hey anon!

since i was tagged i'm just gonna share my own experience as someone who's first language is not in fact english (i'm a native german speaker). but before i do, just a quick heads up it's almost 3am over here and so this might not be all that coherent... (and also, this will be long)

anyway, anon, i feel your struggle. i feel your struggle very much

(putting the rest of my stories, explanations, and tips under a read more to avoid clogging people's dashes)

part 1 - my personal, very specific struggle

for me, that struggle is very specific, however. you see, i recently finished drama school. and since i'm austrian, i went to a drama school right here in austria where all my classes were in german which means all my classes were in german. and you know what, there's actually a whoooole lot i could say about bl when it comes to acting! but i don't. why? because i just don't have to words for it, not in english

for example, in bad buddy episode 4 there is this moment where ink fixes pat's hair and i absolutely ADORE that moment for acting reasons but i can't really share it on here because how do i talk about spielrichtungen in english? there's also this thing people are saying about ohm, which is that he's got chemistry with everyone, and i could actually tell you exactly why that is and what he's really good at EXCEPT no i can't, because how do i say "anspielen" in english?

with some terms my teacher mentioned i do know how to get the point across in english, for example the word "vordenken": i can just translate that as "to think ahead" and it will make sense in english, but then there are other things like a sentence such as "er zergeht diesen satz" which seems a little impossible

and there are so many terms and concepts that i want to talk about, but i can't, because i don't know how to say "aktionen setzen" in english. or how to talk about "brüche", "fallhöhen" or "gedanken/bilder setzen" in english. i probably could talk about "senden" in english, but i don't know if the word "to send" makes sense in that context to an english speaker. and there's so much more...

so how do i deal with this problem? unfortunately the answer is: i just don't talk about these things on here

however, i'm lucky! because my mom also went to drama school and my mom also knows how to talk about acting in german and my mom also watches asian drama and actually watches bl with me. so my solution to this is... instead of talking about these things on here in english i just talk about them in german with one specific person!

so i guess one advice i can give you is... if you feel overwhelmed sharing your thoughts in english, try to find at least one bl-loving friend who speaks your native language where you can let all your thoughts out. even if it's frustrating not being able to share your thoughts with the entire fandom, having at least one person as an outlet really does help in my experience

part 2 - general fangirling(gn) in english

ok so i've just talked about my very specific struggle with very specific technical terms. so how about talking about your favorite show in a more general sense?

alright, so if you go onto my blog you'll see that i ramble a LOT. especially in the tags. i've even written one or the other meta post (not many -- you can still count them on one single hand lol)

but you see, i wasn't good at that in the beginning either! what's the big secret? practice makes perfect! you gotta start at some point, only then you can get better

for example, when i was 16 i definitely couldn't talk about my own thoughts and feelings about tv shows very well, especially not in english. but i spent my entire late teen years reading tons and tons of spn/destiel meta on here. and then i slowly started sharing my own thoughts more and more, using the words and phrases i'd been seeing for years

just reading isn't enough. you'll build up a big passive vocabulary that way, which is a fantastic start! but if you really want to be able to share your own thoughts you actually have to turn that passive vocabulary into active vocabulary. and you do that by actively using the words and phrases

and it's difficult, it really is (personally i think turning passive vocabulary into active vocabulary is one of the hardest things about language learning). but the more you actively share your thoughts, the more you practice, the better you'll get!! i'm 25 now and i can spend ages rambling on a topic (case in point, just look at this post oops), but it was a long and difficult road. but i did it, because i kept trying

the main point that i'm trying to make here is: you have to turn sharing your thoughts into a habit, because the more you do it the more it will become second nature and you'll start doing it automatically. (as a teenager i was very bad at pointing out what i liked or disliked about a media. i actively had to train myself to do it. and it's the same thing when it comes to sharing you thoughts in english - practice practice practice, that's the important thing)

part 3 - more tips

however, i get that it's intimidating to just put your thoughts out there from one day to the other...

→ so my tip is: start small!

but how? here are some ideas:

share your thoughts in the tags

if you see a gifset, in the tags just say what you think about it, what you think about that moment/scene/parallel/etc. if it's too overwhelming then just write a single sentence! if you don't know how to share details then just share your thoughts in a more general way! it doesn't really matter, as long as you share something (and you'll see, over the years that something will turn into more and more

2. find a friend - create a save space

another thing you can do is, find a friend (or more) that you trust! talk to them in private, share your thoughts with them in private. it's a save space and you get to practice expressing your thoughts in english without a big audience watching you. i've made the experience that having at least one trusted person takes away some of the anxiety of being judged

→ another tip that i have is: don't give a fuck

if you're worried about not making sense, make a point of just not caring about it! remember, this is tumblr. no one is writing any actual papers or reviews to be published anywhere

many people just type out their thoughts as they're spilling out of their heads. a big chunk of thoughts on here are written as people are half delerious either from an emotional high after an intense episode or because they're writing down their thoughts at an ungodly hour (hi. it's 3:30 am now). do you think these people worry about being coherent? no, they don't. they just want to get their thoughts out somehow. in what way literally doesn't matter, as long as they're out. i can promise you, a whole chunk of posts definitely aren't even proof-read (this one for sure isn't haha)

also, a big number of people are english 2nd language speakers themselves! we get it. we know how difficult it is to share your thoughts in a foreign language. i promise you, most people won't judge you for your mistakes, in fact, most people will be delighted that they get to read what you have to say at all (and if anyone is being and asshole about this, then they're the problem, not you)

also,another very important thought: don't write for other people, write for yourself!! that's how i do it with most of my posts as well... i'm my own main target audience because i can't predict if anyone's even going to read my thoughts or care about them. so who the fuck cares if they're making sense if they're making sense to me? that's really what matters at the end of the day

→ lastly: share as much as you are able to

i've already mentioned this earlier, but actually i think this is important so i want to put it as it's own thing. as i've said, if you don't know how to say something in detail then for the time being just share as much as you can! the details will come with practice and experience

another thing you can do is to try and find other words. try to describe the concept. for example, i don't know how to say "er zergeht den satz" in english, but i can say "he ruins the effect of the line by saying it while walking in that exact moment". i may not know how to effectively translate the word "zergehen" in english but i can describe what i mean by it in many words

the dictionary is also your friend, and you can also look at other people's posts and check what words and phrases other people use to bring certain points across (seing how other people write/talk about a specific topic is actually a real thing professional translators/interpreters do and is referred to as "looking for parallel texts". which is something i should do for acting terms. i should read up on acting in english so i can finally learn the terms, but i've just been lazy so far hahaha)

i think i was indeed asking for advice so thank you for getting it despite my confusing way of asking! i believe i'm in a situation where i want to share my thoughts but 1. i can't seem to put them in order or make them make sense 2. english is not my first language and even though i can understand it and i usually use it online rather easily i struggle with translating the more analytical thoughts from my head to english, if that makes any sense. sometimes i get very overwhelmed too because of all the shows i'm watching (i'm really gonna have to put some of them on hold), not even commenting, just watching, so i can only imagine how overwhelmed i'll be if i decided to actually post about them

the thing you said about choosing one or two shows to talk about is pretty interesting and i think it is a good idea, i'll probably do that in the future if i can even choose the ones i wanna dissect publicly

tbh i have to think about if i really wanna do it because like i say i'm pretty happy just reading all your thoughts, so well put, and reblogging some pretty gifsets. it's just that sometimes i feel like there's so much in my head -too much- and i need to write it down or it'll explode, the thoughts pile up and it gets busy, am i making any sense?

I would say to your first point, tumblr is probably one of the safest places to let go of the need to make sense. people ramble inchoherently on here all the time. and you can always edit things later, or delete them later, and make them unrebloggable so they don't escape your control. so, no pressure to try, but if you did want to, this is pretty good place to experiment with it.

As to the second point, I am mono-lingual so I have no direct experience with it myself, but I know there are many people on here writing about BL in English as a second/third/etc language. Perhaps one of them will see this and chime in with any thoughts?

Mine are mostly an echo of the first point - this is not a place where you need to make perfect sense. And, although English dominates BL tumblr (at least from what I have seen from my English speaking corner), you can always choose to write in your first language, just to get the thoughts out of your head and out there. there may even be other speakers of it who are interested in reading your thoughts on BL. I have google translated posts in other languages before, I'm sure other people have as well.

And of course, reading and reblogging gifsets is always a wonderful use of tumblr.

But yes, there is something about writing it all down that clears up space, like releasing a pressure valve. So I can certainly see the appeal.

Chiastic Structure of S2

The post preceding this is Chiastic Structure of S1.

S1 was neat, tidy and simple compared to S2.

S2 was...difficult. I have a feeling this is because of the missing minisodes. There felt like there were "holes" in places, where there was a strong scene with no corresponding pair, and yet in others there were single lines matching up.

You will also notice its quite...skewed? The hinging midpoint is right at the end of Ep4, which means the last two episodes mirror the preceding the four! So there are gaps. For example, the conversation in the pub in Ep2 doesn't match with anything specific.

One of the things I hoped it might shed some light on was the purpose of the trip to Edinburgh, which seems like a bit of a dead end. It does, in a way - I will discuss it a bit further below, along with some other parallels that didn't fit the structure.

Discussion on parallels that didn't fit the structure:

1. Crowley is given permission to destroy all of Job's possessions /  Gabriel refuses to give permission to destroy the Earth aka Armageddon II

There is a repeat emphasis on licenses, permits and authority throughout S2, so I really thought Crowley's permit to destroy of Job's possessions would have a match. It did, but it didn't fit the structure! If you look closely some of the other permits and authority lines do slot in. I'm planning some metas on these topics in the near future, as the use of language around these concepts is quite interesting, and there is some history to throw into the mix as well.

2. Crowley deceives the archangels with the help of an angel

This pair is a reference to Crowley and Aziraphale teaming up in the Job minisode to restore Job's children, and then Muriel aiding Crowley to sneak into Heaven. I'd just like to point out that Crowley could have gone to Heaven on his own - remember Eric went up with the hellfire in S1E6 - but he doesn't know where to go and get Gabriel's file, that is what he needs Muriel for.

3.  Popping up to Edinburgh

Ah, the trip to Edinburgh! Why? WHY!!! Why go all that way for ... nothing?

Guess what - it's a parallel sequence to Crowley popping up to Heaven.

I was going to write a companion piece to this but...my to do list is getting a bit long at the moment. Let me know if you want me to expand on it.

4. Ignoring messages

So this one started as "Nina gets txt messages from Lindsay, Mrs Sandwich says not to look at them," at the start of Ep3, then during the Ball Crowley is trying to lead the humans out of the bookshop and Shax confronts him with another bundle of mail. Crowley is succeeding in ignoring his messages from Hell, but Nina isn't.

5. Muriel and The Interrupted Tea Ceremony

In S2 it noticeable that everyone except Crowley needs permission to enter the bookshop, whereas in S1 they could just walk in. Originally I made a comment elsewhere that I thought this part matched with a sub-story to the Ball, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and hospitality to angels, but then I came back and had another look and saw that there was a surface match - but I'm still going to do another post about the "cupperty" because it keeps getting lost in all the noise!

6. Threats and Declarations of War

Shax makes a number of threats throughout the series, to hunt Crowley down and to declare war on Aziraphale. So when Aziraphale inadvertently declares war on Hell with the halo toss, you'd think there would be a matching pair. There is, but not with a declaration of war, just a threat to Crowley. This is probably one of the weaker pairs.

7. Mysteriosity, audacity, ferocity and dangerocity

The Marvelous Mr Fell and his Mysteriosity has a pair with Shax's speech to her fellow demons about the unprecedented audacity of the attack on the bookshop, and how their lack of numbers will be made up for with their ferocity and...dangerocity. It should have fit, but it didn't.

OS2xBBS: My Overall Thoughts

This is severely overdue, but I wanted to distance myself from these episodes to make sure that 1) regency bias didn’t seep through and 2) my thoughts don’t get clouded by the cute, swoony moments (all the kissing!) in an attempt to mask deeper plot and characterization issues, and 3) with some difficulty, I try to set aside how desperately I wanted OhmNanon’s reunion with PatPran to live up to the OG series.

So, to address the last item, for the most part OhmNanon’s chemistry was still alive and well, save for a few hiccups. This is a testament to two very experienced professionals. That said, my biggest gripe with these special episodes was the treatment of the Pat and Pran characters that has nothing to do with the actors.

It didn’t feel like a true crossover of two beloved series but instead felt like Pat and Pran’s presence were more like afterthoughts thrown into an ATOTS script. Pat and Pran were merely there to serve Phupha and Tian’s story and that is were I take great issue. In this case, Ohm and Nanon should not have been billed as main leads but rather supporting characters that have extended guest arcs in an ATOTS sequel.

Maybe setting plays a larger role here. I’ve asked myself if I would feel this way if Phupha and Tian got thrown into Pat and Pran’s university life instead. But I can’t imagine a storyline where the inverse of what we got makes sense since PatPran are the more established couple and PhuTian have no reason to leave PPD.

My wish was that instead of a crossover, P’Aof would have let BBS stand on its own even if it meant we got two fewer episodes out of it. While we did get glimpses of Pat and Pran’s life three-years into their relationship, it felt watered down because they weren’t in their own environment but a borrowed one. So, really, more like seeing them while on vacation than anything truly concrete. A lot of ‘what have Pat and Pran been up to and where are they in their relationship’ was left to viewer interpretation, which is all fine and well if what P’Aof had to say about the state of their relationship made any sense.

Fake fighting and cute hijinks aside (Ohm and Nanon can sell these type of scenes in their sleep); what I’m after is the meatier stuff like the end of EP4, the entirety of EP5, EP10, EP11 and EP12. Where is the Pran that got choked up when Pat revealed he ran after him with his guitar; who gripped his hand when Pat volunteered to fake break up to win back Pran’s friends and wordlessly said I’m here to stay. Where is the “but I care about you more” Pran? 

And where is the Pat who communicated so openly with his man? Who served as a walking advertisement of what it means to be a soaring green flag to all those who came before and after him? Why was he reduced to an amalgamation of Harry and Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber? Make it make sense, P’Aof. Pat never, ever, not once, came off as a dumb himbo in the OG series, so why was he reduced to that here?

The script could have been so much better, tighter, just more substantial. And we can't even say that P'Aof didn't have the space to include a meaningful story for them; I call bullshit on this notion. There's so much story that you can tell in a single hour. We've seen him do it with the BBS pilot.

It felt like so very little thought went into the BBS side of the story. Does P’Aof not know how to write established relationships in a compelling way? I know this can't be true because he gave us EP12, but why did it feel like he phoned it in with these bonus episodes? It’s like P’Aof knew he had both boys for a limited time and just threw the entire kitchen sink at them and anything that stuck made it into the final cut. Like, he relied heavily on the actors to bring it home for him. And that really wasn't fair to Ohm or Nanon who really did the best they could with what they were given.

I mean, even if he wanted to show the (realistic) cracks in their relationship, there were so many better ways to show this than have Pran essentially running away, avoiding Pat (basically regressing to who he was pre-relationship) and then treating Pat like a bumbling Barney Fife for following him? There was no fire in either of them to fight for or with one another. They were shown to have grown complacent (and dare I say taking each other for granted?) which is so at odds with what we got in the OG series that I was confused at what I was watching onscreen. It did not feel like a continuation of EP11 leading to EP12, in fact it felt very disconnected from their origin story.

Pat Jindapat. What they did to my guy was a travesty. They took away all his depth and cast him in the role of a bumbling idiot. Don't get me wrong, OG Pat had his comedic moments but I felt like OS2 veered so far into the extreme of 'lets bring the funny' that it fell completely flat. It was NOT funny. It was disappointing and sad to see one of my favorite characters reduced to this cartoon version.

More than senselessly reducing Pat to cannon fodder to merely serve as comic relief, I'm upset that Pran's growth from the series was essentially negated to where he became, in some ways, unrecognizable. More than once, it felt like Pran was just tolerating Pat's presence rather than basking or gravitating towards it. Again, so inconsistent for a guy who longed for his man for literal YEARS.

Gone are the days of "I'm done adapting" or adoringly staring at the space Pat used to occupy with heart eyes. I just don't get how we went from that Pran to this Pran to the Pran who readily committed his life to Pat in EP12. This in-between Pran is a stranger to me.

Final words: I'm both grateful that we got extra scenes with our boys but at the same time wish P'Aof had left them untainted.

when did you watch bad buddy/join the fandom?

I watched it from the start, but somewhere around episode 3 I started actively looking into the fandom and by the end of ep4 I was already in a discord group and writing my first fanfiction. The rest, as they say, is history XD

I am a PatPran, InkPa enthusiast although I did also like the LouisSafe idea which is why i wrote a whole fic about them haha

Beyond Pat and Pran, Pa, Korn and Ink will always be in my heart

As much as I love episode 5, episode 3 is probably the episode I’ve watched the most haha I just love watching Pran coming out of his shell (even if he does get crushed in the very next episode T-T)

favourite scene(s)

The Rooftop comes in at number 1 every time, but also the fight in front of the apartment block just before it, the bus stop scene and guitar scene in ep3, the balcony scene in ep8, the bedroom scene in ep9, so many scenes in ep11, and everything after Pran turns up at the apartment in ep12. Serotonin factories every one. 

one thing you would change about the show if you could

I’d have liked Pat’s anger in episode 7 to have been dealt with a bit more definitely but they pulled it back by giving it proper consideration in episode 11.  Honestly I would have also loved more flashbacks to their pre-transfer era as well as a little more on Icy Pat, but I understand why we didn’t get them.

This is a difficult one for me! So I actually did a list of my favourite bad buddy edits here and also fanfics here and here plus I’m pretty sure I did another, but can I find them? No. So I’m gonna add to this by saying also anything by @miscellar (aworkingprinter on AO3).

Some of my own favourites? Well, that’s trickier haha! Probably A Fine Line Between Hormones and Home, The Space Pirate and the Officer of the Law and, just because it was my first fanfic in the fandom, He’s No Romeo.

Pancakes for Dinner by Lizzy McAlpine always makes me think of pining Pran, Heather by Conan Gray also gives huge Pran in episode 4/5 vibes. Alas I can’t think of one that screams Pat though I know I have thought that about songs before. No doubt I’ll be listening to a playlist tomorrow and be like “oh yeah, this one!”

i wrote "jim becomes lucius" in the sense of turning into the New Relationship Advisor-- i imagined them talking to ed about stede or whatever, NOT them telling izzy he's in an unhealthy relationship 0_o
