“Block 10″ Residential Building, Wilhelmstrasse 36-38 / Kochstrasse 1-4, Berlin, Germany [1981-1988] _ Architect: Aldo Rossi _ Photos by Spyros Kaprinis [27.01.2023].
“As part of the IBA 87 (International Building Exhibition) in Berlin, the Italian architect Aldo Rossi was given the opportunity to design a large residential and commercial building. The building is located in Block 10 in the southern Friedrichstadt. This large town block is bounded by Friedrichstrasse, Kochstrasse, Wilhelmstrasse and Puttkamerstrasse. At a short distance from the Berlin Wall, this block had been left incomplete in the 1970s, and only a few buildings were constructed in the interior of the block. As in the case of other interventions in southern Friedrichstadt, the restoration of the historical structure was an important goal also for the project by Aldo Rossi. It was requested to preserve the continuity of the street front, while at the same time architectural diversity had to be offerd with this residential construction. The materialization was chosen with regard to the Berlin building tradition of the nineteenth century. The red clinker façade is structured by the stripes of yellow clinker and the green window lintels. The staircases are visible from the exterior, appearing as incisions in the façade, covered with green metal panels. The white windows are square, and are divided by rungs into smaller squares. Extensive façade glazing has been installed on the Wilhelmstrasse for soundproofing. The building corner is dominated by an oversized column, acting as a space sculpture. With this geometrically rigorous design, Aldo Rossi has realized an extremely appealing building. In the courtyard of the block, various areas of use and play as well as tenant gardens were created.”

Saw two of my mutuals reblog this. So know it's my calling to info dump on here bc I literally had this place in my last history lecture lmao Ok so this is the Große Schauspielhaus that was built in Berlin-Mitte within the expressionistic art movement. Or well one of the first expressionistic houses that was built after WW1. You can tell bc of all the round and kinda flowery but still symmetric and not overtly maximalist deco that it's post jugendstil. It just has that 1920s vibe to it. The stalactit-like elements you can see in the big show-room are very much inspired by islamic muqarnas. Which wasn't a rare sight in this movement, since most things that were built were inspired by non-western architecture e.g. egyptian, islamic, indian, etc. Before it became a theater the Schauspielhaus was some sort of circus (ware)house hybrid. Sadly it got pretty much destroyed in WWII but was later rebuilt, and my mutuals may know it now as the Friedrichstadt-Palast.

The Architectural News
Following some design work I was taken by the similarity’s between The Wimbledon House and the BEWAG Haus, specifically with regard to the staircases.
The Architectural Drawings at All Souls College, Oxford:Wren and Hawksmoor
333 - AS IV.122. Survey plan, drawn by Hawksmoor to a scale of 10 ft to an inch (drawn scale). The draughtsmanship is datable to the early 1690s. Dark brown ink over pencil. 448 x 764 mm. Strasbourg lily WR; P. The central axis is dotted in ink. Pencil additions:
* (i) The screens passage is crossed out and a new wall drawn 9–6 ft from the central axis.
* (ii) A canopy is loosely sketched in one of the seventeenth-century rooms.
The cross vault over the chapel may also be an addition.
Note to 333:Wimbledon House was built for Sir Thomas Cecil, afterwards Earl of Exeter, c. 1588. It was subsequently purchased by Charles I and presented to Henrietta Maria, who employed Inigo Jones to undertake alterations in 1638–42. Jones was responsible for the T-shaped arrangement of rooms and corridors situated on the W side of the house. In 1673 (or thereabouts) the house was bought by Thomas Osborne, later 1st Duke of Leeds. The origins of 333 are not recorded. It should be noted, however, that in 1692 Sophia Osborne, a widowed daughter of the Duke of Leeds, married Lord Lempster, Hawksmoor’s patron at Easton Neston.

BEWAG-HAUS
Location Markgrafenstraße 35, D-10117 Berlin
Client Berliner Kraft und Licht BEWAG
Building period 1994–1997
Volume GFA 9.000 m²
The residential and commercial building for Bewag—in a prominent location on Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt—was built on the site where the city’s oldest power station once stood. The building’s design references the historic town house typology of the Friedrichstadt district. The defining feature is the relief-style stone facade with recessed steel-framed windows. The clearly visible facade screws add a technological touch, alluding to the industrial architecture that used to occupy this site. The building’s axial emphasis and the entrance situation it creates reference the Deutscher Dom (German Church) that faces it on the square.
