[flufftober day 11, wc: 1.4k] - murder mystery dinner : WWIB

“OH MY GOD!” someone screams, frozen in shock when the body turned over is revealed to be none other than y/n, the host of the whole dinner party. she’s unmoving, cold, and, wonyoung—or rather, the rising supermodel sarah coulter—gasps, “she’s been murdered!”

wait, wait, wait. let’s backtrack—how did we even end up in this situation? well, for starters, it’s basically halloween. maybe 20 days early, but regardless, basically halloween. and since y/n is such a genius (yes, clap all you want), she decided she wanted to host a dinner party involving everyone she talks to. which is a bit much for a dinner party, for someone who claims to not talk to too many people.

cryptic invitations were handed out mysteriously in a number of methods, including but not limited to: slipping it in the invitee’s locker, having a stranger pass it to the invitee, the invitee magically finding it in their pocket, and probably more—y/n doesn’t remember all that info. with the invitation were the details and an assigned role when scanning a qr code, along with a form where you would put your fake name to be addressed by. 

the location for the dinner party is a decently sized and lavishly-decorated party venue, with a small seating area near a bar top (serving non-alcoholic drinks, of course) and a short corridor leading to a locked dining room. guests arrived in their finest attire befitting of their assigned character, mingled for a bit wondering where y/n was, and when allowed in the mysterious locked area, were struck by horror to see the host herself on the floor and (supposedly) unconscious.

hyunseo makes brisk strides over to the body, her stethoscope shaking around her neck as she moves. as she kneels down on one knee, she presses two fingers against the pulse point on y/n’s neck and pats her face, sneakily glancing at a cue card she pulled out from her pocket a second ago. “blue around the mouth… and she’s super stuff-” she squints at the card, “stiff.” 

guests crowd and clamor around the physician, and she looks to them, “it could be poison, it also smells kind of fruity.”

minji side-eyes hanni who’s about to make some kind of joke, and it shuts her up. “but who could it be? it’s not like she poisoned herself.”

hanni raises her hand, suddenly poised and in character, “i, farandoliah von siegmeyer, have a statement to make.”

“okay, miss siegmeyer-”

“it’s farandoliah von siegmeyer, thank you, detective boonville!” she interrupts minji valiantly.

the detective replies curtly, “i am not calling you by your full legal name, miss siegmeyer. but do go on.”

everyone watches the heiress intently, curious to hear what she has to say in the midst of this tragedy; an alibi? or an accusation? “i saw eleonora and greg lingering over by the corridor,” hanni points to hyein and rei, or greg and eleonora respectively, whose faces twist into offense, “also, it wasn’t me because i was chatting up detective boonville at the bar.”

hyein adjusts her blazer which is sitting fashionably around her shoulders, her arms not in the sleeves. “this is extremely disrespectful, miss farandoliah von siegmeyer,” she spits out, “i’ll have you know i was just checking the venue out with eleonora.”

“i was only there for five minutes and left, greg was still there after i made a full lap though,” rei adds, taking her sunglasses off and folding them, tucking them into the breast pocket of her own blazer. the ceo turns to the bodyguard angrily, practically fuming. a cue card flies out of her hand and onto the floor, and everyone tries not to look at the fallen item.

“are you claiming that i murdered august!? believe me, i don’t even know why her face is blue, apparently because of poison, why would i murder august?” hyein defends herself, “if anything, miss madeline is suspicious because she kept glancing over; i could almost feel her gaze burning into my skin while i was over there.”

the guests’ attention shifts to jiwon, the librarian, who is wiping the lenses of her specs and then frowns. “i was staring because i saw lysithea going into the room.”

now they whip their heads to haerin, who furrows her brow. minji crosses her arms and narrows her eyes. “what were you doing inside the locked room?”

eunchae puts a hand into her pocket and checks a silver pocket watch which was awfully familiar to the observant eyes of danielle who then glares at her. “why do you have her watch? what would the bartender have to do with august’s watch?”

the bartender shrugs, “i took it when i saw her before you guys came in, looked expensive. hey yura, i heard you and lysithea are quite close to august, am i mistaken?”

danielle purses her lips, keeping mum about the situation. haerin looks back at minji, who has been keeping the journalist under her scrutiny. “i was having a conversation with august, and then i came back out. miss hunter,” her eyes flit to danielle briefly, “then approached me and we exchanged some… pleasantries, and she went into the room after me.”

the artist’s mouth opens and closes like a fish, unable to think of something to use as her alibi. she tries to pull her own cue card out, but something else falls from her paint-stained apron pocket, clattering to the floor. it’s a small bottle of a car maintenance product, labeled with a sticker. minji picks it up before she can, and widens her eyes, “miss hunter, what are you doing with antifreeze?”

“i,” danielle gulps, “i forgot to put it back after i used it on my car before i came here.”

wonyoung’s snooping around y/n’s body, feeling around her pockets and finding two pieces of paper. her touch makes the (well, supposed to be) dead body giggle and then stop abruptly.

(“wony-unnie, stop, i’m ticklish!” y/n whisper-shouts, not opening her eyes. wonyoung grins at her and sticks out her tongue.)

“there’s two letters on august!” the model stands up, brandishing the papers in her hand, “they seem to be from yura hunter and lysithea melbme.”

she hands them to minji, who opens one with skepticism. “my dear love august, it is a joy to attend this dinner party that you host. i’ve missed you dearly; we’ve both been so busy, our work leaves no time to go on those escapades we had back in college nowadays… i’d like to ask if you’d be up to coming with me after dinner, just the two of us. i still love you, and i’d hope you’d feel the same after we met again last weekend. sincerely, lysithea.”

danielle is biting her lip in anger and what seems to be betrayal and hurt. minji opens the other paper and clears her throat, “hey august, i know we just saw each other a few days ago but i missed you. i’ll keep it short, but do you want to hang out after this? i’ve got something really, really important to tell you. fancy me for a few, yeah? best, yura.”

“you’ve been seeing august?” haerin faces danielle, “i thought you were the one who dumped her all those years ago.”

“we made up,” danielle grits her teeth, “and i thought you haven’t seen each other in years. so that lipstick stain was yours on her collar, wasn’t it?”

“that’s beside my point. look, just because you’re jealous that she loves me and not you, doesn’t excuse the fact that you gave her antifreeze!? she’s dead, yura,” the journalist grabs the artist’s collar in rage, “dead! this goes beyond any revenge. what happened to moving on like a normal person, huh!?”

the artist looks away, ashamed, but quickly sneers at haerin, “so what if i did? i knew i wasn’t going to have august. but most of all, i didn’t want you to have her, not after you stole her away while we were on a break.”

haerin opens her mouth, only to be stopped by ‘august’ herself, who has sat up in concern. “congrats on solving the murder…? that escalated really quickly, what the heck.”

everyone’s characters break, and the chatter starts up again. haerin and danielle exchange a look that y/n can’t quite piece together, so she stands up and dusts off her legs and walks up to them. “it was fun watching you two fight over me, you know. also, if you guys could sit down for the actual dinner, that would be great.”

“we get to eat!?” hanni exclaims and gets a hand slapped over her mouth by minji, “ow! what was that for?”

there’s five on each side, with y/n at one end of the table. she holds a glass of apple cider up, smiling at the mess she orchestrated a couple of minutes ago. “to the murder of august walter!”

“you still have blue around your lips.”

“shut up, greg.”

Random Thing I Feel Like Talking About: The Vandelay Soft Drinks in Hi-Fi Rush!

Warning: Hi-Fi Rush spoilers.

Forgive me if I format this a bit weirdly, I just feel like sharing about this very minor and random thing in my current absolute #1 favorite game, Hi-Fi Rush.

Anyway, in this game, you can find these various vending machines throughout pretty much every regular level, aside from the first as they're introduced in Track 2. The whole point of them is that you can smack the heck outta them to get a bunch of gears and batteries to recharge your Reverb gauge (your beeg special attack gauge if you don't know). Very helpful for the first playthrough when you need all the gears you can get in order to get all of your moves sooner rather than later, plus you can do some casual combo practice with 'em.

In the process of destroying these vending machines though, they spit out a ton of cans of the six drinks shown on them. All six drinks are branded and based on the six department heads at Vandelay, these being Korsi-Cola, Rekka Pure Energy (Get apple Juiced), Mimosa Sparkling Water, Carte Blanche, Kale-Ale Executive (I think?), and Roquefort Espresso.

However, while messing around in Photo Mode today in Track 4, I realized something really, really cool: the drinks all actually have nutritional information on them!

But it's not just some basic scanned image grabbed from some random canned soft drink and slapped onto the textures, instead it's all stuff based on the personalities of the department head the drink is based on! Here are some pictures of each label:

I don't really know why but I just love each and every single one of these, not just for being funny and interesting, but also because they exist at all! It's such a minor detail that I feel like most people never notice, but it's just so charming to me that it's there!

Some details I wanna point out in specific about these cans are: 1) All of these labels say "Please Recycle!" at the bottom, except for Kale Ale which commandingly says "Recycle!"

2) Korsi-Cola is a caffeine-free cola which I both like the idea of as someone who loves soda but prefers non-caffeinated ones, but also I can't help but interpret this as the VAGUEST and MOST SUBTLE form of foreshadowing for at least the very end of the Decaf Firmware Update joke. And aside from just that running gag I like that it's caffeine-free and has a little label on it that says something along the lines of "a calm mind makes the right choice." It makes a lot of sense for Korsica's drink to be branded like that, namely due to what happens with her in the story and how she interacts with Chai directly before, during, and after her boss battle.

3) All of the info written on these labels and on the rest of the cans alludes to something about each character, some in more obvious ways than others. Roquefort Espresso says "Unleash Your Inner Beast" or something like that on it (along with Silver Extract as the other ingredient). Mimosa Sparkling Water has "Mimosa Flavor" as the second ingredient which is just the most vain way to put it. Carte Blanche (Zanzo's drink if you didn't put that together) as a noun literally means, "complete freedom to act as one wishes or thinks best."

I could keep talking for at least two more paragraphs but I think I'll stop here. Just wanted to share this because it's pretty funny and cool to me, and is just one of many, MANY things that shows much effort and polish went into Hi-Fi Rush.

Hot Cold Boys Summer Fest Info!

Here's some basic info about what's going on with this thing. More in-depth FAQ to come + will be releasing prompts in the following days leading up to June! Really excited to have you all with us!

What is this?

A two month, SFW Terror fandom fest! Nine weeks from June to July featuring a weekly theme with little mini prompts and mini activities in between. Prompts will be summer related and a mix of Victorian-applicable and stuff for AUs (Modern AU specifically) + a week for pride!!!!! Mini activities will include such fun stuff as filling out ship charts, putting stickers on your favorite guy, throwing a powerpoint together on why you really like this specific thing in the show, maybe even irl arts and crafts, etc.

What about the zine?

At the end of this 9 week period, a form will go out where you can submit one or two of your pieces you created for the fest. This INCLUDES anything that isn't a fic or an artwork. Some restrictions may apply (more info on this to come. restrictions will involve word count, maybe artwork size, maybe number of pages you can submit, etc.). ANY PIECE SUBMITTED THROUGH THE FORM WILL BE ACCEPTED! (with rules ofc like it must be sfw) After the submissions close, a digital zine will be put together and hosted for FREE DOWNLOAD on itch.io.

How do I participate?

Give us a follow! We'll be posting the prompts for the event at the beginning and then re-posting each week's theme and prompts every Friday! Then all you need to do is create whatever you desire fitting that prompt (or not! do whatever you want forever) and post it with the tag #hotcoldboyssummer25 + maybe the theme's specific hashtag (for example #hcbs25 week 1 or something of the sorts. this is just coz i think it would be fun to be able to look at each week separately). We'll try to reblog it here! You can also post fics and art to our Ao3 collection which I will have set up and linked when the main FAQ / Rules come out.

Are there any restrictions? Can I do [insert AU here]? Can I do [insert ship here]? Etc?

Absolutely no restrictions except for the following: must be SFW! Should be summery (because that's the zine's theme after all), and for this event we prefer sillies and fluff over angst but you can do whatever you want forever (the appeal of angst is massive and i am guilty of this sin (not writing fluff)). You don't even have to post anything anywhere! You don't have to follow prompts! You can do prompts out of order. You can only do one prompt. You can do no prompts. You can just pick one theme and do that the entire time. No limits!!!! Just make sure you're SFW!

You can also do any ships you want, crossovers with other media (though we ask that at least one Terror is involved), any AU you want, etc!

But I really want to do NSFW!!!

Keep an eye out, we're gonna' try and figure out how to offer an 18+ only after dark version as well!! (TWO ZINES WITH UNLIMITTED SUBMISSIONS YOU MUST BE CRAZY - well you see. you see. this is an act of hubris i may not survive (saying that jokingly)).

I—main mod Aubrey—do NOT know what my schedule for the summer looks like! I'm still looking for a job which may end up being full time which I will HAVE to do because I have to pay for school. On the topic of school, I'll be starting the fall semester sometime in late August! I also do not know what that schedule will look like at all. Furthermore, July is artfight month, and I love to participate every year! I'd love love love to get this zine running and really provide a good experience for ya'll (the fandom as a whole), but note that my summer may be absolutely packed. Finally, I'm on Pacific Standard Time and I currently have a terrible sleep schedule. Posts may not be made at times when you're online, so I'd suggest checking in every now and then.

i just read your response to an ask about your reason for disliking ron chernow’s alexander hamilton book, and i wanted to ask if i can still use it as source for some info. i’ve done my fair share of research on various topics and my opinions/what i’ve read differentiated strongly sometimes from what he wrote, but some things are just hard to come by (as somebody not from the US who doesn’t have local resources and has to rely on stuff i can find online). what do you suggest i do if i want more accurate info? i know the founders archive but other than that i haven’t found a lot of trustworthy sources concerning the amrev that aren’t $300 textbooks?

Girl have you seen the length of my posts? This is not long at all, and you make perfect sense.

And if you have seen my posts, you may notice that Chernow is my most frequent citation because of how valuable his biographies are as sources. He does intensely thorough research and his index and bibliography are so extensive, I can’t even make a joke about getting them as a tramp stamp.

Chernow is a great source and I do recommend any starting Hamilton scholar to get a copy, if you have the means and patience. The downfalls of it are its a hard read and his personal interpretations are heavily skewed and biased in various directions, which is only different from other historians because he doesn’t give proper evidence and substantiation to these claims. All you need to have in order to recognize this is basic critical thinking skills. Tl;dr: Chernow is a great source, he’s just fucking annoying and I hate him.

One very good thing about Chernow is that his book is so (painfully) extensive, that it can serve as a source for more than just Hamilton, so there’s no shame in using him as a source for *checks notes* how the island of St. Kitts and Nevis was formed from a volcano, if you’re into that.

I see your inability to access US propaganda and I raise you youtube documentaries. That may sound crazy, but you can put it on in the background and cross reference between them (usually repeated details are closest to the truth). They can also be entertaining, especially if they’re from the 80s (i love the 80s). Additionally, if you’re looking for archives, @maip--macrothorax can tell you all the benefits of Internet Archive (if they aren’t too busy borrowing all of the books on there /lh). You can also find a lot of things on the Library of Congress’s website, and also my favorite governmental department:

THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE!!

Go to the national park service, it includes all the battlefields, important buildings, where important buildings used to be, the houses of historical figures, and really pretty parks (also like mount gaymore (rushmore) and shit but wtvr). They have tons of information and great archivists and librarians and i long for their jobs. Also, American Battlefield Trust, Mount Vernon, The Museum of the American Revolution, etc. also have great sources and tons of information- along with wonderful reenactments that they have on youtube!!

I also do my best to make these sources as accessible as possible, so if you do some perusing you might be able to find some of this stuff here, but I am always happy to answer asks with links or research though I am very slow (sorry). And of course, my dms are open and I probably wouldn’t be totally infuriated if you found me at my local library and asked for directions to the non-fiction section. I've wanted to try doing commissions again for a while now, but I've been struggling to figure out how to do it, leaving it fully open-ended is a bit difficult and intimidating, but I figured maybe people would like to see their characters in some of these more established ongoing art styles that I use in the Mario Character Project, the Kirby Character Project, and the Spirits Project. This also makes it easier to figure out pricing and stuff, so I wanna give it a shot!

Let's go through each of the three styles so you know what to expect and the prices for each one:

First, the Mario Character Project! This project is designed to be a bit quick and simple, because of the insanely large quantity of characters the series has. While the style is a bit loose and simple, I still put a lot of effort into making the characters look nice, and they're all fully colored. I'll put more polish into commissions than I would drawing a random Mario enemy, I imagine. A Mario Character Project commission would include:

A full-body drawing of a character or multiple characters. Simple black lineart and flat colors. Characters will be drawn accurately and relatively detailed.

An image of the character or characters on the usual bluish-gray background, with the drop-shadow and stuff.

A separate transparent copy of the portrait will also be provided.

Base price for a Mario Character Project commission is $20 USD. Additional characters can be added in a single commission, with a discounted price of $10 USD per additional character. For example, three characters would be worth $40 instead of $60. I may have the price go up or down depending on character complexity.

Please do not request any characters that appear in any Mario games. I will already be drawing these characters at some point in the future, and am not interested in skipping ahead to characters that appear later. This includes guest characters. If you're unsure if I'll be drawing a character for this project, please ask!

Next, there's the Spirits Project! There are two separate types of Spirits Projects commissions I'm accepting. The first type is a normal commission in the Spirits art style, any character you'd like me to draw that isn't already a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. A normal Spirits Project commission would include:

A full-body drawing of a character. Characters are given a distinct stylized design, usually much more simplified, especially human characters. Characters are drawn with clean black lineart and flat colors.

A separate transparent copy of the portrait will also be provided.

A "Series" symbol. In Smash Bros., this is a unique symbol based on the franchise/series the character comes from, such as the Mushroom symbol for the Mario series, or the Triforce symbol for the Zelda series. If your requested character comes from an established franchise, I will design a series symbol to the best of my ability, but will gladly take ideas if you have any suggestions. If it's an original character and you don't really have anything specific already, I can try designing something that fits the character, or just use a basic placeholder if you don't really care.

Additional informational text. This isn't factored in the pricing, it's just text, but my usual Spirits drawings include the characters name, series of origin, their Spirit number, and their Class ranking. Class rankings are represented by 1-4 stars, with 1 being the weakest class, and 4 being the strongest. I'll ask what ranking you'd like them to have, but this is all just bonus stuff for fun! Don't worry about it too much.

Base price for Spirits commission is $25 USD, including the series symbol. I may have the price go up or down depending on character complexity.

In addition to the normal Spirits Project commissions, I will also be allowing requests to skip ahead to specific Spirits! Normally, I've been drawing the Spirits in a completely random order. However, if you'd like to see me draw a specific Spirit right now, I will be doing paid skip commissions, and I'll immediately prioritize your requested Spirit. To clarify, this is specifically any of the 1,528 Spirits that are in the game, and that I haven't already drawn. To elaborate on pricing:

The normal rate for a standard Spirit is $7 USD. This price may go up or down based on character complexity. It's obviously easier to draw Waddle Dee than it is a Bayonetta enemy or whatever.

Fighter Spirits are $15 USD. This includes any playable fighter on the roster. These Spirits usually require two separate drawings, and I've also been doing alternate costumes/colors as well, so they're higher effort.

This will not effect the way I've already been doing the Spirits project, I will continue doing them in random order as usual. But if anybody really wants to see me skip to a specific Spirit, than the option is there. You can also think of it as a discount for me drawing a character you like in this style, if they happen to already be in the game. Like if you really want to see me draw Leon Kennedy in this style, then you're in luck, he already has a Spirit.

Finally, there's the Kirby Character project! This project is easily the most complex of the three, there's a lot that goes into it. Not only is the main character portrait more detailed than the others, but I also do additional sketches, as well as logo designs, so it all adds up. A Kirby Character commission would include:

A full-body shaded character drawing. Each drawing includes clean black lineart and fully shaded colors. More detailed characters might struggle to adapt to the style, such as human characters, but I will try my best. If you want me to try to adapt the design to a more Kirby-esque style, I can do that too!

Bonus sketches of the character. I like to fill in the blank space of the canvas with a variety of simple doodles of the character in a variety of poses and actions. If you have any specific ideas, I can doodle them, or I may ask for pointers on a characters personality or abilities for inspiration. Otherwise, I can just improvise.

A logo of the character's name. Each character I draw for this project gets their own "logo", a custom drawn version of the characters name, unique to each character. I will do my best to design a fitting logo for any character you commission.

There are also additional logos for the characters' "Debut" and "Abilities". These will be separately paid bonuses, as they're pretty high effort on top of everything else. The "Debut" section is for the characters place of origin. Usually this is a specific video game title, but it'll depend on the character. If you request an original character that doesn't belong to a specific "series" or something like that, I can make a logo of your username or something else. The "Abilities" is typically for any Copy Abilities that the character may provide for Kirby. If there's an existing Copy Ability you think would fit your character, I can add the logo to this section free of charge, since I'm already designing these logos for the project. However, if you want me to make a custom logo for a nonexistent Ability, that'll be extra. For example, if your character uses an Axe, and you want me to make an "Axe" ability logo, despite that not existing in the Kirby series (yet), it'll be an additional price. Both of these bonus logos cost $5 USD each on top of the base price.

Base price for a Kirby Character Project commission is $50 USD, including the portrait, sketches, and name logo. Prices may go up or down depending on character complexity.

I highly suggest all read through my second source, it is very informative about growth, sensations, and also has some good general knowledge as well.

Clitoral hypertrophy: the clitoris growing in length and width while taking testosterone.

So a t-phallus very much looks like the head of a penis, the shape, the contours, it just doesn't have a hole for urination like a penis or a shaft especially when you are aroused. A t-phallus gets erect when you are aroused just like a penis. It is considered the pleasure organ.

During arousal (turned on), it actually swells up and fills with blood, becoming erect and more stiff (hard)

While your t-phallus gets bigger on testosterone many people describe their changes in their orgasms and pleasurable feeling. For example you may like a different kind of touch now because that feels more pleasurable. "Some people describe feeling a more erection-like sensation when aroused." - source 2

Typical bottom growth on testosterone therapy is typically 1 to 4 cm, sometimes even more, this growth varies. One small study¹ about bottom surgery reported the average length of bottom growth measured from 2.5 cm to 4 cm in the study participants who eventually underwent surgery. Another study² found that at the one year mark, the average growth was 4.6 cm.

During sexual intercourse with someone with female genitalia: will require you to use a dental dam as protection (dental dam information), this is just basically a sheet of latex or another kind of plastic (like male condoms), to prevent direct contact. You don't not just need to use one during oral sex but if you are rubbing your genitals together it may be a good idea. If you are sharing toys make sure to clean them thoroughly between using it on the opposite person. (Making sure sex toys are clean is always a good idea).

If you are having sexual intercourse with cis males/ male genitalia: you should be requiring that person to wear a condom, even if they are trans themselves, any bodily fluid contact can spread a STI. Or you can use female condoms.

The basics of modding bingo:

We work largely in canva (for making the cards) and google forms (for sign ups and fill submission) and sheets (for tracking participants and fills). That said, you don't need a whole lot of experience with any of these things: we've got handy-dandy templates set up on canva for the cards, and I like to think the spreadsheets are as close to foolproof as a spreadsheet can get (though if you happen to open any of them and immediately find a better way to do something, I'm very happy to listen).

We get a lot of sign ups in January, and then a steady trickle for the rest of the year. The sign up spreadsheet randomly selects prompts based on the categories someone picked, we check the list over to make sure there's a decent number of their wanted prompts and none of their unwanted prompts on there, then copy it to the tracker spreadsheet, pop the prompts onto the template in canva, and then email out the card.

February onwards, the bulk of the work is the tumblr queue. There's a formula on the tracker spreadsheet that puts all the info from the fill submission form into a nice neat html format that we copy to a tumblr post. It's not difficult, but it can be a bit time consuming.

Badges: so far, I'm the one who has done the badges, but if someone artistically inclined wants to volunteer I would be very happy to have the help. We do three main badges (participation, bingo and blackout) and a minimum of five bonus badges (one every two months). In an ideal world, these would go out throughout the round, but those of you still waiting for your round three badges know that this is very much not an ideal world…

Discord stuff: all our participants are lovely people, so mostly all that's required here is answering the occasional question. There's no real requirement for you to be an active participant in the main discord server, though we have a few mod channels where we discuss the technical side of running things and make sure we're all on the same page, plus figuring out what we're doing for bonus badges and card designs and whatnot. It's a nice, easy way for us to communicate with each other, but if you desperately don't want to join I'm sure we could find a way around it.

Charlie's face is based off info where demons make themselves look/act friendly in order to lure people to them

The twist is Charlie's luring (unintentionally) people in for good intentions

Her face is supposed to look familiar/common but enough to look kinda unique

The doll theme going on is to make Charlie s bit uncanny; aka how skinwalkers are

She looks fake and hollow, her face looks empty, kind of how someone putting on facade looks like (again referencing demon lore)

dolls just being almost everyone's least favorite thing in general because of how uncanny and creepy they are

The only thing she's hiding is a literal angel

She only has small goat features (two pairs of ears and hooves) because technically the goat symbolism came from the Church demonizing Pan

I think it slightly adds to her symbolism of being like a sheep/lamb (innocent and pure)

the pure/uncanny look symbolizes how she's kind and sweet and other stuff but she's inexperienced (lacking basically) and bites more than she can chew in terms of the hotel

she's scared of the abuse and violations that comes with her power dynamics leading her to not have that much of a spine, which vaggie helps with

Exterminators dress up like higher-up angels (see Charlie's true form to have an idea of it) in order to look more terrifying and intimidating

Their mask serves as a lure of some sort where you can't help but look at them (kind of how we don't wanna see disturbing things but we can't help but stare at them when they appear)

I think the look I gave them + some of their bloodthirsty nature's brings in more of the horror

I do like the fact they look like regular people underneath the masks because it kinda reminds you of heaven's hierarchy

hello! thank you for reaching out about this, and I just so happen to use photoshop! I'll give a general over-view of how I make my gifs with step-by-step info with images. I will warn that I have a very old version of photoshop, so it'll probably look different; but the essence should be the same. guide under the read more to not clog feeds!

import your video that you'd like to gif

you'll navigate to file > import > video frames to layers. a box will pop up asking you to go to wherever you have your video saved. you can use some downloader online if you'd like for your videos (be careful!), or you can use vlc media player, a free software. (if you'd like a tutorial on that, let me know!) click on whatever video you'd like to import and import it.

2. select the part of the video to import for your gif

another pop-up will come up and it will look something like what's below. no clue if the settings will look like that for you, but that's okay. you'll use the two little black arrows(?) at the bottom of the video player to select whatever part of the video you'd like to gif. the left-hand-side will change to "selected range only" once you do that. make sure that "make frame animation" is clicked. I don't know if photoshop changed this, but for me, I can only import 500 frames at one time. a warning box will pop up when you hit "OK" if you have more than 500 frames. you'll learn over time how many frames a scene probably takes up, and for bigger scenes, you'll need a few files to gif everything you'd like.

3. clean up what you imported to be the exact layers you wanna gif

once you hit okay, your screen should look something like this.

because you clicked "make frame animation", you'll see the frame animation at the bottom as well as all the layers on the right-hand-side. here's where you'll start deleting layers that you don't want in the gif because usually you'll have a few frames that are from the previous or following scene depending on what parts you chose.

I want to delete the first 13 layers because they are from the scene before. so I'll select all 13 layers on the right and hit the trash can. a box might pop up and ask if you want to do that action. you'll say yes.

your animation timeline at the bottom of the screen will look something like this now.

you'll select all those blank layers in the timeline and hit the trash can. if another box pops up asking if you want to do that, just hit yes again.

you'll do the same thing at the end of the timeline with the latter layers. delete what layers are from the following scene of what you wanna gif, and then delete the blank frames in the timeline below.

4. create your gif

your screen should look like this. (lol @ me making a gif of my favorite scene again.) you'll have the entire clip you want to gif in the timeline as well as your layers.

now, you'll want to crop your gif to whatever size you'd like. pressing c will get you to the crop function, and you'll drag the sizes of the canvas to get rid of any excess black space on the bottom of the images.

if you know how many pixels/inches to take off for the image (I do after doing it enough times), control + alt + c will get you to the "canvas size" pop-up. it usually defaults to inches; I change it to pixels. if you know the exact dimensions you'd like, you'd put them here and hit "OK".

so now your gif will look like this.

before you actually "form" the gif, you'll have to change the time between each frame. you'll select all the layers in the timeline at the bottom and click the little downward arrow on one of the layers. this is entirely up to preference, but I usually hit "other..." and use either 0.06, 0.08, or 0.1 seconds depending the scene. I've found it doesn't really change the file size of the gif, but it does make the scene go slower or faster depending. you can play around with it and see what you prefer.

technically, you are done with your gif now. you'd just have to resize your gif to whatever size you'd like and save it for web. however. I'm going to show you what more you can do to your gifs to make them just a little better.

5. spice up your gif

with the timeline layers still highlighted/selected, you'll click the little button with three lines on the right-hand-side of the timeline and click "convert to video timeline".

the timeline will change to this and all the layers on the right-hand-side will now be visible, as seen by the eye icon being clicked for all of them.

you're going to select all your layers on the right.

then, navigate to filter > convert to smart filters. a pop-up might come up. just press OK. your timeline and layers will now look like this.

you can do loads of things with the layer on the right now. you can apply sharpening filters, gaussian blurs, whatever you'd like honestly. you can find all these options under filters (> sharpen (or > blur)). here's how you find smart sharpen. it's best to just play around with filters to see what you like best. (I can also provide some guidance if you'd like.)

for instance, I created an action for sharpening my gifs, and you'll see on the right-hand-side all the filters that I applied to my gif. this makes the gif look crisper and/or smoother.

you can also play around with the coloring of your gifs by clicking the (half) circle icon. loads of options will pop up, but the one I'll show you today will be the curves option. (make sure you have selected the top-most layer of your layers to apply the curve or whatever else to every layer - it sort of acts as a filter over-top of everything.)

the curve box will pop up, and you'll click the diagonal line to adjust the color/brightness curves applied to the image.

each curve you apply to a gif will make the gif look slightly different, and curves usually can't be applied from one gif to another unless you are making a gif of the same scene across multiple gifs. you learn best by just playing with this filter to see what makes the gif look the best, and the curve will adjust as you move those small squares on the line/curve; so you'll see all your changes as you work on them. the before and after the curve is below.

in this instance for the colors and brightness of this scene, I would do more filtering and coloring to adjust how bright it is and to tone down all the greens and yellows (damn yellows!) in the scene. at the end of those adjustments, the gif will look something like this. I added a selective color filter, played around with the yellow in the gif, and then added another curve to make the darker parts a little darker.

6. save your gif

prior to saving your gif, you'll want to resize it to something reasonable. you'll note that I didn't resize until this point - I just cropped the scene. this is to ensure you are working with the most pixels for the editing/filtering process. you lose clarity when you size down, so you want to save all re-sizing for the final steps.

when you resize for websites like tumblr, the widest you should ever really make your gifs is 500 pixels. the width of the dashboard is 500 pixels and anything wider will get compressed by tumblr. compression = bad for gifs, so we want to avoid that at all costs.

you can use the short cut control + alt + i to get to the image size screen. it should automatically be in pixels - if not, change it. keep all the things at the bottom checked if not already checked, and change the width to 500 pixels.

now, you'll save your gif. the shortcut to save for web is control + alt + shift + s, or you can go to file > save for web. it might take a few seconds for the gif to load, but this will pop-up.

important things to go over. you'll want to change "looping options" to "forever".

also, you're gonna want to look at the file size of the gif.

you'll see that this gif is 2.208M, which is a little too big for best optimization for tumblr (less than 2.0M is best to prevent compression - though it could be 3.0M now based on things I've read. so ideally, just keep your gif size below 3.0M or else tumblr will compress the crap out of it.) in order to change the file size of the gif, you can go back and make the canvas smaller, so crop more off from the top or bottom of the gif; get rid of frames from the gif itself, which will involve you going all the way back to the beginning and deleting frames before you converted to smart filters; or just think of other crafty ways to make the file size smaller. for this example gif, however, we are good to save it.

the "save optimized as" box will pop up, and you'll just navigate to where you wanna save your gif and done.

7. celebrate your achievement

you did it! you made your first gif!

8. practice, practice, practice

I've been making gifs on and off for years, and I'm just learning the little details to make my gifs way better with different filters and blurs and everything else (because photoshop is powerful). the first few gifs will be bad or difficult to do, but after you make ten, twenty, thirty (or gif a really, really long scene), you'll be so much better. then, you'll get a feel for what looks good for your style - color filters, vibrancy, curves. after that, you can add captions on your gifs (can give tutorial if needed) or add static images to overlay (also can give tutorial) or even do fun things like these here, here, here, and here.

Hey guess what it's a ref for a character i draw once every 5 yrs max.... but he is one of my older characters, having existed in some form for years and years now, and I will forever have a soft spot for him, even if he is relegated to a side character these days. Maybe I'll find a comfy short story for him to play the leading role in some day, or maybe I'll find a fun rp setting to involve him in.

The info below is how he is in my urban fantasy 'verse, but he's existed in other settings with some alterations to fit them better.

James "Skie" Marlow [never called by his real name, and goes either by Skie or "Mr. Blue" or some similar variant] is a fae-blooded* information salesman, and he has lots of enemies and not many friends -- he knows a bit too much. As mentioned, he deals in information (though he does occasionally get involved in other stuff as well; he is not afraid of fraud, blackmail, or other criminal activities) and has an incredible memory -- if you want dirt on someone, he either has it, can get it, or has an idea as to where to start. To the people who know him, he generally comes off as very smug and confident, and has the aura of a particularly skilled salesman, which he probably is, if you, like, think about it... He can be very charming too, if he wants to, and he is very good at appearing just "a bit eccentric but nice and harmless" to people who don't know him. Earning his loyalty or genuine friendship is hard: because he is always on the look for something exploitable, he subconsciously assumes everyone else is doing the same. If you can prove you really don't have ulterior motives, it's possible. Skie generally tends to form deeper friendships with people who are dissimilar to him in personality: he likes quiet, serious and honest people. Skie is fairly selfish and vain, and generally puts himself first in most situations, but this doesn't mean he is just... like... look. He is capable of liking people and if he likes your company enough, he can perform seemingly selfless or self-sacrificing acts so he can enjoy your company a bit longer. When he was in his twenties, he fell in love with a woman involved in gang crime, and this is probably the closest Skie has ever come to genuine selfless feelings. The nature of their lives made them drift apart, but secretly Skie still carries the torch for her, and has more or less completely written serious relationships off.  He is a noted wimp when it comes to physical fights. He isn't particularly strong or skilled as a fighter, and in fact hates getting his hands dirty (in a fight). He will fight only if absolutely necessary and in self-defense, and would rather surrender (and look for an escape/wait to be rescued/talk his way out) than fight. He has a surprisingly high tolerance for pain, though, and is weirdly used to getting roughed up a bit. Skie never gets drunk, and generally avoids alcohol and any mind-altering substances altogether. He prides himself in staying sharp in all situations. Some other notes: > No matter the outfit, he will always wear blue hues. When he was younger he went for brighter blues, but now as he's in his late thirties, he mostly wears more muted blues. > He has spatial sequence synesthesia, and views dates and past happenings in relation to space around him. It helps his already stellar memory. > His hair is technically black, but should be stylized as dark blue gray with blue highlights, unless you're going for realistic art styles. [*fae-blooded basically means he is mostly human, but has fae heritage of some sort, in his case his father was a changeling.]

Hey I dunno if you’ve gotten this before but. Do you have anything on autism and DID/OSDD? Specifically resources or accounts and such (since I’ve seen the positivity post)

I struggle with emotional dysregulation, big memory issues (huge chunks of childhood and adolescence missing, forgetting things constantly, dissociating emotions from memories, etc,) frequent daydreaming/spacing out/dissociation, that type of thing (and a bit more that’s a little too complicated to explain in an ask lol)

I’ve always kind of figured it was just part of me being autistic (I’m professionally diagnosed and definitely very autistic regardless lol), but I’ve recently gone down a bit of a rabbit hole relating to plurality and now I’m wondering if it could be a symptom of DID/OSDD instead/as well (I was originally looking at something else and stumbled into the tags somehow. The original thing that led me here was foxes. I think. And then I had a bit of a panic as I realized how some of the symptoms were VERY close to some of my experiences. Especially the memories.) but i also can’t tell if it’s just some sort of brain fog(???? Is that the correct term?) / alexithymia / Unknown Autism Trait 3 that nobody ever talks about and is difficult to find any sort of explanation or resources for. And my brain protested and had the equivalent of being on the verge of a sobbing meltdown or mental overload of some sort when I tried to think about stuff relevant to the topic so I don’t think it’s going to be of much help to me right now.

obviously not asking for diagnosis or to self diagnose at all (since. I understand you cant really do either of those /lh /nm) but I’m curious if any of you know of any resources relating to this specific type of stuff? I feel like I’d go insane trying to find any info on it. (And also I don’t think my brain would want to cooperate if I asked it to because it basically shuts down, gives me a headache, and turns to a pathetic wet sobbing cat whenever I try to think about the possibility so I doubt I’ll be identifying as anything anytime soon but. hey, we also are autistic and have dissociative identity disorder. unfortunately, there isn’t really too much research on the overlap between autism and complex dissociative disorder diagnoses at this time, that we know of, but we do think that autistic people may have a higher likelihood of dissociating and developing a cdd than neurotypical people.

I’d love to give you some recommendations! In fact, since I’ve gotten quite a few comments and asks from people who’ve never dipped their toes into monster romance before, I’m thinking of turning this into a little “Guide to Monster Romance” post. Since you all seem to enjoy my siren!Arthur AU!

Below the cut, I’ve put together some key info and recommendations that I think will be perfect for curious readers. 😉

Let’s start with the basics, shall we? Some definitions are in order to better understand why we enjoy this kind of romance and the distinctions between different types of attraction.

Two terms that often come up in discussions about monster romance are teratophilia and exophilia. While they’re sometimes used interchangeably, they actually describe different but overlapping attractions.

Teratophilia refers to an attraction to beings that are monstrous or deformed by human standards. This includes creatures that might have exaggerated or unsettling features—think demons, werewolves, vampires, or eldritch horrors with too many eyes (or even siren!arthur). The appeal of teratophilia often comes from the blend of danger, power, and otherworldly beauty, as well as the emotional themes of acceptance and intimacy despite physical inhuman differences.

Exophilia, on the other hand, is an attraction to the alien, the completely other. It’s about a fascination with beings that exist outside the realm of human experience, such as extraterrestrials, deep-sea leviathans, or sentient AI/robots. Where teratophilia might lean into the monstrous and grotesque, exophilia often embraces the unknowable and the strange—forms of intimacy that challenge the limits of human understanding.

Both play into the themes of desire beyond the ordinary, exploring love and attraction without human limitations. And that’s exactly what makes this romance so compelling!

Monster romance thrives on themes that tap into deep emotional and psychological yearnings—particularly those of acceptance, transformation, and love beyond the ordinary. While every story has its own unique spin, there are some recurring themes that define the genre:

The Monster as the Outcast - One of the most common tropes in monster romance is the idea of the monster as an outsider—shunned by society (or its own people), feared, or even hunted for what it is. Whether it’s a misunderstood beast, a cursed creature, or an alien being stranded in a world that sees it as a threat, the monster often carries a profound loneliness. This naturally sets the stage for a romance built on recognition—the human protagonist is often the first to see past the monstrous exterior and acknowledge the being’s pain, intelligence, or humanity (even when it isn’t actually human).

“I Am Unlovable” - Closely tied to the outcast theme is the monster’s belief that it is unworthy of love. It may view itself as a hideous thing, unfit for companionship, or even dangerous to those who come too close. This often creates an angsty dynamic where the monster struggles to accept the affection of the protagonist, fearing it’s a mistake or that it will end in heartbreak. This self-loathing is a powerful emotional hook because it allows the human love interest to challenge that perception, proving through their actions that love is not just about appearances. (This is a personal favorite trope of mine)

The FMC’s Inner Conflict - In many monster romances, the female protagonist struggles with her feelings—how could she possibly love something so inhuman? Society, fear, and instinct all tell her to run, to reject the creature before her. But as she spends time with him, she realizes that what she initially perceived as monstrous—his sharp claws, his glowing eyes, his alien physiology—masks something deeply beautiful. She sees his kindness, his protectiveness, his vulnerability, and suddenly, the way he looks no longer matters. What once repulsed her now feels familiar, even cherished. This shift in perspective is at the heart of so many monster romances, reinforcing the idea that true love is about seeing someone for who they really are.

Beauty and the Beast Reversed - While monster romance often draws from the classic Beauty and the Beast framework, it frequently subverts the idea of the beast needing to become human. Instead, the heroine often grows to embrace the monster as he is, falling for him not in spite of his appearance but because of who he is as a whole. The monster doesn’t need to be “fixed” or transformed into a handsome prince—love itself is the transformation, reshaping both characters into something stronger.

The Duality of Danger and Safety - A fascinating aspect of monster romance is how it plays with the contrast between danger and protection. But more often, it’s a metaphorical transformation: the heroine evolves in her understanding of what love looks like, while the monster learns to accept himself and allow love into his life. These stories challenge traditional notions of attraction, beauty, and belonging, leaving us with the profound idea that love is not about looking perfect.

If you're new to the genre and looking for something soft, sweet, and packed with spice (but not too monstrous), I highly recommend the Ice Planet Barbarians series by Ruby Dixon.

The series consists of 21 standalone books, though I definitely suggest reading them in order because there's an overarching plot that adds depth to the stories. The books follow a group of human women who are abducted by aliens, only to crash on a frozen planet where they encounter the native barbarians—large, strong, and sometimes a little rough around the edges. Each book focuses on a different couple, exploring themes of survival, love, and the fierce chemistry between the humans and their alien mates. While the romance is at the heart of each story, there’s also plenty of adventure, emotional growth, humor, and hornyness, making it a well-rounded series for fans of spicy romance with a touch of sci-fi.

The IPB series also offers great representation of diverse female characters, each with unique backgrounds, personalities, and strengths. The heroines vary in age, body type, and life experience—some are strong and independent, while others grow into their strength through their relationships with their alien mates. The series features women from very different walks of life, such as scientists, artists, and everyday women, showing that love, growth, and self-discovery are for everyone.

If you’re a fan of The Dark Tide and looking for something in a similar vein, I highly recommend Emma Hamm’s Deep Waters series.

While I’ve only read the first book so far, it’s clear that this series is a perfect blend of dystopian steampunk elements and underwater fantasy, and it deeply inspired my own story. Set in a world where underwater cities are teeming with secrets and hidden dangers, the series introduces mermen who are visually striking and alien in their appearance but have rich, vibrant personalities that bring them to life in a way that feels both unique and endearing. If you love the idea of exploring mysterious underwater realms, full of intrigue and adventure, with a dash of romance and spice, these books are sure to captivate you. They're incredible slow burns that focus on developing feelings rather than just sexual desire. Plus, the cover art is absolutely stunning!

(I devoured the first book in one sitting. It's easily one of my favorite romances!)

Another series that is particularly easy to enjoy for new readers is the Duskwalker Brides series by Opal Reyne.

This series blends dark romance, fantasy, and adventure, offering a captivating escape into a world filled with fascinating characters, demonic creatures and unique dynamics. Set in a world where the Duskwalkers, mysterious and powerful beings, rule the land, the series centers around women who find themselves chosen as brides to these enigmatic creatures. What makes the series so appealing is its accessibility—it's easy to dive into with engaging plots, a good balance of tension and romance, and characters you can’t help but root for. (a warning, this series is VERY spicy. There is a lot of monster fucking in these books) The Duskwalkers, though fierce and otherworldly, are complex and emotionally rich, making for an exciting mix of danger and passion. With strong world-building, character growth, and plenty of steamy moments, its a great choice for readers new to the genre or anyone looking for an enjoyable, immersive experience.

(Personally, I only read the first book in this series. It just wasn't my cup of tea)

This next series focuses on MLM monster romances, and while I haven’t started it yet, Monstrous by Lily Mane is high on my TBR list, and I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews!

The series offers a thrilling mix of fantasy, romance, and supernatural intrigue. From what I’ve gathered, it dives into the deep, emotional connections between human men and monstrous, otherworldly creatures. These monsters are more than just fearsome—they’re complex, layered beings with distinct personalities that bring an exciting dynamic to the romance. I also believe some of these monsters would fall into the exophilia category. The world-building is rich, the characters are emotionally compelling, and the chemistry between the leads is absolutely electric. If you love a dark, steamy romance with supernatural twists and complex relationships, this series is definitely one to check out. From what I've heard, they re surprisingly sweet and sad and a bit graphic. Think hurt/comfort and loads of angst. I can’t wait to dive in myself!

Professor of Hoshino-Ailogy, might you have some tips on how to write the dear Miss genius idol herself? 🙇‍♀️ Been trying to dabble into writing stuff but her character's got me stuck. Been loving your OnK thoughts so I thought to try shooting an ask if that's ok!

Anon I know this is the joke but I am so genuinely moved at the idea of being considered a Professor Of Hoshino Aiology............ It really is all I was put on this earth to do. I immediately changed my discord name to this LMFAO

So! My recommendation would be to go back to OnK and specifically review episode 1 of the anime, as its take on Ai does a lot to flesh her out in comparison to the equivalent manga chapters. You should also check out Akane's little Pepe Silvia bit on episode 7, both so you can pick up on all that info and so you can point at the screen and go "Wow! She is Literally Me right now." (Anyone else? Just me? OK...)

And while everyone on earth has undoubtedly seen it already, take some time to chew on the Idol MV's imagery - the song as a whole and the MV specifically is basically just Ai's whole arc condensed and abstracted so it's good to look at how Ai is portrayed here and really think about why those choices were made.

After that, read Viewpoint B and 45510 side by side and do your best to put them in conversation with each other. What do these opposing views on Ai have to say about her and her motivations? That kind of thing. I also tentatively recommended reading the first chapter of Spica since it's some of our lengthiest unbroken Ai POV content, with the caveat that Spica doesn't always match up with how the main series talks about and portrays the same events so uh. Feel free to cherrypick what you take from it LOL

The Da Vinci interview and Artificial Girl are also both important in terms of getting a look at "Ai of B-Komachi" and seeing how she operates strictly in work mode. The Da Vinci interview also has some important notes about her history and relationships to certain other characters, so I think it's good to chew on in general!

From there, the most important manga chapters to review imo are 131, 136 and 137. 131 expands on Ai's history with her mom & has information about the abuse she put up with. As I've said before, her formative experiences with abuse and neglect and Ayumi's hands basically run through her entire soul like fault lines, so it's important to get a good understanding of that to start unfucking how it affects her behaviour. 

136 and 137 are also really important in understanding the emotional narrative of Ai's life, even if the literal events they portray obviously need to be taken with a grain of salt. We generally only see Ai of B-Komachi as a beguiling presence but 136 gives us a good look at just how fucking frustrating she would be to try and have a human relationship with and how this mask and Ai's general avoidance and discomfort with serious conversations contributes to her social isolation.

137 is, in my totally biased opinion, one of the best chapters in the entire series and so, so important for understanding Ai. It lays out in plain terms the most important foundational keystone of her entire character: that she was a normal, lonely girl struggling to connect and to find happiness and her desperation was taken advantage of so people could turn her into an object.

I think it's possible to get a good read on Ai just from the prologue arc, the rest of this material is important as reiteration and expansion on her core character. With all of it together, you should start picking up on patterns in her behaviour and drawing connections between her actions and the things that inform them.

If you're still having trouble figuring her out after that, here are some points I think are really important to keep in mind that often go overlooked when it comes to Ai:

Ai is neurodivergent and an abuse survivor

Ai is stated at least twice in the text of Oshi no Ko to have a developmental disorder and I think there's enough evidence in the text to say that she's intended to be read as autistic specifically.

On top of that, Ai's formative years were spent on a home environment where she could not rely on her primary guardians to consistently care for her and she was alternately neglected and violently physically abused, to the point of not feeling safe in her own house at night.

This is important to keep in mind because while Ai is pretty good at masking, her neurodivergence and her history with abuse means that she processes information - particularly social information - in a very different way to a neurotypical person.

Ai does not always lie - and her lies are different than you think

I've said this a million times before and I'll probably say it another million but a lot of the really out of pocket Ai takes you see in OnK fandom generally come from people who go to the extreme of dismissing everything that comes out of Ai's mouth as a lie and thus just completely missing out on a majority of her characterization.

Ai's "lie" is her performance - it's the illusion that "Ai of B-Komachi" is her true self with absolutely nothing else going on in her personal life. It's not a case of making shit up, but leaving things out - obfuscation and omission are the name of the game.

Picking up on when she's being honest Vs telling a lie is just something you end up getting a feel for as you get an understanding of her but generally, if Ai directly and plainly states something and it is not in conflict with things we know to be fact, then it's probably true enough.

This isn't a strict binary obviously and there are plenty of times where Ai says something that is obviously untrue but isn't her consciously lying - rather, like any human being, she has biases that affect her judgement, with her own stemming from her history of abuse and rejection and her poor self image.

The fact that Ai lies is less important than WHY she lies

This is sort of a reiteration of what I said above but where a lot of people get stuck on Ai's external behavior (that she lies) and fail to take dig into underlying motivations that actually cause her to behave that way. I know "this character has motivations" is probably like an insultingly baby mode reminder but I really do see so many people just completely abjectly failing to grasp this that I felt it needed saying lol

Deception is not Ai's end goal. Ai lies not because she wants to trick people but because she's been taught over and over her whole life that it's the only way she can be treated with basic fucking decency, and she has internalized this persistent cruelty as being her own fault. She performs Ai of B-Komachi because there is clearly something wrong with Hoshino Ai.

Even with that in mind, this isn't something Ai wants. As she says herself says in 45510, she wants people to know and accept her as she really is, flaws and impurity and all, and as she demonstrates in both Viewpoint B and chapter 1, she's incredibly quick to start opening up to people who seem to have the potential to accept her, or even just who treat her kindly. She is simply that lonely and that desperate to connect.

I hope this is all helpful, anon! I didn't necessarily want to just point by point how I write Ai just because I think that takes the fun out of things, but this is more or less the process I went through in forming my interpretation of her, and the rest is all things I've just intuited or drawn my own conclusions about from writing her - "oh, if Behaviour X, then Underlying Cause Y", that kind of thing. I hope this gives you a solid base to work on for writing her, tho - and please let me know when you're done so I can read it 👀

Like 12 years ago I was a weird little shut-in with gender issues who went to LGBT Center support groups a lot, and one of my friends had a semi-popular blog where they gave people permission to Explore Their Genders and Be Trans. They would also post memes about the beauty of choosing your own gender, like, "Gender is a game and I'm here to win!" Idk, in retrospect, I guess it was typical tucute stuff. I remember people mocking some of their posts on Tumblr in Action and insisting that my friend would never transition because nobody on Tumblr transitions, to give you an idea of the discursive landscape around nonbinary transness at the time.

And it was just... apparent to me at the time, though not articulated as such, that this was just some kid giving other kids advice, and that this person barely knew what they were doing, and also there were forms of gender exploration that they actually disliked quite a bit. Their rl friend came out as a trans dude and they DM'd me on Skype about how it upset them because men suck, etc. They would brag about their Kevin Bacon number re: this trans woman blogger who thought trans men shouldn't exist and everyone should just be a woman or woman-aligned nonbinary person. (People tend to exaggerate about weird gender politics stuff on 2010s Tumblr, esp where trans women are concerned, but this was legit what she believed and spent a lot of time posting about.) And even though I was like, agender in 2013, I remember seeing that stuff and going "Oops, that's about me", and wondering if I actually could come out as a dude and not lose my small support network. Lest I come off better than my friend here, I was still saying weird hostile shit about trans men and railing against "trans male positivity" at the time, because I bought into this trans-inclusive misandry shtick and also assumed that trans men would think I was an annoying trender because I looked like a "theyfab". (I don't use that word for other people but that's basically what was going on with me.)

And it was also weird to me that the tone of my friend's posting about gender was so, like, triumphant, so effusively "you can do whatever you want forever", when the actual reception of their nonbinary identity was not great, in ways that seemed to be kind of undermining their relationships with people irl. I remember they came out to their favorite teacher in high school, and she didn't like the idea of using singular they for them because it seemed ungrammatical. Their parents also didn't really get it or put in much effort to switch name or pronouns at all. Even people at the LGBT Center, where giving your preferred pronouns was somewhat normal, constantly slipped up re: my friend, and I know my friend found all of this super distressing.

Anyways, that was how a bunch of trans stuff (esp nb stuff) felt in 2013-- like it was a bunch of kids educating each other and hyping each other up. Older people either rejected it out of hand as impractical and weird and thought you should just kind of deal, or were curious and trying their best to take it seriously as a concept-- but they were getting all of their info on it from people in their late teens. The adults at the LGBT Center (like, 30s-50s) were very much like "Wow I've never met a nonbinary person before! Huh, that's kind of intriguing". One of them (lesbian in her fifties) was like very obviously considering whether she would have been NB if this had been an option for her growing up. But none of them could offer advice for how to deal with our gender issues or like, mentorship. There was no real sense that you could be an openly nonbinary person in your 30s or beyond, or what that would involve. So it fell to a bunch of very online late teenagers to give strangers permission slips to have pronouns.

What an era dude.
