Bernie Parent's tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs was brief but memorable. He joined the team on January 31, 1971, following a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers that sent Bruce Gamble and Mike Walton the other way. Parent’s arrival in Toronto paired him with legendary goaltender Jacques Plante.

During the remainder of the 1970-71 season, Parent appeared in 18 games, posting a respectable 2.66 goals-against average. In the playoffs, he played four games against the New York Rangers, recording a 2-2 record and allowing nine goals.

The 1971-72 season was Parent's only full campaign in Toronto, and he played a pivotal role in the team’s push for the postseason. He appeared in 47 regular-season games, achieving a 2.57 goals-against average, three shutouts, and an impressive .915 save percentage. Despite playing on a team that narrowly avoided being the league's lowest-scoring squad, Parent frequently faced over 30 shots per game. Ironically, the Flyers, his former team, held the league’s lowest scoring record that season.

Thanks to Parent's stellar goaltending, the Maple Leafs ended the season with a narrow +1 goal differential, scoring 209 goals while allowing 208. Toronto clinched the final playoff spot in the East Division, finishing four points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings. However, their postseason run was cut short as they fell to the Boston Bruins in five games.

The Shutouts

Parent recorded three shutouts during the 1971-72 season. One standout performance occurred on February 23, 1972, in a 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Parent stopped all 34 shots he faced, while Jim Rutherford turned aside 38 of 40 shots for Pittsburgh. Brad Selwood scored the game-winning goal on a power play, assisted by Dave Keon and Jim Harrison.

Earlier in the season, Parent and Vancouver Canucks goalie Dunc Wilson both earned shutouts in a thrilling 0-0 draw. Wilson made 34 saves, while Parent had a quieter evening with just 20 shots against.

Parent’s third shutout came in a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings, where he stopped 23 shots. A young Billy Smith allowed four goals on 28 shots for the Kings. Ron Ellis scored the game-winner just 3:37 into the contest, assisted by Dave Keon.

Biggest Win of 1971-72

One of Parent’s most significant victories that season came on January 15, 1972, when the Maple Leafs hosted the New York Rangers at Maple Leaf Gardens. Parent made 42 saves, allowing three goals, to help Toronto secure a 4-3 win. Dave Keon scored the decisive goal with just 23 seconds left, assisted by Billy MacMillan.

Leaving Toronto and Building a Legacy

After the 1971-72 season, Parent left the NHL to join the World Hockey Association for its inaugural 1972-73 season. He returned to Philadelphia to play for the Blazers but spent only one year in the WHA before rejoining the NHL with the Flyers. His return marked the beginning of a historic run with the "Broad Street Bullies," helping Philadelphia secure back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.

Parent’s NHL career spanned from 1965-66 to 1978-79, during which he played 608 regular-season games and 71 playoff contests with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Philadelphia Flyers. A two-time Conn Smythe Trophy and Vezina Trophy winner, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.

Aleena and Jules - The Story of Sonic's parents

[Part 1] [Part 2]

Princess Aleena is born as the only child and heir to the throne of aged King Maurice the Hedgehog of the Kingdom of Mobius and his second, much younger wife. The king's long worry to have a successor is finally over, and the kingdom cheers for them. From the start Aleena is raised to be the future queen.

At the same time, the Oracle of Delphius reveals a prophecy about the 'Champion of Chaos' who will be born within the royal bloodline.

At these times, magic is still used widely and daily. Especially within the royal family magic gifts are common. Aleena has a special affinity to music, which influences her use of magic. She is taught in these things as much as in state affairs.

To secure the succession further, Aleena is bethrothed at six years old already, to the two years older Jules the Hedgehog, youngest son to a noble baron loyal to the king. This union is arranged, but the two have time to get to know each other over the years, and are madly in love as teenagers already. They often talk about their future together.

Jules has an immediate younger sister, Bernadette, and an older brother, Charles, who is a highly intelligent inventor, but crippled by a terrible injury from an accident. Aleena, immensly sheltered in her childhood and grown up quite alone, wins through Jules not just a fiancee, but also a brother and a sister. [Chuck and Bernie character designs]

King Maurice dies, not entirely unexpected. Aleena, at 17, has to be crowned and married off early. There is a brilliant celebration in honour of the wedding and crowning ceremony, and the people cheer for their young king and queen, who promise a new era to the kingdom.

Even before their crowning, Aleena and Jules have made trips into the kingdom, alone or together, to mingle with the people and listen to their problems. They continue this after they become official rulers, and the people love them. Aleena is a beautiful, sympathetic and smart young woman, who proves early on that she can make well throught-out decisions and push them through. Her husband is a dashing young knight who stays by her side no matter what. For the people they are the ideal royal couple.

Still, they don't have it easy. The court is mostly run by older, more experienced men who don't liked being ordered around by children, and want to keep their own power at any price. They believe the young queen to be easily manipulated for their own game, but with Jules as support Aleena manages after a while to establish her own politics, with advisors she trusts.

A little over a year after the wedding, the royal triplets are born; Prince Maurice II., Prince Manic and Princess Sonia. The people are happy, about the heirs to the throne, and about the king and queens obvious joy and happiness. Aleena and Jules are more than proud, everyone can see, and they show the babies around any chance they get.

Because of her magical affinity to music, Aleena creates three amulets from her own magic, to gift to her children once they are older.

Everything is perfect.

Until Dr. Robotnik appears.

I finally got around to watching Elemental (2023) and I do think those that were describing it as an immigrant story were accurate. It is also a love story, like the marketing said, but you can't disentangle Ember's experience in the story from her family being diaspora.

But what struck me most about the film is that it's one of the only recent pieces of media I've seen, both in Disney and outside of it, that depicts generational trauma in a way that is fundamentally kind to the previous generation (parents, grandparents, etc).

In most other versions of stories like this I've seen lately, for the (immigrant, usually some variety of Asian, and it is clear that the Lumen family is inspired by multiple Asian cultural influences) parents/grandparents, even if we understand why they behave a certain way, it usually frames that generation as restrictive, oppressive, and perhaps even knowingly upsetting the younger generation. And yes, there are parents that do that. I understand the benefit of telling that story.

However, there are also immigrant families like Ember's. Where you have a family that supports you, that treats you kindly. But even still, you carry the weight of what has happened to them, an indebtedness that you can't ever repay. Bernie, Ember's father, doesn't want to force Ember to do anything. But he carries his hopes for her future, and Ember in turn responds by behaving in the way she thinks would make her parents most happy. So though they have this loving dynamic, the conflict is not in their personality, but in that weight they are both carrying. And that is a story I find relatable as an immigrant, and one that I thought was a standout point in this film.

12. What's the funniest or craziest AU idea you've ever come up with?

If I'm going with published works only. It's gotta be the AU where I made Kate Stewart (Doctor Who) the twin sister of Bernie Wolfe (Holby City). I thought it was a fun idea, but fanfic dot net did not lol so I never bothered migrating it over to ao3.

13. What's a character or ship you haven't written/drawn yet but would like to some day?

I have 2 answers. Mirandy and Spaceparents. The former I have never published for (all my ideas end up being multi chapter epics that get abandoned 3 days after starting) and the latter, I've only once done something but it is now lost to the ether. I think I want to read more of them before I write for them.

i really like the idea that when jules was younger he was basically just sonic. like sonic picked up on all of the things jules left behind when he got older/roboticized but perhaps Even Worse so jules and bernadetta have to deal with this frankly feral and untamable mini-jules that has to be unleashed (let out of the house) every five minutes or else the entire living room is about to become the aftermath of some untold battle
