I have always liked the idea of the school for mutants being very literally a school, and I know yes it is but I mean in the sense of if you want to be an X-men, you have to be a teacher. They have exams at the end of years, they have Ofsted checks (for those who don’t know what they are, it’s essentially people coming to check that the school is good at being a school) and they have teachers for every subject, which brings me to my next point;
“I’m Right You’re Wrong, Here’s What The X-Men (‘97 specifically) Would Teach As Subjects”.
(Also this is based off of UK school system but I use American terms like “seniors” and “AP” and “Midterms”)
Maths Teacher Gambit is surprising, for a guy most assume to not being entirely smart, an idiot goof off who’s the comedic relief. But you need to know numbers to gamble, and that he does with being very well versed in mathematics way past an AP level. He’s made the promise for every senior class that he will teach them to play blackjack on the final day, and has only ever lost once. Which is when the rule of “no betting real money” came into place.
English teacher Jean reminds me of the kind of teacher who would let the social outcasts into her class for their lunch breaks. The kids more likely to be bullied and she will fight tooth and nail to make sure those kids bullies don’t come into that classroom. they’re loud and shout and shouldn’t really be in there but no one has to know and she certainly won’t be telling them to leave any time soon.
Physics teacher Magneto is very specific to my highschool experience I’ll be honest. I had a physics teacher who was an actual Dr with a PHD and he hated being there. His classroom has (well, had since the building was knocked down about 5 years ago now) this one cabinet that was never fully shut, it was always open just about an inch or two, and he’d stand with his foot hovering just above it and then slam down on it whenever we got too loud so the noise would shut us up. That’s very magneto coded. Erik Lehnsherr would purposefully make the cabinet always a little open so he can do that.
Biology teacher morph is just a funny concept, a person whose physical form and change and morph into just about anything. They are considered one of the “fun” teachers, you could easily convince them to let you watch a movie all class as long as it was biology centred, but with classics like Osmosis Jones, you’re not stuck watching a documentary about animals giving birth.
Chemistry teacher Storm does not fuck about with children’s education. She is not strict by any means whatsoever, she just will not bend to someone saying they want to watch a film or should do a practical instead of theory. She has a set curriculum. She knows what she will be doing by the first week of the summer holidays and already has the room set up all pretty and organised.
Geography teacher Scott has the unfortunate job of telling his students that, they just won’t be looking at memorising country flags and politics. But hey!! Rocks are cool!! Beach shores are cool! Lake formations are cool! He’s the vice principal and designated nerd teacher. He once beat the elite four for a student on their copy of Pokémon Red because the student promised they’d do well in their midterms. Yes, he was in his 30s when the game came out, he doesn’t care.
History teacher Logan is a walking fun facts book. He’s exhausted, goes on smoke breaks on every gap of time he has, dislikes his job and will randomly get passionate about one specific topic, and will then dedicate his next 4 classes to that topic. Having been through a lot of modern history with personal experiences, he’s able to bring a lot of souvenirs to show his classes. Bullets, helmets, clothes he once wore hundreds of years ago, his personal memories of basic inventions like the vaccine.
PE (physical education) teacher Rogue is full of fun sports games, you can join any kind of sports team you can imagine and if you ask nicely enough, she’ll put Just Dance on a projector in the sports hall so you can just play that instead of actually play an actual sport. As long as you leave her class exhausted and without time to have a shower before your next class then she’s succeeded in making whoever your next teacher is absolutely miserable (bonus points if it’s Logan with his enhanced sense of smell).
Art teacher jubilee does believe that there is a right way to critique art. And she can be a little in your face about it. She does think you can have wrong opinions especially when it comes to your own art. If she overhears you saying you didn’t something wrong, she’ll scream into a megaphone “adapt, improvise, overcome!”. There are no mistakes! She’s eccentric, bubbly, creative and brilliant, the only one suited for the job.
It wouldn’t be a school without budget cuts. That’s why Nightcrawler is both the languages and religions teacher and he’s beloved at both. He comes up with roleplay scenarios the students can play to help learn their chosen languages, he has varied religious texts in his room and when he says to the students “I’ll pray for toy during exam season” he’s not actually joking.
(I forgot about Hank I’m actually going to cry he’s one of my favourites and I forgot about him. He’ll be in pt two or smth.)

I tried to answer this succinctly, but it turned into an essay. (Sorry.)
The Princess and the Frog was not accurate, strictly speaking, but dinging it for that would be like criticizing the Lion King for not being a realistic wildlife documentary. Accuracy wasn't really the point. Given the fantastical elements and fictional nations like “Maldonia”, I suppose we're meant to understand this as a bit removed from the real New Orleans. It's more a a jazz-flavored fairy tale than a historical fiction.
But for discussion's sake....
Is it fashion-accurate to its 1926 timeframe? Ehhh, sort of. It pays homage to 20s fashion trends with cloche hats, furs and feathery headpieces, but without fully committing to it. The waistline on almost all of Tiana's clothing is too high for the 20s, and the the shapes of her fancier costumes take a lot of liberties, or deviate wildly from the style of the period.
In the 20s, dresses (including workaday stuff) tended to have a straight up-and-down shape to it - kind of a low-waisted rectangle that de-emphasized curves instead of highlighting them. There are valid reasons to play fast and loose with that, though (something I’m definitely guilty of as well). One of those reasons is communication.
For instance, speculatively, the filmmakers wrote Tiana as a hard-working waitress and wanted her to look the part, so they made the choice to clothe her in something familiar - that gingham dress of mid-century shape that we broadly associate with diner waitresses. Actual waitress uniforms of the 20s had a fair bit of overlap with maid uniforms at the time too, and I can see why they wouldn't want to risk the confusion. It's more important to communicate clearly with the larger audience than to appease a small faction of fashion nerds who'd notice or care about the precision.
I don't think it's a case of the designers failing to do their research - I'm sure they had piles of references, and maybe even consultants - but they also had to have priorities.
With her hat and coat on, she looks a lot more 1920s-shaped.
Pretty consistently, the indication of the characteristic 1920s drop waist is there, but the approach otherwise ignores the 20s silhouette. The clothes hug the body too much. This may be about appealing to a 2000s audience, visually speaking, but also could be an animation thing. Maybe both. For practical reasons, clothes in 2d animation are usually more a sort of second skin than something that wears or behaves like realistic fabric.
These are not in the 1920s ballpark at all. Tiana's blue gown looks like your basic Disney brand invention. Strapless things would have been extremely unusual and the overall shape is far out of step. Excusable, I guess, because it's a costume in context. Charlotte looks like she’s heading for a mimosa brunch in a modern maxi dress.
Charlotte's princess dress did seem to be calling back to the ultra-wide pannier side hoops of the 18th century - something that made a reappearance for part of the 20s, albeit in much milder form called robe de style. I'm not sure if the filmmakers were alluding to that at all, really, but either way, her dress is hilarious.
They only went about halfway with the cloche hats. The 1920s cloche really encapsulated the cranium, almost entirely covered bobbed hair, and obscured much of the face from certain angles, so it's easy to see why they've been somewhat reined in for the film. Still, it ends up looking more 1930s, where the hats started to recede away from the face, evolving in the direction of the pillbox.
Similarly, Tiana's hair is not very reminiscent of the bobbed, close-to-the-cranium style of the period, but I think that could legitimately be written off as characterization. She's not at all the type of person who'd fuss about going à la mode. Not everyone bobbed and finger-waved their hair.
The clothes Prince Naveen is introduced in are very 1920s collegiate in spirit - the wide-leg oxford bags, the sleeveless pullover sweater, the flat cap, and high, stiff collar. The ukulele and banjolele were pretty trendy instruments at the time too.
Definitely some Josephine Baker vibes here. Also, the look of this whole fantasy sequence was reportedly inspired by the works of Aaron Douglas, a luminary painter of the Harlem Renaissance known for his depictions of the lives of African-Americans. (The mural is in Topeka, Kansas.)
They pretty much nailed the Art Deco. It's gorgeous. Looks somewhat inspired by the interiors of some of the Ralph Walker-designed NYC architecture, plus some French Quarter balcony flair for the final manifestation of Tiana's Place. Her dress here does resemble some gauzy mid-1920s looks, too.
------------------------------------------------
Culturally speaking...
New Orleans is an unusual place. Because some of the colonial Spanish and French laws and conventions that New Orleans evolved under persisted even after its inception into the United States; because it was such a heterogeneous hub of indigenous and immigrant peoples; and because it had a considerable population of free people of color (mostly Creole), it did not function quite like the rest of the South leading up to the Civil War, nor for a while after. Its particular coalescence of cultures made it its own unique sort of culture within the country, within the region, within the state of Louisiana even. By the early 20th century, though, regardless of the not-very-binary nature of New Orleans, Jim Crow laws were enforcing a literal black-and-white distinction, and not an evenhanded one, by far. In that aspect, the city had begun to resemble the rest of the South.
The film nods at the wealth disparity, but goes on to paint a pretty rosy picture of race and class relations at the time. Still it's not unbelievable that some people were exceptions to the rules. You could probably find a few compartments of old New Orleans society that resisted segregation or certain prejudicial norms, preferring to do things their own way. That aside, the film wasn't trying to confront these topics. Not every piece of media should have to. Sometimes breaking away from miserable period piece stereotypes is refreshing. I'm not sure it could have handled that meaningfully given the running time, narrow story focus, and intended audience, anyhow. (But you could perhaps also make a case that family films habitually underestimate younger audiences in this way.)
------------------------------------------------
Raymond the firefly I guess is the film's Cajun representation. There's not much to say about it, except perhaps to note that Evangeline is a reference to the heroine of a Longfellow poem of the same name. The poem is an epic romance set during the expulsion of the Acadians from the eastern provinces of Canada and the northernmost reaches of the American colonies (now Maine) by the British in the mid-1700s. Many exiled Acadians gradually migrated south to francophone-friendly Louisiana, settling into the prairies and bayous, where 'Acadian' truncated into the pronunciation 'Cajun'. Evangeline - who is only finally reunited with her love when he’s on his deathbed - has become an emblem of the heartbreak, separation and faithful hope of that cultural history, and there are parishes, statues and other landmarks named after the her throughout Louisiana.
------------------------------------------------
Voodoo does have a very historical presence in New Orleans, having arrived both directly from West Africa and by way of the Haitian diaspora (where it would more properly be called Vodou). While I don't think Disney's treatment of it was especially sensitive or serious, it also wasn't the grotesquely off-base sort of thing that media of the past has been known to do. It was largely whittled down to a magical plot component, but it wasn't so fully repurposed that it didn't resemble Voodoo at all either - and that's mostly owing to the characters, because it does appear the writers pulled from history there.
It’s apparently widely held that Dr. Facilier is a Baron Samedi caricature - and likely that's true, in part - but I have the impression he's also influenced by Doctor John. Not the 20th century funk musician, but the antebellum “Voodoo King” of New Orleans. Doctor John (also called Bayou John, Jean La Ficelle, and other aliases) claimed to be a Senegalese prince. He became well known as a potion man and romance-focused prognosticator to people from all corners of society. Though highly celebrated and financially successful at his peak, he seems ultimately remembered as an exploitative villain.
To my recollection, the film sort of gingerly avoids referring to Facilier as a Voodoo practitioner directly (I think he's more generically called a witch doctor in the script?) but it does seem to imply his 'friends on the other side' are a consortium of loa. It's mostly abbreviated into nebulously evil-seeming special FX, glazing over any specificity or dimensionality, but it does also loop back around as a vehicle of moral justice. Loa are all very individualistic and multi-faceted, but they do have reciprocal rules for asking favors of them.
There's also the benevolent counterpart in Mama Odie's character. Her wearing ritual whites has a definite basis in Voodoo/Vodou practice, and her depiction as a fairy godmother-like figure isn't entirely out of step with how a mambo may have been perceived...in a very general sense. They were/are ceremonial leaders and community bastions who people would seek out for help, advice and spiritual guidance. More than just emanating matronly good vibes, though, some have wielded considerable political and economic power.
(Just my opinions here. I've done a lot of reading on the subject for research but I'm no authority with any special insider understanding of Voodoo, and I really shouldn't be relied upon as an arbiter of who has or hasn't done it justice in fiction.)
------------------------------------------------
In summary--
Culturally, I think the film is respectably informed but paints a superficially genteel picture. The set pieces are gorgeous, but the story mostly delivers a sort of veneer of New Orleanishness. And as for fashion, well, it’s the 1920s run through a Disney filter. It’s very pretty, but it’s only as proximally accurate as seemed practical.
I don’t know that any of that really matters so much as whether or not it achieved what it intended, though. As a charming yarn and as a tribute to New Orleans and the Jazz age, I think it’s mostly successful. It’s also really beautifully animated!

every time I remember that the hit show supernatural made God, the literal God from the Bible, canonically bisexual but couldn’t do the same with a random guy who hunts monsters it actually makes me feel physically ill.. like blasphemy is okay but we draw the line at making the main character a little bit queer because it would “upset the heterosexuals men”? okay ig… and it’s so funny to me that they tried SO bad to make dean like really really straight and macho and a manly womanizer (I mean dude has literal porn brain and is obsessed with cars and is a film nerd) And still is the number 1 bissexual boy.. I mean no one that into cowboys is 100% straight 🙄 and if they actually wanted him to be that much of a cishet guy WHY would they make him have a codependent homosexual friendship with his best friend for more than a decade ?? and we have so much subtext to corroborates it that it’s actually insane.
and it’s also rlly funny to me that sam would be the most obvious choice for a queer storyline. like i’m not sure this is true but i heard somewhere that he actually was supposed to like be lgbt and that it’s implied in the show he’s pan bc he basically have sex w/ everyone and doesn’t care (like monsters and stuff). i wholeheartedly disagree bc sure he hited a demon and a werewolf and a kitsune and God knows what more But it still were just women and for me he’s still just straight 💀 we do have gabriel however and i would say that’s a valid argument but i don’t actually like them together because of the whole torturing-sam-every-tuesday-over-and-over-again but it’s still a good take ig. again this is just my opinion But anyways doesn’t matter my point Is that sam always felt like a freak and wanted to be normal and like was more open minded and “less-macho-toxic-behavior” than dean. he was a theater kid and talked about his feelings and all. STILL THO dean went and become The bissexual icon (Not Sam, Dean!!). and the fact that he was more manly actually only emphasized to his sexuality (and him being closeted) and sam being the straight one, and bare with me here. as sam winchester once wisely said “well you are kind of butch they probably think you're compinsating.” (to dean asking why people always assumed they were gay) and like this is so true, sam always felt comfortable in himself and like his nerdier and less cool strong man personality. But dean, oh, dean, no, no, no. and it could all be linked to john. we know how much dean wanted to gain his father approval and respect, all he ever wanted was for john to be proud of him. so he’d listen to the same music as john, same clothes… and so on. but when we really see a glance of him, we realize he’s actually much more “““girly””” (sorry for the term i lacked a better one) than he shows, Especially when compared to sam—who’s supposed to be the more girly one (again sorry for the term lol) or whatever. dean canonically likes taylor swift, chick flick films, actually liked when a woman made him wear underwear, the bailarinas shoe were “speaking to him” in that one ep of cursed objects, and so on. and every time he makes fun of sam for doing something not-manly-enough (like drinking lemon water or drinking from tiny coups) he eventually goes and do the same thing 😭 and i’m 100% sure that the writers just thought “haha funny scene this really straight deadly man does something not so convencional/more feminine(?) haha comedy relief time!!” but it actually just made him have a whole perfect queer background developed in the series. specially with the fact that He Does Overcompensate. why is he always flirting with women, why is he so butch and scary, always talking about straight sex and so on? because he’s really just deep in the closet. and it makes so much sense with john being his father, with him having to hunt two lesbians nuns in his 17 bday, always having to be strong and macho and cool and perfect—and therefore straight. even without cas, dean really does immaculate the bissexual experience and i’m so sorry but this is just true.
and now pointing to the subtext that i mentioned in the first paragraph (lol i can’t believe i’m making a whole rant as to why dean winchester is a confirmed bisexual), that whole confession to that priest where he says he wants experience new feelings, new people, FOR THE FIRST TIME. that always that the show mentioned a gay couple it ALWAYS focused on dean—not sam, DEAN. the gay hunters, the gay couple on the bar that the cupid “made”, the two cosplayers partners… the fact that every time that dean liked something it was borderline fangirl (gay) obsessive (the dr. sexy episode, that wrestler fighter). he Had a gay thing—and was all flustered about it. he flirted with a guy throughout charlie. THE MALE SIREN. the male siren like after that ep i was 100% convinced that man was not straight. he had a hot demon sumer with crowley?!!! and it’s so funny to me that not one of these things involves castiel, so if they really wanted to make dean be that straight why would they do that?? and only to dean, not even once to sam. Like. and not to mention all the homoeretic tension with benny??? sam never had a male best friend like that.. all of that and i didn’t even entered on destiel. Because this then really just confirms that he is Not straight. even if he wasn’t In Love with cas, they had something going on and the fact that if cas was a girl it would 100% be canon and filmed and Everyone would ship—and I really mean everyone—it just makes me go fucking insane. they could’ve had it all. the fanfic episodes, the parallels between dean and cas and “real couples”, ruby and cas duality and the fact that sam indeed had a relationship w/ her. Anyway i’m a # bi dean truth believer and i know this bc same boy # happy pride month to my fav bissexual boy in the whole world
also to anyone that says that “destiel” was unrequited love yes it kinda of was but only bc dean was so deep in the closet, he did love cas. he was indeed a bissexual man. i’ll die on that hill.
#dean winchester#spn#supernatural#deancas#destiel#castiel#bi dean winchester#rant abou queer dean#it’s clear text#he’s literally a homossexual man

Alright, Tif's live recap part 2...
-they confirmed none of L's other friends were there that they saw
-They said body language (when they've seen them and also in pics) between L and A is "nonexistent." They said their interactions with him had more chemistry than what they saw (lol)
-Said there is no comparison to how he behaves with N and their chemistry. They said it's easy to stay on the ship because the way L is in person with N vs A is so insanely different.
-Compared A to Nadia in the Tomdaya situation
-Tif doesn’t like A, but she gives space for the idea she could be great and he could be really happy (respectful queen lol)
-Thinks things will change once season 4 is filming. They said his longterm/loving relationship with J couldn't make it through season 3 and season 4 will be worse cause they're going to be acting married and in love the whole time. Tif said if she makes it through maybe she's the one and then Maria said or she cares more about the attention (lmao)
-Reiterated we shouldn't follow, like or comment on A's page cause it's what she wants. Fandom is worried she'll go private like J did, but there is no way based on who she is
-Said L liking A from his public page is very purposeful and is basically him claiming her publicly
-Reiterated how unbelievably kind and sweet and shy L is in person. Said he is always kind, but previously had been painfully shy in person (TSOT, Paris in Jan). They think the press tour helped him be more comfortable interacting with fans
-They also think his glow up has changed him and he isn't the cute nerd he used to be (💔), but he also has gotten more confident because of it
-A has started blocking lots of people from her account. They also brought up her deleting comments and posting at the same time as N. Tif was trying to be generous and reasonable about this, but it's clear her reserved opinion of A is headed downhill
-Fan account came in and was blocked, then started making drama on their page about it
When asked about the polaroid she said she thought it was just changed to one of her friends, but she didn't know. When asked if it maybe was another of Luke she responded:
“if she changed the polaroid and it’s Luke again, I’m buying my dress to the wedding. I don’t give a shit”
So lets all pray that it's L on there again lol
I think that's all the most important stuff. There were a lot of repeat questions in the chat that she seemed to purposefully avoid. She said she got a lot of hate after her last couple of lives, so I think she's being really cautious.
It's a shame she is getting hate from her doing the lives
This fandom can be such trash
Again, appreciate you taking notes for the class anon
💜🥃

To be honest, this is more of me being a musical theatre nerd and kid throughout most of my life. But something I want to say is that Hazbin Hotel was half of the musical Vivziepop and her stans want you to believe, then the show to me wasted the perfect opportunity for a opening number. The worst part to me is that Vivziepop also had the perfect (or atleast really great) reference to do it.
Like, imagine after Charlie tells the story of Adam and Lilith, how Lucifer fell (basically the whole beginning storybook narration.) We cut to a shot where the exorcists are flying away from Hell after another extermination and it pans down to the Pride Ring, which is very much destroyed with some buildings even in flames. Then a different opening number song could start playing as we’re introduced to the Pride Ring and its inhabitants.
If this opening sounds somewhat familiar, then you’ll likely know what the reference I’m talking about is. It’s The Nightmare Before Christmas’s This is Halloween
To people who haven’t seen the film, I’ll give a short rundown on its opening number. Before TNBC opening number begins, we are shown a scene of the different holiday doors before the shot pans into the Halloween door. Cue the opening number, and we are introduced to the background Halloween Town residents and some important characters (Sally, Oogie Boogie, etc)
If Hazbin Hotel took a similar approach to its opening number, it would honestly help most of the problems. We would be introduced to Hell (or at least the Pride Ring) smoothly, side characters who would have major roles later would already be shown to us, we would get a better look at exterminations, essentially most of the character problems would’ve been fixed (or at least toned down)
Also, while I don’t really care about any of the songs, they aren’t exactly the type of musical songs I like/aren’t memorable to me personally. I personally hate how they come out of nowhere. In the first episode, there is literally no transition to Charlie’s song in the slightest. No instrumental build up, nothing. Because no, characters in musicals don’t start singing out of nowhere.

Back with more shit
So, I've seen the "Husk fighting with throwing cards" post lately and I keep thinking about how I always assumed he just had Gambit (Marvel universe)'s powers. Gambit's powers are a bit... Unclear at times, but the general gist should be that he "mentally create, control, and manipulate pure kinetic energy to his desire." Which is usually used as him throwing something and that something fucking explodes.
He shows up in the X-Men films, gambling, and uses regular playing cards to explode basically Wolverine.
What I'm getting at is that I want Husk's weapons to be regular objects, and he chose playing cards and dice because he's gotta commit to the bit at this point and it's too late to go back. But in reality, any projectile would do. He could throw, with his hands, a bullet and it would explode someone's face.
-🐇
Honestly yes!!! This tracks so much! I don’t know too much about Gambit so I’m gonna @ @xxqueenofdragonsxx because they’re a nerd for this stuff.
But yeah from what I’ve seen and the way you described it this totally works! Him being able to put his power into any object but choosing to use them for the *aesthetic*. Also with the fact that we DO see him in the flashback seemingly using the same/similar pack of cards it holds up.
I know some decks of cards that have some kind of metallic fold, so maybe when he had to fight angels they got a thin layer of that in angelic steel, that way it can actually do the angels in.
Imagine playing with them normally and getting a paper cut, rip 😭

bestie please explain what's going on in the witcher fandom because holy shit??! 👀👀
bestie what ISN’T going on in the witcher fandom. (i’m so sorry this got so long and boring i just started typing and did not stop apparently)
once upon a time in september 2018 henry cavill is cast as geralt of rivia in netflix’s adaptation of the witcher. people are generally surprised but pleased, reddit collectively nuts, mainly bc he's a self-professed 'nerd' and has talked about enjoying the witcher games and books previously
season 1 comes out and is generally well received, most of the negativity was just plain old racism and misogyny with people whinging that casting women and people of colour is 'netflix wokery' and 'inaccurate' because the setting is meant to be based on slavic countries. so according to some folks, henry cavill, as a straight white man who did not completely fuck up his role in s1, is basically the second coming of christ
season 2 comes out and is...not generally well received. by many people for many diverse reasons that i am not going into bc we will be here all day. but basically it becomes quite clear from s2 that the show is not an adaptation of the books, it’s more loosely based on the books. anyway the reddit bros start acting as if henry cavill is the show’s one saving grace and that he’s carrying a shitty show along on his back and that without him things would be even worse because there’d be nobody to overrule the showrunner on stuff like this
this intensifies in late october this year when stuff starts going around about the show writers mocking the books
anyway then henry cavill announces that he is leaving the witcher after s3 (filming had already wrapped at this point) and moving on to pastures new. he also announces that liam hemsworth will be playing geralt from s4. memeworthy stuff, the gift of prophecy strikes again. people tend to fall into one of two vibe camps in response: 1. ‘fucking lol’ 2. ‘i wish i was dead’
rumours swirl and the two main schools of thought about why he left are 1. because he was offered £££££££££ to play superman and 2. because he loves the source material so much he couldn’t bear to continue working on the show. these closely align with the two aforementioned vibe camps.
someone made this very reasonable post and i was grateful for it
THEN today a really objectively funny thing happened in that after all that, james gunn has turned around and said ‘actually the superman movie we’re doing is about a younger superman so none for henry cavill bye’
which is just like. icing on the cake of drama and dials everything up to 11 with the ‘i would kill and die for henry cavill’ gang taking this as proof that there were major creative differences between him and the showrunners (?) and the ‘fucking lol’ gang basically eating popcorn
and on that note i’m just leaving this post and this post here without comment
so yeah that’s that on that sorry for the novel <3

[question/positive nerd rant +hc]
first off, I’m absolutely obsessed with your I’m Gonna Make This Place Your Home fanfic!! I love the details you put for the lore/plot and how they have a purpose, and the easter eggs/hc’s from the shows/films😭 I also love reading your notes at the end of the chapters, and every time I get a notification of an update I get so excited!!🖤🖤
one thing I’m very excited +curious to find out is what you have planned for barb’s world tour!! I’m personally hoping/headcannoning branch helps her, I just think it would be interesting to see, and he just shreds his guitar like an absolute legend and he and his sister just bond and have fun [maybe even ignoring his feeling of “this is wrong” as he does it but he loves his big sister too much to say anything]
omg okay back to what I was going to ask, would branch ever hear val’s dad sing? like if he was doing a concert and he went with the gang (+barb and billy too?) cause, y’know, support and he’s still learning about rock music still, and if drag sang “thunderstruck” by AC/DC, would branch like it? i like to think branch would particularly favour/like the guitar chords/riffs and it would effect him (also the energy of the crowd adding to the experience if this was a point he grew used to rock troll crowds)
reason I ask is– maybe it’s a lil silly, but is because as I was listening to this song,, idk,, I just started getting excited thinking of barb, branch, and the rock trolls during the world tour on the angler bus heading close to a tribe location (classical?), and branch doing the honour of getting every amped and getting hyped by playing the guitars chords of “Thunderstruck” while Barb gives a mini speech and then sings the song before they hit the location to get the string
[sorry for weird ask and honestly basically just geeking out ahh]
Thank you so much!
I've mentioned it here but the World Tour arc is going to be completely new and different thanks to Branch's presence. I hope you like what I have planned for it!
I could see Branch liking Thunderstruck! It fits Barb's vibe so he'd like it on that account.

The Pompeii exhibit at the MSI, as with many temporary exhibits there, is split across two galleries. I like how they handled that this time; the first half presents artworks and artifacts recovered from Pompeii, and uses them to teach about ancient Roman life. I studied classical fresco and mosaic arts in grad school, so I got to see some stuff in person that I’d only ever seen before in books. The mosaic of the anchor, for example, has never left Italy before.
The winged-phallus windchime I’d seen before but also not in person, and I was very amused by the fact that it was off in a niche with a warning sign about artifacts of an adult nature. Which was mostly a lot of dicks, and a couple of (I thought) tasteful frescoes of people having sex or looking like they’d like to. I also wrote a paper on the penis as a magical amulet in classical history in grad school, so I was delighted by all the penis amulets I got to see. A hundred years ago you had to Know A Guy At The British Museum to get a look at stuff like this.
The last image comes from the more serious second half of the exhibit, which I have another post queued about, but I thought one of the cooler elements they introduced was the screen showing a gladiatorial fight, with the two smaller screens showing images of the fighters. I love that they basically gave this gladiator a D&D character stat set.
There were some aspects of the exhibit I didn’t love -- some scientific/historic exhibits in the past ten years have made heavy use of video, which I don’t hate intrinsically, but a lot of the time there will be several video exhibits in one room. It’s extremely unpleasant to try and watch one -- or even look at non-video exhibits -- when three separate video narrations are audible at once. I had planned to leave my headphones off, because I’ve realized that I’m rarely in public without my headphones in and that might be contributing to a certain level of alienation, but I had to get them out of my pocket and put them back in because at least I could pump the volume on my playlist and only hear Robbie Williams instead of three separate people pontificating about ancient history.
But overall as a Roman history and an art history nerd I very much enjoyed the exhibit, and I might go again before it closes.
[ID: Four photos; the first shows the entry atrium to the exhibit, a pair of old-fashioned wooden doors above which is a video screen with the title “One Day In Pompeii” waiting to show us an introductory film. Middle left, a mosaic showing an anchor, two swimming men, and two dolphins or whales, is mounted on a wall; middle right is a windchime made of a bronze winged penis-creature with a penis-shaped tail, each of its limbs clutching a chain that holds a small bell. Bottom, a large video screen with two glass panels in front of it; the screen shows a shield and sword in a gladiatorial arena, while the panels show the warrior on the right and his “stats” and name, Murmillo, on the left.]

Omg y’all, I have to share these comments from one of my professors T^T
Context: I’m taking public speaking this semester to satisfy one of my gen ed requirements, but it’s an online class so we have to just film stuff (which I hate and should’ve thought about before signing up lmao. I’m fine with public speaking, less fine with having to see myself). But we had a presentation where we had to talk about a show or movie or book we like, and I picked Star Trek and wanted to talk about its cultural influence. The parameters were to talk for 3-4 minutes with a 30 second grace on either side (so 2.5 minutes to 4.5 minutes technically), and points deducted for every 30 seconds over or under the grace.
Well I cannot help myself. It’s Star Trek. So after a ton of takes, my final was still a little under 5 minutes, and I didn’t even hit on all my points from my outline. Also on the last take, one of my cats decided to hop up behind me and try to eat my hair, but I was so done that I just let it happen and said fuck it and turned it in that way because I was on a roll and didn’t want to film ANOTHER take.
So far this professor has only really given “great job!” and “nice presentation!” as feedback on my grades so far, but for this presentation she gave me this:
I lost points for being over but she gave me extra credit back basically for just being a big damn nerd. Sadly I’m not a Communication & Journalism major, but this just made me feel good T^T
#i just can’t with the ‘to you and your cat’#Spyderz will LLAP too i assure you#after she’s finished eating my hair#(yes i started the presentation with ‘space: the final frontier’)#(and yes i have done probably about a dozen or so school assignments about ST from high school on)#(and yes there will be more i’m sure)

Honestly, it never struck me until now exactly how disproportionately Max’s revenge was given to the Nerds, some of which wasn’t exactly his own fault, and how it shows that he really is the one to decide who counts as a Nerd and who doesn’t. I don’t think Max as a character did it this way intentionally, but there is some thematic consistency in terms of the “consequences” the gang gets as part of his vendetta. I’m also not talking about MENTAL consequences, cus all these kids are gonna be messed up lol. I’m only talking about physical consequences.
The one who Max gives his big theatrical Villain song to? The one who gets the longest and most brutal death? It’s Richie, arguably the one of the main five who was the least involved with Max’s death. He certainly played his part, but his role was the most detached; he was just supposed to film Max, and he wasn’t even one of the ones scaring him. And he gets the big dramatic initial confrontation and the longest, cruelest death (multiple lacerations, removing his nipples, and only dying by swirly).
Then we get Ruth as the second death. Ruth was less involved, but arguably more “guilty” then Richie was; she was the skele’on which Max was terrified of AND she removed Max’s nipples post death, basically defiling his body in an unnecessary way. Hers was a pretty gruesome death, but hers was MUCH quicker than Richie’s was, only lasting a few minutes at most.
Steph and Peter are both arguably much more guilty in terms of the plan; Peter was not only a chief scarer but dressed specifically as a ghost, which Max is genuinely terrified of the most, while Steph was the one to outright betray Max’s trust and lead him to the house to begin with; theoretically, if she hadn’t joined in, the plan would have fell through.
However, out of the two, who gets an actual physical consequence for their part? Peter, who gets a broken arm. Steph remains physically unscathed. While Max intended to mess them up, ultimately, he decides that hooking up with Grace took precedent over killing them, thus making it clear that his revenge is something he can pull himself away from.
And finally, we get Grace, who is not only the one who orchestrated the entire plan, decided to bury his body in the house and leave him to rot, but who has the WEAKEST reason to hate him. She is arguably the only person in the entire school who doesn’t actually fear Max (whether this is because Max is slightly nicer around her and lets her get away with it, or that Grace has just always been bonkers and has no fear naturally is unclear), and doesn’t even want to kill him for his unwarranted sexual comments, but purely blaming him for her own sexual attraction to him, something that , for once, is genuinely not his fault.
And what does she get? No revenge at all, but also a few benefits; she gets the Black Book, hooks up with a guy she was genuinely sexually attracted to, AND defeats Max in one fell swoop. Grace, at least physically, comes out of the whole mess surprisingly in tact, despite being the literal textbook definition of a Nerdy Prude… but Max made an exception for her because he’s the one who decides whose cool and who isn’t.

My dream is that you one day will write boiling rwrb au
Also I need to know all of your thoughts about the film
RED WHITE AND ROYAL BLUE MY BELOVED!!!!
In summary: I absolutely love it and have so many thoughts. But also I don’t see myself writing an obikin au for it. (Not to worry, I speak autocorrect 😉) Read more below the break
I adore rwrb. It’s my new comfort movie. I’ve watched it three times and I read the book after my first viewing.
The first time I watched in I could NOT believe how gay it was. Honestly I am still twirling my hair and kicking my feet that we get to have a rom com that is just SO!gay. I want more! And I’m really hoping that it’s popularity means we’ll get it
*side note for any of my younger followers: this makes me feel so old. But as a teen in the 2000s there wasn’t a lot of queer media readily available and what was definitely wasn’t showing or marketed toward teens. What I was aware of was adult dramas surrounding HIV/AIDS. Glee and Modern Family didn’t come out until I graduated. Stories like this would have been a game changer
Anyways: back to rwrb. I LOVE that it gets to unabashedly be everything that it is. Is it corny as hell? Yes! Is it tropey and over the top? Yes! Does it read like a fanfic? Yes! Is it fantastic that it gets to be all of these things that every!single! hetero romance/romcom gets to be while basically leading a pride parade through everyone’s Amazon Prime account? YES!!!
A short list of my favorite things about rwrb in no particular order:
All the star wars references in the book. They are nerds and they are my kind of people
Get Low is also my drunk jam. Yes I am the target audience. Yes I am ok with this
There’s a female president and vice president (girl power!)
The sex scene might just be the sweetest, most intimate thing I have witnessed with my own two eyes? It was so tender and so real
There was zero attempt made to pretend that they weren’t just copying the royal family and the fact that the movie leaned into it so hard is absolutely hilarious to me.
They’re also a biracial couple and they don’t shy away from Alex’s experiences as the son of an immigrant to the US (the book does more here)
The key stays on during sex, just hanging there bonking him in the face. 10/10. Hilarious. Kills me.
They do not shy away from gay sex happening and the boys are horny for each other. Like, we don’t just see them kiss once. Again, I’m old, but YES!!!!
I’m cutting myself off here but I could very much go on.
As for the possibility of an obikin au: I’m not going to lie, I thought about it. But I don’t think I see that happening from me.
The first reason is mostly how I write obikin. I don’t write same age aus because I can’t personally separate out their age gap and power dynamic from the other aspects of their canon relationship. I just don’t know how to make them work as peers. (Note: nothing against same age aus, I’ve read many that I’ve adored. I just can’t wrap my head around it to make it happen myself).
Secondly, I kind of don’t want to touch it? I realize I’m basically the queen of looking at a movie and thinking YES, but make it obikin! But I just went on a rant about how this movie/story feels special in that 1) it’s already queer and 2) is allowed to unapologetically be itself. And I don’t know that I want to change that
(Would I read a RWRB obikin au? Absolutely)

I watched that Playthrough of MyHouse.WAD, and had too many thoughts about Shrek. Yes, that’s the post
So, I’ll link the playthrough here, so those who haven’t yet and want to can experience this for themselves, but I had specific thoughts relating to Shrek that I thought it might be better to post here for posterity’s sake.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wAo54DHDY0
OK, to nerd out about the freaking Shrek boss for a second, the fact that Shrek is included possibly as a reference to the meme still says so much 20 years after Shrek came out. No, I'm not kidding. Shrek, when released, was a subversive leap forward in a genre prepared for it by the past innovations laid out by former innovators. Though some of the plot is more real than most other animated family films were willing to go, at that time, it still adhered to the basic structure set forward by it's predecessor, with each subsequent sequel and spinoff (3 isn't canon, and I'll die on that hill) building and growing from this basic structure, while still being recognizably Shrek. Also, further adaptations are far more overtly queer (Shrek the Musical) than the original work was in a safe space to be at time of release. Ringing any bells? Also, the fact that, in the mod, it's included, possibly, for the meme points, adds the layer (ogre jokes ahoy) of being a simple idea many know about that one can use to communicate easily and quickly, with much more thought, research, blood, sweat, tears, and further points of exploration put in behind it.

If you feel up to explaining, could I please ask why you ship Tech and Phee?
The flirting and interactions between them seemed so out-of-character for Tech, and like Disney is trying to force a romance just because there always needs to be a romance in a Disney show/film. It also feels as if Disney chose Tech to be the one to have a potential romance because :
1.) The 'awkwardness' of flirting is amusing or considered 'cute' to viewers as if it's 'funny/cute' to watch someone who doesn't understand social cues or needs time to adjust to interactions be thrown for a loop or react in a different way than what is socially expected thus Disney can have more chances to add this 'lightheartedness/humour' when it's really not,
2.) They are trying to follow the same line that they do in most of their films with the one person the team who is considered the 'nerd/geek' to 'get the girl' instead of actually giving any character(s) who would be a better match for the 'girl' thus continuing their line of overused tropes that more so appeal to the masses of heterosexual neurotypical viewers.
I don't mean this as hate or anything, I'm just trying to figure out how those who ship it, see it. I seek to understand, not judge or cause discourse. And have added my opinion one the matter to simply give my viewpoint. I'm not attempting to change or alter your views, just to hear another's perspective on it, if you're willing to give it.
Thank you for reading this and I'm sorry if it bothers you. If it does, feel free to ignore this entirely.
this does actually really bother me, and i wasn’t gonna answer, but i went to sleep annoyed about it last night and woke up annoyed about it still
mostly this bothers me bc it was entirely unsolicited. like if this had been phrased maybe as a “what’s the thing that you like most about tech and phee together?” or “what made you start to ship tech and phee” i’d probably be less annoyed, but, even though you claim to not be trying to change anyone’s mind here and to only understand, this ask is basically you coming to my inbox and saying “this makes no sense. here’s why it doesn't make sense (and why i actually think it’s at least lightly problematic in my point #1, but i’m gonna continue writing as if that doesn't count as causing discourse) and now i want you to defend your position of shipping two entirely fictional characters who have a legitimately canon romance subplot going”
do you see why that would bother me?
like if you don’t like tech and phee together, and don’t like that i like tech and phee together, that’s fine. block the tag (i think i’ve settled on using techphee as their tag for now) or just unfollow me, but like. don’t come into what is basically my house and very passive aggressively ask that i explain and defend the decor i’ve chosen to decorate it with
i don’t really agree with your points either. i don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with adding romance to shows, because people generally like seeing it and it’s a thing a lot of people experience. i thought it was kind of nice here, actually, because i wasn’t expecting it. as far as i remember, the only clone we’ve really seen with a partner is Cut, who was pretty explicitly shown to have a lot of different values than the other clones due to the fact that he deserted from the GAR, and his arc was a lot about the morality of the clones not being given a choice as to who they are, if they can love, if they can do something and live a life outside of the war they were bred for. the war is over now, it makes sense that the clones might start to find partners or people to maybe want to half settle down with, and it’s a good way to reestablish that the clones that have defected from the empire—while in danger bc of their status as traitors—have a greater sense of their own agency and different priorities than they did before the clone wars ended. they have the freedom to maybe try and live a life now, and for a lot of people, there’s a good chance that might constitute having a partner. romance for a clone is a rather revolutionary idea in universe. it’s not something they would have been allowed before
as for tech specifically, i don’t necessarily think it’s out of character for him to start develop some amount of feelings for someone who has been interested in him from the start, who has a decently wide wealth of knowledge given all the artifacts she knows so much about (and what cultures they come from!), and who has a great backstory of being a caring pirate who goes on these adventures at least in part to give items of little monetary value back to the people they have great sentimental value for after they’ve had to become refugees. she also obviously cares about the bad batch, given she brought them all to her hidden slice of paradise despite the fact she knows they’re all very much wanted people who could very easily bring real trouble given the empire is after them, and she obviously likes listening to tech talk and likes his personality when even his brothers have made fun of the way he tends to ramble (like in the bad batch/ rescuing echo arc of the clone wars). and tech doesn’t seem to mind the attention, given the small smiles he sends her way literally the entire pabu episode, even waiting back a bit to talk to her when she went to drop the artifact off when the rest of the batch had moved forward. at the very least, he seems intrigued by her (as he should be!!!! she’s cool and interesting as hell!!!!)
their interactions are rather soft and sweet, i think. phee’s flirting, sure, and she’s been pretty obvious about it from the get go, but she’s not bulldozing past any boundaries here. their interactions in this episode, especially, made it seem like they’re just in some beginning stages, but they genuinely seem to be pretty comfortable in each other’s company, given the two of them stuck together while making rounds, or their interactions at shep’s dinner table. it’s soft, it’s sweet, it’s slow, but tech’s small smiles whenever she flirts with him are showing that he does understand these particular social cues when she flirts with him, and he’s reciprocating to a degree. perhaps their first interactions aside, i don’t think tech really was ever unaware that she was flirting, it was more just surprise she was flirting with him
which brings me to your #2 point. if there was gonna be a romance subplot (which, again, i wasn’t expecting, just due to the nature of the stories of the clones), i 100% didn’t think it was going to be with tech. there are a decent amount of tech girlies, sure, and some fans find him attractive, but i absolutely would have expected that subplot to go to hunter for lots of reasons, including that he’s the most conventionally attractive and classically handsome of the bad batch with the long hair and the tall dark and handsome thing going, he’s generally the leader of the batch and the leader is usually the one that gets the girl, and he’s the most generally accepted “dad” figure to omega (while the others are more much older brother/uncle types) which means a romance subplot would have also given omega another parental figure which is a very common trope (single dad meets perfect step mom kind of thing). i’ve seen others express this same opinion since the episode aired (surprise at tech getting to have the romance rather than hunter). i also don’t know who you think of the batch is the “better match” for phee, bc i don’t think any of them would match better than tech. both of them are very passionate people with an obvious thirst for knowledge. wrecker’s great, but i don’t see a match there at all, and i don’t think hunter’s personality lends itself to a romance with phee specifically, because they don't really seem to have any common interests there and phee doesn't seem interested in being a parental figure to omega but more of a cool aunt type, even if i think his personality would lend itself to a romance if that was something he personally wanted.
tldr: i like the romance subplot here specifically bc it is more than just a typical thrown in thing like it would be for every other show because this show is about clones in a post clone war galaxy, i think tech and phee are actually fairly well matched, and i don’t really appreciate someone coming into my ask box to tell me that the (canon!!!) ship i found cute is bad and out of character, actually, under the guise of wanting to understand my viewpoint
#like just block the tag. it isn’t that deep.#mak rants#ask#anonymous#star wars#the bad batch#techphee#tech#phee genoa
