I have always liked the idea of the school for mutants being very literally a school, and I know yes it is but I mean in the sense of if you want to be an X-men, you have to be a teacher. They have exams at the end of years, they have Ofsted checks (for those who don’t know what they are, it’s essentially people coming to check that the school is good at being a school) and they have teachers for every subject, which brings me to my next point;
“I’m Right You’re Wrong, Here’s What The X-Men (‘97 specifically) Would Teach As Subjects”.
(Also this is based off of UK school system but I use American terms like “seniors” and “AP” and “Midterms”)
Maths Teacher Gambit is surprising, for a guy most assume to not being entirely smart, an idiot goof off who’s the comedic relief. But you need to know numbers to gamble, and that he does with being very well versed in mathematics way past an AP level. He’s made the promise for every senior class that he will teach them to play blackjack on the final day, and has only ever lost once. Which is when the rule of “no betting real money” came into place.
English teacher Jean reminds me of the kind of teacher who would let the social outcasts into her class for their lunch breaks. The kids more likely to be bullied and she will fight tooth and nail to make sure those kids bullies don’t come into that classroom. they’re loud and shout and shouldn’t really be in there but no one has to know and she certainly won’t be telling them to leave any time soon.
Physics teacher Magneto is very specific to my highschool experience I’ll be honest. I had a physics teacher who was an actual Dr with a PHD and he hated being there. His classroom has (well, had since the building was knocked down about 5 years ago now) this one cabinet that was never fully shut, it was always open just about an inch or two, and he’d stand with his foot hovering just above it and then slam down on it whenever we got too loud so the noise would shut us up. That’s very magneto coded. Erik Lehnsherr would purposefully make the cabinet always a little open so he can do that.
Biology teacher morph is just a funny concept, a person whose physical form and change and morph into just about anything. They are considered one of the “fun” teachers, you could easily convince them to let you watch a movie all class as long as it was biology centred, but with classics like Osmosis Jones, you’re not stuck watching a documentary about animals giving birth.
Chemistry teacher Storm does not fuck about with children’s education. She is not strict by any means whatsoever, she just will not bend to someone saying they want to watch a film or should do a practical instead of theory. She has a set curriculum. She knows what she will be doing by the first week of the summer holidays and already has the room set up all pretty and organised.
Geography teacher Scott has the unfortunate job of telling his students that, they just won’t be looking at memorising country flags and politics. But hey!! Rocks are cool!! Beach shores are cool! Lake formations are cool! He’s the vice principal and designated nerd teacher. He once beat the elite four for a student on their copy of Pokémon Red because the student promised they’d do well in their midterms. Yes, he was in his 30s when the game came out, he doesn’t care.
History teacher Logan is a walking fun facts book. He’s exhausted, goes on smoke breaks on every gap of time he has, dislikes his job and will randomly get passionate about one specific topic, and will then dedicate his next 4 classes to that topic. Having been through a lot of modern history with personal experiences, he’s able to bring a lot of souvenirs to show his classes. Bullets, helmets, clothes he once wore hundreds of years ago, his personal memories of basic inventions like the vaccine.
PE (physical education) teacher Rogue is full of fun sports games, you can join any kind of sports team you can imagine and if you ask nicely enough, she’ll put Just Dance on a projector in the sports hall so you can just play that instead of actually play an actual sport. As long as you leave her class exhausted and without time to have a shower before your next class then she’s succeeded in making whoever your next teacher is absolutely miserable (bonus points if it’s Logan with his enhanced sense of smell).
Art teacher jubilee does believe that there is a right way to critique art. And she can be a little in your face about it. She does think you can have wrong opinions especially when it comes to your own art. If she overhears you saying you didn’t something wrong, she’ll scream into a megaphone “adapt, improvise, overcome!”. There are no mistakes! She’s eccentric, bubbly, creative and brilliant, the only one suited for the job.
It wouldn’t be a school without budget cuts. That’s why Nightcrawler is both the languages and religions teacher and he’s beloved at both. He comes up with roleplay scenarios the students can play to help learn their chosen languages, he has varied religious texts in his room and when he says to the students “I’ll pray for toy during exam season” he’s not actually joking.
(I forgot about Hank I’m actually going to cry he’s one of my favourites and I forgot about him. He’ll be in pt two or smth.)

every time I remember that the hit show supernatural made God, the literal God from the Bible, canonically bisexual but couldn’t do the same with a random guy who hunts monsters it actually makes me feel physically ill.. like blasphemy is okay but we draw the line at making the main character a little bit queer because it would “upset the heterosexuals men”? okay ig… and it’s so funny to me that they tried SO bad to make dean like really really straight and macho and a manly womanizer (I mean dude has literal porn brain and is obsessed with cars and is a film nerd) And still is the number 1 bissexual boy.. I mean no one that into cowboys is 100% straight 🙄 and if they actually wanted him to be that much of a cishet guy WHY would they make him have a codependent homosexual friendship with his best friend for more than a decade ?? and we have so much subtext to corroborates it that it’s actually insane.
and it’s also rlly funny to me that sam would be the most obvious choice for a queer storyline. like i’m not sure this is true but i heard somewhere that he actually was supposed to like be lgbt and that it’s implied in the show he’s pan bc he basically have sex w/ everyone and doesn’t care (like monsters and stuff). i wholeheartedly disagree bc sure he hited a demon and a werewolf and a kitsune and God knows what more But it still were just women and for me he’s still just straight 💀 we do have gabriel however and i would say that’s a valid argument but i don’t actually like them together because of the whole torturing-sam-every-tuesday-over-and-over-again but it’s still a good take ig. again this is just my opinion But anyways doesn’t matter my point Is that sam always felt like a freak and wanted to be normal and like was more open minded and “less-macho-toxic-behavior” than dean. he was a theater kid and talked about his feelings and all. STILL THO dean went and become The bissexual icon (Not Sam, Dean!!). and the fact that he was more manly actually only emphasized to his sexuality (and him being closeted) and sam being the straight one, and bare with me here. as sam winchester once wisely said “well you are kind of butch they probably think you're compinsating.” (to dean asking why people always assumed they were gay) and like this is so true, sam always felt comfortable in himself and like his nerdier and less cool strong man personality. But dean, oh, dean, no, no, no. and it could all be linked to john. we know how much dean wanted to gain his father approval and respect, all he ever wanted was for john to be proud of him. so he’d listen to the same music as john, same clothes… and so on. but when we really see a glance of him, we realize he’s actually much more “““girly””” (sorry for the term i lacked a better one) than he shows, Especially when compared to sam—who’s supposed to be the more girly one (again sorry for the term lol) or whatever. dean canonically likes taylor swift, chick flick films, actually liked when a woman made him wear underwear, the bailarinas shoe were “speaking to him” in that one ep of cursed objects, and so on. and every time he makes fun of sam for doing something not-manly-enough (like drinking lemon water or drinking from tiny coups) he eventually goes and do the same thing 😭 and i’m 100% sure that the writers just thought “haha funny scene this really straight deadly man does something not so convencional/more feminine(?) haha comedy relief time!!” but it actually just made him have a whole perfect queer background developed in the series. specially with the fact that He Does Overcompensate. why is he always flirting with women, why is he so butch and scary, always talking about straight sex and so on? because he’s really just deep in the closet. and it makes so much sense with john being his father, with him having to hunt two lesbians nuns in his 17 bday, always having to be strong and macho and cool and perfect—and therefore straight. even without cas, dean really does immaculate the bissexual experience and i’m so sorry but this is just true.
and now pointing to the subtext that i mentioned in the first paragraph (lol i can’t believe i’m making a whole rant as to why dean winchester is a confirmed bisexual), that whole confession to that priest where he says he wants experience new feelings, new people, FOR THE FIRST TIME. that always that the show mentioned a gay couple it ALWAYS focused on dean—not sam, DEAN. the gay hunters, the gay couple on the bar that the cupid “made”, the two cosplayers partners… the fact that every time that dean liked something it was borderline fangirl (gay) obsessive (the dr. sexy episode, that wrestler fighter). he Had a gay thing—and was all flustered about it. he flirted with a guy throughout charlie. THE MALE SIREN. the male siren like after that ep i was 100% convinced that man was not straight. he had a hot demon sumer with crowley?!!! and it’s so funny to me that not one of these things involves castiel, so if they really wanted to make dean be that straight why would they do that?? and only to dean, not even once to sam. Like. and not to mention all the homoeretic tension with benny??? sam never had a male best friend like that.. all of that and i didn’t even entered on destiel. Because this then really just confirms that he is Not straight. even if he wasn’t In Love with cas, they had something going on and the fact that if cas was a girl it would 100% be canon and filmed and Everyone would ship—and I really mean everyone—it just makes me go fucking insane. they could’ve had it all. the fanfic episodes, the parallels between dean and cas and “real couples”, ruby and cas duality and the fact that sam indeed had a relationship w/ her. Anyway i’m a # bi dean truth believer and i know this bc same boy # happy pride month to my fav bissexual boy in the whole world
also to anyone that says that “destiel” was unrequited love yes it kinda of was but only bc dean was so deep in the closet, he did love cas. he was indeed a bissexual man. i’ll die on that hill.
#dean winchester#spn#supernatural#deancas#destiel#castiel#bi dean winchester#rant abou queer dean#it’s clear text#he’s literally a homossexual man

You say talk to me about Viktor and I am here to talk about Viktor. What films would this man watch? Would he have a favourite film? I'm such a film snob that I am so afraid to go there, but would he fucking cry on Star Wars? Is he truly a nerd as we paint them? Or he doesn't even bother with that and plays computer games instead? Or is he an utter man out of this era and just reads books? Does he love The Brief History of Time? Help. HELP WHAT ARE THEESE MAN'S HOBBIES he cannot just be into science, I do not accept this reality. My HC is that he loves Frank Herbert and hates the new adaptation of Dune :v He also probably likes Philip K. Dick. But that's BITCH BASIC I need MORE. And now a praise: your writing takes me to another dimension. It's amazing how I read your stuff and feel no negativity, no worry, just pure appreciation that I am able to interact with something so poetically hot. Loved Fornication, made me want to get drunk and low-key jealous of Reader's relationship with Viktor.
OKAY SO he’s either some niche videogames nerd or he’s that one annoying pretentious fuck who only ever plays chess (this has nothing to do with my fic /srs) it’s just a very tricky 50/50 cause he could easily be BOTH. he looks like could be… idk…. a fucking path of exile 2 nerd. or like he’s prejudiced towards people who game period point blank. bro’s steam account is either terrific or terrifically non-existent.
GOD it really is a tough one. i feel like act 1 viktor could be the pretentious fuck. HOWEVER. act 2 viktor is an exhausted guy who just wants to go home and play some sekiro. do you see the vision…..
as for the books he reads…. he doesn’t read fiction. same goes for movies. like if we’re talking about modern aus i feel like he’s just SO out of touch with what young people even like these days. give him a documentary and he’ll eat it up. i feel like he’d be one of them annoyed mfs who went to see oppenheimer and proceeded to complain about it being not 100% historicaly accurate. and if you make him watch breaking bad he’ll be annoyed it had dubious chemistry here and there.
— viktor, they can’t give us a step-by-step guide on how to cook crystal meth. that’s literally ILLEGAL
— i couldn’t care less. science is a commitment. a flimsy law-suit is a small price to pay for maintaining accuracy
but anyways i feel like he would also be into history. documentaries, memoirs of various historical figures, everything tediously lovely and cool and ACCURATE. i don’t know. i like pulling him out of arcane and placing him into some 80-90s dark academia au. you will never catch me writing him in an ACTUALLY modern setting because i like painting him as this sickeningly charming, detached from the pop-culture sassy man. i love pretentious guys okay. they’re so annoying i want to eat them
i also have this random hc that viktor used to be REALLY into medical shit once but he never wanted to become a doctor…. why? that i don’t know. he’s just. such an erudite when it comes to all kinds of complex stuff. when he read some victorian classics in highschool (dracula, for instance) he was absolutely furious and declared it a horror book not because of all the tame vampire stuff, but because the blood-transfusions were conducted at random (blood types were discovered only in 1901, and before that victorian doctors would just. choose the donor based on whoever looked the least pale that day. i’m genuinely surprised we’ve made it this long. read all this in viktor’s voice, by the way, i feel like he knows all these cools random facts and overshares them A LOT)
your frank herbert hc is totally valid though. I CAN SEE THAT. YES ABSOLUTELY???
like i said — MODERN modern aus are not my jam to write but i love reading that when it’s done tastefully. and you never disappoint <3
—
AND THANK YOU FOR PRAISING ME QUITE SO HIGHLY WTF IM LITERALLY CRYING I DONT DESERVE U

To be honest, this is more of me being a musical theatre nerd and kid throughout most of my life. But something I want to say is that Hazbin Hotel was half of the musical Vivziepop and her stans want you to believe, then the show to me wasted the perfect opportunity for a opening number. The worst part to me is that Vivziepop also had the perfect (or atleast really great) reference to do it.
Like, imagine after Charlie tells the story of Adam and Lilith, how Lucifer fell (basically the whole beginning storybook narration.) We cut to a shot where the exorcists are flying away from Hell after another extermination and it pans down to the Pride Ring, which is very much destroyed with some buildings even in flames. Then a different opening number song could start playing as we’re introduced to the Pride Ring and its inhabitants.
If this opening sounds somewhat familiar, then you’ll likely know what the reference I’m talking about is. It’s The Nightmare Before Christmas’s This is Halloween
To people who haven’t seen the film, I’ll give a short rundown on its opening number. Before TNBC opening number begins, we are shown a scene of the different holiday doors before the shot pans into the Halloween door. Cue the opening number, and we are introduced to the background Halloween Town residents and some important characters (Sally, Oogie Boogie, etc)
If Hazbin Hotel took a similar approach to its opening number, it would honestly help most of the problems. We would be introduced to Hell (or at least the Pride Ring) smoothly, side characters who would have major roles later would already be shown to us, we would get a better look at exterminations, essentially most of the character problems would’ve been fixed (or at least toned down)
Also, while I don’t really care about any of the songs, they aren’t exactly the type of musical songs I like/aren’t memorable to me personally. I personally hate how they come out of nowhere. In the first episode, there is literally no transition to Charlie’s song in the slightest. No instrumental build up, nothing. Because no, characters in musicals don’t start singing out of nowhere.

Back with more shit
So, I've seen the "Husk fighting with throwing cards" post lately and I keep thinking about how I always assumed he just had Gambit (Marvel universe)'s powers. Gambit's powers are a bit... Unclear at times, but the general gist should be that he "mentally create, control, and manipulate pure kinetic energy to his desire." Which is usually used as him throwing something and that something fucking explodes.
He shows up in the X-Men films, gambling, and uses regular playing cards to explode basically Wolverine.
What I'm getting at is that I want Husk's weapons to be regular objects, and he chose playing cards and dice because he's gotta commit to the bit at this point and it's too late to go back. But in reality, any projectile would do. He could throw, with his hands, a bullet and it would explode someone's face.
-🐇
Honestly yes!!! This tracks so much! I don’t know too much about Gambit so I’m gonna @ @xxqueenofdragonsxx because they’re a nerd for this stuff.
But yeah from what I’ve seen and the way you described it this totally works! Him being able to put his power into any object but choosing to use them for the *aesthetic*. Also with the fact that we DO see him in the flashback seemingly using the same/similar pack of cards it holds up.
I know some decks of cards that have some kind of metallic fold, so maybe when he had to fight angels they got a thin layer of that in angelic steel, that way it can actually do the angels in.
Imagine playing with them normally and getting a paper cut, rip 😭

[question/positive nerd rant +hc]
first off, I’m absolutely obsessed with your I’m Gonna Make This Place Your Home fanfic!! I love the details you put for the lore/plot and how they have a purpose, and the easter eggs/hc’s from the shows/films😭 I also love reading your notes at the end of the chapters, and every time I get a notification of an update I get so excited!!🖤🖤
one thing I’m very excited +curious to find out is what you have planned for barb’s world tour!! I’m personally hoping/headcannoning branch helps her, I just think it would be interesting to see, and he just shreds his guitar like an absolute legend and he and his sister just bond and have fun [maybe even ignoring his feeling of “this is wrong” as he does it but he loves his big sister too much to say anything]
omg okay back to what I was going to ask, would branch ever hear val’s dad sing? like if he was doing a concert and he went with the gang (+barb and billy too?) cause, y’know, support and he’s still learning about rock music still, and if drag sang “thunderstruck” by AC/DC, would branch like it? i like to think branch would particularly favour/like the guitar chords/riffs and it would effect him (also the energy of the crowd adding to the experience if this was a point he grew used to rock troll crowds)
reason I ask is– maybe it’s a lil silly, but is because as I was listening to this song,, idk,, I just started getting excited thinking of barb, branch, and the rock trolls during the world tour on the angler bus heading close to a tribe location (classical?), and branch doing the honour of getting every amped and getting hyped by playing the guitars chords of “Thunderstruck” while Barb gives a mini speech and then sings the song before they hit the location to get the string
[sorry for weird ask and honestly basically just geeking out ahh]
Thank you so much!
I've mentioned it here but the World Tour arc is going to be completely new and different thanks to Branch's presence. I hope you like what I have planned for it!
I could see Branch liking Thunderstruck! It fits Barb's vibe so he'd like it on that account.

Weekend Top Ten #676
Top Ten Queer Couples
I don't know if any of you noticed, but it was Valentine’s Day recently. I do try to tie these things in a little bit to what’s going on in the world (without every single week just been ten things that are on fire or top ten apocalypses or whatever). Anyway, I was trying to think of a possible list that was sort-of romance-adjacent, and I’m pretty sure I've talked about couples a couple of times, so I was looking for a different angle. And, inspired by watching a few things recently with really awesome same-sex couples, I thought a more LGBTQ-focused list would be a nice shout.
Whilst I’m obviously not the best person to speak about it, and with the caveat that there’s always much further we still have to go, it’s very good to see how far queer representation has come in popular culture since I was a teenager. I remember the brouhaha when Tom Hanks made Philadelphia; I’ve not seen the film in decades, but I imagine nowadays that its depiction of a gay relationship probably looks incredibly dated and stereotyped. Everyone kicked up a fuss over same-sex kissing in Eastenders; now you’ve got stuff like Grey’s Anatomy, which I think is about as mainstream as US shows can get, and is chock-full of all sorts of queer representation.
So it’s been great to watch and read about all different forms of love (“form” being an operative word here, as you’ll soon see). I know that corporations only really care about something if it’s making them money, but artists still like to tell stories, and that’s resulted in much better representation and some fantastic characters. And that’s what I’m celebrating here; to be honest, the queerness of it isn’t really an issue. These just happen to be ten couples that I absolutely adore, and just happen to be gay.
I’m sure there are some culturally-huge relationships that I’ve missed off here. Willow and Tara, for instance, from Buffy; I might need to turn in my nineties nerd membership card, but I didn’t watch Buffy religiously back when it was on, so they didn’t quite strike as hot for me as they did for lots of my peers (was it one of the first really prominent same-sex relationships on a TV show like that? I dunno. Maybe I should do some research). And no doubt there are some big dramas or earnest films that I’ve never seen – The L-Word, Moonlight, My Beautiful Laundrette – the exclusion of which proves what a first-base charlatan I am. But I like what I like, and these are the characters that speak to me.
Oh, and one final thing. I tend to fall in love with optimistic romances – sadly, a lot of gay stories in the past have come coated in a veneer of tragedy (which to a degree is understandable if you’re telling a story about people who society is trying to rip asunder). But also I think this can add a dose of toxicity to the relationship, such as in Brokeback Mountain, which is excellent and tender and beautiful but also shows a relationship buckling under the weight of self-hate, repression, and tragedy. So that’s why Heath and Jake ain’t on here, if you were wondering. But I think – spoiler alert! – all the couples featured here actually do get together at the end. Woohoo! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Chromedome & Rewind (IDW’s Transformers, 2012-18): ha, you thought I’d be talking about actual human people didn’t you? It was all a trick! I’m just a basic bot and this was all an excuse to discuss Transformers again. It’s a bit of a cheat, because to a certain extent Transformers are genderless; but at the same time, most of them present as one gender most of the time, and the various books written by James Roberts can be described as “sad gay robots in space”. Of all the same-sex couples in the franchise – Cyclonus and Tailgate, Ratchet and Drift, Arcee and Greenlight – Chromedome and Rewind stick out for their enduring love, the complexity of their relationship, and how it overcomes multiple tragedies. Both of them have sins in their past, both of them are damaged, and they both kinda got together on the rebound, but in the end reaffirm their bond and have what can only be the happiest of endings under the circumstances. Plus they’re the focus of one of the most hearbreaking scenes in the whole franchise. I love you.
Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy (DC Comics): how much is a relationship based on what we are actually told, and how much is just fans vibing? Because for years Harley and Ivy were canonically best friends, appearing in each others’ stories, committing crimes together, but not technically romantic. But fans loved them together, and even if Ivy was an eco-terrorist, she was still better for Harley than the Joker. Ultimately the teasing and the hinting culminated in several continuities establishing them as officially a couple – especially the animated Harley Quinn show, which foregrounds their relationship over a season’s arc, and presents them as besotted – but eventually, officially, they became an item in mainstream DC continuity. The cooky criminal, the eco-warrior; they’re great together.
Vi & Caitlyn (Arcane, 2019-24): it might be recency bias pushing these two gals up the list (I only watched Arcane this year) but these two have such a strong bond that’s really elegantly told over the course of the series. Tough-as-nails petty crim/bruiser Vi and upper-crust posho-turned-cop Cait seem like oil and water, but there’s an instant mutual attraction that simmers and hints at itself throughout a season, before they share a kiss and then go off the rails. Their coming back together, and the wholehearted trust they share, is a cornerstone of the last act of the series; they are, indeed, the dirt under each others’ nails.
Corky & Violet (Bound, 1996): only by a whisker does this couple claim the title of “sauciest sex scene featuring a character called Violet” on this list. But the blending of queer romance and nineties noir is exquisite in this delightful pre-Matrix Wachowskis effort. Gangster’s moll Violet and grungy handywoman Corky have an instant and intense chemistry, and in their attempts to double-cross the mob and escape from Corky’s dangerous beau, we root for them and want them to succeed in a tense game of cat and mouse. It’s also an interesting film to examine in that we now understand how it’s shot with a female gaze, and is something of a landmark in American queer cinema (I feel like I need to stress, you really did not often get gay protagonists in 1996, even in quote-unquote “indie” films).
Captain Holt & Kevin (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 2013-21): Raymond Holt and Kevin Cozner (up there with “Lorenzo Zoil” in great comic names) are a great example of leaning into and challenging stereotypes. On the one hand, they’re upper-middle-class refined gay men, into fine art and opera; but as a Black man working for the police, and in a position of authority and power on the show, Holt is a figure not commonly seen in TV (and, indeed, allows the show to dig into issues of racial and sexual politics). But it’s them as a couple that I love; Holt is one of the great comic creations, a preternaturally analytic man seemingly, almost Spock-like in his avoidance of contractions or colloquialisms. But their scenes together as a couple show how their similarities and differences complement each other, and the deep, loving bond they share.
David & Patrick (Schitt’s Creek, 2015-20): like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Schitt’s Creek is one of those comedies where you’re laughing at the absurd characterisation so much you don’t realise how nuanced the acting and writing is, and so when you discover that you’ve fallen head over heels in love with these people it strikes you off guard. David is a rather shrill, self-centred man, seemingly irritated or disgusted with everything he sees in the town; Patrick is down-to-earth and humble, and has never really had a gay relationship before. But they hit it off right away, with tremendous chemistry, and seeing David finally being honest about his needs and feelings, and the truthful way they respond to one another, is delightful. Also I love how the world presented by writer/actor Dan Levy is one in which there’s basically no homophobia, so despite the weirdness of this backwater town, everyone loves David and Patrick just as much as we do.
Red & Blue (This is How You Lose the Time War, 2019): Time War is a really strange book, an almost elegiac, poetic, non-linear tale of two warriors on opposing sides who – despite the phenomenal risks involved – stalk each other before falling in love, leaving gifts and letters to each other than blossom slowly over millennia, knowing the other will discover it, but also needing to hide it from their superiors. The trippy nature of the chronology, and the flowing prose, means you’re never sure of where you are, but as the book goes on, the strength of the love between the two women grows ever stronger. A fascinating, rewarding work, and a deeply affecting love story. Also, how great is that title?
Adora & Catra (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, 2018-20): a real slow-burner of a love story, and one in which – perhaps a bit unusually – a lot of the emotional heavy lifting is done by the antagonist. Adora is She-Ra, and she leaves the Horde and her lifelong best friend Catra behind to fight for good; Catra feels betrayed, and so their conflict has a deep, personal edge. It becomes increasingly obvious the feelings they have for one another, but Catra’s are skewed by jealousy and pride, whilst Adora’s are smothered by her sense of duty and guilt. But in the end it’s Catra who comes back, Catra who refuses to leave, and ultimately Catra who saves Adora when she needs it most. It’s a subtle, nuanced, emergent love story, but given the subject matter and the target audience, it’s all the more welcome.
Armand & Albert (The Birdcage, 1996): I said how unusual Bound was for foregrounding a gay couple in the mid-nineties, but here’s another one. Here we’re shown a middle-aged couple who’ve raised a son and run a business together, and the only reason they’re particularly exceptional is in contrast to the more “conventional”, WASP-y, Republican family headed by Gene Hackman. The film shows not just their tenderness as parents, but their tenderness together: despite their arguments and drama, they really love and care for one another, in a real lived-in way; a couple who’ve just spent years in each other’s company. And we can see how much more content they are being their honest selves, against the artificial idea of a perfect nuclear family that Hackman strives for. Armand and Anbert: relationship goals. Super funny too. And exceptional facial hair.
Bashir & Garek (Star Trek: Lower Decks, 2024): okay, this one is a massive cheat, but what the hell. I nearly went with the two doctors, Stamets and Culber, from Discovery – not only the first gay couple depicted on Star Trek, but Anthony Rapp’s Stamets is the pretty much the first gay character in the show full-stop. However, I’m being my usual silly self and indulging in a bit of joy. Bashir and Garek had a fantastic relationship throughout Deep Space Nine: Bashir the young, brilliant, rather big-headed doctor, full of belief in the strength of Starfleet; Garek the older, conniving, duplicitous Cardassian spy. The cat-and-mouse game of mistrust and affection that played out over the series spawned a million ships; in fact, the actors themselves pretty much treated it as a romance. Lower Decks introduces us to an alternate universe version of the couple, where they actually are a couple; both medics, both in Starfleet, but still possessing the same adorable characteristics, and – crucially – married and everything. Long time coming, but well worth the wait.
Blimey, quite a few that didn’t quite make the cut, eh? Both Wiccan & Hulkling and Apollo & Midnighter would have made the list but I felt I hadn’t quite read enough comics featuring them. I kind of wanted to include Jamie and Marian, from last year’s Drive-Away Dolls (original title: Drive-Away Dykes, which I think we can all agree is better), but despite finding them such a sweet and adorable pair, I thought maybe that was the recency bias talking. But they can be number eleven. Also, you should watch Drive-Away Dolls, a really underappreciated mini-gem.
Anyway, this was a fun list, and now I’m feeling all soppy and happy and romantic. Maybe I’ll watch Brokeback Mountain to wallow in misery for a bit.

May 11th - Hakone
Our first full-day excursion took us to Hakone. After thoroughly stressing Akane out (sorry, Akane!), we finally boarded the RomanceCar train thingy. I sat with Aruba on the way there, but unfortunately our time together was cut short by my lack of sleep. Even more unfortunately, my nap was interrupted by the bipolar AC that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be freezing or sweltering. Still, I managed some form of sleep, so I’ll take it. Once we got to Hakone, we broke for lunch. Aidan, Gui, Aruba, and Emily tried to sneak off and avoid the chaos of finding a restaurant with enough seats, but funnily enough, the whole class ended up following them to eat. Meanwhile, Alex, Xan, and I opted for paos. Each flavor had a distinct taste. I got four chicken ones, and Alex let me try one of her shrimp ones, they were super flavorful and really fun to eat because we got little sticks to stab them with. After finishing, we walked past the restaurant crew and knocked on the windows to brag about how we’d already finished eating. Victors’ privilege.
Before officially kicking off the day, I had to get coffee. Finally found something with caramel in it, bless. The sugar addict in me was starting to get withdrawals. But then we started heading up the mountains, and that’s when things got tricky. Thanks to my lung issues, the hike was way harder than I expected. Thankfully, Alex and I formed a little “cripple group” and trudged up and down together. Her knees and my lungs made us a pretty solid duo. On the train ride up, we talked the whole time, completely oblivious that this was actually part of the excursion and not just transportation. It had stunning, absolutely gorgeous views, and I’m pretty sure I was the only one who spotted the tiniest patch of wisteria. My phone was dead for the first half of the day, so I went through Emily’s and Gui’s basically-dead chargers until Alex’s finally did the trick. Gui and Alex even let me use their phones for pictures in the meantime, which was so sweet.
After our scenic journey up the mountain, we finally reached the main destination, the volcanic area of Mt. Hakone (cannot remember the exact name). We took the gondola up (which was super cool), and I got my first-ever view of Mt. Fuji! But that’s also when my lungs really started feeling the altitude. Still, everyone on the trip was so kind and checked in on me regularly, so it almost felt like a good thing. We took some photos with Mt. Fuji in the background. Gui finally got to use his new film camera, and even let me take a piece of film! Before we left, we tried the famous hard-boiled eggs cooked in the sulfuric springs. Some people were unimpressed, calling it “just an egg” or even worse than a normal one. But I thought it was the best good ol’ fashioned boiled egg I’ve ever had! It felt full of nutrients and very… moist? I unfortunately do not have a better word.
I thought I’d feel relieved to come down from the volcano, but the rapid altitude changes weren’t any kinder to my lungs. The pirate ship, though? Absolutely insane, took whatever breath I had left away. It even gave me a chance to nerd out a little over my minor high school obsession with Japanese piracy. Still, my lungs needed rest, so the “cripple group” took a squat on the top staircase. The rest of our lovely group ended up hanging out with us there instead of by the railing, which honestly says a lot about how much we enjoy each other’s company. The wind on the ship helped my lungs a lot, enough that I was no longer worried about an asthma attack. The entire day I was blown away by how beautiful the area was, and the other side of Lake Ashi didn’t disappoint either. We made our way to a shrine covered in dragons—the nine-headed dragon fountain was especially cool. I didn’t manage to get a blessing or an amulet, but I did get to say two much-needed prayers.
The walk back to the bus was rushed, but the cedar forest we passed through was breathtaking. The open air helped my lungs recover a bit… though the sprint to the bus undid most of that. I hobbled the rest of the way down, sharing AirPods with Gui, he’s too frugal for Spotify Premium, and I’m too prissy for ads. I swore up and down that I was going to nap on the two-hour ride back, but instead, Alex and I ended up talking the entire time. Honestly, I don’t think sacrificing sleep for bonding on this trip will ever feel like a mistake. Our time here is so limited, and the start of the second week really reminded me of that. I’ve officially banned Anh from doing countdowns until the final week starts.
Once the excursion officially ended, we found ourselves trapped in the labyrinth that is Shinjuku Station for a good 30 minutes. Three different groups were running around trying to find an exit, until Akane and Professor Smith admitted their little mix-up. After our great escape, we grabbed Subway. Alex, Gui, and I all got the avocado chicken sandwich (elite choice), while Will.I.Am got… something else? No memory of what it was, but he seemed happy with it. Then came the highlight of our night: the JJK KFC. While I’ve only seen the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, I still had a blast helping Gui and Will.I.Am recreate “the breakup” scene, an Oscar-worthy ordeal. Our final stop was the Godzilla head, which felt like the perfect dramatic end to a wonderfully chaotic day. Then it was back to the hotel for a much-needed soak in the onsen. Easily one of my favorite days so far. I always feel like the rough parts (the altitude, the mix-ups, the lung stuff) just make the good parts feel that much sweeter.
Academic reflection
After traveling by ship to the other side of Lake Ashi, Vaporis’s reading on the Edo period checkpoints came to life at the Hakone Sekisho (Edo-Kyoto barrier). The historic site offered a much-needed break from walking, but more than that, it gave a genuine depth to the reading. Honestly, I wish we’d had more time to fully absorb everything. Without the reading, the barricade would’ve seemed inconspicuous (aside from the Torimono sandugo), and without the barricade, the reading would’ve lacked context. Seeing it in person showed how different everything looked and functioned from what I’d imagined, especially the watchtower overlooking the water, which was positioned nothing like I’d pictured.
My favorite part was seeing the roles and hierarchies come to life, the guards, officials, and checkpoints weren’t just abstract figures from the page. I did get the feeling that the barriers were more performative assertions of state control that Vaporis discussed rather than hardcore security measures. Still, the presence of the Torimono sandugo and very formal procedures made the threat feel real. The display of the three main weapons used, particularly the Sasumata, made it easy to understand why most people compiled without resistance. Those things were terrifying.
One fact that stuck with me from class was that you could carry severed heads through the barrier—but not corpses. That’s definitely the kind of detail you don’t forget, and honestly, it just adds to the growing list of reasons I, too, would’ve preferred staying put rather than traveling under the Tokugawa system. Overall, seeing the checkpoint in person helped me appreciate how much control the Tokugawa state maintained over even the smallest details of people’s lives. The reading gave the context, but the site gave it meaning. It’s one thing to read about surveillance and control, it’s another thing to stand where people had to line up, show paperwork, and hope they weren’t in the wrong. This experience honestly made me gain a deeper understanding of the caution around individuality that still persists in Japan.

any recommendations for books or movies?
not asking for favourites, as that's a reeeeally hard one
omgggg i’m not much of a reader honestly but i am a huge film nerd LOL i tend to gravitate to movies about sex and/or violence i fear so keep that in mind with all of these recommendations
some movies that have been on my mind lately are exotica (1994, dir. atom egoyan), o fantasma (2000, dir. joão pedro rodrigues), sauvage (2018, dir. camille vidal-naquet), belle de jour (1967, dir. luis buñuel), the in crowd (2000, dir. mary lambert), frisk (1995, dir. todd verow), variety (1983, dir. bette gordon), and andrea arnold’s entire filmography (but especially fish tank, american honey, and red road)
i know who killed me (2007, dir. chris sivertson) is a misunderstood 2000s horror masterpiece - it’s basically american giallo (lindsay lohan is also the star of it btw)
open cam (2005, dir. robert gatson) is more of a niche pick but i think it’s really underrated and actually quite good - it’s a low-budget horror/thriller about gay cam boys

Omg y’all, I have to share these comments from one of my professors T^T
Context: I’m taking public speaking this semester to satisfy one of my gen ed requirements, but it’s an online class so we have to just film stuff (which I hate and should’ve thought about before signing up lmao. I’m fine with public speaking, less fine with having to see myself). But we had a presentation where we had to talk about a show or movie or book we like, and I picked Star Trek and wanted to talk about its cultural influence. The parameters were to talk for 3-4 minutes with a 30 second grace on either side (so 2.5 minutes to 4.5 minutes technically), and points deducted for every 30 seconds over or under the grace.
Well I cannot help myself. It’s Star Trek. So after a ton of takes, my final was still a little under 5 minutes, and I didn’t even hit on all my points from my outline. Also on the last take, one of my cats decided to hop up behind me and try to eat my hair, but I was so done that I just let it happen and said fuck it and turned it in that way because I was on a roll and didn’t want to film ANOTHER take.
So far this professor has only really given “great job!” and “nice presentation!” as feedback on my grades so far, but for this presentation she gave me this:

I lost points for being over but she gave me extra credit back basically for just being a big damn nerd. Sadly I’m not a Communication & Journalism major, but this just made me feel good T^T
#i just can’t with the ‘to you and your cat’#Spyderz will LLAP too i assure you#after she’s finished eating my hair#(yes i started the presentation with ‘space: the final frontier’)#(and yes i have done probably about a dozen or so school assignments about ST from high school on)#(and yes there will be more i’m sure)

Honestly, it never struck me until now exactly how disproportionately Max’s revenge was given to the Nerds, some of which wasn’t exactly his own fault, and how it shows that he really is the one to decide who counts as a Nerd and who doesn’t. I don’t think Max as a character did it this way intentionally, but there is some thematic consistency in terms of the “consequences” the gang gets as part of his vendetta. I’m also not talking about MENTAL consequences, cus all these kids are gonna be messed up lol. I’m only talking about physical consequences.
The one who Max gives his big theatrical Villain song to? The one who gets the longest and most brutal death? It’s Richie, arguably the one of the main five who was the least involved with Max’s death. He certainly played his part, but his role was the most detached; he was just supposed to film Max, and he wasn’t even one of the ones scaring him. And he gets the big dramatic initial confrontation and the longest, cruelest death (multiple lacerations, removing his nipples, and only dying by swirly).
Then we get Ruth as the second death. Ruth was less involved, but arguably more “guilty” then Richie was; she was the skele’on which Max was terrified of AND she removed Max’s nipples post death, basically defiling his body in an unnecessary way. Hers was a pretty gruesome death, but hers was MUCH quicker than Richie’s was, only lasting a few minutes at most.
Steph and Peter are both arguably much more guilty in terms of the plan; Peter was not only a chief scarer but dressed specifically as a ghost, which Max is genuinely terrified of the most, while Steph was the one to outright betray Max’s trust and lead him to the house to begin with; theoretically, if she hadn’t joined in, the plan would have fell through.
However, out of the two, who gets an actual physical consequence for their part? Peter, who gets a broken arm. Steph remains physically unscathed. While Max intended to mess them up, ultimately, he decides that hooking up with Grace took precedent over killing them, thus making it clear that his revenge is something he can pull himself away from.
And finally, we get Grace, who is not only the one who orchestrated the entire plan, decided to bury his body in the house and leave him to rot, but who has the WEAKEST reason to hate him. She is arguably the only person in the entire school who doesn’t actually fear Max (whether this is because Max is slightly nicer around her and lets her get away with it, or that Grace has just always been bonkers and has no fear naturally is unclear), and doesn’t even want to kill him for his unwarranted sexual comments, but purely blaming him for her own sexual attraction to him, something that , for once, is genuinely not his fault.
And what does she get? No revenge at all, but also a few benefits; she gets the Black Book, hooks up with a guy she was genuinely sexually attracted to, AND defeats Max in one fell swoop. Grace, at least physically, comes out of the whole mess surprisingly in tact, despite being the literal textbook definition of a Nerdy Prude… but Max made an exception for her because he’s the one who decides whose cool and who isn’t.

Halloooooo
Another theory brewing…
So I’m writing my document and have done analysis of a lot of what we’ve been given. The posters today, brilliant, trailers and teasers and clips, brilliant, Agatha pretending she doesn’t care when she actively needs these people, a mood.
But I came across a fun little easter egg that may help understand later parts of the show AKA what I am calling ‘The Wicked Scene’ AKA Lilia’s trial.
(I have spent an hour looking at pixels and it spells out the most basic plot but I'm sharing it because I'm proud of myself so be nice)
In this scene in the Coven Roundup teaser, we see a new second of her trial:

So clearly this is a card reading. I will show my thoughts of what each card are and a short explanation (that I copied from the internet so I’m sorry if they are slightly wrong):
Top Right: Page of Swords. Upright: Caution and Weariness. Reversed: acting hastily, deep mistrust based on the past
Top Left: The World. Upright: Success, achievement. Reversed: close to completion but are stuck
Middle: Ten of Swords. Upright: Extreme situation, violence, destruction that comes with an ending. Reversed: denial, going down a painful and wrong road but leading to no definite ending
Bottom Right: The Hanged Man. Upright: rite of passage through mediation and sacrifice. Reversed: not letting go, getting stuck
Bottom left: Wheel of Fortune. Upright: Changes ahead, good luck, advancing. Reversed: luck turns for the worst

So we know that this scene is already deadly. And I swear to fucking god if Lilia dies-
Now it’s important to note some are upside down. But this depends on who’s seeing them. If it’s the chair with the sword in or the opposite. And there is one out of frame and one below the Ten of Swords. But it is clearly describing that this is most likely the 6th or 7th episode. I’m under the belief that each episode is dedicated to a big trial that is dedicated to a person so surely the last three will go Rio, Billy then Agatha? But this does seem to be an end one. Maybe they are going more on story. Or maybe it isn’t one trial per episode. But this is spelling out:
This situation is one of the most dangerous, they will need luck and critical thinking to get out of it, good luck is either there or not, and in the end they will need a lot of caution and care to get what they want. And I think this is mainly directed at Lilia (since it’s her trial) but also Agatha because I think there will be a lot of twists in the end… don't know what haha but I feel there will be!
And I am such a nerd I ended it with ‘And that’s just a theory……. A FILM THEO-’ I need psychological help my god. Or a girlfriend to rant about this too. Both help

Can you tell I’m writing this at 00:37 at night!
Anyway, like I said… pretty normal stuff for a show but I spent an hour doing this and looking up the meanings so I wanted to share! Have a good evening
Ps my document is at 74 pages... This is getting insane. I also may make a post adding onto trickofthelights tarot card deck because you helped me a lot in my analysis so thank you 🙏 and that took me 4 hours and I don't want it to go to waste. Took me 30 minutes to find what a Quatrefoil was called…
#agatha all along#this took way too long for how boring it is#agatha harkness#how have we gotten so much as soon as I go into my batcave away from crazy people#CRAZY PEOPLE STAY BACK#🤺🤺🤺#you shippers are fucking terrifying my god#anyway I'm gonna stick in my corner filled with my love for Agatha and me trying to logic my way through this show#have fun out there#more later#maybe#if I have time#i also changed my avatar#because I cannot stop laughing at this fucking photo
