In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, World 6-6 revolves around taking a ride on a boat in a dark underground lake. The boat is equipped with a light that can be rotated by tilting the Wii Remote, which allows the player to see the obstacles and enemies ahead.

Evidently, the developers thought highly of this boat, as the internal name for the boat object is "NICE_BOAT". It is the only instance of any object in the code being referred to as "nice".

Have you read the Kanakane novel?

Technically yes! I haven't looked at the JP text yet just because. well i don't like hajime tanaka's writing so i didn't want to buy the novel LMAO but fandom translator BennoSubs has been working on a TL of it and I've read what's available of that so far. It doesn't cover the whole novel, though, so I................... did, shamefully, read the remainder of it in the MTL that has been posted on AO3. u can hit me with rocks if you like.

I have really mixed feelings on it overall and ultimately, I like it a lot less than Spica. I'm in a sort of similar place with it where there are individual ideas and beats that I enjoy but the execution and overall themes just really don't work for me. Some of this is obvs my blorbo bias because I am going to find more to enjoy in something about Ai but I do genuinely think Spica had more going for it and I think the things Etude does with Akane, especially, really just feel like insult to injury at this point.

To start on a lighter note, I will say that the basic idea of showing us that there was a definitive explosive moment where Akane and Kana developed the hostility they have for each other in the main series is absolutely not a bad one and I think the general shape of the conflict they end up having is really interesting. The final big argument between them where Akane tries to do her Detective Super Analysis on Kana and Kana lashes out in return is at least on paper a really interesting idea and creates a really juicy sense of this being a proper, two-sided conflict. You can see the roots of what Kana comes to call Akane's "arrogance" and the way Akane writes narratives about other people in her brain and gets upset when they don't survive contact with reality - and why Kana would be so enraged and offended by it. But at the same time, you can see why Akane would be so hurt by what she meant as an attempt to empathize with Kana getting thrown in her face with more hostility and why she misunderstands Kana in this instance. Kana even directly says that Akane is someone who's grown up in a loving and supportive home while Kana can't even rely on there being a hot meal on the table when she gets home. Of course Akane would struggle to make sense of that - for as far as we know, this is possibly even her first encounter with the very idea that a parent could be abusive full stop.

HOWEVER......... You can probably tell from all my qualifiers that even if the ideas here are good, the execution is not lol. Tanaka's writing still has all the same issues it does in Spica and, if anything, the stuff like his misogynistic portrayals of women and his fixation on making young girls talk about sexuality and sex between adults and minors is even worse in Etude because we're essentially three for three on it now across these three separate stories. And, frankly speaking, it is just straight up worse here - I talked about this briefly on Discord a couple weeks ago, so I'll just grab what I said there to avoid repeating myself LOL

I think a big part of why [introducing akane's cop dad and retconning in that he taught akane profiling as opposed to it being something akane pursued and taught herself with her own intelligence] drives me so crazy is that it ALSO comes alongside the assertion that the whole "talking to aqua in her head" wasn't just a narration device or Akane coping in her immediate grief but just a permanent part of her mental landscape now. So Akane quite literally does not even have an internal world that doesn't revolve around Aqua. Her entire life is essentially restructured to revolve around men. Especially when you take into account that her dad basically didn't exist pre FnE. so instead of having Akane talk to her mom, a character she has an established relationship of reciprocal care and love with - and one that would've made for way more synergy with Kana's r/s with her mom, narratively speaking - Tanaka makes up a brand new male character and attributes Akane's most defining traits and strengths to him

If/when BennoSubs finishes their TL or if we get an official one like with Spica, I'll probably write on it a bit more extensively so I can be sure I'm judging the work properly. But right now, my feelings on it are that it's an interesting story on paper and has some interesting characterization tidbits but Tanaka's sauceless writing and the Misogyny Stench coming off everything in the novel makes it difficult to really enjoy it.

i have this unrealistic fantasy in my head where if you calmly and logically explain something to someone perfectly they will understand your position and gain knowledge from the exchange. unfortunately in the real world this does not happen often
