Fic writers, if you're writing in one language and your characters are using another you can just Say they're speaking that language unless you're A. communicating that the POV doesn't understand or B. providing translations afterwards. It's all well and good to use other languages in your writing but if you don't provide a way for the average reader to understand it you're just taking them out of your story by making them translate everything manually.

I just read what was supposed to be a very emotional chapter in a fic but couldn't focus on the emotional beats bc I couldn't understand what the characters were saying to each other and kept having to copy and paste translate the dialogue. There are other, clearer ways to communicate what you're going for.

Edit: to clarify my point, I'm specifically referring to dialogue in a language that is different from the rest of the work and there is no translation provided within the work itself. It's like reading an Untamed fic and the dialogue is in Chinese, a Skam fic and the dialogue is in Norwegian, or a Not Me fic and the dialogue is in Thai. You can make that choice but it should be with the deliberate knowledge that it will change the way ppl engage with your fic, it WILL change the flow if your average reader is having to stop and translate everything. You should know these things to make an informed choice when you're writing. You can do whatever you want, it's your fic it's not that serious and you write however you want. BUT you should make the choice deliberately with the knowledge of how it will affect your readers IF that is something you choose to care about.

i read your motorbike prompt fanfic, i think the plot is really nice and tbh i think transmasc reader is really good for that story !! speaking as a thai person myself, i think transmasc rep is scarce here but that might just be me ??? 😭

tho speaking of which, there was smth that bugged me about the story, which is the part where the mysterious biker called the reader "nangfa (นางฟ้า)" not sure if you used google translate or smth else but by most interpretations, nangfa is fairy/pixie/goddess. i mean, it's applicable to angel, too, but it's not like... the most "right" ig????? if that even makes sense 😭💀 cuz i feel that thai language doesnt really have a direct translation for "angel" bc our language is derived/mixed from/with sanskrit, old khmer, pali, etc., which are languages heavily associated with buddhist scriptures. this is relevant bc in buddhism theres not really any "angels" rather than gods and goddesses (note that some sects do interpret them as angels but in mainstream/legitimized thai buddhism (Theravada) in thai language, they are called gods and goddesses), which means that the concept of angels doesnt really exist, but the closest to abrahamic angels we have are gods and goddesses. another thing is that nangfa has a feminine connotation, bc "nang" means mrs, so nangfa is literally sky woman. it might be a bit dysphoric since the reader is transmasc. tho i dont know the male equivalent of nangfa, never heard of one either personally even tho i lived in thailand for all of my life. mostly theyre just straight up called เทพบุตร (male gods) or เทวดา. also pretty sure mostly facebook incels flirt with girls using nangfa so that was mostly what threw me off 😭 if theyre not facebook incels, theyre just overdramatic, desperate, or old as hell (like 50+ 💀)

if u wanna change it after reading this (which u dont have to), there are some good choices such as "whanjai (sweetheart)," "baby (preferred by most younger thai couples)," "ที่รัก (thi rak -> my love)" ofc phi/p and nong are also good choices. if you want the reader/krist/mystery biker guy to have chinese ancestry (most common ethnic group in thailand), you can also use เฮีย "hiea" (older male) tho if youre interested in the usage of this word i can expand on that in another ask

IF "OPAS PHANUWAT" IS THE READER'S WHOLE LAST NAME OR IF IT'S LIKE OPAS = FIRST NAME, PHANUWAT = LAST NAME 😭 flash banged, if i am reading this right as โอภาส = opas... cuz my dad's friend's name is that 😭 it's a really old name but it has a good meaning. also, again if this came from google translate, imo it should be fixed as "opad" bc opas is not the correct phonetic sound, tho it's up to you if you wanna change it or not cuz by "romanization" (not sure abt the proper term for this but i think this word gets the point across?) it is right, it's just not read as "opas"... this part, again, is js my personal preference because my name is constantly butchered bc the way it is written vs how it's pronounced is very different in both thai and english 😭 really dont wanna suffer again w this shi

im only listing songs they've posted themself bc i'll be honest they do a lot of comm songs & i've lost track of all of them & this would get just way too extensive if i did so

kyuuyaku hankagai - the definitive magu song to me its really got everything. its heavy its dramatic the weight of the scenario gets across in every part of the composition. the part at like 3:24 where the bell tolls & u can really feel that sense of time running out. how long and high the notes are just being the perfect representation of screaming out of stress and fear and panic. how the rute furute woa & nami no ne no motifs mix into it so so well. i could go on about this song forever not even exaggerating ive never loved a song more.

oumen mokushiroku - the atmosphere of this one is so pretty yet so intense. the slower very pretty sounds like ur in a cathedral vibe into undeniably more intense edm & the way the two are mixed flawlessly together i love it i love it i love it. the way it reflects her state of mind, the shock of realizing her times almost up at the beginning shown with nothing but the rain that gradually works its way into something heavier with all her pleas, the feeling of panic & desperation it gets across, everything building up until she finally lies to herself it'll be better for everyone & ending so quietly as theres nothing more to be done no way to change the outcome she has no choice but to accept its over for her. its so good both in and out of series context for real

kugutsu ashura - the thing that sells me on this is always the last lyric section theres just something so so emotional about it. and it feels like every motif in the series should be in there and yet no matter how hard i try to find it in either the vocals or just the instrumental they arent there. after the heavy whole rest of the song the part from the ugate iine sono rensa line is just so bright and decisive and has so so much in it it makes the whole song for me. also i have mad respect for making a whole song out of words that are so mildly different sounding from each other. and magu says theyre bad at words. whats all this then. amazing to me. 

kannagi - i swear this song is permanently stuck in my head the rhythm & the melody are just so easy to listen to. i'll be going about my day not listening to it & suddenly im tapping it out or singing it without thinking. the fact that not even the jpn fans were sure if it was a made of language or old time jpn. & i think the majority of it Was deciphered but theeres still some overlooked lines i dont have the time to figure out myself (old jpn into modern jpn into eng). but even then u can feel a sort of hopeful regret in all of it. that feeling of "i meant well but it still ended up like this". i adore this song i really do. 

yamete kudasai - I LOVE THIS SONG this character could be my best friend fr. following orders bc its what u think u should do only to realize too late ur not urself anymore and get mad & complain about it. i love her we're the same. also its just a really fun song rhythm wise. bu bu bubun bu bu bubun... i also adore when the train crossing bells are used in songs its like my favorite thing ever feels like home to me

kafu-eine - KAFEINE!!!!!!!! for a while before this i was thinking someone should make a kafu themed coffee song like kafu-ccino or something imagine how i felt when my favorite producer did it better than i could ever think of. also i have a spiritual attachment to this song bc yelling kafu with the whole rest of the club & magu themself was by far the best moment of my life

aru sekai shoushitsu - i have very strong opinions on this song everyone who says its too long are missing the point. yes its 11 minutes long. if u would pay attention for 2 minutes u would realize how intentional that is & that its SHOWING the very themes the song is describing. also even being 11 minutes long this is the easy song to listen to ive ever heard the rhythm of everything is just perfect it really doesnt feel like 11 minutes at worst it feels like a 4 minute song u dont remember putting on repeat. this song gives me a headache when i think too hard about bc its SO direct and to the point it leaves out context (thats what the other songs are for so its fine) that makes it impossible to understand on its own but u get the context from other songs & ur like oh damn it really meant that directly they really just told us that. flawless first song that continues to hold up with the rest of the series songs 10/10

marshall maximizer - can i be honest with u the piano chords in this song remind me of pokemon dppt's route 216 music (which i love). anyway i love this song i dont think its overrated at all i think its perfectly rated although i do think a lot of people dont really think about what its saying so much as its fun to listen to. we love sunk cost fallacy the song!!!!! tabete! sugu nete! ushi ni naru! okite! mata nete! hito de nashi?!!! u will always be famous to me. it has a sort of unaffected vibe compared to other series songs despite her very clearly being aware of whats happening & that interests me. also shout out to the mini novel in the middle just flat out telling us what happens when someones not a "person" anymore. although this character's indifference to it means it didnt really hit me until laboratory. 

red rose - idk compass at all but THIS SONG GOES SO HARDDD.  AKAKI HOLY RAAAAAAAAAIN!!!!!!! theres a feeling of strength in this song its like impossible for me to feel bad while listening to it. its just really good really solid. its also my friend who also a Huge magu fans favorite song so it get extra points. im in the process of making a rime cover of it btw if u didnt know. 

laboratory - ive never had a song tear me apart this badly before. its so heavy and direct it took me like a whole month or more to process it when i came out and even now if i start thinking about it too hard i feel a little sick to my stomach. its exactly what maximizer was describing but from the opposite perspective. she doesnt want to die. she would do anything to take a step back and have another chance. but she ignored all the warning signs & overlooked the details and now she's passed the point of no return and all she can do is watch it happen to herself. and the dubstep drops just add to the whole feeling of when ur panicking so hard everything feels like its spinning and unstable and theres nothing to hold onto. and this is also my favorite usage of rime ive ever heard shes SOOOOOO cute and smooth thank u magu for the food im begging u to use her again. 

rasshaina - its just a really fun halloween song. it think its really funny that they tried being scary & even wrote a mini novel in it about like copious amounts of blood filling a room and its STILL no where as terrifying as laboratory is. zero complaints on this song and the word play is really really fun. 

nadenna - super cute zirai song. i was so happy when this came out & i still love it. i dont have anything profound to say its just a fun song. 

antenna39 - THIS IS SUCH A FUN SONG IM SO HAPPY THEY GOT TO DO THE MAGIMIRA THEME THATS SUCH AN HONOR..... my vocaP doing such an influential song love that for them. i unfortunately missed the ticket window for magimira itself but it was super fun in the club & i like to listen to it on the train to events really gets me in a fun excited mood i love it a lot i get a little emotionally overwhelmed listening to it sometimes but like positive emotions so its fine. 

unplanned apoptosis - i have 2 opinions on this song and the first is i understand her entirely and shes so right to be Like That. the second is wow girl why are we acting like this it seems a bit over dramatic and nonsensical. shes such a brat she awful WHY are u so mean. but also shes got the whole world ending repeatedly & her closest friend(?) just died permanently possibly bc of her & she didn't even get a chance to say anything about it or to her so like yeah i get it she deserves a meltdown or too. but u just know shes also awful in general too look at how she talks come ON girl. i think about her constantly. the instrumental too just really embodies that panic and instability of a breakdown total whirlwind of a song i think its really well handled. the fact even some of the lyrics kind of switch tone from hiding/ignoring something to accidentally letting the truth through idk its a fascinating song. i get her im her #1 apologist. i would also trip her down the stairs given the first opportunity to do so. 

kanon - this song had me worried magu was going to do maximizer but different as their usual music but that didnt happen its fine like ah it was an intentional choice [saying this they tossed a large rock from behind their back] i always think im neutral on this one until i hear it and i absolutely lose my mind over it. daremo gisei ni nanka naranai sonna risou ni sugatteshimatta in particular drives me INSANE. like YEAH. YEAH that wouldve been nice wouldnt it. wouldnt it. i like how this girl also admits to lying like in a i just wanted them to listen to me way & now she regrets it deeply. its like a totally different regret from kannagi tho. very solid song. also like the little coded text in the bg implying(?stating?) the whole things their fault in the first place and now they cant fix what they started. 

saiken romanesque - i'll be honest i just like thinking about this as a ship song for the girlies. like yes both of the girlies Are this producer's ocs no this song is not actually about them even slightly. but im insane enough to make it work. one day i'll finish the coko (+kafu & rime) cover of this that i started like 2 years ago. 

shuuen touhikou - putting a series song this low feels wrong & my opinion of it HAS improved since realizing the rute furute woa motif is like. a thing. & is most of the instrumental in this song. sorry this is just the least impactful of the series songs to me. thats not saying much however i would defend this song with my life. the.  mikitte isso nigeteshimaetara has gotten me thru so much. sometimes u really do just have to say ashi wa mada & do things scared. if i put it on by choice im neutral about it if it comes on when im not expecting it i Lose My Mind i do love it a lot. 

realize - im still waiting for kohane solo vocals on this. im SOOOOOOOO happy magu got a comm song in proseka i was begging for shuuen touhikou or maximizer to get in for the longest time and then they said magu comm song for vbs and i was like YESSSS. its a really good fun song too. i want to ap master in proseka one day but my wrists have been too fucked to practice it 😔😔

perfection - i again have no familiarity with the source material here but the song is really solid. nice full sound with miku & the piano to give it a very pretty touch

tetoris - i dont know how this exploded i think kafu-eine is the better meme song BUT it is a really fun song. bouncy rhythm. te te te teto teto te te te tetoris!! very fun. theres actually a lot in it too if u care to look (i have not yet beyond what they explained themself). they said they were having a rough time & they only ended up finishing it bc of a friends tweet & it kinda shows its very much a depression song. thats a neutral statement not a complaint. 

uni - this ones cute. nice to have a rain theme magu song thats not a series song. just some cute gumiku. i started a kafu lapis cover of this and never got anywhere with it oops. it has a sort of sparkly feeling like sun bouncing off raindrops very fitting as expected of magu

retry - i actually DID read several chapters of the source material specifically bc of this song (it was not my thing) and its really neat to see magu doing time loops outside of aru sekai series . its such a similar theme but done so entirely differently & its really fun to see them handle it as such. going from series songs where the world is dying & everyone's right to exist as a person is on the line at the same time to this where its just a boy getting in situations & making it his problem to solve is like. refreshing in a way. 

fabric flower - this one as well idk the source material but the stories really clear from this song. this feels like an experimental type of song for them its so much lighter than just about everything else theyve done before or since. were it not for the magu signature piano & chord progression i would not recognize this as a magu song if i didnt already know. i actually do like how the story in it is told i think its a really good solid song but given the choice i usually listen to their other songs instead. 

im not including comm songs they havent posted themself but honorable mention to viper they wrote for kankan. AMAZING song its my fave comm song of theirs i think it'd be like 7.5 on this list i think. mugen kyoukaisou for araki also ranks high as does dimension for isekaijoucho.

also idk if anyones ever wondered about why i use "asian" and "white" as oppositional despite literally being "both", its bc i view poc and white as antithetical to each other. you cant be a white poc, youre either one or the other bc they definitionally cancel each other out.

everybody knows race is made up, but being white is like THE most made up part of that idea, whiteness is like a collection of acceptable qualities its phenotype, its religion, its a specific set of first languages (european ones)

and theres like some nuance on the line, its not clear cut. i dont identify as white, despite something like 75% of my heritage being european, because ive never been treated as white. this is why we have the concept of white passing right it means "i identify with my actual non european heritage but i dont experience racism" and its up to any mixed with white person if they want to identify as white or not, just bc i dont doesnt mean what i do is correct for everybody whether theyre white passing or not. but thats the root of why i personally act like theyre oppositional.

- mass candle lighting and dancing all night. mariachi band all night

- face-painting and henna are common stalls, along with a giant poster for finger-painting

Remembrance Week - july 21-27th (HHAHSKDNS TODAY???? I DIDN’T REALIZE)

- a week of festivities decided to mourning the losses of loved ones from in the walls. again— lots of happy festival stuff, not sad.

so in the last month ive been on holiday and then got sucked into inazuma eleven, since i was alresdy playing it ill give a short summary of what i thought (plus inaxuma eleven 2) and also the anime!!! (though shorter bc i watched it in a dub of a language i barely know) ill try and play all the inazuma eleven 3 games, i only watched the first season of inazuma eleven go tho.

inazuma eleven 1: it was great!!!! unfortunately ive been endeared to bobby shearers. also i thought the erik plotline went nowhere but i was supposed to get him before kirkwood.... the last battle i beat by mere happenstance, whoops!!! i lovedit tho. ALSO someone pls answer this: are zeus like.... genetically modified humans????? cuz it neverr gets answered, ray darks way of speaking was SO VAGUE. like is the research abt the boys or the steroids????

also nellys so cool i love her. the anime was super cool, but i was confused with its 127 eps since i only played the first game so i thought it mightve been like some anime only stuff??? turns out theres more than one inazuma eleven game.

i'm not really into making new years resolutions, mostly bc i know the way that i am and that my attention span flutters around and i tend to cycle through interests in phases that come and go at random, but i do think it would be nice to give instrument practice a try again since i have SEVERAL and only really learned the basics on some. plus my partner has others ive never learned. it would be nice if i would actually take time to learn something to the point i could do something with it lol.

instruments, and also languages again. but specifically refining what i know of spanish. a few years ago, i'd hit the point where i wasnt quite bilingual, but i was somewhat close to that mark. i could practice talking to my dad [spanish is his first language] on the phone and hold decent conversations, and i'd gone with a few of my classmates in high school one summer on a sort of exchanged program we had with a school in spain for a few weeks, and i could fumble my way through conversations with my host family parents who didn't really speak english. [it was a bilingual school so the students def knew english better than we knew spanish lol but i still learned a bit and it was really fun]

but u know what they say... use it or lose it... i've gotten rusty for sure 😔 i took spanish in middle/high school for like five years? up to ap spanish senior year, which our teacher said youre essentially fluent by then, plus in elementary school we always had basic spanish classes. i was going to try and minor in spanish in college, but i was kind of overloading myself that first year and was also STRUGGLING to keep up with the reading for spanish class. i already am a slow reader just in general [i would also struggle to keep up with reading assignments in english classes so it was extra hard in a language i was still trying to grasp] so i ended up dropping the minor pretty quickly after i'd had i think the semester requirement. i was bummed, but i needed to keep my head afloat with what i could handle.

but then i really wasnt using it as much. my dad's pretty much the only person in my life that's a spanish speaker - he and his whole family are bilingual, but i'm not very close to his side of the family and theyre spread out all over the place anyway. my dad and i also have a complicated realtionship sometimes lol but also over time we stopped speaking in spanish as much. fairly recently when he called me he started speaking in spanish, and i was like, in the middle of something when he called me and not really in the mood to talk anyway, plus i just couldnt hear him well on the phone lol so i was like ??? and he just kinda laughed and was like ohhh youve lost it, you dont remember 😌 and ive been in kind of an internal crisis since then lol

my parter also said the other night there was a family outside that asked him for directions but they only spoke spanish so he kinda had to fumble his way through it, and he was like "you probably woudlve done better" cause while we both learned some degree of spanish and have a mixed latino family background, i learned and used it a bit more for a time. but tbh i dont think i wouldve been able to help!!! bc ive forgotten a lot!!! it's one of those things where like i think i could probably recall a lot once i had it refreshed, but pulling from memory is like... dial tone.... and also the social anxiety is a major thing. like i always really wanted to reach the bilingual state because i do like that part of my culture, and i know a lot of my family on my dad's side grew up bilingual but i didnt really because blah blah parents divorced whatever it's complicated lol. but i wanted to keep that connection to the family culture and also just because i think it's good for people to learn multiple languages [i know other countries seem to be better at this at a base level, but here in the US it's not as much of a standard]

but i'm really bad at like, all the things you need to learn a language, even in my native english state. i'm slow at reading. i get distracted. i dont have great listening comprehension if i cant hear you perfectly clearly or there are overlapping sounds. i have social anxiety and often avoid talking to people.

you gotta read to learn. you gotta hear words to learn. you gotta have conversations to practice. ive met bilingual people whose native language is spanish and theyd always be nice and be like "oh you can always practice with me sometime!" and id be like ahahhahfhsd i will die if i do that. because im scared at being bad or really embarrassed at how much ive forgotten. so like i had chances and wouldnt use it lol. my own fault for not being proactive =_=

a few weeks ago i did once again try that method of like, playing video game in target language. i switched my animal crossing new leaf game to spanish and made a new character. that was fun, tho it also was a lot of reading and a mix of me trying to get the gist of what they were saying and having to pause and look up words if there were too many i didnt know. i think i had that same issue when i did it a while back with city folk lol it was just kinda overwhelming for me at the time and messed with the FLOW. but i think i also tried that back in high school so i think i could do a lil better now, but still.... slow.

i also was doing duolingo again for a while, but i'd heard they started using AI in their lessons and i really didnt want that to potentially have me learning things wrong without realizing based on the things i heard people saying about shit they were finding in their lessons. but ive never tried any of the other language learning app or whatever tho so i kinda just came to a halt after that. which sucks!!! because it was at least keeping me lightly practicing!!! i was learning a lil portuguese that way too for capoeira since we were doing songs and it helped that i knew spanish, but for now i think i'd be nice to just focus on one lol.

Orion:

Orion is a cautious sort of person, he’s grown up in a harsh environment and he works a moderately dangerous job and it kinda bleeds over to his nomming tendencies. He’s the type of pred that will always check in on whoever he’s going to gulp down, triple checking if they seriously want to do this, being exceedingly gentle during the whole process to make sure they don’t get hurt.

His stomach is pretty soft on the inside, despite his outside being hard cold metal. It’s not really a stomach but more of a place to store extra parts or items of value. Usually, items are put inside through the sliding panels on his chest and it’s pretty secure. But he can also access it through his pharynx tube through his mouth.

He usually noms people through there because he’s worried that nomming them through his sliding panels might be more dangerous. His insides are pretty heated, since he needs the temperature to keep some of his functions running and it’s completely dry inside. It’d be a problem if any liquid were to get inside his storage hatch since it could potentially get into any other delicate inner workings of his.

he’s pretty aloof most of the time, but he’s fascinated by humans as a whole, since their species and their planet are so vastly different from his own. He doesn’t have a lot of info on them though since everything about humans is locked up tight by space government laws, but now that he has a living specimen to observe he’s been pretty curious about them. When he was younger he always dreamed of being a scientist to help better lives or some sort of job that specializes in humanitarian (but like, the robot version of humanitarian) sort of aspects. Obviously he didn’t get to fulfill that dream seeing how he’s working as a smuggler. he also likes to nom people through his mouth bc he feels like he can get a better feel for them or to just make sure they make the trip down safely. He doesn’t do it often despite the fact that it feels nice for him, but if anyone asks, he’ll oblige willingly.

Jane:

she’s thinks its a weird alien custom. It makes sense that Orion’s biology is way different from anything on Earth, but dear lord, it still freaks her out a bit. She puts some trust in Orion (grudgingly) since he’s the only ally she currently has on her side. Also he’s figured out that she’s not some animal and has been attempting to communicate with her with mixed results. It had been rough in the beginning but at least they’re making some progress.

Jane doesn’t trust him entirely though, and she’s fully ready to ditch him as soon as she thinks he’ll turn on her and give her up for some soulless cash. Sure, they’ve managed to have some very basic and stunted conversations with the limited vocabulary theyre working with, but she has one goal and that’s to get back home.

while she wants to be able to let her walls down around someone, anyone really, she just can’t bring herself to be truly vulnerable. For her, it’s easier to just not care anymore so it hurts less when they either turn on her, leave her, or just decide to kill her.

secretly, she likes being nommed because it reminds her of a hug. Being surrounded by hostile aliens who could crush her underfoot doesn’t leave her with many opportunities to get a hug from someone. She’s awfully homesick and just wants to get back to earth. Although she’s mostly alone and drifting through the foster system, she craves being able to simply connect with another person without hand symbols and confusing language exchanges.

She’s found that Orion seemingly doesn’t mind tucking her away in his storage either so occasionally when her homesickness gets to be too much, she’ll ask him to nom her. however, she considers that as her “breaking” or giving up on her vow to stay distant and usually after becomes warier to Orion, frustrated at herself for giving in to the temptation of comfort and the promise of safety.

While Orion doesn’t really understand why Jane always withdraws from him after he thinks they’ve made some emotional connections, he still tries to help or nudge her back into her usual habits. He doesn’t like to admit it but he’s grown attached and worries about her feelings and safety.
