i needed this today

i used to to work TWO jobs, 60+ hours a week, while living in my car. this was ~2009 ish, when gas was almost $4/gal. so I was walking 6mi round trip to my first job and ~4mi round trip to the second one, on top of doing inventory and cashiering and such. i had to 1) save money and 2) the car was... dangerous. not "unreliable," like. dangerous.

i was still eating maybe 500-800 calories a day.

(pro-tip: lots of gas stations have free coffee apps now, which wasn't a Thing back then, but I'd use my own cup so lots of places would charge for a "refill." Then I'd fill it with a little coffee and a lot of milk and sugar, both of which I hated, and if there was cinnamon I'd put that in, too. it's *some* calories and cost ~$1/day.)

i have never been SO HUNGRY as i am now

no, let me illustrate:

have you ever been SO hungry that you are beyond nausea, beyond the doubling-over pains, that you just feel cold and tired all the time and hunger no longer occurs to you?

that, but also SO hungry that I am ANGRY and on the verge of tears... ALL. THE. TIME. ALLLLLL the time.

doctors and the Celiac society and all these health sites tell me that the gluten cravings and constant hunger will go away in only a few weeks!!!1 of adhering to a gluten-free diet

it has been FOUR YEARS

FOUR OF THEM. with *mostly* GF adherence because I don't have hundreds of dollars more a month, and oh btw, many people with celiac only find out because they have other serious GI disorders (like me! hi!) so I literally can't do things like eat my favourite chickpeas, either. or most vegetables at all. i still try, they just make me very sick in *other* ways. like hives, or acid reflux that has now caused a hernia in my esophagus, stuff like that.

~supposedly~ the cravings are 1) replacing carbs and 2) deprivation of nutrients, since celiac causes the intestines to not uptake vitamins. the hunger is from the deficiency. I HAD those various panels tested. The most recent was in September. I'm *fine.* If anything, I get too MUCH magnesium and B-vitamins.

And then I freaking LOST. IT.

literally the only time I am not ravenously, breaking into tears any moment hungry... is when i have a regular freaking slice of pizza. a regular slice of bread. a regular freaking donut. that's IT. that is the ONLY time.

choose.

eat the autoimmune-safe gluten free food, but feel simultaneously so disgustingly full that if you lean over too far, you'll reflexively vomit... while ALSO feeling *even more hungry* than when you started...

or

eat a single slice of the gluten thing that will give you bad cramps and bloating like you're 6 months pregnant for at least a week, while your face breaks out into a rash, and you intermittently run fevers

okay, now in a few hours, choose again

in six hours, choose again

in the morning, choose again.

no, this has not caused me to develop any kind of eating disorder that doctors refuse to help with, except by telling me to just eat more, why do you ask?

it’s okay to do things that make your symptoms worse (as long as you’ll stay safe)

every once in a while you need to eat something yummy. or go on a walk. or a trip to the zoo. take a hot shower. cry your eyes out. dance. listen to music. draw for way to long. write. laugh. sit in a cafe with a friend. paint your nails. dye your hair. go on a run. pet a cat

sometimes you need to do things that are cathartic or make yourself feel alive. sometimes you need the reminder of why you’re fighting so hard to stay alive

this is your reminder that just because it makes your symptoms worse, it isn’t always the wrong thing to do. there can be value in these actions
