BATFAMILY MERMAID AU BC I LOVE MERMAIDS AND IVE BEEN SITTING ON THIS ONE FOR FOREVER (its still a wip)

The tank was huge. It was 347 feet long, 259 feet wide, and 45 feet deep. It's one of the largest aquarium tanks in the world and it's one of Bruce’s greatest achievements.

The tank has several passageways leading to smaller tanks private caves, and a handful of alcoves.

Rays, smaller sharks, groupers, eels, and almost 70 species of fish fill the vibrant tank. But as pretty as the fish are, they aren't the main attraction in this particular tank.

No, that belongs to Bruce’s other greatest achievement. His mers.

He has one of the largest medical rehabilitation centers in the world. The outside is treated like a normal aquarium, with people coming from all over to see the beautiful creatures, but behind the scenes are people going out of their way to rescue and research the mers.

Bruce picked it up from his father. It was a silly dream that the man had had before his parent's murder. Bruce has dedicated his entire life to bringing that dream to life.

He has helped many, hundreds, even, of mermaids and mermen through his facility. Each mer is helped back into ocean life, save for the ones that are too injured or sickly to go back, though, even those mers are free to leave should they choose. Some mers will come back frequently just to say hi are get free check up when they are ill or pregnant or want to show off there progress as thanks.

There are a few smaller tanks that are meant for things like pod training mers who have been alone since pups and don’t know how to handle society, or feral mers that are being retrained to not be violent. There are habitat based tanks as well, made for mers that live in extreme climates, such as selkies that are used to freezing waters or more sensitive tropical fish that can’t acclimate to anything other than their usual warmer waters.

Of all of the mers though, there are a handful that stay for far different reason than that of the sickly or disabled.

It’s a running joke in the community that Bruce is keeping his own orphanage. But if you ask him, he will tell you flat out that the mers are his family or his pod.

He found Dick early on in his endeavors. The mer is a beautiful Betta. An omega orphaned when his pod was tragically killed in a different aquarium. Bruce took him in immediately. Dick ended up being a very clingy pup, and seemed to see Bruce as a form of parent. The betta was flashy, always one to perform and show off his beautiful bluish greenish fins to any curious humans that passed him by.

Bruce stumbled upon Jason on accident. He’s been out at sea one day, enjoying a relaxing summer day in his newest boat when his fishing pole, and all of his bait suddenly disappeared without a trace. A few minutes of frantic looking later, a small, wriggling body floated up to the surface. A merpup had somehow managed to steal all his bait and his pole when he wasn’t looking, but it seemed the poor pup had gotten himself tangled in the fishing line.

Jason is an outcast. His parents were from differing species, making Jason a ‘mutt’. He was shunned by both his species, and his mother was shunned for breeding with a species outside of her own. So of course Bruce took him in. Jason is half grey reef shark and half snapper, leaving him with a red, shiny shark tail. The alpha is every bit territorial as his species would lead him to be, but he’s calmed down a ton since his vicious teen days.

Tim was harder to get than any of Bruce’s other mers. The omega mer was bred in captivity and was quickly taken from his mother almost as soon as he was born. The Drakes were known for their interests in amazing things. They had many statues, precious gems, antique armors and books and anything else they either find on their digs or buy on the black market. One day they decided to add a rare mer to their collection: a crossbreed between a cuttlefish mer and a betta mer. Tim’s tail resembles Dick’s in shape, but his is naturally a red and black ombré, with short and soft fins that decorate his body. It changes colors often though, thanks to his cuttlefish father.

As beautiful and amazing as Tim is, the crossbreeding of his two species has left him with many health complications in his life. A small cut can lead to deadly infections, he is very frail and his scales are much softer/more vulnerable than most other mers. But the worst of it is his omegan side.

The Drakes were ignorant to Tim’s needs growing up. Sure, he had a large tank, food every day, and plenty of puzzles and toys to keep him occupied. But as he grew, the tank stayed the same size, and the puzzles and toys were only fun the first few times you played with them. Bordem sets in quickly, but so does loneliness. Tim very quickly grew depressed in his lonely tank. His heat cycle was thrown off, his instincts were dull, he never had a pod to teach him to be an omega. When Bruce found him, he was like a lifeless doll.

The Drakes managed to avoid jail time with all their money, but rumors spread quickly of the abuse and soon their empire fell.

It took Bruce months to get Tim to warm up to his new podmates, and even longer for him to learn basic omega behaviors. Even now he will still ignore them and his pod still have to remind him to do things like scent his podmates or nest when he's in preheat. Things that should've been ingrained in him since was a pup. Even a pup out on his own, like Jason was, will still have the instincts for these things, but Tim was trapped and left to rot in a cage, his mind never had the chance to develop those needs.

Damien was conceived in the facility. Bruce had wanted to attempt an experiment with a mer that he had become close friends with, Talia. Talia, actually, was the one that brought up the idea. The mermaid loved Bruce dearly and had asked him to be her Sire. Bruce agreed. He loved Talia, but not as mates, and Talia was perfectly fine with that. She mostly saw Bruce as a worthy father for her pups, one that would breed a strong youngling. Bruce artificially inseminated one of Talia's eggs. Half mers were rare. You found them mostly on the black market, offsprings of a trafficked mer, being sold for half price. A mistake caught too late. Some mers and humans fall in love, and have a child of their own will, but that's even rarer.

It’s very hard to find a mer that is compatible with humans. The mer’s DNA needs to have certain traits to be able to conceive. Talia happened to have those traits.

Talia disappeared not long after the insemination. They never even found out if it caught or not before she left. But 9 years later, a half merpup was dropped off at the ocean entrance of the facility.

Damien was half barracuda, half human. Bruce Wayne's only blood son. The pup was aggressive and knew very little English having been born in the Arabian Gulf.

Talia was still nowhere to be seen, though it appeared she was the one who brought Damian the Wayne Center.

Dick, being the caring and loving omega he was, took to Damian like he was his mother. He nursed the pup and raised him. Jason helped teach the pup to control his predatory and alpha instincts. And Bruce did all he could to take care of his son from where he was on land. And Tim.. Tim hid from Damian.

Damian hated Tim. That much was apparent.

Tim, who had never known real love for the first half of his life and had slowly been making progress in understanding and excepting his new family regressed severely when Damain arrived, having been sent spiraling mentally.

Damian came in, teeth bared and ready to fight for his place as Bruce’s son, targeted Tim for being cared for by Bruce the most.

Jason ended up being the one to step up, though. When Tim had first arrived, Jason thought he was being replaced. He went from being the baby, the one that was cooed and coddled by Bruce and Dick, to suddenly being pushed aside for this random omega with no discernable scent that he's being forced to share a tank with. Jason attacked Tim, going straight for the throat. Dick managed to get Jason off of Tim in time to save his life. Bruce quickly had Jason sedated and moved into isolation while Tim was given life-saving procedures. Luckily, somehow, the but didn't get infected, but it left a nasty scar on his throat.

When Jason finally accepted Tim as pack, a year later, he cried for hours, apologizing over and over for the way he had treated the younger.

Tim forgave him easily and the two had grown closer since the incident.

Damien attempted to kill Tim. Tim was still being precariously cared for by Bruce and Dick. With his sicknesses and his tendency to neglect himself, the older two would seemingly give Tim more attention than the young alpha, and Damian hated Tim for it.

Eventually, Tim and Damian finally make up, but they never really get too close. They are always at each other’s throats, constantly fighting. But not more in a sibling way than an actually vicious way

(My original note on this:) An expectedly brilliant story full of angst and drama but a very happy ending!

I read this quite a while ago but this still leaves such an impression on me. This is Tim getting the doggy love he’s always needed, which slowly leads him to the family he’s always deserved. As a ‘Tim Joins the BatFam Early’ story, this one is brilliant. Sweet, fluffy with just the right amount of angst but an excellent happy ending.

I cannot recommend this one highly enough! I truly believe this story is a hidden gem. I mean, it has dragons, Tim as a dragon rider, dragon hunters, the Bat Family as knights, grappling with right or wrong (are the dragons their enemies or not?), secrets and secret identities (if I remember correctly), and a big final battle. What more could you ask for? This is one is wild ride!

Yuki Note:

Since we are about to have three Mer AUs in a row, I thought it best to include another story in a different universe. Witches and Familiars might only come under the category of Animals/Non-humans if you squint but I think it's nice to have one more story that's not a Mer AU just in case you're not into that.

In this universe of witches and familiars, Tim is a familiar pretending to be witch because the Bat Family already have a familiar in Bruce and certainly don’t need another in him. He’s always hidden this by pretending to just be bad at magic/not found his skill yet. Only, it starts to become a problem when Dick and Jason notice issues with their magic from Tim supplying them with too much on top of Bruce’s existing contribution so they suspect Bruce is ill – dying! Now, the angst is nigh as Tim has to decide, which is more important, his security in the family through keeping his little secret or relieving everyone’s worries about Bruce's health… but risk him being thrown out. Useless, unneeded, a hindrance not a help.

Honestly, this is such a fun read! A brilliant one-shot that I highly recommend! Check it out.

Strapping the goggles and mask on, he gave the all-clear and hopped into the water. It was practically frothing with bubbles, and if the situation were less serious he might have made a joke about Finding Nemo and a bubble volcano, but as it stood he could barely see a thing and his anxiety was sky high.

Studying mers for upwards of a decade had given him a healthy respect for how dangerous they were when humans threatened their territory, let alone when they were brooding with a grudge. He wanted what was best for Big Red, and he was absolutely certain that Red did not know that yet. He’d feel a lot better about all this if they could actually see the mer, but with how frothy the water was, Tim could barely see two feet in front of him.

He had a desperate, fleeting hope that he wasn't about to be murdered, but the shifting shadows around him weren't very promising.

This is a bit of an odd one. But it’s all in good fun. Jason is a pregnant mermaid/merman/merfolk/mer - yes, you read that right, he’s a pregnant cis male mer, but keep in mind he’s not human here so mer biology can work differently to human biology – and Tim is a mer specialist and, to a lesser extent Steph and Duke are humans helping him too. Throughout this story Tim and Jason bond as podmates (i.e. brothers of different species) even in the aftermath of Jason’s sexual assault by another mer as Tim fights for Jason to be released back into the ocean with his pod (in other words the other Bat Family members). If you are OK with pregnant Jason who has his baby in the actual story with allusions to his past sexual assault, then go ahead and try this one! Despite its odd details, it’s a good one and I do recommend it.

This is a sweet story of how Loch Gotham monster or mermaid/merman/mer Bruce (with the help of the mysterious Alfred) takes young kid Tim away from his absent parents to become his youngest son. They don’t do it immediately, though – at times, I felt the pacing was a little slow but still enjoyable. They wait and watch and see if Tim is really in need and then they offer him the option to join them not just steal him away from his home. It’s told in three parts from Tim’s perspective as he slowly learns about the mystery of the Loch Gotham monster with his camera in hand. Highly recommend!

Well, Mermay is almost done buuut, Aquatic batfam is always lovely. So which would you be fine hearing me ramble about-slash-work on the Oneshots lol

Eel Mer-   Eeels. Long wriggly friends. Now with apposable thumbs! And Bruce's growing adoption problem- and a slight family curse but shhh.

Merfolk-   I mean, fish! A mixture of modern and fantasy with the merfolk of Gotham waters being cryptids compared to the rest of the seas. The bats think it's hilarious.

Octopus Mer-   Octopi are fun. And you ever see the videos of octopus continuously escaping their tanks? Imagine if the octopi were vigilantes with weapons. Yeaah...

Crabtaur-  Lazarus crabs? Lazarus crabs! And a curse to them all that they have to work around in their day to day lives.

Nudibranch-   Sea Slugs? Indeed. And a lot of them poisonous and using the poisons in their work- along with messing with each other.

Mershark-   Sharks! Includes Flashpoint-esque Thomas being a murder grandpa and past AlfredxMarthaxThomas, along with Bruce being less murderous

Kraken-   Squids. Think giant merfolk but well, giant squids. Fantasy-esque AU with Gotham being the largest population of pirates & crime on the seas.

Sea Dragon- Sea serpents mixed with seahorses and a bit more. Includes the kids being bio-kids via blood ritual and a couple galas. Also some shapeshifting.

The Mangroves provide food, shelter and maintain the land. For that reason, the sirens of the mangrove swamp and its surrounding lakes and rivers reveer the trees as sacred offspring of the original World Tree. They live in giant mangroves with cloth or straw forming roofs. Their leftovers and droppings help to fertilise the trees, and the smaller mangrove roots provide a safe place for guppies to play.

To desecrate or, heaven forbid, destroy one of these trees is invite to invite the siren’s wrath. But one of the older kids dared him to do it for 50 whole dollars. Jason just needed to go in, spray some rude message, and get out. And he’d be able to afford warm meals for two weeks.

That was until Poison Ivy caught him. Jason’s body twists into agony. scales and fins burst through skin. For his crime of despoiling the sacred grove, Poison Ivy owns him now, until his debt is repaid.

[REDACTED] did not comment the footage and left again just as swiftly. He also left me a small folder of drawings of the pod. I have taken the liberty to add some notes to them. I won’t deny that I am unnerved by [REDACTED] response to… well, I suppose I may just as well say it. A traitor.

[REDACTED] has never been anything but loyal to [REDACTED]. This apparent “change of heart”… I don’t buy it.

But I won’t deny that I’m also a little grateful. These weeks without any sightings of the pod have made me anxious.

In this AU only batfamily members (and the al Ghuls) are Mermaids (except Alfred, I will talk more about it later)

Bruce : Deep water Siren

Dick : Surface Siren

Jason : Can live in both, but surface Mermaid.

Tim : Arrecife Mermaid

Damian : Deep Ocean Siren

The reason Bruce lives so close to the surface is because of his sons; none of them (except Jason) can live in deep waters, so Bruce is forced to live near the surface. This is not good for his health, but he ain't telling and no one is asking.

He was raised by Alfred, a navy soldier who dedicated his life to operating submarines on solo missions. Alfred would always visit Bruce when he was little, but once he grew old enough and Alfred retired, Bruce would be the one doing the visiting. After retaiment fron the navy, Alfred became some kind of mermaid biologist, but really lives from his retaiment money and doesn't publish his works.

Near the shore, where Alfred lives, during one of Bruce visits, is when the Graysons are killed, and Bruce adopts Dick.

When Dick begins his migratory travels (his species being migratory, and there's no fight with Bruce about it), Bruce meets Jason, who was orphaned because his mother died from a chemical spill near Gotham, and his father was killed by the coast guard for sinking ships for human mafias. Tim joins after Jason is (incorrectly) assumed dead by poachers. His mother died during labor, and his father is never present in his life, only visiting occasionally to bring food. Tim is both scared and admires Bruce, who is called "The Bat" by humans because, since Jason's death, he has been sinking all kinds of ships that get close to Gotham's shore. Damian joins after being kicked out of the al Ghul family because he didn't inherit any of Bruce's genes and wasn't of the same species. Instead, he ends up as a barracuda like the rest of his family, just a darker color.

Bruce is somewhat of a local legend/hero in the city of Gotham because he would save boats from poachers and pirates, as well as sinking contraband ships. But during his time sinking ships after the "death" of Jason is when Superman and the Justice League hear about him and think there is a monster in Gotham waters... but in the end, he falls in love.

The only one who can actually talk with the family is Aquaman, so they have a good friendship.

“I don’t trust that guy,” Jason narrowed his eyes, jabbing a finger at the weird not-human and his half-human son chatting with fully-human Bruce and fully-human Alfred.

“Relax, Jay,” their fully selkie not-human brother drawls with his legs in their giant pool filled with aquarium-grade water, “It’s just Uncle Clark with his son.”

Tim shrugs, “I dunno, they look weird… and smell weird. Cass says theyre- and I quote- really weird, if Cass says they’re weird? Sorry, Dick, they’re weird.”

“So…” Dick puts on a cheshire smile and leans forward, “you can even say they’re Super -weird? Eh? Wha- AUGH!”

Tim yelped, flinging himself out of the pool as Jason lurched forward to yank the selkie into the water. Cass was laughing below the surface, a wide smile on her face as Dick floundered and screeched. Jason had his claws hooked into the selkie’s pants with a bright grin.

“BRUCE!” Dick screeched, the sound of struggle clear within this floor of the manor, and Tim pulls his caudul fin out of the water in disgust, “ALFRED! HELP, I’M- AUAGDHGAGAHDHFPFPSPFGSAGO—”

“What is going on here?” Bruce walked over to examine the scene with an incredulous expression, “Jason, let your brother go!”

The lionfish mer hissed in displeasure, but released the selkie after a stern look from the butler.

“BRUCE!” Dick gasped dramatically, clawing himself onto the floor. His Pelt remained dry, but everything else about Dick was sopping wet. There was even a puddle forming under him.

Tim eyed him warily, flattening his cranial fin as Damian approached with the other half-human, half not-human spawn of the not-human Dick had named “Clark”.

“Grayson, cease you incessant chatter,” Damian huffed before addressing his… “friend”, “Jon, feast your eyes upon our mers.”

The older human walked over while Bruce ranted to Clark about his children’s “dramatics”. Meanwhile, Damian was still talking, “Timothy is a pedigree mer. He is born of a prestigious bloodline, and his scales echo his worth. The previous humans he resided with were not providing him with the proper enrichment a mer of his value should have, and so Father rescued him.”

Tim grimaced at the human’s description before glancing at his red-dappled tail, “Thanks?”

“What do you have to say about me?” Jason swam over and propped himself upon the ledge of the pool with a grin.

Damian sniffed and gave Jason a side-long glare while “Jon” giggled.

“He looks pretty,” the bright boy commented while his… brother(?) hummed.

“I think this guy looks prettier, kinda like a koi.”

Jon examined Tim’s tail before nodding, “Hmm, you’re right!”

Tim frowned, feeling suddenly self conscious at the attention.

Damian sniffed, “Please do not scrutinize Timothy! He is a sensitive mer, and I will not allw you to unsettle him! Jason, on the other hand, is hardier- though I advise you to keep a healthy distance from his spines. His piscine breed is that of a lionfish-”

Jason grins and flashes his fins like the show-off he is.

“-and Father rescued him from an illegal mer trade,” Damian finished.

“What about her down there?” the older half-human asked, peer down at Cass, who popped up to wave and tap Tim’s tail. With a smile, he flicked his tail and artfully drenched the older half-human with the pool water.

“Kon!” the little one exclaimed in shock, and Tim darted away before Bruce coild spot him.

“Jason!” Bruce called again, “We don’t splash guests either!”

“But-!”

“I doesn’t matter if he was annoying, we don’t splash guests!” Bruce sighed in exasperation before returning to his conversation with an amused Clark and an equally entertained Alfred.

Damian continued on with his infodumping, “Cassandra is a mer who escaped from a facility ran by my grandfather, who was trying to create the ultimate weapon for marine warfare.”

“Oh!” Kon blinked in surprise, “That… was not what I was expecting!”

“I kinda feel bad for them,” Jon commented, but Jason waved him off.

“Don’t worry about Cass. If she was in any real danger, she’ll just electrocute you and then rip your throat out!”

“That’s so cool!” Jon chirped eagerly while Kon remained slightly peturbed.

Tim shrugged, “I guess, but it’s kinda… just our lives. Dick has seen so much more of the world than any of us.”

“Maybe, but he’s an asshole,” Jason replied and Cass nodded in agreement. The selkie jerked upright with an affronted gasp and a mock-offended expression.

“Excuse me! I am not an asshole!”

“Mhm, sure not,” Jason countered with a flap of his hand. Before Dick could continue his defense, Bruce approached once more with Clark and Alfred at his side.

The not-human helped Dick to his feet before addressing the two half-human boys, “Alright, boys. It’s getting pretty late, so we should head back to the farm before Ma and Pa worry.”

The boys chorused their agreement before… floating and flying out of the manor? Tim thinks that not-human and his half-human sons were weird.

Bruce took in a breath before kneeling down in front of them, “Okay, kids. I know your thoughts on strangers in the manor-”

Jason interrupted with a flat expression, “If they weren’t kids, then I would’ve stung them.”

Tim huffed as Bruce’s expression tightened, “Okay, I wouldn’t have done something as extreme as Jason, but I really don’t like strangers in the manor… I kinda don’t mind that Kon, though.”

“What?! Tim!” Jason gasped in offense and Tim groans.

“Shut up, Jason! He had shiny things, okay!”

“Timmy has a crush!” Cass teased swimming over to wrap herself around Tim’s torso and drag him underwater. Very wisely, Tim decided it was in his best interest to not fight with the electric eel.

“Ugh, I wish I’d sting him sooner!”

“You will not be stinging anyone,” Bruce admonished, and Tim could hear Jason boo in dissatisfaction before joining Cass and Tim underwater.

“Father, I support Jason’s idea,” Damian chimed in, “we should allow him to sting Timothy’s potential paramore, for Timothy is a regal creature and shall not be paired up with such a thing below his standing!”

Tim groans in exasperation, the sound echoed by Bruce as he thrashed his red-white tail. Suddenly, the water churned and a ringed seal joined them in the pool, his eyes bright with mischief and whimsy.

As Bruce watched his fish (and seal) children tussel together underwater, he pulls Damian close against his side. Alfred rests his hand on Bruce’s shoulder, and the man cannot help but marvel at how far all of them have come since their first introduction into this… messy and patchwork family who now all call the Wayne Manor home…

Bruce could not be happier.

I decided to make Steph a moon jelly, since those are graceful and purple (like her)

got hit with a stroke of inspiration a while ago

i drew batman as a thresher shark, nightwing as a flying fish, and the red hood as an orca :D

I'm gonna make the rest of them too; it's just a process of scrounging up the executive function for it
