Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

when you're part of a group with structural power over another goup, you really do gotta just learn to say "i am not exempt from 'fuck 'em' when relevant" whenever someone expresses frustration with you or people like you.

a family bigger than 4! part 3. part 1 / part 2
this part wasn't planned either.. However, I got an inquiry about this earlier and it was on my mind all day..."Was it meant to be funny or cute that Hikaru isn’t excited about having a third child or that Ai is stubborn and inconsiderate about it?" Ah, it really concerned me if the comic came off as something like that, so I felt obliged to draw out a little more in-depth about what's been going on in their heads in this story.
It's actually the opposite. Ai is very comfortable around him, teasing him, and being playful about things since she knows he doesn't dislike the idea, it's just that he's afraid and worried. There is no way I draw Ai as thoughtless and inconsiderate! ;v;/// I take her as the exact opposite of those two adjectives!! In fact, I think she had a tendency to overthink on some occasions. What she did here - it's because she understood him and knew he'd be okay and happy about the outcome as well.
Even aside from this state of mind that he may have, personally, I feel Hikaru wouldn't immediately agree and go, "Okay, let's have more kids :)" even if Ai says she wants to have more. It wouldn't be out of reluctance; I think he'd be concerned about her safety because Ai is small!! and childbirth is something that puts a lot of pressure on someone's body. I mean, they even had a god die from it in the jp myths; He's someone who can't afford to lose her and strain her any further. But he'd listen to her wishes if that's what she wants in the end. And why wouldn't he want more cute children like Ai and him. I don't think he'd be the one to ask first though so it has to be Ai who takes the initiative and that's how this comic came to be!
this comic wouldn't have happened without the feedback, it's given this idea more depth! Hopefully, it's convincing enough? :)
More to come~

I realize this is a huge ask sorry, but as someone who hasn't read Oshi No Ko. why is this ending considered to be so terrible?
If you'd rather not get into it though that's okay!
It's a little hard to explain without like... recapping the entire back half of the series, because so much of it is the story's own bad habits catching up to it and tripping it up, but it also feels like it comes really out of nowhere?? So it's hard to properly convey the wtfery of it from a fan's perspective without filling someone's brain with cursed knowledge.
@greatwyrmgold (me stealing your posts two asks back to back is a coincidence i prommy) did a good, pretty condensed tl;dr though:
The best spoiler-free explanation I can give is that, after a long mixed bag of an arc, it reached a somewhat satisfying conclusion to its central mystery, then changed its mind and the characterization of the murderer and gave Aqua a new reason to conclude the arc in a different way, completely unrelated to the Ai vengeance which drove him up to and through the first conclusion. And then the aftermath of that second vengeance is rushed and unsatisfying.
An unfortunate consequence of this rushed ending is also that, even though it's very clear that it's intended to be bittersweet in a "there was tragedy but we're choosing to live on and find ways to be happy" way, it's extremely possible to read at least one of the characters' resolutions in an extremely grim and miserable way.

Hi I wrote a fanfic to try and sorta "fix" the ending without necessarily changing what happens. What do you think?

I read this a bit before publishing this ask, but this really was nice and cathartic lol. God damn was this shit ass <3

I find it so insulting how aka concluded kana arc, not only did she not get any spotlight for her graduation as a conclusion for her arc, not only does she just get left by the waste side as she never knew aqua loved her, her last line in the entire series is her screaming having a mental breakdown because now the last person she loved has gone away, like it feels like aka had a personal vendetta to make kana as miserable as possible this entire series, like what was the point of her basically going through hell, and she doesnt even get an actress award in the end
It's funny to see people assuming Akasaka dislikes Kana now because the fandom party line was always that she was his pet character because she (checks notes) had involvement in the story and they didn't like her lol
Speaking as someone whose greatest joy comes from putting their favourite characters through the salad spinner (me and my friends Literally get together once a year or so to write our blorbos going thru mutual killing games together), I actually think Akasaka feels quite fond of Kana and though it's not a GOOD moment for her, emotionally speaking, it's a big dramatic moment focusing on the depths of her feelings and letting her finally confess her love for Aqua explicitly in such a huge bombastic way. From an author's perspective, I think this was supposed be some tragedy catharsis for Kana - @greatwyrmgold has a really excellent post that (among other things) compares & contrasts the portrayal of Kana's grief VS Ruby's. And like... idk, to me, one of these characters feels very much like a character the author knows well and is energized to write while the other feels more like an obligation. Can you guess who is which?

I think the difference in how Nino and Hikaru react to Ai confessing the truth (via the blog post and dvd) is deeply interesting.
While Nino doubles down on her deification of Ai and erase every trace of Ai's heart-felt confession. Hikaru accepts them and even states that Ai was a normal girl. (chp160 throws a wrench into things and now that I think about, we don't know how Hikaru feels about the dvd at all, but we are going to pretend like onk ended at 157 for the sake of my sanity.)
They are both clearly obsess with Ai, yet the difference is that Nino does not accept Ai's vulnerability while Hikaru does accept them, revels in them even.
I think a ninoai relationship would crash and burn way way faster, it would be a consistently miserable affair for everyone involved. (Which is why they should fuck) While hikaai would be more varied, the highs are higher and the lows are lower.

There's a version of the "don't go grocery shopping while hungry" rule specifically for writers where you should never under any circumstances be allowed to touch your draft within 3 hours of reading a really good story. Because sometimes when you read something great your head goes "fuck this is so much better than my stuff I should make that more like THIS instead!" Look at me. That's the devil talking and you should close the document NOW.
