Stop Violence Against Women
20 posts
A photo-based project whereby men sport temporary ‪‎tattoos that say 'Stop Violence Against Women'. Not only is this a personal pledge to never commit, excuse or remain silent about ‪‎violence against women, but a step in letting everyone know that it is not tolerated. 10 men in 10 days until International Women's Day on March 8th.

Photo of Tommi (27/02/2017) “I’m from a country that has always been considered very progressive when it comes to gender equality. Finland elected the first female MP’s in the world in 1907 and according to Gender Gap Report, it was the 2nd best country to live for women in 2016. However, even with all the progressive policies and attitudes, 47% of the women in Finland have reported to have suffered from physical or sexual violence. It’s very concerning and sad, and it tells me, that even the most “progressive” countries have a long road ahead and massive changes are needed. As an aspiring teacher, I wish I can be a good role model for the next generation and educate them about the seriousness of domestic violence, and the fact that violence against anyone is always wrong. A real man is a hugger, not a hitter.”

Stop Violence Against Women 2017
In light of the devastating news that Russia is set to decriminalise domestic violence, I will be resume my Stop Violence Against Women Tattoo project which I started two years ago. I found these tattoos at the Women’s Room at my university while I was doing my Masters and had the idea of having men showing their solidarity in stopping this very serious and pandemic of a crime. It seems like domestic violence and women’s right in general has not progressed much over the last couple of years, demonstrating that there is still much to do. This is my small contribution, ten days leading up to International Women’s Day 2017 (March 8th): to continue to start a dialogue and also showcase the solidarity present in the (male) community.

In addition to tattoos, this year I am also having my men weave a star for an Australian-based project that "that brings people together around the world to say "No" to all forms of violence". Read more at: http://www.onemillionstars.net/

"Violence is the leading cause of death, illness and disability for Australian women aged 15 to 44. It’s responsible for more illness and premature death than any other preventable cause, such as hypertension, obesity, or smoking." - The Conversation "Ending Violence is Good For Everyone" (statistic via the Australian Government's Department of Social Services website)

Lisa [playing with Malibu Stacy]: A hush falls over the general assembly as Stacy approaches the podium to deliver what will no doubt be a stirring and memorable address. [pulls Stacy's cord] Malibu Stacy: I wish they taught shopping in school! Lisa: [groans, pulls Stacy's cord again] Malibu Stacy: Let's bake some cookies for the boys! Lisa: Come on, Stacy. I've waited my whole life to hear you speak. Don't you have anything relevant to say? [pulls cord] Malibu Stacy: Don't ask me, I'm just a girl. [giggles] Bart: Right on! Say it, sister. Lisa: It's not funny, Bart. Millions of girls will grow up thinking that this is the right way to act....that they can never be more than vacuous ninnies whose only goal is to look pretty, land a rich husband, and spend all day on the phone with their equally vacuous friends talking about how damn terrific it is to look pretty and have a rich husband! Bart: Just what I was going to say.
