SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1 OF JURASSIC WORLD CHAOS THEORY

Some of my favorite shots from Season 1. The first one is just a single panel from @neunhofferart's dramatic Allosaurus flashbacks from the pilot and the last 2 are from deleted scenes (also from the pilot). Darius was angstier after Brooklynn's death, and there used to be a video of glasses Brooklynn talking to Darius (which was eventually changed to the Nublar 6 interview).

Scariest Creatures in Chaos Theory

The one-eyed Allosaurus? Nope.

The pack of well-coordinated raptors? Not them either.

The brand new (and surprisingly thicc) Becklespinax? Not that one.

The pale as fuck, unblinking, raptor whistling creep? YEP. This bitch right here is the scariest creature in Chaos Theory.

Her eyes will haunt my nightmares.

some favourite shots I did for episode 6... it was so fun crafting the final bridge scene from Travis' script, and seriously all the credit for the amazing opening seq goes to our EP Aaron for taking the emotion in Yaz's exposure therapy to the next level!

Inspo for this ep mainly came from the Alebrijes attack and car chase boards from the Coco blu-ray deleted scenes. Seriously yall, if you're an aspiring board artist, go watch those, they're all masterclasses in camera, framing, and acting.

Some thoughts below about these boards if yall are interested...

Becklespinaxes - there was a LOT of research that went into becklespinaxes (aka altispinaxes) to make this bridge scene happen. In the original script, there was the idea that Blondie (the yellow becklespinax) would be ramming and spinning the side of the van all over the bridge from the beginning, all while ben was still driving forward and Sammy was trying to climb the side latter of the van and into Yaz's window. - I think in writing it made for a really rad scene, but there were some concerns that the physics of all of that, as well as some staging issues, so I dove into becklespinax research to see if some of these problems could be fixed by grounding the conflict in the dino's hunting/attack styles - From what I can remember, as a mid-sized theropod, the becklespinax would've hunted small sauropods and the like, not van-sized dinos, so having her ramming the side of the van was out. Instead, I theorized the becklespinax would more likely be interested in rooting out the tastey treats inside, like a bird fishing out grubs from inside a tree or log. Thus, Blondie jamming her head into the window was born - From there on I tried to keep the van-and-dino physics and behaviours as grounded as possible, but i'll be the first to admit that physics was never my strong suit and sometimes the plot's just gotta come first over science

One detail I loved that unfortunately seemed to get passed over in animation was the way the second becklespinax, Brownie, entered the shot from behind the camera, and covered up the "NOW LEAVING DINOSAUR FREE ZONE" to just be "NOW DINOSAUR ZONE". Corny, I know! But it felt right and I was heartbroken to see that it wasn't caught in time to be able to go back and change it

Also no heart by sammy's name on yaz's phone :( idk why, sorry gang

About boards, an interesting thing to keep in mind was that even though this bridge may seem like a pretty isolated and simple set, there were actually several moments/shots that I didn't end up using because they revealed too much of the background, specifically the exterior island set and the exterior mainland sets that connected to the bridge! That's right, in the actual set models, those parts are just the cliff ledges and a bit on the sides, everything else would have to be what's called a paintover. That's something for aspiring storyboard artists to keep in mind about working on 3D TV shows: the sets come before storyboards in the pipeline, so often you have to make what you want to do work to the set, and not the other way around like in feature!

Becklespinax

(BECK-el-SPINE-ax)(Early Cretaceous?)

Gila Monster inspired color and patterns.

*Becklespinax is a wildcard to get information on. Its contemporary, Altispinax, was from the Early Cretaceous. It's also inferred by many of the sources I've gone through that Becklespinax is in fact just an Altispinax specimen, while other sources say it is its own creature.

This piece is part of a project that fell through, the "ABC of Dinosaurs", where I illustrated a selection of extinct animals, some famous, others less well known in fanciful depictions. I do not claim full realism, only giving my take on one of my greatest passions in life.

Not gonna lie, episode 6 was kinda distressing.

Just a dinosaur-free therapy island where the people traumatized by dinosaurs go to deal with the fact that there are now dinosaurs everywhere being invaded by a Becklespinax, a carnivorous dinosaur, which goes around eating all the people traumatized by dinosaurs in search of Yaz, a woman who has dinosaur-related PTSD.

Oh, and said dinosaurs, two Becklespinaxes, have been trained/mind controlled that they will hunt Yaz to the point of endangering themselves.

i still find it so funny that while Yaz/Sammy/Ben were in the transport truck and Yaz wanted to look outside, she climbed onto the Becklespinax instead of getting a leg up from the other two, despite there being plenty of room to do that lol

Alright, I am now absolutely obsessed with the Camp Cretaceous dinosaur human hybrid AUs. I’ve stared at @silverthelovebug’s beautiful art for a long time, and I binge read @snugglylime’s amazing fic! I tagged them both so you can check their content out, which you absolutely should.

But that got me thinking about my own hybrid AU. Since both of the above ones are set during Camp Cretaceous, I decided I wanted to create an AU for Chaos Theory! Spoilers below, obviously.

Basically, in this AU, the Six are still being hunted. But instead of it being an assassination attempt, the goal is to capture them to use as human test subjects. Specifically, turning them into dinosaur human hybrids. That’s the main idea, although I’m still working some things out. Below are the dinosaurs I think they would be:

Ben: Ankylosaurus

Brooklynn: Allosaurus

Darius: ???

Kenji: Atrociraptor

Sammy: ???

Yaz: Becklespinax

Okay so for Ben, he would obviously be an Ankylosaurus, specifically Bumpy (rip Bumpy). And Brooklynn would be an Allosaurus, for obvious reasons. Specifically the one that was sent to kill her (though in this AU, it wasn’t meant to kill her). For Darius…well, I don’t now yet. He and Sammy I still haven’t figured out. The problem is I’m trying to use dinosaurs just from Chaos Theory. And I can’t really think of any that would work for Darius and Sammy (but I want them both to be herbivores to make an even balance of carnivores and herbivores). So loving on to Kenji, he would be an Atrociraptor. The only one that doesn’t appear in Chaos Theory is Red, so sure, why not. He’s Red now. I chose this dinosaur for him because although they were all hunted by the raptors, Daniel was killed by them which I think gives Kenji the closest connection to them. Finally, Yaz. I decided to make her a Becklespinax, mainly because they attacked the dinosaur free zone where she was living. I think that makes sense.

Honestly, I might wait until Season 2 comes out to flesh out this AU more. By then we should have more dinosaurs, more info about the people hunting the Six, etc. And who knows, what dinosaurs they are might completely change when Season 2 comes out.

But once I have a solid idea of the AU, you better believe I’m writing a fanfic! Fucked up fanfic ideas my beloved <3

it really seems like they’re going to get all the campers involved, even if not this season.

the new dinos look great! becklespinax cool as hell and i already love the allosaurus. super excited for more silly little guys! (they are terrifying creatures that will kill you on sight)

ben looks a little stupid but i think it’s important to remember that he is a little stupid to it’s ok. darius is beautiful and can do no wrong

it really seems like they’re withholding so much information about this series. there’s only like 20 seconds of new stuff in this trailer. i truly think 90% of the stuff we’ve seen is all in the first episode.

i loove the darker tone. “someone is hunting us” ohhhh yeahh. i have some theories already but it might take me a bit to fully formulate them.

generally i’m feeling cautiously optimistic. some things are worrying me but some things are super exciting so i guess we’ll just have to wait. so glad we finally got this trailer i’m gonna go watch it five more times!
