. There’ll also be numbness, it’s the weirdest sensation ever and it’s going to last a while. Five years on and I’m still a little numb in spots along my scar. This is because of the surgery. “When your obstetrician cuts through those layers, she may cut some nerves, which can result in the loss of feeling,” says Quimby. It’s not unusual for the numbness to last for several years.
5. Coughing and sneezing will hurt like the dickens.
“Uh oh, I need to sneeze”
Nothing can be quite as terrifying as needing to sneeze after major abdominal surgery. It can feel like you’ve ripped all of those stitches wide open. A little trick that I found worked for me, was to hold a pillow tightly to my tummy as I sneezed. Don’t try to be all cute and do one of those controlled quiet little sneezes, that’s going to hurt more than if you just let it out. Help your c section recovery by letting go of the good manners.
Your throat is probably going to be a little dry afterward and you’re going to cough. The same advice goes here. Hold that pillow tightly and keep a glass of water handy.
A belly band comes in great here too, it holds everything in nice and tight.
6. There will be gas
“Something is stabbing me!”
Because air gets trapped in the abdomen during surgery you’re going to experience shooting gas pains. It pretty much feels like you’re being stabbed by knitting needles. The best way to get rid of this is to walk (I mean shuffle) around your hospital room. Your Dr will probably recommend taking Gas-X, this will help alleviate gas and bloating. Moving your legs around while in bed helps too.
Well, now that I’ve probably terrified you about hour c section recovery, but try not to worry too much, as with most birthing experiences, you’ll probably get over it soon enough!

Navigating Tree Removal Regulations in Portland and Colac
In Portland and Colac, trees play a pivotal role in enhancing urban landscapes, providing not only aesthetic beauty but also crucial environmental benefits like air purification and temperature moderation.
Balancing the growth and maintenance of these green spaces with urban development demands careful consideration. It’s essential to navigate tree removal with an understanding of both the environmental impact and the regulatory framework designed to protect these natural resources, ensuring that urban expansion and tree conservation work hand in hand for sustainable development.
In this blog, we’ll understand how to proceed with tree removal regulations in both these cities.
Tree Removal Regulations
Tree removal in Portland and Colac is designed with regulations to protect urban greenery while allowing for responsible development.
Permits are generally required to remove trees, with criteria focusing on tree health, safety risks, and environmental impact. These regulations aim to ensure that tree removal is considered carefully, balancing the need for urban expansion with the preservation of natural landscapes and biodiversity.
Tree Removal: Permit Process
To apply for a tree removal permit, typically you start by submitting an application to the local council or regulatory body. This application might require details about the tree, such as its species, size, and location, and reasons for its removal.
Documentation such as property maps or photographs of the tree might be needed. There could be a fee for the application associated with the tree removal in Portland, which varies by location.
The assessment process then involves a review of the tree’s health, impact on the environment, and any potential safety concerns. Approval times can vary, and conditions may be attached to the permit.
Protected Trees: Requires Legal Authority Permission
To accurately identify the specific tree species and sizes that are legally protected in Portland and Colac, one would need to consult the local council or government environmental agency’s regulations.
Typically, these regulations protect significant, heritage, or native trees, which could include large specimens, certain species known for their ecological value, or trees of a specific age. Such trees often require special considerations and permissions for removal or pruning to ensure the preservation of the area’s natural heritage and biodiversity.
Penalties for Non-Compliance with Tree Regulations
The legal consequences of unauthorised tree removal in Colac or Portland can include significant fines and the requirement to replant trees. These penalties are designed to deter individuals from bypassing local regulations, which aim to preserve the natural and urban canopy.
Understanding and adhering to these regulations is crucial to avoid such penalties, highlighting the importance of consulting local guidelines or seeking advice from professionals before undertaking any tree removal activities.
Consulting with Certified Arborists
Consulting with certified arborists is essential for ensuring tree work is conducted safely, legally, and effectively. Arborists possess specialised knowledge in tree health, allowing them to diagnose and treat various conditions accurately. They play a crucial role in navigating the permit process, understanding local regulations, and ensuring all work complies with legal requirements.
Additionally, arborists specialising in tree removal in Colac or Portland can offer advice on the best practices for tree care, from pruning to disease prevention safeguarding the health of the trees and the surrounding environment. Their expertise not only ensures the longevity and vitality of trees but also protects property owners from potential legal issues associated with unauthorised tree work.
By leveraging their skills and knowledge, arborists contribute significantly to the preservation of urban and natural landscapes, promoting a harmonious balance between development and environmental conservation.
Environmental Considerations
Trees play a pivotal role in local ecosystems by improving air quality, supporting wildlife, and regulating climate. Their removal can lead to diminished biodiversity and disrupted ecosystems.
Regulations aim to minimise environmental damage by ensuring that tree removal in Colac and Portland is carefully considered and compensated for, often through replanting initiatives to maintain ecological balance and support biodiversity. These measures help preserve the essential functions that trees provide to the environment.
Final Words
Adhering to tree removal regulations is crucial for the well-being of both the community and the environment. Responsible actions by property owners, guided by these regulations in tree removal in Portland or Colac, ensure the protection of our valuable tree canopy, contribute to the sustainability of local ecosystems, and maintain the aesthetic and ecological balance of urban and rural areas.
Compliance with these guidelines fosters a shared responsibility towards environmental stewardship and community safety, underscoring the collective role in preserving natural resources for future generations. Contact Highline Tree Care for best practices and compliant tree removal services.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Grand Tour of Europe was an immersive journey across the continent undertaken by Britain's elites. It was seen as an opportunity to extend one's education by absorbing the best of Europe's art, culture and fine food, and it could entail a two- or three-year commitment to exploring the wonders of Italy, France, Austria and Germany. Whatever the duration, it was also about living the good life, taking your time and, in-between, meeting local nobility, sketching the sights and enjoying sumptuous feasts.
The tradition has vanished in its lavish original form, but Traveller is going to revive it, albeit with some tweaks. Few of us, after all, have the option to take a year or two out like the Grand Tourists of the past but then again, modern transportation allows us cover much more ground in much less time.
Our proposed Grand Tour for the modern age is designed to last about a month: long enough to feel indulgent, but short enough to ensureyou still have a life to return to back home. Our itinerary is also quite different. The Grand Tour of centuries past was designed to showcase eye-opening destinations rich in culture and history. It included places such as Paris, Venice and Rome, which these days are among the most-visited places on the planet. We have chosen a new route through Europe that takes us to dramatically different destinations, from one of Spain's most splendid Moorish cities through Russia's grandest metropolis and deep into Eastern Europe. And, instead of travelling by carriage, our tour relies on flights (although some stretches, such as Helsinki to St Petersburg, can be done by train).
Some of these cities, such as Prague, are popular destinations; others, such as Sofia, remain under-the-radar. Each one embodies a different aspect of European history and culture, and each one has plenty of wonders to admire. Most of these cities, it should be noted, deserve a longer stay than the few days we have allotted. Taken together as an itinerary, however, we hope they offer a new perspective on Europe's many glories.
DAYS 1 TO 3
VALLETTA, MALTA
Europe is crammed with cities founded by kings and queens. Cities founded by warrior monks? Not so much. In fact, Valletta is the only one we can think of. The Knights of St John, like their more famous brethren, the Knights Templar, were originally formed in the 11th century to fight in the Crusades; more than 400 years later they were still going strong. Chased from their base in Rhodes in 1530 by the Ottomans, the Knights moved to Malta and promptly built a grand city to prove their glory was undiminished.
WHAT TO DO
Valletta's steeply-sloping streets, lined with elegant sandstone buildings and surrounded by 28 kilometres of walls, are home to 320 historic monuments – a figure rivalled only by Rome and Jerusalem. Must-visits include the Grand Master's Palace, with its displays of Gobelin tapestries and medieval armour, and St John's Co-Cathedral, one of most over-the-top baroque cathedrals in Europe. Don't miss the cathedral's oratory: on display are some canvases which the grand master – who clearly had an eye for art – commissioned from a hot young artist called Caravaggio.
For the maximum Valletta experience, book into one of the boutique hotels springing up in the city's narrow townhouses. Casa Ellul offers friendly service and gorgeous views from the top floors. Cosy restaurants are tucked into townhouses and dish up local Italian-tinged dishes (rabbit is a specialty). Bookings are recommended for popular venues such as Legligin, a restaurant and wine bar.
DON'T MISS

Malta is so compact you can squeeze the rest of its sights into a day, if necessary. Make sure you take a walk through the 1000-year-old city of Mdina, which retains a distinctly Arabic feel, and visit at least one of Malta's prehistoric sites, perhaps the necropolis at Hal Saflieni. Stop for lunch at Marsaxlokk, a pretty port town with a waterfront lined with brightly-painted wooden boats.

DAYS 4 to 6
SEVILLE, SPAIN
Seville was one of Europe's leading cities for 500 years under Moorish rule; a beacon of learning and beauty at a time when much of Europe was in chaos. When the Castilians conquered the city in 1248, they obliterated many Moorish monuments, including the main mosque – the city's immense cathedral was built on the site, with the mosque's minaret co-opted to serve as the cathedral's bell tower – but enough of a legacy survives to make Seville a fascinating destination.
WHAT TO DO
Seville's Moorish history can be discovered in the whitewashed neighbourhoods of narrow streets that could be transplanted from North Africa, in the splendid orange trees that line its streets and, above all, in the breathtaking Alcazar. Originally built as a fort for the Caliph of Andalucia, the building – with its entrancing interiors and elegant gardens, featured in Game of Thrones as the water gardens of Dorne – has served as a royal residence for more than 1000 years and remains Seville's unmissable attraction.
In a quirky twist, having expelled the Moors, Seville's new Christian rulers were so taken by their architecture and its exquisite detailing, its arched colonnades, its fountains and its intricate tilework, that they created a new style of architecture called Mudejar, which mixed Moorish and Gothic elements. Mudejar monuments can be seen right across town, from the impressive Palacio de los Marqueses de la Algaba to the city's most sumptuous lodgings, the Hotel Alfonso XIII.
DON'T MISS
Tapas is a local tradition. Start the nightat Seville's oldest eatery, the 350-year-old El Rinconcillo, before heading to the cutting-edge Ovejas Negras, which serves inventive plates such as squid with lettuce sauce.

Strasbourg, France. Photo: Sorin Colac / Alamy Stock Photo
DAYS 7 TO 9
STRASBOURG, FRANCE
Strasbourg was one of the grandest cities of the Middle Ages and a stroll through its ancient streets offers a virtual open-air museum of European architecture. Highlights range from the 1000-year-old cathedral to the imposing 18th-century palaces such as the Palais Rohan and the Hotel de Hanau.
WHAT TO DO
Start with those historic streetscapes. Perched on an island with the river Ile looping around it protectively, Strasbourg's setting is as picturesque as the city itself, with its half-timbered houses, willow-lined embankments and chimney pots topped with storks' nests. If you have artistic inclinations, you might feel inspired by the example of the original Grand Tourists to make some sketches of beautifully-preserved areas, such as Petite France, formerly the tanners' quarters and now also the location of some of the city's best hotels, such as the lovely Régent Petite France.
If you prefer looking at art to making it, immerse yourself in world-class art in the city's excellent museums. Top picks include the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, displaying works by Rodin and Picasso; the Musée des Beaux-Arts for the masterpieces by Giotto, Botticelli and Rubens; and a magnificent collection of medieval art at the Musée de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame.
DON'T MISS
Lovers of fine food and wine will enjoy Alsace's distinctive regional cuisine. The area's German heritage is in evidence, with choucroute (sauerkraut) and onion tart featuring heavily on local menus. There are some excellent fine dining options, including the acclaimed Au Crocodile, but for something more casual, try tarte flambée. This pizza-like flatbread is often topped with crème fraiche, onions and smoked ham. Wash it all down with some of the excellent local rieslings and gewürztraminers.

DAYS 10 TO 13
HELSINKI, FINLAND
They don't teach much Nordic history in our schools, and you can see why. After the end of the Viking Ages, nothing much seemed to happen here for 1000 years or so until the mid-20th century, when the Nordic countries were suddenly unveiled as design powerhouses. Helsinki makes it onto this itinerary not just for its architectural highlights, but as an example of a city where good design is woven into every aspect of everyday life.
WHAT TO DO
Helsinki is packed with superb examples of design and architecture, but the locals don't make a big deal of it. Tell someone you're a fan of architect Alvar Aalto and they may recommend you visit his Finlandia Hall, a striking concert venue clad in asymmetric panels of glittering marble. Or they may send you to the local Iittala glassware store, where a number of Alto-designed vases are available. In Finland, a well-designed vase is as worthy of admiration as a monumental piece of architecture.
Nonetheless, there are some architectural masterpieces you should not miss, including the monumental train station, designed by Eliel Saarinen. The atmospheric Temppeliaukio Church is a subterranean building with rock walls and a copper-clad ceiling. Check if there are any concerts taking place here during your stay; the acoustics are terrific. The family homes of architects Alvar Aalto and Eliel Saarinen are also worth a visit. (Saarinen designed almost every element in his family home, Hvitträsk, from the tiles to the pint-sized tables and chairs for his children), while the neighbourhoods of Katajanokku and Kruunerhaken contain a magnificent collection of art nouveau buildings.
Helsinki's newest hotel is the centrally-located Hotel St George, built around a winter garden. For a memorable meal, try Restaurant Jord, the more affordable sibling of Helsinki's best restaurant, Ask. Top picks include Finnish classics such as crepes with smoked lingonberry jam and pike perch served with grilled leeks.
DON'T MISS
In Helsinki's sprawling Design District, you can discover the latest local talent alongside design giants such as Iittala and Artek.

If you enjoy imperial excess, St Petersburg, the showcase city of the Romanov dynasty, is the place to go. Some people find that Petersburg's over-the-top splendour brings out their inner revolutionary but, no matter where you stand on the politics, the beauty of this city – conjured up out of the marshland by Peter the Great – is impossible to deny.
WHAT TO DO
St Petersburg is packed with spectacular buildings, from the imperial residences to the dazzling interiors of the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. However, it is not just monuments that are eye-catching here; in Petersburg, even the grocery stores are exercises in elegance. (Check out the Eliseyev Emporium if you don't believe us.)
St Petersburg is also a cultural heavyweight. Attending a performance at the flamboyant Mariinsky theatre, whether ballet, opera or symphony, is a must. If you have never been able to work your through any of the Russian literary classics, book a table at Café Idiot – named after the Dostoevsky book – and feast on Russian classic cuisine instead.
When it comes to accommodation, Petersburg is one of those cities where it pays to go as grand as your budget will bear. We love the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, which has an inhouse caviar bar.
DON'T MISS
Allow at least a day to explore the Hermitage Museum, where the artistic treasures on display – everything from ancient Scythian gold treasures to Rembrandts, Picassos and Matisses – are rivalled by the interiors of what was once the imperial family's Winter Palace, with its malachite columns and gilded mouldings.

DAYS 18 to 20
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
Much of the glory that is Prague was the vision of one man: Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and Czech king, who was determined to build one of the most impressive cities on earth. He succeeded so well that, more than six centuries later, Prague still dazzles.
WHAT TO DO
There is plenty to admire in Prague's historic heart, from its towering castle and elaborate bridges to the picturesque Old Town Square. Not all of Prague's glories are ancient, however. The city remains committed to culture – perhaps not so surprising when you remember that these are the people who elected a playwright to the position of president. In addition to its remarkable collection of public sculpture (look for the avantgarde works of David Cerny), Prague has embraced modern architecture, most famously in the form of Frank Gehry's Dancing Buildings, towers that lean towards each other like tango dancers.
Maintain the historic mood with a stay at the Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa, housed in a 16th-century palace and dripping with gilt and red velvet. For a meal with a view, book a table at the Bellevue restaurant, where you can gaze at Prague castle while enjoying elegantly-executed Bohemian fare. A more rustic alternative is the old-school U Medvidku Pub, where you can savour what may be the city's signature dish: pork with dumplings, sauerkraut and pilsener.
DON'T MISS
The city where Mozart, Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek and Mahler all wrote and performed has melodies coursing through its veins. Catch a concert at the neo-classical Rudolfinum, home to the acclaimed Czech Philharmonic; if you visit during the annual Prague Spring festival, you can also enjoy performances in a range of atmospheric venues, from churches to the St Agnes convent.

DAYS 21 TO 23
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
If Prague has a rival in the grandeur stakes, it would have to be Budapest, a city gifted a solid dose of glamour by those renowned urban planners, the Habsburg emperors.
WHAT TO DO
Start on the Danube's west bank in the royal quarter of Buda with the soaring gothic glory of St Matthias Church, the coronation venue for several Habsburg emperors, including the mighty Franz Joseph and the ill-fated last emperor, known in Hungary as Charles IV and in Austria as Charles I. Equally impressive is Budapest Castle, which houses the Hungarian National Gallery's superb collection of medieval, Renaissance and baroque stonework, sculptures and painting.
On the east bank, Pest's grandest monuments include the extraordinary 691-room Parliament building, the gilt-tripping Hungarian State Opera House and the lovely Gresham Palace. This beautiful building was originally built for – of all things – an insurance company; in the hands of Four Seasons, it has become one of the city's best hotels.
Budapest is not all about its monuments, however; its lovely streetscapes make this a great place to get lost. Start your explorations in the riverside Pest neighbourhood of Lipótváros and follow your feet: whichever direction you head in, you will discover grand squares, wide boulevards, and plenty of eye-catching architecture, ranging from belle epoque to art deco to Bauhaus.
DON'T MISS
Our vote for essential Budapest experience is an afternoon spent in one of its grand cafes. Take a seat in Café Gerbeaud or the Central Café, order up a glass of tokay wine and slice of cake – perhaps two, if you can't decide between the hazelnut-heavy Eszterhazy torta, or the buttercream-laden dobos torte – and know that you are enjoying the best that Budapest has to offer.

DAYS 24 TO 26
SOFIA, BULGARIA
If you are asking yourself, "Sofia? What on earth can I do there?", consider yourself a victim of the Cold War. During the years that eastern Europe was locked away behind the Iron Curtain, countries such as Bulgaria slipped from our collective consciousness, which is why most of us are oblivious to Sofia's rich history and heritage.
WHAT TO DO
Among the things you probably don't know about Sofia: it has an entire Roman city buried beneath its streets. Nine thousand square metres of Roman ruins have now been unearthed, creating an open-air museum filled with ancient streets and houses, baths and basilicas.
After the Romans, Sofia's history gets complicated. There are stints of rule by the Byzantines and Ottomans, as well as not one but two Bulgarian Empires, all of which left behind mighty monuments. Some are rightly celebrated, such as the Boyana Church with its vivid, lifelike 800-year-old frescoes. Others are harder to find. Few relics of Ottoman rule survive: one is the former mosque that now houses the National Archaeological Museum, worth a visit in its own right.
Bulgaria's culinary heritage is also worth exploring. Book a table at Bagri, a contemporary restaurant showcasing traditional foods and supporting small farmers. Hotel-wise, the Grand Hotel Sofia, which has a convenient location and excellent service, is among the city's best.
DON'T MISS
It is astonishing to think that, 2000 years after they founded the city that became Sofia, you can still find traces of the long-vanished Thracian people. Take a trip out of town to Kazanlak, where you can visit a 2000-year-old beehive tomb, decorated with richly coloured frescoes that illustrate the remarkably sophisticated lifestyles enjoyed by the Thracian elite.

DAYS 27 TO 30
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
True, only half of the city lies in Europe; the far shore of Istanbul is technically part of Asia. Yet this city has played a key role in so many European empires – under various names, including Byzantium and Constantinople – that it is a must for anyone interested in history.
WHAT TO DO
Istanbul is a city that has been shaped by great men. Take, for instance, the awe-inspiring Aya Sofiya, built as the grandest church in Christendom by one of the great Byzantine emperors, Justinian, then converted into a mosque by the Ottoman sultan who conquered the city, Mehmed the Conqueror. Or take the exquisite Sulemaniye mosque, built by the mighty Suleiman the Magnificent, its interiors soaring vertically in a manner reminiscent of the most striking Gothic architecture.
Not all of Istanbul's local heroes have won a lasting place in the history books, however. Nearly everyone who visits Istanbul walks past the landmark Galata Tower; few, however, know the tower was the launching point for the 17th-century Ottoman aviator Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi, who flew across the Bosphorus in the first flight with artificial wings.
For a room close to the heart of the action, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet takes some beating; from its terrace, guests get a ringside view of the city's most magnificent sights, including the Aya Sofiya and the Blue Mosque. Just a short walk away you will also find one of the city's best fish restaurants, Balikci Sabahattın.
DON'T MISS
The legendary wealth of the Ottoman sultans is on display at Topkapi Palace, where the exhibits include spectacular jewels, royal robes and an eclectic collection of religious relics that includes John the Baptist's hand and hairs from Muhammad's beards.

[Warning: the reals + wrinkly stomach pics ahead. Proceed with caution]
Hi friends! Thank you again for all of your kind wishes and comments on the post about my surgery. I was overwhelmed with all of your support and genuinely appreciate those who took time to leave a comment here, on Instagram, and Facebook. It can always been a little daunting to put yourself out there on social media, especially when you feel vulnerable, and you always wrap me up in kindness and love. Thank you for being so wonderful.
You can read more about why I got my breast implants removed and diastasis recti repaired here. (<— classified as a full abdominoplasty because my ab separation was all the way up, and I had loose skin above and below my belly button.)
While I was recovering, I chipped away at this post with some things that came to mind. There are some tips mixed in with my personal experience, and as always, please remember that only we can make the best decisions for ourselves and our health, with our doctor’s guidance.
Day 1 (Day of surgery): I’m shaking as my alarm goes off. Quickly, I shower, get dressed (in a plaid shirt and comfy shorts I’ll end up wearing for 2 days), and head with Tom to the surgery center. The Dr marks me up with Sharpie, we take pictures, and before I know it, I’m on the operating table, getting my happy juice before I doze off to Dreamland. My body tends to want to fight off anesthesia, so the second they start “lightening” the amount, I WAKE UP. On the OR table. Every around me assures me that it’s over, but I’m still trying to talk (I have no voice from the tube that was down my throat) and also trying to Hulk myself off the table. (My wrists are strapped down.) I’m pretty sure people wake up in recovery? I was wide awake as they lifted me onto the other roll table thing -I did watch Grey’s Anatomy but my brain isn’t helping me remember what it’s called- and wheeled into the recovery room. Tom comes in to keep me company, and my entire body is shaking from the anesthesia. I tell the nurse that I’m in a lot of pain, and she gives me Demerol. It relaxes me a little TOO much, my blood pressure starts to plummet, and they have to quickly give me fluids. In a few minutes, I’m feeling ok again, and talking to the Dr.
Good thing Tom is there because I can’t remember a single thing we discussed. I just remember my blood pressure crashing, getting the fluids, the shaking/doom feeling going away, and drinking ginger ale. I hadn’t had ginger ale in SO LONG and it’s pretty much the best post-surgery drink ever. So bubbly, sweet, and refreshing.
We head back to the hotel where a wheelchair is waiting, and straight into bed for a long nap. When I wake up, I’m actually feeling pretty great. I eat some nice and salty gluten-free crackers, drink more ginger ale, and we order room service and watch movies.
My recovery timeline:
Day 2-4: The very hardest days. In the middle of the night after my first day post-op, I wake up in SEARING pain. I’d stayed on top of all of my pain pills and muscle relaxers, and wake up having to count down until my next dose. It was pretty terrible. These couple of days are a blur of naps, reading a bit, and watching movies, in addition to getting up every hour or so (hunched over) to walk around the room for 5 minutes so I can move my legs. (<— Doc suggested this to prevent blood clots, and Tom also has to give me daily Lovenox injections to prevent clots for 7 days.) We order a lot of room service and Postmates, since I don’t end up leaving the hotel room the entire time we’re there.
(I’ve never watched so much TV in my entire life)
We have my post-op appointment on day three, and drive home. We stop every hour and walk around -it’s quite a sight hunched over with my compression socks on- and make it home to madre and the girls. The girls know I have an owie and can’t pick them up yet, and they’re super gentle and sweet. I’m SO thankful my mom can stay with us for two weeks. She and Tom end up doing everything around the house and for Liv and P, while also taking care of me. Every time I think about everything they’re doing, it makes me start to tear up because I feel so overwhelmed with gratitude and how fortunate I am to have them in my life. There’s literally no way I can do anything functional at this point; I need help getting out of bed and shuffle around, either to the kitchen, the bathroom, or back to bed.
Day 5-10: Each day, I start to feel a little bit more *normal* and can stand a little more straight. I spend a lot of time on the couch (the girls can snuggle with me and I’ll read them books or watch movies with them), or in bed taking naps. By this point, I’m starting to get bored, and also missing be able to spend all day going on adventures and playing with the girls. I take a break from my binder and super tight sports bra each night to let everything air out, and massage my belly with arnica gel and coconut oil. We watch a lot of movies, and I sleep a lot.
Tom also takes the drains out from my breasts, which is intense. It’s almost like minor surgery haha. The doctor showed him how to do it since he wanted to spare us another drive to Atlanta and back, and as soon as the drains are gone, I feel RELIEF. It makes it much easier to move around and take a shower. I still have my belly drain, but 1 drain compared to 3 is pure bliss.
Day 10, I make the switch to Tylenol because I only have 2 pain pills left -I feel like I need to save them in case the pain gets worse- and it’s kind of a rough day. I’m extra sore and tired. I spend a little more time lying on the couch, snoozing, and taking breaks to walk around and shake my legs out. I’m glad I switch to Tylenol because the pain meds were seriously messing up my stomach. (I won’t go into details but I took probiotics twice a day, Colace 3x a day, ate prunes and drank Smooth Move tea.. and things were still not ok.)
By Day 13: I feel SO much better. I feel more mobile, I’m able to contribute more to our family (I can make quick snacks and meals for the girls.. and for myself) and we took my belly drain out, so I’m drain-free! Taking a shower minus the drains is AMAZING. We head to my post-op appointment and get so much good news. Everything is healing as it should be, and I can start to transition carefully towards move normal activities. I can also ditch the binder and wear Spanx instead (I order a couple of these from Amazon), drink alcohol (YEAH), start to add in gentle walking around the block, and massage everything with Vitamin E. This appointment makes me feel so relieved that everything is doing what it should be.
Week 3: I continue to feel better, but feel tired and swollen by the end of the day. I’m wearing these Spanx during the day, and my binder during the night. I’m surprised by how awesome it feels to have my abs back together. Everything feels like it’s back in place. Before it felt like my stomach was always pushing out. I thought I’d be sad that I can’t work out by this point, but I can’t even imagine going to the gym. (Not that I would go early, but I thought I’d feel good enough that I’d be sad I’d have to wait. Nope. Not even close to feeling ready.)
Week 4: I’m back into my daily activity levels, and it feels awesome. I’m still walking pretty slowly, and tend to do almost everything in slow motion, but I can take Liv to school and pick her up, make all of the girls’ meals, fold and put away laundry, and get some computer work done without feeling like I need a nap halfway through. I’m still wearing my Spanx (starting to transition to that at night instead of the binder), and my sports bra, and using arnica and coconut oil on my torso. I’m waiting for my surgical glue to come off until I start using the Vitamin E on my incisions.
I take a walk around the block.. in slow motion… and am super tired afterwards.
Week 5: I’m cleared to lift P again, and life changes. I feel like I can do everything I need to do -it was SO HARD to have to bring P to the couch every time she wanted me to pick her up and hold her. She’d have to crawl onto my lap instead- and while I’m still being careful, I’m pumped about it. I start to walk around the block more often, because I’ll be cleared to exercise the next week, and will need to start teaching again the week after that. I feel like I can definitely teach at this point, and will just need to spend way more time coaching than doing the actual exercises.
Week 6: I’m cleared to work out again! The doc said to take it easy to start, and avoid super heavy weight lifting, dedicated core work and insane things for another 6 weeks. For now, I’m just excited to do some jogging and barre. He also says I can stop wearing Spanx 24/7 and just wear it during workouts and if I feel more swollen/puffy that day. This is my first week teaching, and while I only do maybe 10% of the class, it’s really hard. I’ve lost a lot of my strength and flexibility.
Week 7-8: Since we evacuate to Atlanta to escape Hurricane Irma, I book an appointment just to get everything checked out and have a couple of questions answered. There is a small part on the center of my scar he might revise next year -apparently revision is no big deal and done with local anesthesia and very little downtime, but I’m REALLY hoping it flattens out on its own- as well as two small dog ears. These are hard to avoid, and it’s like a puffy/fatty area at the ends of the incision. I’d prefer to stay far away from a scalpel from now on, so I’m crossing my fingers that I heal well and all of the residual scar puffiness goes the heck away.
The good news is that I’m cleared to lift weights again (wahoo!) and everything is healing as it should be. He gives me some silicone strips to try out for scar healing, so we’ll see how they go.
From now on, I just hope everything continues to heal well and that I continue to feel better and more normal. <3
Let’s talk about a few things:
-Pain pills. Whenever I have a medical procedure, I take the pain pills for a couple of days and then wean onto Tylenol instead. I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I ended up needing almost every single pain pill they gave me. I took them for 9 days, and took all of my muscle relaxers, and can’t imagine taking anything less. This recovery stuff is not for the birds.
-Recovery smoothie. I didn’t have much of an appetite for the first few days, but even after I was eating like normal-ish again, I continued to have this smoothie almost every day:
-1 1/2 cups almond milk
-1 scoop vanilla protein
-1 scoop collagen
-spinach
-1-2 tablespoons almond butter (or 1 tablespoon almond butter + 1 tablespoon MCT oil)
-1/2 cup frozen cauliflower
-lots of cinnamon
-ice
It was so refreshing and was an easy way to pack in a lot of nutrients at once.
-Drains. I’m in a couple of Facebook groups so I can lurk/learn about these procedures, and so many people would complain about their drains. The first day, I was like, “Why are they complaining? The drains are kind of annoying but not so bad.” By like Day 2, I got it. They were terrible. They ached at night and it was so hard to get comfortable. The sites where the drains came out ached whenever they were bumped or moved, and draining them was just nasty. Thankfully Tom did it for me for at least the first 5 days since he’s not grossed out by that stuff. Something that helped me shower was to get a lanyard, clip the drains to it, and they would just hang around my neck. Showering is terrible for the first couple of weeks. Since I couldn’t lift my arms -I got a lift with my explant- my mom and Tom had to help with washing my hair or scrubbing myself. The things we do.
-Must-haves. Extra sports bra (I had to keep them compressed for 2 weeks after my explant and lift), an extra belly binder to wear while you’re washing the other one, and soft camisoles. The binders are SO itchy, and you can wear a camisole underneath. I also rubbed arnica gel on my stomach (not by the wounds) and top of my chest to help with swelling. I also highly recommend Arnica gel for bruising and swelling. Pineapple contains bromelain, which is also supposed to help with swelling. I didn’t take the bromelain supplements, but made an effort to drink pineapple juice and eat fresh pineapple in the first few days.
I also had this wedge pillow for sleeping in bed and it was clutch. (For tummy tucks, they generally recommend sleeping in a recliner or reclined chair position with knees bent and head/shoulders elevated. We don’t have a recliner, but the wedge pillow was perfect. I just used that with a regular pillow on top, and two pillows under my knees.)
All of my must-haves for each type of recovery are listed at the bottom of this post.
-Recovery and time sleeping/resting. This is so crucial, and as mamas, it can be SO hard to do. This is why it’s important to enlist help during this time. You don’t want to try to be a hero, do too much, and set yourself up for complications (like fluid build-up or tearing muscle repairs). It’s boring and hard to sit still. Also, I found that even though I was sitting and resting a lot, I didn’t have a ton of mojo to get work done or write. It’s different to be resting when you need to rest compared to resting because it feels good to just chill.
I had a lot of help with the girls since I couldn’t lift P for 5 weeks. Madre was here for the first 2, then we had a babysitter while Tom was at work. The good news is that our babysitters are amazing, so it never felt awkward with them here while I was here. When P was napping and Liv was at school, we’d chat and watch Netflix together. It was SO HARD to not pick up my babies, and childcare backup was expensive, but worth it to avoid complications. The good news is that even though I couldn’t lift the girls, we could still snuggle together. We spent a lot of time on the couch, curled up in a blanket, or I’d sit on the floor and read books or play dolls with them.
-The roller coaster of emotions. My doctor told me that my muscle repair would hurt so much that I wouldn’t even notice my breast pain, and he was exactly right. My breasts felt awesome immediately after getting the implants out. I knew I made the right decision, despite the large scars and the drains. They had ached and burned for so long that the pain from surgery was nothing compared to how I felt before! It was sweet, sweet relief. I felt light, pain-free, and SO happy.
With my abdominal repair, I doubted myself around day three. I still couldn’t easily get out of bed by myself, could hardly walk, had sneezed (THE WORST), had an enormous scar, and was wondering if I’d made the right choice. It got into my head a little -I just wanted to feel good and be able to take care of the girls- but within a few days, as the scar began to heal and I realized how awesome my abs feel together again, I knew it was worth it. The smooth skin is a welcomed improvement, and I’m glad I decided to go for it.
Before and After pics
I wasn’t originally planning on posting before/after pics, but in my last post, I received quite a few requests to share them. While I was researching these procedures, it helped me tremendously to see pictures of the healing process, so I’m going to share them for those who have asked. It was also helpful for me to see pics of people who had this procedure who had loose skin from childbirth, and ab bulging from the DR. When I saw these types of pictures, and read their stories about how great they felt afterwards, it was reassuring to me.
Please keep in mind that I’m a human, with real feelings. While dissenting opinions and thoughtful conversation is always encouraged on the blog, comments that are posted for the sake of personal attack (against myself or others who weigh in) will be removed.

–Wedge pillow (while drains are still in, or until Dr says you can lie flat)
–Soft camisole to wear under the compression bra
–Bralettes and wireless bras (after healing and Dr gave the ok to ditch the sports bra. This is my very fave.)
Abdominoplasty:
–Wedge pillow
–Spanx camisole
–Spanx leotard (I got two of these and LOVE them)
-Faja (this one can be strapless which is nice if you want to wear an off-shoulder top or dress. It’s also very tight and supportive. Not as soft and comfy as the Spanx but does the trick.)
–Vitamin E
-Coconut oil
-Foods on hand that don’t need to be prepared (or were prepped in advance and frozen!), and snacks, like dried fruit, ginger ale, coconut water, and bars
–Arnica
-Soft leggings and comfy pajamas

John Cena proposes to girlfriend Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33
yahoo
Love was clearly in the air at WrestleMania 33.
WWE stars John Cena and Nikki Bella, who have been dating since 2012, got engaged in the middle of the ring in front of tens of thousands of fans at the WWE’s biggest event of the year.
Following their match against The Miz and Maryse, Cena stopped the crowd and dropped to one knee before asking Bella to marry him.
“This. This is what you wanted,” Cena said after celebrating the victory alongside his girlfriend Bella. “Over a year ago you broke your neck and wanted to come back because you wanted a WrestleMania moment.”
“I promised I would tell you when the time is right,” Cena said, referring to having asked Bella about getting married prior to her surgery in 2016.
“I have been waiting so long to ask you this,” Cena said. “Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace, will you marry me?”

Bella nodded yes and sealed the deal with a kiss.
Prior to the match, Cena and Bella each approached and hugged Cena’s mother, Carol, who was seated ringside for the match. After the match and proposal the two went over and shared a moment again with Cena’s mother as well as Bella’s mother Kathy and brother J.J.
Cena’s reluctance to propose played a central role in the buildup for the WrestleMania match. In addition to Miz and Maryse – who are married to each other in real life – parodying the recently very public relationship, Cena and Bella’s personal life has been a part of the WWE’s reality shows “Total Divas” and “Total Bellas” on E! Cena has famously been against both getting married and having children.

Cena has been with the WWE since 2002, rising to be the face of the company and winning a record-tying 16 world championships. Bella started appearing regularly on WWE in 2008 alongside her twin sister Brie (real name: Brianna Monique Garcia-Colace).
The upcoming nuptials between the two makes it a trio of wrestling couples in the Bella family. In addition to Cena and Nikki, Brie is married to current WWE personality Daniel Bryan (real name: Bryan Danielson) and their mother Kathy is married to former WWE star John Laurinaitis.
